Automotive legends and heroes

uiet, reserved and a gentleman

Race driver Jim Clark took his craft to new levels with his meticulous and serious nature. Born on the family farm near Kilmany, Scotland, Clark was the youngest child and the only boy among five children. Even at an early age, he showed amazing mastery behind the wheel of a racing car

achievement came in 1965 when he became the first non-American to win the Indianapolis 500 since 1916. Then came the spring of 1968. Taking the checkered flag at the South African Grand Prix in January, Clark, with his 25th victory, surpassed the great Juan Manuel Fangio for all-time wins.

His first competitive win came in 1957, at age 21, in a friend’s Porsche. His first big-time opportunity came when Lotus manufacturer Colin Chapman spotted him at a race in England and asked that he come aboard to test cars. The role was just the start. Two years later, while regularly winning or placing in races, he received an offer to drive Formula One for AstonMartin. When the deal fell through, Clark was back with Chapman. The pair dominated F1 for the next eight years.

It was the latest in a string of three consecutive Grand Prix triumphs. It would also be his last. On April 7, due to a mix-up, Clark was scheduled to compete in two non-GP, no-points races at the same time. Although he wanted to race at an event in England, he honored a commitment to be at an event in Germany. On a wet track, in a car he didn’t like and in a race he didn’t want to be in, Clark crashed at 150 mph.

He was instantly killed. A legend had been stopped cold. “When you watched him, you knew that a master was at work,” said driver Stirling Moss at the time. “He will be missed by his friends, for his company; by his competitors, for the targets he set them; and by the spectators, for his artistry.”

Together, they won 25 of 72 championship races (Clark also competed in lesser-class non-point events) and took 33 poles. His crowning

acing has always been chock-full of "good ol' boys." But what about the "good ol' girls?" What about the wild woman from Barnesville, Ga., who used to show her passion for driving fast by outrunning the police in her hometown? There are pioneers who break new ground, and then there's Louise Smith, a woman who took dynamite to conventional thinking. "I was just born to be wild," Smith told the Baltimore Sun daily newspaper more than a decade ago. "I tried to be a nurse, a pilot and a beautician and couldn't make it in any of them. But from the moment I hit the race track, it was exactly what I wanted." It was the early 1940s. Racing promoter Bill France Sr., the eventual founder of the National

Illustrated By GREG PERRY

Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), was looking for a woman driver who might attract more women to his local track in South Carolina. Someone knew someone else who also knew Smith, a woman who had become legendary for outrunning the law. Even though she had never seen a race – much less driven in one – Smith finished third in a modified 1939 Ford. Smith was bitten by the bug. A year later, she borrowed her husband's new maroon Ford and said she was going on vacation. Instead, she drove to Daytona Beach, Fla., entered a race and wrecked the car. On the bus ride back home, she created a story she would tell about the car breaking down on her trip. "Where's the car, Louise?" her husband, Noah, asked when she returned. "That ol' trap broke down in Augusta (Ga.)," she said. Noah then showed her the front of the Greenville, S.C., newspaper that carried a picture of her wreck in Daytona. From that point on, despite her husband's objections, Smith became a regular on France's new NASCAR circuit. In a decade of racing, Smith made a name for herself, by winning races – 38 events in all – and producing spectacular crashes with her aggressive style. On the circuit, driving against some of NASCAR's early legends, she was dubbed the "Good Ol' Gal" by the other drivers. But it was hardly easy being the first woman racing driver.

"Then men didn't like it to start with and they wouldn't give you an inch," she said. After retiring in 1956, she remained active with the racing community, helping at tracks and sponsoring cars. Smith would be remembered as "the first lady of racing," and was the first woman inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1999. She died at age 89, but not before leaving an indelible legacy. Perhaps the late Benny Parsons said it best. "If we could find a Louise Smith here in 2006 to get in there and finish fourth in the Daytona 500, imagine what that would do for NASCAR racing." Just imagine. Although Bill France Sr. may have had his mind on increasing the number of women watching racing in an effort to help grow NASCAR, Louise Smith's mind was on something else: winning.

elocity Yellow is an oxymoron. Yet, here it is, slathered all over a Corvette Grand Sport driving a whopping 24 km/h on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles. It's rip-your-hairout frustrating. The car is just not meant for a five-lane, 30-kilometre-long parking lot like this. Heck, it's not even really at home plodding along at highway speeds. Sure, it could do 280 km/h, it could corner like a rock on a string and stop with enough force to loosen your stuffed-up sinuses, but the simple question from your sensible significant other echoes in your head every time you're parked in gridlock or dodging potholes on some side street: "Why buy a car like that when you can't even drive it around here?"

