timespan that saw the DMA • place art and our diverse communities at the center around which all activities radiate. • pursue excellence in collecting and programming, present works of art across cultures and time, and be a driving force in contemporary art. • strengthen our position as a prominent, innovative institution, expanding the meaning and possibilities of learning and creativity. Our transitional strategic plan officially debuted in fiscal year 2017, and we continued to work on it this year; it remains the guiding light for all we do. Armed with this new plan, and building on our strengths—an encyclopedic collection with a dynamic contemporary art program, renowned educational programs and practices, an institutional commitment to free general admission, and strong support from volunteers—the DMA is well positioned to address long-term operating challenges and chart next steps for an exciting and sustainable future.

Art The first of these, Art, is at the core of our mission and all of our programs and activities. In fiscal year 2018, we celebrated numerous important acquisitions, all of which augmented the breadth and depth of our encyclopedic collection. Yayoi

Making its world-renowned art collection accessible for online visitors is another critical component of the scholarly research the DMA is furthering. In August 2017, we announced the unveiling of a new way to access our online collection at DMA.org. The development of the enhanced site is part of the Museum’s ongoing digitization initiative to expand access to its encyclopedic collection. The expanded online collection portal features an updated design that enables access to a larger quantity and variety of information, now providing a multitude of entry points and pathways to the DMA's robust online resource. and developing groundbreaking exhibitions. She brings a track record of thoughtful exhibitions and programs that are not only high profile and highly popular but also recognized for their contributions to scholarship. Her efforts to bridge the gap between historical and contemporary design will contribute to the Museum’s goal of diversifying its decorative arts and design holdings. A particular focus is the expansion of the Museum’s contemporary holdings, which have seen recent growth from gifts such as the Rose-Asenbaum Collection of over 700 exceptional pieces of modern and contemporary studio jewelry in 2015.
online content is supported by a grant from the O’Donnell Foundation, bestowed on the DMA in November 2013, to offer the entire collection online. Part of this initiative included photographing the entire permanent collection, a task completed this past spring. By digitizing the DMA’s collection, the Museum created one of the world’s most sophisticated online art collections, leading the field in the quality and depth of content available to all. The DMA also stimulates scholarly research through filling curatorial positions with the very best candidates. In February 2018, we announced the appointment of accomplished curator
Engagement The second prong of the Strategic Plan is Engagement with our diverse communities. In January 2018, Claire Moore, a noted museum educator from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was appointed The Allen and Kelli Questrom Center for Creative Connections Education Director to lead the DMA’s Education Department. Moore is responsible for strengthening the Museum’s role as an international leader in education programming, anchored by our dynamic 5,000-square-foot

Sustainability All of this work resulted in the highest attendance the Museum has seen in over 10 years. Total attendance for fiscal year 2018 was 829,293, 11.7% above the projected 742,608, and 3.3% above fiscal year 2017’s attendance of 802,870. Our long-standing partnership with the South Dallas Cultural Center allowed us to explore new programming and initiatives involving our paid Teen Advisory Group and the paid South Dallas Cultural Center Community Programs Internship. These initiatives began in the previous fiscal year but were refined and gained momentum this year. In the past, touch tours were conducted in the outside Sculpture Garden. In addition, the Meaningful

• At the end of the year, there were 16,431 DMA active member households, up 12% from the end of last year. • Running revenue for the year was $4,240,859, up 11% from last year’s $3,879,085. • There were 2,674,371 total web visitors, 11% above the 2,411,160 through the previous year; there were a total of 4,734,948 page views, 12% above the 4,230,561 through the previous year. • Facebook generated over 43,300,000 impressions and 173,000 engagements through 1,304 posts, up 77% from the previous year. • There were 103,396 Instagram engagements, a 12.5% annual increase. In order to maintain sustainability, we have had to make improvements in staff infrastructures and financial support. One important leadership change was the promotion in February 2018 of Tamara Wootton Forsyth to Deputy Director (the position has since been endowed as the Marcus-Rose Family Deputy Director). In her more than 17-year tenure at the DMA, Wootton Forsyth has played a crucial role in the realization of many of the DMA’s most exciting and innovative achievements. As the DMA commences a new strategic plan, Wootton Forsyth has worked with us and with the DMA’s senior staff to strengthen the Museum’s position both as an international leader in scholarly research, interpretation, and stewardship of its renowned collection and as a pioneer in public engagement. She has plunged into the task of building a culture of innovation, collaboration, and experimentation at the DMA. Wootton Forsyth oversees the departments

