JIMPARSONS Some people might think that Texas-born actor Jim Parsons got his show biz start playing intellectually gifted but socially inept physicist Dr. Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, the hit CBS sitcom that premiered in September, 2007. But Parsons has been acting since the age of 6, when he made his stage debut as the Kola-Kola Bird in an elementary school production of The Elephant’s Child. But his Big Bang Theory character has certainly been his break-through role, so much so that some folks might have trouble differentiating between the Sheldon the character and Jim the actor. They do have one thing in common: Both are Texans born and reared in and around Houston. But that’s about it. “People always want to know if I’m as smart as Sheldon. It’s sweet that they feel compelled to ask. But sadly, no,” Parsons once told The Toronto Star. Parsons was born March 23, 1973, in Houston, and grew up in Spring, a suburb on the north side of Houston, where he went to Klein Oak High School. Parsons has said that his experience in a production Noises Off in high school was the first time he “fully connected with the role I was playing and started to truly understand what it meant to be honest on stage.” Since first bringing Sheldon Cooper to life, Parsons has starred in both stage and TV productions of The Normal Heart, Larry Kramer’s play about the early days of the AIDS epidemic in New York City. He was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for the stage version, and for an Emmy for the TV version. Parsons’ role as Sheldon has garnered both popular and critical acclaim. He has won four Emmys, a Golden Globe, A Television Critics Association Award and a Critics Choice Television Award. Today, Parsons lives in Los Angeles with his partner of more than 12 years, art director Todd Spiewak. In October 2013, the couple received the Inspiration Award from the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN). In talking about that award, Parsons told E Online in October, 2013, “I’ve never considered my relationship with Todd to be an act of activism. Rather simply, it’s an act of love, coffee in the morning, going to work, washing the clothes, taking the dogs [out] — a regular life, boring love.” He continued, “If we are indeed an inspiration to others by simply being who we are and living our lives in the way that feels right to us then we have to thank the same people who help any other couple who continue a successful relationship — our friends and family. We are both surrounded by so many people who make our lives better and easier, friends we’ve had for many years and friends we’ve made since living in L.A.”

the honorable mayor of dallas
Greetings! As mayor of the city of Dallas, it is my honor to congratulate 2015 OUT North Texas on its publication. The OUT North Texas family has been a reliable and useful resource to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community (GLBT) and adds momentum to the entire city of Dallas. I strongly believe that our city is stronger today because of its rich cultural diversity and OUT North Texas is a momento of that diversity. Entrepreneurs, small business and Fortune 500 firms are all discovering the tremendous value in having a diverse workforce and community. Dallas would not be the city it is today without the many benefits that comes from having a homogenous population. That is why companies are moving to our city and why firms choose to stay.
MICHAEL S.RAWLINGS
The 2015 OUT North Texas magazine is a showcase of that diversity. The many retailers, companies, professionals and service providers listed inside play an important role in our region’s economy. When readers patronize those advertisers they provide an economic boost. I would encourage readers to support these businesses and explore what these companies have to offer in our city. OUT North Texas has also been a reliable and useful resource for our out-of-town visitors for more than 60 years, providing all the latest information for the best entertainment, shopping and dining experiences while in our town. The Voice Publishing Company’s long commitment to our community is commendable and I wish OUT North texas a successful edition! As we celebrate the new edition, I ask that we all bear in mind that while we have overcome difficult obstacles, cultural tolerance is still something that we all must continue to practice and teach future generations. Again, thank you to the OUT North Texas for consistently making a positive impact on our community. Best regards,
Michael S. Rawlings Mayor

dallas’ OUT life
The Oak Lawn/Cedar Springs/Uptown area is the heart of Dallas’ LGBT community. Here you’ll find bars and dance clubs with an appeal to just about every taste; restaurants that serve up cuisine flavored by a blend of southern, Mexican and international influences; and countless galleries, shops and outdoor patios perfect for seeing or being seen. Dallas is easy to get to (served by two major airports) and easy to get around thanks to its buses, taxis, trolleys and light rail system. The Oak Lawn gayborhood is defined by four major streets: Inwood Road on the northwest, Lemmon Avenue on the northeast, Oak Lawn Avenue on the southeast and Maple Avenue on the southwest. The commercial establishments along all of these streets are very gayaware and gay-friendly, and of course any business within this block of streets can pretty much be assumed to be “all gay, all the time.”

