Join us for the release of the fifth edition of the Economic Issues for Women in Texas report on Thursday, November 21, 9:30-11am, at the T. Boone Pickens Institute for Health Sciences at Texas Woman’s University in Dallas.
This year’s research highlights the pivotal role women play in the Texas economy - the strongest in the nation. It also illuminates the critical need to address the challenges that threaten women’s economic stability and security: access to health care and health insurance; affordable child care and stable housing.
Most importantly, the report includes policy recommendations aimed at employers, community leaders and lawmakers to help drive the social and economic changes necessary to allow Texas women and girls to thrive.

Join us for a thought-provoking conversation between AwardWinning Journalist Ann Curry and KERA’s Krys Boyd, host and managing editor of the nationally syndicated Think! on the individual and collective roles we play as catalysts for societal change.
The first of its kind, Texas Women’s Foundation’s Annual Luncheon brings together community and corporate volunteers, leaders and philanthropists in support of Texas women and girls.
Each year, we convene around the issues and challenges that threaten women’s economic security and recommit to our shared vision for a society in which women and girls can fully participate.
This year, we’ll share highlights from our 2024 research report (see left) and ways you can get involved in driving meaningful change.

Keynote Speaker: Ann Curry Emmy Award-Winning Journalist; National and International Correspondent, NBC
(2012-2015); Executive Producer and Reporter, PBS’ ‘We’ll Meet Again’; Host, TNT/TBS ‘Chasing the Cure’
From the President & CEO
I will always remember the Summer of 2024. It was a whirlwind… In all the best possible ways!
Upon joining Texas Women’s Foundation in late April - and attending our annual Leadership Forum & Awards Celebration on my second day on the job! – I got straight to work on behalf of the 14.6M women and girls who call Texas home.
• With the support from the TXWF Board of Directors and Executive in Residence Hattie Hill, I began plugging into the Dallas community, meeting leaders and key stakeholders who share our commitment for #StrongWomenBetterWorld.
• And with guidance from former Dallas/TXWF CEO’s Pat Sabin, Becky Sykes and Roslyn Dawson Thompson, I began meeting
our Board Alumnae and loyal supporters, whose legacy of leadership I am honored to carry on as we work toward our vision of an equitable society in which women and girls can fully participate.
To all of you who answered my calls and emails, attended coffees, lunches and dinners with me (and Ros and Becky!), and gave generously of your time, talent and treasure over these last several months, thank you. I’ve had the best “launch” a CEO could ask for!
“IT WILL TAKE ALL OF US TO DRIVE CHANGE”
As we chart the course for the future of Texas Women’s Foundation, it will take all of us to drive change. Next month, we’ll release the fifth edition of our Economic Issues for Women in Texas research report, which:
• Highlights the pivotal role women play in our strong Texas economy,
driving both growth and innovation; and
• Identifies - and quantifies - the impact of failing to address the barriers to women’s economic security and success: access to health care and health insurance, affordable child care and stable housing.
Save the date for Thursday, November 21 and join us at Texas Woman’s University for our exclusive research roll-out. See pg. 5 for event details and a preview of the key takeaways from the report.
And please join us for our 39th Annual Luncheon on Friday, November 1 at the Dallas Omni Hotel. Award-winning journalist Ann Curry and KERA’s Krys Boyd, producer of the nationally syndicated program, Think! will engage in a thought-provoking conversation about the roles we play individually and collectively as “Catalysts for Change.” I hope to see you there!
Thank you to the great team who helps to make this all happen, and for all you do to build #StrongWomenBetterWorld.
The Small and Mighty Texas Women’s Foundation Team
KAREN HUGHES WHITE
From the Board Chair
As I begin my second term as Texas Women’s Foundation’s Board Chair, I am grateful to our supporters and grantees for your ongoing faith in the organization and commitment to our mission.
To be certain, Texas Women’s Foundation has endured significant challenges over the past few years. From navigating the long-term impact of COVID-19 on our business model to a lengthy leadership transition, the Foundation encountered setbacks that could only be overcome with your ongoing commitment and stalwart
support. It’s with humility and gratitude that I thank you on behalf of the entire Board of Directors. YOU make the mission possible!
Welcoming our new President and CEO Karen Hughes White last spring was an exciting development in the Foundation’s 39-year history. As we plan to celebrate our 40th anniversary beginning in the Fall of 2025, the Board and staff are focused on “Retrieving, Rebuilding and Reimagining.”
• Retrieving our most loyal supporters and key stakeholders;
• Rebuilding the practices, programs and initiatives that have differentiated the Foundation and made us strong; and
• Reimagining the future of Texas Women’s Foundation at a time when Texas women and girls have never needed us more!
Welcome New TXWF Board Members
Texas Women’s Foundation is proud to welcome new and old friends of the Foundation to lead the mission impacting women and girls across the state.
Amidst all of the change and disruption of these last few years, one thing has remained constant… Our focus on the mission. We are proud to have granted $4.9M in 2024-25 and to have delivered $6M in total mission impact to 243 deserving organizations!
“YOU make the mission possible!”
Since our inception in 1985, Texas Women’s Foundation has invested nearly $85M to create an equitable society in which women and girls can fully participate and we couldn’t have done it without you!
Thank You for your continued support and for the many ways you contribute to building #StrongWomenBetterWorld.
Introducing Texas Women’s Foundation’s New President & CEO
It was an exciting moment to introduce Karen Hughes White as our new President & CEO in front of more than 600 of our supporters at the 2024 Leadership Forum & Awards Dinner. Karen(right) joined Board Members Hattie Hill (left) and Carrie Freeman Parsons (middle) on the stage for a conversation highlighting Karen’s work for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Susan G. Komen, and her most recent role as CEO of Tri Delta Women’s Fraternity. She spoke about her passion to drive transformative social change over the years, and her excitement to further advance and broaden Texas Women’s Foundation’s steadfast dedication to our mission, initiatives and influence.

