entire Board, I would like to particularly recognize my esteemed predecessor, John Eagle, and our well-respected Chair, Margot Perot. Their commitment to and passion for our Museum have been exemplary and essential to maintaining the exciting momentum we all see at the DMA.
Summarizing the transformative and often game-changing accomplishments of this past year in a few hundred words is an impossible task.
The Museum will continue to operate within the core values we articulate in our Strategic Plan: We will conduct our business in an open and transparent fashion, we will be responsible stewards, and we will serve the public, all through a culture of caring, learning, informed risk taking, and innovation. We had great success this past year in expanding our relevancy to local and global communities, and in leading the museum field with research, scholarship, and innovation. also unveiling our Paintings Conservation Studio and Conservation Gallery. We continue to attract internationally recognized new staff, giving us the resources to build on our successes, while, due to a generous grant from Edith O’Donnell, we execute a most ambitious project to digitize our entire collection for online access. Against this backdrop, we have more to look forward to and to celebrate. We are gearing up for major traveling exhibitions such as Bouquets: French Still-Life Painting from Chardin to Matisse (co-organized with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts) and Michaël Borremans: As sweet as it gets (co-organized with BOZAR in Brussels), as well as dynamic programming like the Wittgenstein Vitrine international symposium. In the spotlight in June The DMA topped headlines in June, hosting museum directors, international thought leaders, and the mayors of America’s cities. For the first time in a decade, the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) held its annual meeting in Dallas. From May 31 to June 3, the event was attended by 170 museum directors from the leading art institutions in the US, Canada, and Mexico. On June 17, the North American debut of the New Cities Summit, which I co-chaired, welcomed eight hundred invited attendees from more than forty countries for two days of discussions about the future of the urban world. Seventy journalists from across the globe attended, publishing more than three hundred stories, and representing $4.46 million worth of media coverage. The New Cities Summit in Dallas witnessed the launch of the Global Cultural Districts Network (GCDN), based in the Dallas Arts District. A partnership among the New Cities Foundation, the Dallas Arts

2013, the Museum positioned itself as a leader in the field of in-house conservation. The project not only
resulted in completion of a state-of-the-art conservation facility but also includes a public conservation gallery space, a public outdoor sculpture terrace, and a renovated meeting/dining room for events. Making these spaces available to the public is an important aspect of the DMA’s efforts to build a visible physical presence for conservation throughout the institution. To date, forty-four conservation treatments have been carried out on paintings from the permanent collection and on several promised gifts and recent donations from private collectors in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Major treatments have included cleaning and restoration of key works from the Museum’s 19th-century French collection, such as Camille Pissarro’s Apple Harvest. Chief Conservator Mark Leonard was successful in obtaining a grant from the Morris Louis Conservation Fund to support the much-needed structural treatment of two works from the permanent collection of contemporary art. Leonard has also developed and continues to nurture relationships with local collectors, sparking renewed interest in building strong ties with Board members through common interests in conservation. As an added prong of its conservation initiative, the DMA is establishing a network of regional conservation partnerships with the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, the University of Texas at Dallas, and the University of North Texas in Denton. Examples of the types of research possibilities enabled by these partnerships range from the development of atomic sampling techniques for silverplated objects with UNT to the study of ultramarine pigment discoloration and the pigment and medium analysis of a work by Paul Gauguin from the DMA’s collection with UT Dallas. Innovative partnerships As part of our partnership with our neighbor Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, DMA educators co-teach Learning Lab, a class for seniors in the visual arts cluster. Besides spending time with, discussing, and responding to works of art in the DMA’s collection and 7
special exhibitions, this year the students had the opportunity to meet artists Jim Hodges and Stephen Lapthisophon. The DMA also continued its partnership with the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and Dallas-area teens through the Dallas Learning Lab. The teen-based Learning Lab project, a youth-centered exploration of artistic and scientific fields through both analog and digital tools, was initiated through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the MacArthur Foundation. The grant jump-started activities such as the Teen Advisory Council, in which teens can work with and learn from mentors and peers.
Groundbreaking scholarship in exhibitions and publications The DMA’s seminal catalogue on its worldrenowned collection of art from Island Southeast Asia, Eyes of the Ancestors, won the prestigious International Tribal Art Book Prize in 2013 for a publication in English. The award was presented to Senior Curator of the Arts of Africa, the Americas, and the Pacific Roslyn Walker and Publications Manager Eric Zeidler in Paris in December 2013. Contributing authors Steven Alpert and Reimar Schefold were also in attendance. Mind’s Eye: Masterworks on Paper from David to Cézanne paired works on paper with unusual frames drawn from the DMA’s permanent collection; this educated the public about different categories of frames and stimulated viewers to make artistic connections between subject and frame. The accompanying catalogue published new scholarship and provided detailed technical information including provenance, inscriptions, bibliographies, and exhibition histories. Ambitious programming included lectures and appearances by local works-on-paper conservator Tish Brewer, scholar Scott Schaefer, collector Elizabeth M. Eveillard, and collector and independent scholar William B. Jordan.