OUT in the gayborhods A lot of big cities boast a gayborhood — the urban center where queer populations congregate to eat, drink, shop and play. From San Francisco’s Castro District to New York’s Chelsea to Miami’s South Beach to Houston’s Montrose, most American cities claim at least one neighborhood as the place where gay culture dominates. Dallas boasts two — one a long-established center, one a burgeoning new base.

THE STRIP ON CEDAR SPRINGS / OAK LAWN
Casie Nova [Kat Haygood]
28 |
“The Crossroads” is the natural nickname for the intersection of Cedar Springs Road and Throckmorton Street, but whether you refer to it by that, as “Oak Lawn,” “Cedar Springs,” “The Strip,” “The ‘Hood,” “Boystown” or any number of similarly fond sobriquets, everyone in Dallas knows this as the hub of gay culture. While it was once a dodgy neighborhood sandwiched between Downtown and Park Cities, the LGBT community began gentrifying the area starting in the 1970s, creating what has become a powerhouse of culture and commerce — a true gay mecca. Its proximity to Highland Park, University Park and Uptown has made it a prime location; Oak Lawn Avenue is one of the more desirable addresses in central Dallas, home to trendy markets such as EatZi’s, fancy restaurants like Al Biernat’s and comfortable hangouts like Lucky’s. The mixeduse development ilume opened in 2009 and quickly became
a social lightning rod, with residential space, Dish restaurant and the ilume Gallerie, and the sister development, ilume Park, a dog-friendly residence. Oak Lawn runs perpendicular to three other busy drags: Lemmon Avenue, Cedar Springs Road and Maple Avenue, all of which claim their share of nightclubs and gay-owned and -managed businesses. Caven Enterprises owns four clubs along the Strip (JR.’s Bar & Grill, Sue Ellen’s, TMC: The Mining Company and Station 4), and Kroger’s grocery store is as much a pick-up joint and meeting place as a market. The Crossroads is the point from which all things queer emanate in Dallas, from the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade winding its route through the streets in September to the biggest Halloween street party in the city to the Easter pet parade and picnic each spring in nearby Lee Park. But all year long, it’s where gay Dallas calls home.
BISHOP ARTS DISTRICT / OAK CLIFF For years, the Oak Cliff area southwest of Downtown Dallas was known more as an area of perceived crime and poverty than as a unique and interesting neighborhood. But as typically happens when gays gentrify an area, Oak Cliff has seen a resurgence in appeal (and an increase in rents) over the last decade. Yet it is still one of the most affordable areas of the city. The growth is largely concentrated in the Bishop Arts District, an up-and-coming neighborhood undergoing a renaissance. Bordered around Davis and Bishop avenues, this small enclave is gradually branching out from a few blocks to the larger community. But Bishop Arts remains the focus.
Bishop Arts District
Chief among the draws for this historically funky, artsy center are the restaurants and boutiques, many gay-owned. From Hattie’s to Veracruz restaurant, there’s also the acclaimed Lucia restaurant, the Oak Cliff branch of the gay-popular hamburger joint Hunky’s and Tillman’s Roadhouse, designed by famed gay style guru Todd Fiscus. The list is nearly endless, as new shops create more and more reasons for the gay community of Dallas to head south of the Trinity and call this place home.