By JEFF MELNYCHUK Corvette owners don't need to scramble for answer. You can see it the way they grip the steering wheel. Buying a Corvette Grand Sport simply on the hope you can stretch its legs once in while is justification enough for enthusiasts, who seem to live in an entirely different universe than people who believe a car is a mere transportation appliance. Mutter those very words to a Corvette owner and you're apt to be dining on knuckle sandwich for lunch. And then there's the wow factor. The base Corvette is nice, but the Grand Sport adds the visual sizzle of the hyper-expensive 'Vettes: the wider rear fenders from the racetrackinspired 505-horsepower Z06 model (six inches total increase in width); special wheels wrapped with wider rubber (more than 30 centimetres); and unique front-fender air extractors topped with Grand Sport badges. Of course the name should add more sizzle. A lot more sizzle, actually. The prestigious Grand Sport handle was attached to several racetrack-only versions of the 1963 Corvette coupe. The GS was a renegade, built without official approval of General Motors with

engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov putting the black-ops program together. So, while the modern Grand Sport could be considered a mere option package that adds bigger brakes, wheels and some bodywork to the base Corvette, it means much more: there's a bloodline to maintain and real heritage to uphold. To that end, the GS can be ordered with a "heritage package" that includes two fender hash stripes that no other Corvette model gets. But what about substance under those stripes? The Grand Sport model replaced the optional Z51 chassis package and includes goodies such as Z06-sized brakes and something called "active handling" that improves both ride and road holding. But the GS goes well beyond the Z51 since it visually looks much like the higher-priced race-track-inspired Z06, although mechanically the GS comes with a 430-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 whereas the Z06 comes with a 505-horsepower 7.0-litre V6. Presto, the anonymous Z51 becomes its very own full-fledged model called the Grand Sport. It's brilliant marketing, really. Taking a page from the Ford Mustang handbook, the Corvette is no longer just one car, but a

niche of several separate and distinct models, ranging from a base car all the way to the 638horsepower ZR-1. The GS easily - E-A-S-I-L-Y - paints 33centimetre-wide black stripes up and down the Sunset Strip and the optional two-mode "butterfly" exhaust unleashes a guttural bellow worth a bit more horsepower. Optional grouping includes excellent custom leather heated seats, highly detailed door panels, as well as a premium stereo, headup display (vital signs such as speed and navigation details are projected onto the windscreen) and a power convertible top for the test car stuck here in L.A. traffic.

The Grand Sport is stanced properly thanks to the use of the ZO6's wider body panels.

Who needs a dustpan?

A convertible is an especially cool set of wheels, but a dirty or discolored top can really mess up the image. Keep your lid clean with RaggTop convertible top cleaner and vinyl top protector from Wolfsteins Pro Series products. The company's Fabric Convertible Care Kit includes one bottle of cleaner plus one bottle of protectant that can be used on vinyl as well as fabric tops as well as plastic convertible rear windows. Both products work at fighting harmful manmade pollutants such as acid rain, smog, tar and grease, plus bird droppings, tree sap and other natural elements that can cause further damage your roof. The kit usually sells in the $30 range and is available through a number of online resellers. You can scope out the full list as well as other Wolfsteins' cleaning products at www.wolfsteins.com.

It's always a smart idea keep a few tools handy in case of an emergency, but should you really store them dangling from the end of a keychain? That's exactly where you'll find them when you own the BodyGard 7-in-one mini-feature tool from www.swisstools.com. This device comes with a seatbelt cutter, glass breaker, flashlight, high-decibel warning alert, emergency flasher, thermometer and tirepressure gauge. The product is actually small and light enough to dangle from your keychain (you just give it a sharp tug to release), so you'll always know were to find it if, or when, you need it. Check the website for product availability and where to buy.

