We were pleased to announce that the Museum received a major grant from the federal National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in their Access to Artistic Excellence category. This grant—the fourth prestigious award made to the DMA by the NEA since 2007—will be used to fund the Access to Archival Exhibition Resources Online (AAERO) project, which will provide the public with online access to DMA exhibition documentation from one website location. Progress continues on the related Exhibition Catalogs Online (ECO) project, another NEA grant–funded initiative to digitize DMA-published exhibition catalogues and checklists from 1903 to 1983. Access to the materials will begin this summer, when approximately three hundred publications and related exhibition documentation will be available through the Portal to Texas History created by the University of North Texas.

remarkable contributions also provided funding to build the Museum’s Nancy and Jake L. Hamon Building, a 140,000-square-foot wing for the DMA’s collection and special exhibition programming. Mrs. Hamon also made numerous gifts of art to the Museum, both from her personal collection and her foundation, including Our Daily Bread, René Magritte’s 1942 oil on canvas given in honor of her friend and fellow Museum patron Margaret McDermott. Her support touched all aspects of the Museum and helped the DMA grow into the institution of international prominence that it is today. Merrill Rueppel, former director of the Museum from 1964 to 1973, was another longtime friend of the Museum who passed away this past year. He is credited with developing the Museum’s encyclopedic collection, which transformed the DMA from a primarily regional art center into a museum of national consequence. 5

In the spring, we announced that Bonnie Pitman retired from her position as the Museum’s Eugene McDermott Director. Her tenure at the Museum was distinguished by her development of innovative collection-based programming and her dedication to curatorial excellence and community engagement. We were incredibly fortunate to have had Bonnie in a leadership role at the Museum for more than a decade. Under her oversight, the Museum enhanced and expanded its encyclopedic collection, which serves as the foundation of its public programs, with the addition of more than 3,500 objects since 2000. These acquisitions included outstanding works of ancient American art, South Asian art, Indonesian tribal arts, and American 19th- and 20thcentury silver, as well as paintings by French masters Paul Signac, Edouard Vuillard, and Gustave Caillebotte, and works by contemporary artists David Altmejd, Olafur Eliasson, and Jim Hodges. She was an inspiring and visionary leader and has been a tremendous force for innovation and growth at the Museum. Her contributions have even extended beyond the Dallas Museum of Art to the museum field at large. Upon her retirement, Bonnie was awarded the American Association of Museums Award for Distinguished Service to Museums, which recognizes sustained excellence and unusual service by an individual with at least twenty years of experience in the field. Olivier Meslay, Senior Curator of European and American Art and The Barbara Thomas Lemmon Curator of European Art, served as the Interim Director as the Museum undertook an international search. He ably led the Museum administration, ensuring that the DMA remained as lively and vibrant as ever, especially as we prepared for the much anticipated exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk—the Museum’s first foray into fashion. Just prior to the opening of the exhibition in November 2011, the Museum announced that Dr. Maxwell L. Anderson was appointed as the new Eugene McDermott Director. It is a pleasure to welcome Max, who comes to us from the Indianapolis Museum of Art and brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and passion to his new post. He is a leader in the museum field who will expand the role that the DMA plays locally, nationally, and internationally in meaningful ways. Unlimited opportunity exists for the DMA.