The Dallas Mavericks
are Dallas’ professional basketball team. Part of the National Basketball Association, the team is part of the Southwest division of the Western Conference and is owned by Mark Cuban. They were the 2011 NBA Champions and since their inaugural season in 1980-81, the team has also won three division titles (1987, 2007, 2010), and two conference championships (2006, 2011). Established in 1981 by Don Carter and Norm Sonju, the Mavericks boasted a healthy start for a new team, winning the Midwest Division title in 1986 and making it to the Western Conference finals in 1988. By the ’90s, the team suffered a major slump, never progressing to the playoffs. A highlight came when Jason Kidd was signed to the team, named Rookie of the Year and an All-Star in 1994. Kidd would return to the team in 2008. With new owner Cuban, coach Don Nelson, and the presence of Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash and Michael Finley, the team began to make strides in

the new millennium, returning to the playoffs and conference finals. Under the leadership of Avery Johnson, the team made it to the NBA Finals in 2006, but lost to the Miami Heat. In 2011, under coach Rick Carlisle, the Mavericks took the Western Conference Finals and ultimately the NBA Finals, winning against the team that defeated them five years prior. Home games are played at American Airlines Center, 2500 Victory Ave. The regular season runs November through April. For more information and tickets, visit DallasMavericks.com.
The Dallas Cowboys
are the professional football team of Dallas, part of the National Football League. They play in the eastern division of the National Football Conference in the NFL. named the highest valued sports franchise by Forbes Magazine in 2009. The Cowboys played in the Cotton Bowl until 1971, when they moved to Texas Stadium in Irving, which the team called home for 37 years. The team now plays in the new AT&T Stadium in Arlington, which hosted the Super Bowl in February 2011. The Dallas Cowboys won the Super Bowl in 1971, 1977, 1992, 1993 and 1995. their second consecutive World Series appearance, falling to the St. Louis Cardinals four games to three. In 2012, the team lost the American League Wild Card playoff game to the Baltimore Orioles, then missed the playoffs in 2013 and 2014. After mild successes in its early years, the team seemed to hit its stride in the late ’80s and mid-’90s with manager Bobby Valentine leading the team to a second-place finish for the 1986 American League title. Pitcher Nolan Ryan was signed to the team in 1989, and the team thrived to another second-place finish. The 2009 season proved the team’s resilience, despite previous inconsistent seasons. With the addition of Josh Hamilton, Neftali Feliz and Derek Holland, the team hit another second-place finish in the A.L. West. In recent seasons, the team faltered and just missed the Western Conference Final with a defeat by the Los Angeles Galaxy. The team improved with the addition of Jason Kreis in 2002, but soon struggled with its 2003 season in which it missed the playoffs. In 2005, Lamar Hunt rebranded the team as FC Dallas and moved them to Pizza Hut Park in Frisco. It wasn’t until 2010, however, that the team fared better with a strong season with David Ferreira named as the league’s MVP. The team made it to the Western Conference
finals defeating the Galaxy and advanced to the MLS Cup finals, which it lost to the Colorado Rapids. Home games are played at FC Dallas Stadium, 9200 World Cup Way, Ste. 202, Frisco. The regular season runs March through October. For more information and tickets, visit FCDallas.com.

NorthPark Center [Dallas CVB]
Cowboy boots, 10-gallon hats and men — and women — on horses: That may be many people’s first impression when they hear the word “Texas.” But spend just a little time here and you’ll see Texans are as serious about their shopping as they are about their boots. (Actually, most Texans are more serious about shopping than they are about boots!) As the birthplace of upscale department store shopping (Neiman Marcus) and America’s first planned, open-air shopping center (Highland Park Village),