Keeping your garage floor clean of debris seems like a constant battle that's hard to win. Why not make the job easier with the Eye-Vac automatic vacuum. The electric powered 13-inch-by-7.5inch canister with its 1,400-watt motor can be placed in any outof-the-way spot. All you do is sweep the dirt and debris over to the vacuum and a sensor on the unit automatically activates the suction motor. You can also leave the vacuum's setting on manual mode that requires you to lightly kick or tap the start switch. The bagless trash containment area includes a cleanable HEPA filter designed to keep dust to a minimum. And the built-in handles make the vacuum easy to move around. The Eye-Vac is priced at $100 and can be obtained from www.smarthome.com.

Same purpose as before,

just in a totally different car.

N

By MALCOLM GUNN

ostalgia ain't what it used to be – or so the saying goes – and that applies to Audi’s 2013 allroad wagon that returns following an eight-model-year absence. The allroad (Audi doesn't capitalize it) re-enters the marketplace with the same degree of go-anywhere, all-wheel-drive Quattro swagger as before, but with a 211-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine at its disposal. Previous allroads offered a base 250-horsepower turbo V6, or 300 horses worth of optional V8 to play with, along with less concern toward fuel consumption. Ah, but we're heading into 2013, where less is nearly always more, thanks to gigabytes of technological advancements. For example, Audi states that the allroad (replacing the 2012 A4 Avant wagon) will accelerate to 100 km/h from rest in 6.7 seconds, much quicker than the V6 version circa 2005. The new model is also

about 135 kilograms lighter and is rated at 10.4 l/100 km in the city and 7.4 on the highway, which is a darn sight better than the 14.8/9.4 rating the last V6 allroad was tagged with. Assisting in reducing consumption and maximizing overall performance is a standard eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift controls. The allroad of today is also a much more handsome piece or work – arguably one of the best proportioned wagons on the market – from any angle. The standard 18-inch wheels (19inchers are optional) fill the allroad's wheel arches almost to the brim. Ground clearance is 18 centimetres, which is 3.8 centimetres more than the outgoing A4 Avant. That’s certainly enough for more "allroad" conditions, but the car's real advantage is the permanently engaged all-wheel-drive that's famous for keeping Audis glued to the road no matter what. In normal driving conditions, 60 per cent of the available power is directed to the

The new allroad clobbers the old model in terms of fuel performance while being noticeably quicker to 100 km/h. Some of the credit goes to the standard eight-speed automatic transmission and the 135-kilogram weight loss. You do give up some cargo room, however.

rear wheels, but when conditions become nasty, up to 85 per cent can be deployed to the back wheels or up to 70 per cent to the fronts. As well, extra torque can be sent to the outside wheels to help the allroad better rotate in a turn (referred to as torque vectoring). Cargo capacity with either the rear seats in place or folded flat is somewhat less than allroads of old and is also less than what's offered by direct competitors. Appearing mighty fine, however, is a cabin that's as welcoming as it gets. The steering wheel is extra-thick and the gauges and controls are highly legible. Seating accommodations in the base Premium model are leather covered and the outside view is enhanced by a panoramic sunroof. The front seats are power-adjustable and automatic climate control is standard. Step up to the Premium Plus and you get heated front seats, tri-zone climate control and a power-operated tailgate, while the Prestige adds a navigation system, a 505-watt Bang and Olufsen-brand stereo and a system that alerts the driver when vehicles on either side of the allroad are approaching. Audi will give you plenty of opportunity to run up the allroad's $47,100 base price with a plethora of options, including a Sports Interior package. A Driver Assist group has adaptive cruise control (maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front) on its menu. No matter how you outfit your allroad, the wagon's inspiring looks, performance and fuel efficiency will never have you longing for the nostalgia of the good ol’ days.

What

you should

know:

2013 Audi allroad Type: Four-door, all-wheel-drive wagon Engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (211) Transmissions: Eight-speed automatic Market position: As many sport utility brands are converted to car-based models, interest in the classic wagon appears to be fading. The allroad is among the few makes that provide a measure of excitement in this category. Points: Exterior styling totally nails it; torque-rich four-cylinder engine should be plenty for most drivers; posts exemplary fuel economy numbers; eight-speed automatic should be bolstered by manual gearbox or automated-manual-transmission option; allroad yet another feather in Audi's cap. Safety: front airbags; front- /rear sideimpact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. L/100 km (city/hwy) 10.4/7.4; base price (incl. destination) $47,100

