FOREWORD
Early in 1939, representatives of the three art museums then in active operation in the State, joined to assemble an annual exhibition of current Texas art. Each believed that by collective effort a group of art works could be formed representative of the highest attainments of Texas artists. This year it was decided to limit entries to the fields of painting and sculpture, and by doing so allow a greater scope of the creative aspects of those particular mediums in Texas. Consequently the name of the exhibition has been changed to the Texas Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture. It is to be noted that each year the works of new painters and new sculptors make their appearance, but only in a secondary sense is this annual exhibition an effort toward finding new talent. The primary object always has been to gather and to show the most representative works by the most representative Texas artists. To achieve this objective, generous aid has been given by individuals, business firms and educational organizations by gifts of cash awards and purchase prizes. The public, too, has aided, as is shown by the increasing number of sales from the exhibitions. It is hoped that this and succeeding exhibitions will deserve even greater amounts of this concrete evidence of appreciation. The three sponsoring museums wish to thank the artists for their efforts in making this a fine show, and also to thank the jury of selection and award which has chosen by careful thought the works for this, the Eleventh Annual Texas Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture.