Downtown Fort Worth [Cassie Quinn]
RELOCATION GUIDE | 57
Dallas is not just a sprawling city; the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is one of the largest metropolitan areas in America. But many Dallasites still call the heart of the city home, in one of these unique neighborhoods.
DOWNTOWN
neighborhood biographies
The North Texas Metroplex is generally divided into several major areas: Dallas, Fort Worth, the Mid Cities and outer communities. Dallas itself is often subdivided: Downtown (referring to the Central Business District), Uptown, North Dallas, Far North Dallas, South Dallas, Oak Cliff, Oak Lawn, Lake Highlands, Pleasant Grove and East Dallas (sometimes called Lakewood or the White Rock area). Each region itself is further known for discreet neighborhoods with their own personalities. Finding the one that’s right for you is an idiosyncratic process: Do you prefer to be close to the action Downtown or do you not mind a commute in exchange for a big yard? Do you like to walk from stores to restaurants, or instead park at a mall and get everything at once? Is your idea of heaven a high-rise’s spectacular view of the city or a quiet stream across a greenbelt? Whatever your preference is, there’s a neighborhood for you!
Many urban downtowns across America saw a falloff in afterwork commerce in the late 20th century, and Dallas was no exception. But it has also invested substantial energy into revitalizing the Central Business District with resident-friendly developments. The Deep Ellum area, formerly a warehouse district, now provides many converted loft spaces, such as Adam Hats and Live Oak Lofts. In central Downtown, projects like the Mosaic, the Davis Building, the DP&L building and the Old Mercantile have proven popular with gay residents. Plans are being offered to build on the Farmers Market, and restaurants like CBD Provisions continue to attract diners.
Oak Lawn
A transitional neighborhood two decades ago, the Oak Lawn-Cedar Springs area is now the hub of Dallas gay life. See Welcome to the Gayborhoods, page 28.
Park Cities
Years ago, University Park and Highland Park — collectively known as Park Cities — declined an invitation to be part of the city of Dallas, instead setting up their own autonomous communities within the city limits. The results have been one of the best-established (and priciest) neighborhoods in the nation, with multi-million-dollar homes, some complete with servants’ quarters and four-car garages. Home to many of North Texas’ wealthiest individuals, it is sometimes called “the Bubble” due to its selfcontained shopping, dining, schools and activities — and is right on the edge of Oak Lawn.
Uptown/Victory Park
The dividing line between Downtown and Uptown may only be the Woodall Rodgers

canyon, but the distance is vast. Uptown has long been a popular living locale, filled with high-rises and townhomes for an authentic urban but upscale living adventure. The addition of the W Hotel (which includes permanent residences) and the overall development of Victory Park have only expanded on its already strong appeal with LGBT city dwellers who like doormen and verticality in their lives.
M Streets/Lower Greenville
Although developed at roughly the same time as Park Cities, and separated only by North Central Expressway, the M Streets — so named because many thoroughfares here begin with the letter M (Mockingbird, Monticello, McCommas, McMillan, etc.) — offers many of the attributes of Park Cities without the prices, though that is changing as well. The area has boomed in recent years, as many of the homes built in the 1920s and ’30s have been torn down to make way for McMansions (a conservation district has slowed that trend). The houses tend to be wellbuilt cottage-style homes on somewhat small lots, but exude a homey elegance. The M Streets cross Lower Greenville Avenue, a popular entertainment district with shops, clubs and restaurants within easy walking distance.
White Rock Lake/Lakewood
What is it about a lake that draws people to nest? Lakewood in East Dallas is a well-established area with a variety of homes at all prices and interests. The remarkably diverse region includes expensive lakefront mansions, charming developments like Hollywood Heights, gorgeous old homes along Swiss Avenue and quaint pocket neighborhoods throughout. It is considered a desirable but reachable
McKinney Avenue Trolley
community, perfect for starter homes or long-standing couples who value space and quiet but proximity to Downtown.
Fair Park (South Dallas)
With the arrival of the DART Green Line, this area is due for revival. Some restaurants have opened near Fair Park and loft conversions have begun to attract true urban pioneers.
The Cedars
Just south of Downtown, the Cedars is a burgeoning area of affordable homes in a transitional neighborhood. Best identified by the impressive South Side on Lamar lofts, it has blossomed with the new Dallas police headquarters, which has lowered crime and led to dining options and clubs.
Bishop Arts
Old warehouses and a trolley terminal have been converted
into stores, restaurants and a few offices. Construction of a new trolley from Union Station to Bishop Arts began in 2013. Homes around Bishop Arts have begun getting a face lift. See Welcome to the Gayborhoods, page 32.
Kessler Park/Stevens Park
Even when Oak Cliff as a whole was considered a transitional address, the Kessler Park/Stevens Park area was an exception, with lovely older homes, a charming public golf course and loyal residents who take care of their gorgeous, hilly neighborhood. A popular place for everyone from mayors and judges to celebrities that call it home.
“Lory Land”
This unofficial neighborhood in North Dallas is so named due to the efforts of Dallas-based Lory Masters, a now-retired openly lesbian Realtor who has sold many homes in the area. Roughly
bounded by Inwood Road, LBJ Freeway, I-35 and Northwest Highway, it serves as a bubble of LGBT-friendly housing in an area otherwise known as socially conservative.
Winnetka Heights
Once upon a time, the Sears & Roebuck catalog delivered anything — even houses, down to the very last nail. Homes in this previously neglected section of town epitomize what true miracles can still be found when a neighborhood seemingly “goes gay” overnight. Located in the very epicenter of newly fashionable Oak Cliff, cultural diversity and vibrancy are only two of the key elements one finds in this older charming neighborhood. One of the oldest conservation districts in the city, Victorian, Prairie and Craftsmanstyle houses have either been newly renovated or are waiting for updates.