that support the intellectual and creative content generated by DMA staff, as well as the facility and infrastructures that sustain it. In April 2018, we announced both the appointment of KC Hurst as the Museum’s Director of Marketing and Communications and the creation of a new Design and Interpretation Department, which will oversee all creative content generated by the Museum. We simultaneously announced the promotion of the DMA’s Director of Exhibition and Museum Design, Jessica Harden, to Director of Design and Content Strategy, to spearhead the new department. The new positions and department will support compelling and consistent communications for the Museum as a way to build awareness, enthusiasm, and support for the DMA’s mission and programming. A versatile and hands-on marketing professional, KC Hurst brings to her new appointment more than a decade of creative expertise in digital marketing and a proven track record of innovation and analytics acumen. Hurst is responsible for audience growth through targeted marketing, local partnerships, public relations, and social media use, and is undertaking the alignment of cross-functional priorities that showcase the new strategic mission and inspire advocacy and participation for the entire institution. Jessica Harden, a seasoned exhibition designer with 17 years of experience in art museums and galleries, works closely with Hurst and the Marketing and Communications Department. Overseeing all of the DMA’s creative content, she and her staff aim to ensure a cohesive vision and representation of the DMA brand that is compelling to a wide range of visitors.
A transformative example of the financial support the DMA has enjoyed in years past and through most of this fiscal year can be found in the philanthropy of Eugene and Margaret McDermott. Their lives demonstrate how two people can truly change an entire institution, community, and city. On May 3, 2018, we mourned the passing, at 106 years of age, of Mrs. McDermott, a “philanthropic giant” who bestowed uncounted millions of dollars on institutions linked to arts, education, and science, including the Dallas Museum of Art. (A special section on Eugene and Margaret McDermott follows on pages 12–13.) Visionaries like the McDermotts made past and present successes possible, and it is people like you, our many visitors and supporters, who allow us to build on the McDermotts’ legacy by investing in the future.

Margaret was profoundly influenced by childhood visits to the Dallas Museum of Art. After attending the University of Texas to study journalism, she was Society Editor for the Dallas Morning News, a publicist for the DMA, and a journalist who worked in Europe and Asia before returning to Texas and beginning her life with Eugene. Born in Brooklyn, Eugene came to Texas to work in the oil industry and eventually became a co-founder of Texas Instruments. Although Eugene’s initial philanthropic interests were in education, medicine, and science, his wife helped deepen his appreciation for art. Margaret and Eugene worked tirelessly to make Dallas a global leader in the arts and to inspire others to do the same. One of the cornerstones of the McDermotts’ exceptional generosity was their interest in strengthening the DMA’s collection. They gave more than 2,000 works of art to the Museum, including masterpieces of 19th- and 20th-century European and American art, foundational objects for the collections of African and Indonesian art, and significant contributions to ancient American art. In addition, they established a foundation, now known as The Eugene and Margaret McDermott Art Fund, Inc., that
In addition to giving artwork, the McDermotts endowed funds to support acquisitions, a paid internship program for young museum professionals (one of the first in the country), curatorial and other professional staff positions, and the DMA directorship. Over her lifetime, Margaret served as Museum president and chairman of the board, and led the education and acquisitions committees. The McDermotts also assembled a collection of art second to none. Built between 1963 and 1993, the Eugene and Margaret McDermott Collection was one of the last major privately owned collections of Impressionism and modernism in the United States. Margaret carefully selected 35 paintings, pastels, drawings, and sculptures, including masterworks by Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Edvard Munch, and gifted these masterpieces to the DMA through the McDermott Art Fund. With this final gift of key works from their astounding collection, the McDermotts have truly achieved their vision of transforming Dallas into a world-class destination for the study and appreciation of Impressionist and modern art.

Edward Steichen: In Exaltation of Flowers September 2, 2017–May 13, 2018 The presentation of Edward Steichen: In Exaltation of Flowers represents a two-phase project conducted by the Conservation and Curatorial departments of the Dallas Museum of Art. The loan of the series and the funding for the project were made possible by the generosity of an anonymous donor. Conservation of the seven-canvas series was conducted at the Dallas Museum of Art during the summer of 2017 and addressed the structural and cosmetic needs necessary for the works’ display in the current exhibition.