HISTORY

Mazda3: 2004-'09

The entry-level Mazda3 sedan and hatchback wagon supplanted the Protegé sedan and Protegé5 wagon for the 2004 model year. This was followed by a high-performance Mazdaspeed3 hatchback that arrived for 2007. Base models featured a 148horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, while a 156-horsepower 2.3-litre four-cylinder was optional. A five-speed manual transmission, or optional fourspeed automatic (later upgraded to a five-speed) was optional. The front-wheel-drive Mazdaspeed3 featured a 263-horsepower turbocharged 2.3 mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Following six successful years, an all-new second-generation Mazda3 and Mazdaspeed3 were introduced for the 2010 model year.

THE GOOD STUFF

The Mazda3 series was longer, wider and taller than the models it replaced, resulting in significant gains in passenger space. As well, the seats were more comfortable and the dashboard, control panel and trim were of higher quality. Base fourcylinder sedans were surprisingly agile and fuel efficient, especially when matched to the smoothshifting five-speed manual gearbox. The versatile hatchback's 2.3-litre four-cylinder added a bit more punch, while the Mazdaspeed3 proved to be an extraordinary pocket rocket that, when called upon, could also haul an impressive amount of gear. The first-generation Mazda3 was a good-looking, wellbuilt vehicle that still has plenty of charm today.

HEADS UP!

There was very little to complain about with the Mazda3. If you didn't want to row the gears yourself, models with the larger 2.3-litre engine connected to the automatic transmission were considered the best pick. All cars came with four-wheel disc brakes, but anti-lock was optional, so check your prospect for this important safety feature. Rear-seat legroom was tight with the front seats pushed back. The

Mazdaspeed3's extra-firm suspension sacrificed comfort for performance and the steering wheel tended to twist around (torque steer) in the driver's hands under hard acceleration, a common problem with high-powered front-wheel-drive vehicles.

PRICES AT A GLANCE

The Mazda3 has held its value and used pricing tends to favour the seller. The 2007-'09 Mazdaspeed3 prices average about $3,000-$4,000 above other well-equipped Mazda3 hatchback models.

OVERALL

The first Mazda3 wasn't as popular as the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, but it enjoyed a solid reputation as a fun-to-drive and comfortable vehicle that was easy on gas and experienced very few serious mechanical issues. Either sedan or wagon would make an excellent first-car choice and worthy contender for multi-car families.

Y

ou see, I really wanted the new 482-horsepower 331cubic-inch V8 to visually stand out as something different, and cruising Ebay for ideas eventually landed me on an page full of auctions for NASCAR- style carbonfibre airboxes. Whoa. Could one be made to work? Light weight, industrial looking, functional and racy . . . and dirt cheap. Used pieces often sell for less than $100. This one was just 74 bucks without the filter. But how did I know it would fit the 1965 Mustang project car, or the new 331? I actually didn’t, but as it goes with hot rodding, I was going to make it fit. There’s not really much you need to know when shopping for one of these babies, but most are painted white for whatever reason, so finding a naturallook carbon-fibre piece might be the only real challenge, unless you happen to like white. Also to make sure that the carburetor opening matches the

carburetor being used. When it finally arrived from a company that apparently specializes in selling used racing goods, I was in awe. You have to understand, however, that used racing parts can be rough looking to begin with —‑which can be part of the alure, actually — and they’re going to show signs of wear. Since airflow into the engine is the important thing when it comes to a racing airbox, it begins with a large 16- by four-inch-tall filter element as opposed to the usual 14- by three-inchtall filter element found in aftermarket round assemblies. Obviously with a larger filter surface there’s less air restriction, but the extra size means that this is hardly a universal fit. In fact, the assembly here measures a whopping 20x20.5 inches. For our little ’65 Mustang, the biggest obstacle was the engine bracing that was designed to clear the typical 14-inch aftermarket air cleaner, of course. Hood clearance, aggravated by a tall intake

Straight off a NASCAR competition vehicle, the carbon-fibre airbox almost looks like it was meant to be under the hood of the ’65 Mustang. Even without the rear connect to the cowl area of the car, it looks cool. Clearance for the rear bracing was an issue, but that’s what spacers and a belt sander are for, right?