| neighborhood biographies As a rule, the farther you get from Downtown, the more likely you are to find bigger lots for less money per square foot. That often means, however, that you also find a more conservative residence base and fewer centers of gay life. Nevertheless, many of Dallas’ bedroom communities have genuine appeal for gay men, lesbians and their families, from better public schools to proximity to work — and often even equally gay-accepting neighbors.
Richardson/Garland
These towns just north and east of Dallas are the definition of bedroom communities — small, quaint and pleasant, but most of the activities around the Metroplex are located outside their city limits.
Addison/Farmers Branch/ Carrollton
These small independent cities lie just north of LBJ Freeway roughly between the Dallas North Tollway and I-35, and tend to be conservative, though convenient to the DFW Airport and the Galleria shopping center. Addison in particular has embraced aspects of the LGBT community: its gay-run WaterTower Theatre frequently produces queerthemed plays and musicals.
West Village
Plano
One of the fastest-growing cities in the nation, Plano is often considered one of the more conservative suburbs of Dallas. But the hub of Collin County isn’t quite a bastion of homophobia, with gay-friendly organizations like Gay and Lesbian Alliance of North Texas and Stonewall Democrats, as well as professional-quality performing arts at the Collin County Community College and nearby Richardson’s Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts.
Frisco
As more and more people filter into the Metroplex, this once-distant suburb has grown in popularity — and with the opening of the only IKEA in North Texas, become a frequent day trip destination for gay Dallasites.

Tarrant County Courthouse
Mid-Cities: Arlington, Grand Prairie, Irving, Hurst, Euless, Bedford
The Mid-Cities is a general term used to describe those independently-incorporated areas within Dallas and Tarrant counties that lie between the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth. Each has its own identity and appeal.
Arlington
In Tarrant County, the home of Six Flags Over Texas, the Rangers’ Ballpark in Arlington and the AT&T Stadium.
Grand Prairie
In Dallas County, the closest of the Mid Cities to Downtown Dallas boasts the Verizon Theatre, which hosts many top musical acts.
Irving
In Dallas County, right on the border of DFW Airport. Home of the Las Colinas development and business park and two theater companies: Lyric Stage and ICT MainStage.
Hurst-Euless-Bedford
In Tarrant County, this triumvirate of cities are frequently referred to as H-E-B. A growing area with many businesses and new family homes. They also border Haltom City.
Southern Sector: DeSoto, Cedar Hill, Lancaster, Duncanville, Waxahachie
White Rock Lake
Fort Worth
Fort Worth is the 16th largest city in the United States and has been called one of America’s most livable communities. Today, it is a thriving center of culture and commerce with plenty to offer: the Historic Stockyards, remarkable museums, a dazzling downtown area, the Texas Motor
Speedway, spectacular annual events and more. The LGBT community in Fort Worth is active and growing, with the older neighborhoods of Meadowbrook and Handley in the southeastern portion of the city home to a large number of gay residents attracted to historic homes and friendly neighbors.
If you’ve gone to Waxahachie, you’ve gone too far! Actually, that city is on the outer edge of the Metroplex. These smaller towns south of Dallas have grown in popularity with North Texans, though more slowly than northern suburbs like Plano, Addison and Frisco.

A gay-straight alliance and LGBT programs aim to enhance the college experience for anyone identifying as non-heterosexual.