The luncheon theme is “Catalysts for Change,” recognizing the role the Foundation’s community of donors, grantees, advocates and volunteers play in its ability to achieve its mission of building #StrongWomenBetterWorld through research, advocacy, grantmaking and programs.
We invite you to join us for this transformational experience!
Award-winning journalist Ann Curry, a former NBC Network news anchor and international correspondent, has reported on conflicts in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Darfur, Congo, the Central African Republic, Serbia, Lebanon, and Israel; on nuclear tensions from North Korea; and Iran and on numerous humanitarian disasters, including the tsunamis in Southeast Asia and Japan, and the massive 2010 earthquake in Haiti, where her appeal via Twitter (@AnnCurry) is credited for helping to speed the arrival of humanitarian planes.
Effie Dennison
She has contributed groundbreaking journalism on climate change, interviewing scientists and native peoples, documenting glacial melt in the Arctic, the Antarctic (where she spent time inside an expedition hut left by Shackleton) and on Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as documenting the deepening drought in the American West. Ann is also known for her focused reporting from inside Iran, giving voice to its women, human rights activists and young people, including Green Revolution activists. She also first broke the news of Iran’s interest in negotiating a nuclear agreement with the outside world.
Krys Boyd is host and managing editor of Think from KERA in Dallas – a position she’s held since 2006. To date, the national program can be heard on more than 200 stations across the country.
A graduate of Texas Christian University’s Bob Schieffer College of Communication, Krys began her career as a journalist along the U.S./Mexico border and returned to North Texas in 1999 to serve as News Director for Broadcast.com, and later Senior Producer of Broadcast News at Yahoo. Krys joined KERA in 2001, hosting the nightly radio talk show Conversations. Later, she wrote and produced documentary and educational television programs, including the critically-acclaimed, nationally broadcast JFK: Breaking the News in 2003, and served as producer and co-host of the Emmy Award-winning public affairs program On The Record. She also hosted a weekly television version of Think from 2007-2011.
Despite the pivotal role they play in driving growth and innovation in Texas, women - and particularly women of color - face significant and persistent barriers to economic security and success, namely: access to health care and health insurance, affordable child care and stable housing.
How is it that Texas boasts the strongest economy in the nation and its women, projected to number 18.5M by 2040, continue to struggle - despite high rates of education attainment and billions of dollars contributed by women-owned businesses?
In order for the Texas economy to remain strong, we must address the barriers to women’s ability to survive and thrive by enacting policies that support women in the workplace, eliminate the wage gap once and for all, and improve representation of women in leadership roles. By creating an equitable society in which women can fully participate, we will build a stronger, more resilient and more inclusive economy for all Texans.