manifold and one-inch carburetor spacer, was actually not a problem since, well, we had an aftermarket fibreglass hood with a mild bulge and scoop built it. Fully prepared to trim whatever I needed to trim off the back of the airbox to make it clear the underhood bracing, there ended up being enough hood clearance to go up and over the bracing. That left the most interesting problem of them all: this airbox was constructed to tilt forward and to the right, which means that the competition engine was tilted in the engine compartment. Gross and weird looking and in need of a fix. But how. Really, these kinds of projects are not for the impatient, I have to admit. I ordered two 0.75-inch plastic spacers — the second just in case I messed up the first one — with the intention of cutting them on an angle to square up the airbox with the carburetor. The added plus is that I could build in a little tilt, either forward or back or left or right, to fine-tune the fit in the engine bay. Spacers also come in

all sorts of heights to help the base clear things like the distributor. Through a lot of fitting and cutting using a bench-mounted belt sander, and then more fitting and sanding, the result was a nice little wedge-shaped spacer that propped up the front corner of the airbox and created just the right tilt to clear the engine bracing. I didn’t even have to use the second spacer. A few minutes with the hot-glue gun and the new spacer was secured to the base and it was all over with. Bear in mind that it’s unlikely that any two airboxes will be exactly the same as every race car is different. The tilt angle will likely be different depending on where the airbox connected to the cowl on the original race car. All this to say that you’ll need to be clever after your prize arrives in the mail. Still, for a little bit of work and about $150 — including, the airbox, a new filter, two spacers and shipping — the Mustang now wears something unique and functional and un-round.

"I was rather annoyed that after spending all this time and money on a new engine that it was going to be topped with the usual round air-filter assembly. How typical."

Just how did a German Baroness's car end up in North America to sell for US $11.77 million?

I

By TOM JENSEN

n this year's annual August pilgrimage to Pebble Beach, Calif., more than one-quarter of a billion dollars in vintage and collector cars crossed the auction block, representing a staggering sales increase of 32 per cent over 2011's total. But there was only one high sale in the latest frenzy of buying and selling absolutely fabulous automobiles among the truly well heeled. And this year's cream of the crop was not only an amazing automobile, but it came complete with a fascinating history, thanks to its former owner, the late Baroness Gisela Josephine von Krieger of Germany. The car in question was a stunning 1936 MercedesBenz 540K Special Roadster, which was sold by Gooding and Co. at Pebble Beach for US $11.77 million. The 540K Special Roadster, the top-of-the-line Mercedes in its day, was custom-ordered new by Henning von Krieger in 1936. But Gisela, just 23 when the car was delivered, soon commandeered it from her brother for her own use. The young baroness was among the social elite in Europe, attending the coronation of King George VI in England. The New York Times called her "elegant, coquettish, depressive, a dead ringer for Marlene Dietrich who fancied jewels and lived in the best hotels in Paris and Cannes." In 1936 she was nominated as "one of the 10 best-dressed women in the world." When the Second World War broke out, the Nazi government ordered all German aristocrats to move back home so they could be protected. Instead, von Krieger made it first to Monaco and then to Switzerland, apparently driving the Mercedes to get there. At some point between 1949 and the early 1950s, she moved to New York City, where she had the car shipped over on the Queen Elizabeth ocean liner. While she lived in Manhattan, she resided at the St. Regis and the Waldorf-Astoria hotels. But she kept the car at the Homestead Inn in Greenwich, Conn., where she frequently visited.

Beautifully restored and with a great history, the 540K sold for US $11.77 million at auction.

Brother Henning died of melanoma in Switzerland in 1959 and Gisela returned there to mourn his death – some say as early as 1959, other accounts place her return as late as 1962 – but she left the Mercedes in the United States. Von Krieger died of a heart attack alone in Switzerland in 1989, reportedly surrounded by more than $320,000 in jewels in her otherwise filthy apartment.

In 1992, Gooding and Co. owner David Gooding, who at the time worked for auction house Christie's, got a phone call from a Swiss attorney settling the Baroness' estate and told him about the car. Legend has it that the Mercedes was discovered in Connecticut with her silk driving gloves and road maps in the glove box and lipstick-stained cigarette butts in the ashtray.

