The Richard R. Brettell Lecture Series presents

Monet’s “Seine at Lavacourt”: What Is a Modernist Artist to Do in France in 1880? Friday, February 19, 9:00 p.m. Included in general admission to the Museum; no reservations required

Claude Monet’s iconic painting The Seine at Lavacourt was completed in 1880 and shown at the Salon, the regressive, state-sponsored exhibition that had prompted the impressionists to found their own independent exhibitions beginning in 1874. Dr. Paul Hayes Tucker, The Paul Hayes Tucker Distinguished Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts Boston, will consider this stunning painting and whether it was, in fact, Monet’s “turncoat” picture and a retreat to more traditional painting strategies.

Artist Talk and Demonstration: France Scully Osterman Thursday, April 8, 7:30 p.m. $15, discounts available for DMA members, students, and seniors

Late Night Lecture: Monet in Étretat: Tourism, Fishing, and Geology Friday, April 16, 9:00 p.m. Included in general admission to the Museum; no reservations required

The towering cliffs and pebbled beach at Étretat have long served as striking subjects for artists. Join Dr. Richard Brettell, The Margaret McDermott Distinguished Chair of Art and Aesthetics at UT Dallas and renowned expert on impressionist art, to explore Claude Monet’s paintings of this striking coastline—one of his favorite subjects.

Thursday Night Lecture: Photography and “the New Painting” in 19th-Century France Thursday, April 22, 7:00 p.m. $15, discounts available for DMA members, students, and seniors See The Lens of Impressionism for an additional $10—a $6 savings.

Dr. Sarah Kennel, Associate Curator in the Department of Photographs at the National Gallery of Art and a specialist in early French landscape photography, will investigate how the advent of the new artistic medium of photography dramatically transformed the development of impressionist painting during the second half of the 19th century.

Join artist and nationally recognized expert in early photographic process, France Scully Osterman, for an investigation of the techniques and technology employed by 19th-century photographers featured in The Lens of Impressionism, along with a live demonstration.

Don’t miss the chance to hear the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Historian. Opening Day Exhibition Tour

Immerse yourself in the techniques and imagery of early French photography featured in The Lens of Impressionism. Join Dallas photographer and educator Frank Lopez for this full-day workshop where you will view and discuss photographs in the exhibition and participate in hands-on experiences with a large-format camera and the wet plate collodion process. Equipment, materials, and The Lens of Impressionism admission tickets are included in the workshop price.

Delights of Normandy Presented in partnership with rise n°1 restaurant

Enjoy a unique culinary experience that will explore the artistic and gastronomic traditions of Normandy. Led by Chef Richard Bertschi, the class will include demonstrations and a sampling menu of French cuisine, including rise n°1’s renowned soufflés.

Conversations and Cocktails: Thursday Evenings with the Impressionists

Late Night programs are included in general admission to the Museum. The Lens of Impressionism requires an additional ticket. Stroll through our European galleries enjoying live music and stay late as local DJs spin eclectic French recordings.

Selected Thursdays, February 25, March 25, April 29, and May 20 6:30–8:30 p.m. Start your night with a tour of the Museum’s special exhibitions and European collections, followed by cocktails and music under the stars.

6:30–7:15 p.m. Tour: The French Connection From Manet to Monet and Courbet to Cézanne, join DMA staff to explore impressionist masterworks and other romantic views from 19th-century France. Exhibition tickets are required for the tour.

7:00–8:30 p.m. Performances and Cocktails in the Courtyard After the tour, enjoy French music played by local musicians and DJs in the newly renovated Fleischner Courtyard. Cash bar; in the event of rain, outdoor performances will be moved to the galleries.

Audio Tour and SMARTPHONE Tour Admission to the exhibition includes an audio tour (as available) exploring the paintings and photographs in the exhibition as well as impressionist works in the Wendy and Emery Reves Collection. Bring your smartphone to the Museum and access even more, including biographies of the artists and images of their works in the DMA’s collections.

From early classics by Jean Renoir to the Nouvelle Vague and contemporary hits like Amélie, French filmmakers have a long tradition of creating beautiful and innovative movies. The Lens of Impressionism: Photography and Painting Along the Normandy Coast, 1850–1874 is organized and circulated by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.
