FOREWORD The Texas General Exh ibition now in its ninth year has survived a great world war without a break in its continu ity . This year it has emerged with what to date is its largest amount of cash prizes and the greatest number of individual entries to be exam ined by its jury. A brief review, then, of its foundation and purpose would seem to be appropriate . Early in 1939 representatives of the three art museums of the State, then in active operation, decided to join hands to assemble an annual exhibition of current Texas art. Each shared the conviction that by collective effort a group of art wo rks could be formed representative of the highest attainments of Texas artists . Moreover, it was recognized t ha t no group of similar qual ity cou ld be assembled by each museum individually except through duplication of effort and expense . From the beginning it was planned that the exhibition in its entirety would be shown in each of the collaborating museums, but in this sense only was it to be a circulating exhibition. It was felt that a circu it beyond the participating museums would create technical and administrative problems difficult to handle under existing conditions, and that to increase the length of time of the exhibition schedule would discourage the artist from entering h is most significant or most recent works. No arbitrary limit was, or is, imposed upon the size of the exh ib ition, but quality was never to give way to quantity.

Each year the works of new pa inters and new sculptors make their appearance, a welcome sign" of growth and development, but only in a secondary sense is the Texas General Exhibition an effort towa rd finding and encouraging new talent. The primary object always has been to gather and to show the most representative works by the most representative Texas artists. To achieve this objective, generous aid has been given by individuals, business firms and educational organizations by gifts of cash awa rds and purchase prizes. The public too has a ided as is shown by the increasing number of sales from the exhibitions. It is hoped that this and succeeding exh ib itions will deserve even g reate r amounts of th is concrete ev idence of appreciation . This year 564 works by 366 artists were entered in the competition and of these, 111 works by 101 artists were selected by the jury for exhibition. These works in many mediums represent nearly all of the various types of expression which give the art of today so complex a pattern. The so-called " p rim itiv e ," the varying phases of realism, t he enigmas of surreal ism , the design st ructure of the abstraction , the geometric harmony of non-objective art, all are seen in this exhibition wh ich stands for freedom of thought and statement. It reaffirms in the language of art the meaning of the o ld wo rds, " I do not agree with a word you say, but w ill defe nd to the death your right to say it." James Chillman, Jr.