Six years later – after protracted litigation about its rightful owner – the car was sold to a collector and restored faithfully by noted specialist Chris Charlton. The 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster truly was a marvel of engineering its day, with a 180-horsepower 330-cubic-inch V8 that cruise the Autobahn at 115 mph (185 km/h), which as a fantastic speed in 1936. How rare was the baroness's 540K Special Roadster? Only 26 were built from 1936-'38 and it is believed that fewer than 10 survive today. Gestapo founder Herman Goering had one, and in 2011, a 1937 540k Special Roadster owned by Formula One czar Bernie Ecclestone was sold by RM Auctions in Monterey, Calif., for US $8.2 million. “The von Krieger Special Roadster is already a special car, yet it ranks superior to other examples because of its unrivaled condition, history and provenance," said David Gooding before the auction. "Its complete restoration, beautiful story and thoroughly documented history make it absolutely extraordinary and perhaps the finest 540K Special Roadster in existence. It is the most exciting pre-war Mercedes-Benz I've ever known." Gooding thought the Mercedes might break the alltime auction record of $16.4 million that was set a year earlier by his auction house when it sold a prototype 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa. Alas, it was not to be, but US $11.77 million made the late aristocrat's car the highest price ever for any Mercedes sold at auction.

Less “global” in Toyota’s North American offerings With the globe becoming a more homogenous place, some automakers are building the same car for many countries. Meanwhile the Toyota Avalon was designed for North America without any input from Japan. Freaky.

T

oraditionally, Toyota’s North American division sold cars that were mostly designed in Japan and then modified on this side of the ocean to suit our tastes. But now the stealthy one has learned that Toyota will offer cars and trucks that have been autonomously created here with zero input from head office, which is a practice that’s exactly opposite to what other automakers are doing. The first example of this approach will be the upcoming 2013 Avalon sedan that was entirely developed at Toyota’s Michigan research centre with zero assistance from Japan. It will be built with 90 per cent of its parts sourced locally. The next step in this newfound autonomy will be the development of both engines and transmissions in North America. In future, look for other Japan-based companies to embrace this approach.

Looking like a larger version of the Tucson, the Santa Fe five-passenger has more room and more power while the seven-passenger version can seat seven people.

Two sizes to keep families of all sizes on the move.

By MALCOLM GUNN

o, two sizes of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe are on the menu. It seems familiar. Mitsubishi recently got the ball rolling in this direction for the 2011 model year when it introduced the RVR in Canada, which is a shortened version of its regular-length Outlander. On a grander scale, General Motors and Ford employ this approach with their big-and-beefy sport utes while a number of minivans once offered two body sizes. Even Hyundaiowned Kia made two lengths of its Sedona minivan. But since passenger-car-based tall wagons have replaced much of the minivan trade, Hyundai is also applying the two-sizes-fits-all approach to its thirdgeneration Santa Fe that launches later this summer. Actually it’s the shorter-wheelbase five-passenger iteration that arrives first, followed by the extendedlength seven-passenger Santa Fe in early 2013. The face of each, while differing slightly, feature Hyundai’s signature hexagonal grille. A prominent crease extending along each side and flowing over the taillights replaces the previous Santa Fe’s more rounded look. The entire design is both conservative, yet entirely stylish, and should be greeted by approving nods from most shoppers. Dimensionally, the five-passenger Santa Fe is similar to the 2012 Santa Fe, as both have identical distance between the front and rear wheels. The upcoming seven-passenger Santa Fe, however, is about 21.5 centimetres longer overall, about 10 centimetres longer between the front and rear wheels and has 16 per cent more cargo space behind the secondrow seat. The seven-passenger Santa Fe is understandably heftier than the five-passenger— by more than 180 kilograms, actually — which explains why it’s sole powerplant is a 290-horsepower 3.3-litre V6 that replaces the previously optional 274-horsepower 3.5-litre