The majority of Texas women are women of color, and over half identify as single. Between 2012 and 2022, the percentage of White women living in Texas declined from 45% to 40%, while percentages increased for Hispanic (38 to 39%) and Asian women (less than 5% to 5%). The percentage for Black women remained steady at 12%. 50%+
The number of women in management roles grew from 37% to 40% from 2012-22. However, women only claim 28% of the top executive roles.
A DAY OF EMPOWERMENT FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS
On April 30th, Texas Women’s Foundation held its Leadership Forum & Awards Celebration with workshops, forums and celebrations for women and girls across the state. The day kicked off with the #BESTSELF program that hosted more than 200 students ages 13-16 from schools and organizations across North Texas. The young ladies descended the Omni Dallas Hotel to enjoy meeting new friends, dancing to fun tunes spun by DJ Girlbot, winning great prizes and taking part in workshops focused on being Empowered.

TEXAS WOMEN’S FOUNDATION INVESTS $6 MILLION TO ADVANCE WOMEN AND GIRLS
Guided by research that identifies the barriers to women’s economic security and success, Texas Women’s Foundation distributed $4.9M in grants to 167 women- and girl-serving organizations in 2024-25. Together with our donors and philanthropic partners –our Giving Circles, Donor Advised Fund holders, and the Young Women’s Initiative, our total mission impact topped $6M for the year. We are so grateful to those who make our mission possible. By supporting the research, advocacy, grantmaking and programs of Texas Women’s Foundation, you are investing in our vision for an equitable society in which women and girls can fully participate. And you are part of the movement to build #StrongWomenBetterWorld.

Grants Awarded by Program
BUT THERE IS STILL MORE TO DO
Texas Women’s Foundation is proud to celebrate a total of $4.9 million granted, made in collaboration with philanthropic partners to deserving organizations. This total includes $869,000 awarded through our Annual Community Grant Cycle. While we celebrate the positive impact of our contributions, we recognize that the need remains significant. The demand for services and programs across North Texas counties continues to grow, widening our funding gap. We need your support to close the funding gap.

INVESTING IN WOMEN’S ECONOMIC SECURITY
HOUSING – TRANSITIONAL HOUSING
The Lullaby House
Located in Dallas, The Lullaby House provides community care and residential support to pregnant and parenting teens in the foster care system. In 2021, the Texas Department of Family and Protective services reported that 380 Texas youth in foster care were pregnant. Five facilities in the state provide residential services for the teens and their babies (total 24 beds in the state). An already complicated and traumatic situation is exacerbated for an already vulnerable teen.
A $40,000 general operating grant from the Texas Women’s Foundation’s community grant cycle supports the work of the Lullaby House.
HEALTH
Mercy Clinic of Fort Worth
Serving the 76104 ZIP code in Fort Worth, the ZIP code with the lowest life expectancy for women in the state (UTSW 2019), a $40,000 Texas Women’s Foundation community grant supports hiring a Community Health Worker for La Clínica de Mujeres (Women’s Clinic).
The Community Health Worker, hired from the community they serve, is uniquely equipped to break down barriers of access to care, and to maximize health outcomes for women.
“It is just very, very important for us to educate our patients. Just as much as they need us, we need them to understand what is going on with their health, because they are the ones taking care of themselves. So it is important for us to have Community Health Workers here with us to make sure there is no gap in the communication between the provider and our patients.”
LEADERSHIP & EDUCATION
Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains
Serving two of the lowest performing schools in Fort Worth ISD, a Texas Women’s Foundation grant expands the Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains’(GS-TOP) piloted Math Tutoring Program to benefit 3rd and 5th grade girls at two Title I elementary schools. GS-TOP aims to introduce girls of every age to STEM. Girls want them to know how they can explore and improve the world. To be competitive in the global market over the next decade, the U.S. will need more STEM professionals than the country is currently on track to produce. GS-TOP’s goal is to reframe challenges into possibilities.