Friends program In January 2014, the Dallas Museum of Art announced that it had enrolled nearly fifty thousand visitors in its DMA Friends membership program since its launch on January 21, 2013. The nation’s first free museum membership program is available to anyone who wishes to join, and focuses on activating engagement with the Museum and building long-term relationships with visitors. The DMA’s emphasis on creating meaningful arts experiences in an open and welcoming environment has expanded its audience base, with 95.4% of Friends self-identifying as new members at the Museum.

free general admission. The remaining $5 million will complete the digitization of the Museum’s permanent collection, including the creation of rich educational content to support free online experiences with art. It is a vote of confidence in the Museum’s efforts to make free experiences with art broadly available to the public, both on-site and online. By providing open access to so much new content about our collection, this donation is making an important statement about the value of open cultural data for the future of our field. Growth of DMA Partners ensures increased revenue The DMA Friends’ sister membership track, the DMA Partners program, has also successfully expanded in its first year, with more than fifteen thousand households

• Increase in average gift of Premier Partners (annual donors of $1,000–$25,000): 45% Conservation grants Construction and equipping of the new Paintings Conservation Studio was catalyzed by an anonymous lead gift. Additional support for the conservation program was provided by the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation, the Graham Williford Foundation for American Art, a private donation from Suzanne Deal Booth and David G. Booth of Austin, Texas, and an anonymous gift. In December 2013, the DMA was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Challenge Grant to be used for the creation of an endowment for the Chief Conservator position. Chief Conservator Mark Leonard was successful in raising the funds needed to meet the first required benchmark of Challenge Grant funding, and the first installment was disbursed by the NEH in June 2014.

integrating the work of conservation into the daily fabric of the Museum. Conservation loans are a significant part of our plans to expand the DMA’s in-house conservation program. In many instances, these types of partnerships result in the opportunity to exhibit the works on public view for a period of time after completion of the conservation treatment, and in some fortunate cases add the work to the Museum’s collection. Finally, in September 2014, the DMA received funding from Bank of America to restore the DMA’s Wittgenstein Vitrine through the bank’s 2014 global Art Conservation Project. The grant fully funds the restoration of the piece, which will be the centerpiece of the upcoming exhibition Modern Opulence in Vienna: The Wittgenstein Vitrine. Additional fundraising The Museum continues to benefit from a series of ongoing fundraisers: TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art raised $1,962,711 in FY 2014. Art Ball raised $1,466,710 in FY 2014. Silver Supper raised $220,950 in FY 2014. An Affair of the Art raised $53,652 in FY 2014. We could not do without the volunteer leaders who spearhead these events and all of the thousands of contributors and participants who make them so successful and such a key source of operating support every year.
None of these past milestones would be possible without all of the Museum’s friends, partners, trustees, staff, volunteers, and donors, who, along with the City of Dallas, keep the DMA going strong, taking informed risks, and surpassing expectations. I would like to thank our numerous and committed supporters for all that they have made possible. Rather than resting on our laurels, we are busily preparing for the next year, which promises to be every bit as eventful as the one chronicled in this report.