V6. Conversely, the five-passenger model, now lighter than the outgoing Santa Fe by an impressive 121 kilograms, can be had with a base 190-horsepower 2.4litre four-cylinder, or an optional 264-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. Regardless of your chosen engine, a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift controls is all that’s offered. That might not be welcome news for the relatively small percentage of manual-gearbox fans, but at least Hyundai will allow you to match your selected engine with its latest all-wheel-drive setup. The system includes what Hyundai calls Torque Vectoring Corner Control (TVCC) that continuously monitors driving conditions and can instantaneously direct the correct amount of power or braking force to any single wheel at a time. This helps steer the vehicle in the desired direction (which is the vectoring part). TVCC is most helpful in slippery road conditions, but it also helps the driver negotiate turns with added precision. The front-wheel-drive 2.4-litre I4 gets an estimated 10.4 l/100 km in city driving and 7.0 highway, while AWD will raise these numbers a bit. Santa Fe features plenty of standard convenience items, along with some unexpected treats such Driver Selectable Steering Mode with a “Normal” setting, “Comfort” (reduces steering effort by 10 per cent) and “Sport” (increases effort by the same amount). Turbo models add performance suspension components (stiffer shocks and stabilizer bars) 19-inch wheels (17s are standard), fancier gauge cluster, push-button start, heated front seats (eight-way powered for the driver). Not unexpectedly, the up level V6 offers a wider selection of content over the base, such as dual-zone climate control, leather seat covers and second-row captain’s chairs that reduce maximum capacity to six from seven passengers. As of this writing, pricing has yet to be released, but the five-passenger model will likely start at about $26,000 (including destination charges), with the longer Santa Fe adding roughly $4,000. Both promise to provide spirited performance and impressive fuel economy as their primary virtues, with good looks and practical packaging also coming along for the ride.

It takes hours to recharge an electric car, but a breakthrough could mean a full charge in a minute or less.

1

A full charge in a minute: Scientists in South Korea have developed a lithium-ion battery that can be recharged 30-120times faster than current-generation units, in some cases enabling a full recharge from empty in less than a minute. That

would be a game-changer, especially if the new technology was even remotely affordable to the average consumer. Networks of carbonized graphite within the batteries effectively act like blood vessels, allowing every part of it to be recharged at the same time, unlike existing batteries, accelerating recharge rates to unheard-of speeds. Such ultra fast-charging batteries aren't expected to be cheap, reports high-tech magazine Extreme Tech, which presents a problem since the battery packs now in use are already too costly for most car shoppers.

States say livestock trumps ethanol for fuel:

The Ford Fusion possesses some high-tech NASA-style metals in its engine construction.

Automakers might turn to an unlikely source to reduce fuel consumption and pollution, reports the Wall Street Journal financial newspaper: Formula One racing cars. Just weeks ahead of the firstever F1 race in Austin, Tex., the WSJ notes that F1 technologies now being developed could make better use of kinetic energy in road-going passenger cars, making them burn less fuel and produce fewer greenhouse gases. One such system draws heavily from the F1-developed flywheel hybrid system known as Kinetic Energy Recovery System, or KERS. A small flywheel is electrically spun up during braking, the rotation of which can be converted to electricity to power an electric helper motor(s) when needed. Early this year a KERS-equipped car won the Barcelona Grand Prix, while Audi's R18 e-tron was the first-ever hybrid to win at Le Mans.

How much does it cost to get incremental gains in fuel performance? Honda spent US $220 million.

Honda's Ohio engine and transmission plants in Anna and Russells Point have begun producing the company's new "Earth Dreams" powertrains, a new generation of engines and transmission due to make their U.S. debut in the all-new 2013 Honda Accord, now also in production at Marysville, Ohio. Honda has made a huge investment in the debut of its new direct-fuel-injection 2.4-litre four-cylinder, new continuously variable transmission as well as a 3.5-litre V6 and optional six-speed automatic transmission, spending US $220 million on expansions, casting operations and automated lines, with the capacity to make 1.8 million units a year. Said to be good for 10 per cent better fuel economy than its current engines, the new ones will eventually also power other models in the Honda lineup.

new oil in coming years and in an effort to reduce consumption, researchers at the Netherlands' Eindhoven University of Technology say they've developed a vehicle coating that not only self-heals scratches, but also promises to relieve car owners from the tiresome task of washing their cars. They say their discovery will enable the creation of water-resistant coatings that could be applied to cars so that superficial scratches heal themselves and water droplets roll off the car, taking dirt with them. This would mean, says emerging technology Web site, Gizmag, that instead of washing it, all that would be required to keep a car beaming "is an occasional rain shower."

U.S. states that depend on the livestock industry are asking Washington to ease pressure on corn prices by suspending rules that sends a large share of the crop to produce ethanol, says Scientific American magazine. Roughly 13 billion gallons of ethanol are due to be blended with gasoline this year under a federal renewable fuels mandate meant to bolster domestic energy sources. Livestock farmers complain that demand for ethanol "wrongly diverts" much of the feed corn they need, and drives up prices already inflated by record drought conditions being experienced this year across much of the country. Georgia Governor Nathal Deal says poultry farmers are spending US $1.4 million more per day, due to drought and the ethanol rules.

By MALCOLM GUNN

he fuel consumption is only one of this Camry's many tricks, as a week of city and highway travel reveals. Not with a bang but a whimper is how T.S. Eliot's poem "The Hollow Men" concludes. That also pretty much describes how the Toyota's latest Camry Hybrid starts up. Pressing the hybrid's "ON" button initially produces nary a sound, but does cause the dashboard gauge pods and control panel to glow. But wait a few seconds and the gasoline engine portion of the duo gently comes to life as a reminder that it too is an integral part of the powertrain. Studying the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of the Camry Hybrid involved a 3,000-kilometere excursion across a variety of city and country thoroughfares. It was far from an economy run, considering that temperatures for the seven-day adventure averaged 30 C, necessitating the air conditioning to operate at full blast for much of the trip. As well, the hybrid was weighted down with plenty of luggage for two, not to mention the spoils from quaint village "shoppes" and nondescript malls alike. From the outset, the idea was to drive the Camry as if it were any gasoline-powered vehicle. On the highway the general flow of traffic was matched, which usually meant driving 15-25 km/h above the posted limits, with occasional passing bursts above that range. At no time was

Transport Canada rates the Camry Hybrid at about 4.7 l/100 km in combined city/highway. Driving "normally" with lots of gear and the air conditioning at full blast, we still knocked down between 6.7 and 7.1.

there any attempt to mimic so-called "hypermilers" who brazenly commit to achieving ultralow fuel-consumption numbers, no matter how much horn-honking and verbal abuse is directed at them for getting in the way of other drivers. The hybrid-specific gauges that provided operational status feedback (power, eco or charging, and average fuel economy) were interesting to observe, but in this instance they purposely didn't influence typical driving behaviours.

Transport Canada fuel economy? Heck, we take the Camry Hybrid on a road trip to see what it's really like. There's a bit less trunk space in the hybrid than the standard Camry.

The hybrid interior adds a few buttons and extra gauges to track consumption, but otherwise it's just like a regular Camry.

One part of the Camry Hybrid that did influence the drive, however, was the brakes. They seemed to grab when you didn't want them to and occasionally required a heavy foot when grabbing would be preferable (a nonlinear annoyance common to many hybrids). As a precautionary measure, strict tailgating avoidance became de rigeur, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing. When all was said and done, the Camry hybrid performed admirably. Average real-world fuel economy remained consistently in the 6.77.1 l/100 km range in combined city/highway driving. That's nowhere near Transport Canada's unrealistic claim of 4.7, but it's still pretty decent given the extenuating weather, load factor and exuberant driving circumstances. In addition, the switches that activate the "Eco" mode (tones down the hybrid's power output) or EV mode (offers brief bursts of electric-only operation) were rarely fiddled with. But the Camry hybrid's true strength, especially on long trips, is providing plenty of comfortable stretch-out room for front- and rearseat passengers alike. It's like getting mid-size accommodations, but with the fuel consumption

of a compact car. A minor drawback is the 13 per cent reduction in trunk volume when compared to gasoline-only Camry. What was also most accommodating was the hybrid's 156-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that co-ordinates with a 141-horsepower electric motor for a combined 200 horsepower. That's up from the 2011 Camry's total of 187 horses, but a weight reduction of about 115 kilograms helped give the hybrid plenty of uphill and passing prowess (zero to 100 km/h takes about 7.5 seconds). As well, the built-in steps of the continuously variable transmission (CVT) make it feel more like a multi-gear automatic. It's a combination that even die-hard CVT-avoiders could live with. The Camry hybrid is a competent piece of eco-hardware and without question is a cut or two above the first-gen model. Like an obedient servant, it's the epitome of quiet, efficient conservatism that makes an ideal travel partner on journeys both short and long. It’s tagged with an on-the-road starting price of $28,600 for the LE model. That makes the Camry hybrid a familyfriendly fuel saver without equal.
