Created from a need for economical transportation during the gasrationing period of the 1950s, the Mini was an overnight hit with the public. Originally part of the Morris Motors stable, the Mini lost the “Morris” designation when the company merged with British Motors Corporation (BMC). Designed by Alec Issigonis, it was the first front-wheel-drive car with a transversely (sideways) mounted engine. This configuration, and the resulting stubby hood, allowed maximum allotment of space to the surprisingly roomy interior. Although the first production model in 1959 suffered from quality issues, it gained a cult following with the “Swinging-’60s” jet-setters. Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones owned one. So did Paul McCartney and John
Lennon of the Beatles. Exotic-car builder Enzo Ferrari had three. Famed race-car builder John Cooper envisioned a performance version of the Mini and convinced BMC to let him develop the Cooper model. It proved an instant success on the European rally circuit. By 1970, British Leyland Motors took over the company and the Cooper name was dropped as a cost-saving measure. A few years ago, BMW purchased the rights to both the Mini and Cooper names, resurrecting a legend and the public’s love affair with the little car that could. Today, the Mini brand is as prolific as ever with the resurrection of the Cooper name and numerous new models.

t’s a common joke that every set of exhaust headers should include a really big hammer in the shipping box. Okay, well it’s a common joke around this office, anyway. I have the worst luck with headers. They start out shiny and new and, once installed, end up looking like
S P ECI A L D R I VI NG F EATURE
they were dropped down a mineshaft from all the manhandling. Not all headers are problematic; just the ones we buy, apparently. Actually, maybe it’s the cars we build. Headers are a necessary performance component, as they reduce restriction to help an engine clear the cylinders of spent gases during the exhaust stroke of the piston. Traditional cast-iron manifolds can do this, but usually at a certain point they just won’t flow any more
and the engine can’t breath, which means it won’t rev any higher. In a stock engine designed for manifolds, this is not a problem, but as our new 331-cubic-inch V8 soars to 7,000 rpm with ease, factory exhaust manifolds designed for a smaller engine with less camshaft and cylinder-head flow might cost us 100 horsepower or more. So, if you’re dropping in a performance engine, guess what: you’re putting in headers whether you want to, and no matter what it takes. What’s the big deal, you’re wondering. Just open up the catalog and order something for the year, make and model of car. That’s all well and good…for a car that has no other modifications. You see, once you put in a new steering crossmember – regular readers might recall that we switched the 1965 Mustang to rack-and-pinion steering – different cylinder heads, a different clutch linkage and new engine mounts that likely slightly change the location of the engine, it’s highly improbable that a set of catalog headers will fit without a hammer. How could they. And of course they didn’t. And of course we knew this. So, we brought our own hammer to the party, and a grinder. A lot of people fuss over the style of headers they want to buy: four-into-one long-tube; tri-Y; and shorty. Each has its merits, but at this point all I wanted was something that actually fit the car properly. We paid about $700 for Hooker Headers “Super Comp” ceramic-coated fulllength (as in they go down and under the car) header kit that was supposed to fit both the engine and the chassis of a stock 1965 Mustang. We couldn’t verify this since we had neither. They sure looked nice out of the box, though, but for some reason a six-inch section on the driver’s side had to be gently pounded in with a hammer to clear the frame rail.
T U E S D A Y, O C T O B E R 1 6 , 2 0 1 2
D3
On the passenger side, we had to whip out the grinder and make a sizeable cut in the steering cross-brace, which of course the header company had no idea we would be using. In all but the strangest cases where clearance is not an issue, you have to have the engine installed before you can mount the headers. That usually means that the headers have to go in from the bottom. It’s better if the car is on a lift so the headers can be wiggled around under the car. Once they’re finally in place, there’s the small matter of putting in the bolts: eight per side, 16 in total. Now, this is not like bolting on a barn door. For example, if you put in the front bolt and tighten it all the way, you won’t get the other seven bolts in on that side. You kind of have to put them all in at the time same time, a turn at a time, pulling the header away from the engine as you do it so the bolt heads don’t bind up on the tight pipe curves. Simple. Not that you can get your fingers or a wrench or socket between the bolts, the headers and the ‘65 Mustang’s inner fenders. And then you realize you forgot the gaskets and have to begin all over again. Next time, the rest of the exhaust is put together. But as you’ll find out, we don’t bend pipe. We buy bends and make our own pipe.
There’s plenty of clearance for the three-inch collector pipes that the four 1 5/8-inch primary pipes dump into.

By MALCOLM GUNN
t’s hard to imagine that a 25-year-old car could still be the basis of comparison for all other sports cars, with almost none of them ever coming close to the sheer visceral standard set by the Ferrari F40.
Even its immediate successor, the F50, which many argued was better looking, had a tough time winning the same kind of praise commanded by the F40. Perhaps that’s the way Enzo would have wanted it.
The standard by which all other cars, even Ferraris, are judged
L I N E S
F E R R A R I
The F40 was personally conceived by founder Enzo Ferrari as a dual-purpose car. One that could be driven at the race track and then legally on the street, just like most of his earlier creations dating back to the late 1940s. When his concept was launched in June of 1987, the then 90-year-old head of the company was on hand to personally endorse the end result. It was the last such introduction Enzo attended before his death the following year. The F40 (the name was picked to celebrate 40 years of Ferrari creations) was a fitting tribute to a man whose life’s obsession was to produce race cars for the street. Using the earlier Ferrari GTO as a template (itself a derivative of the popular mid-engine 308 series made famous by Tom Selleck’s Magnum P.I. TV detective character), Ferrari engineers wrung every last bit of juice they could from the engine. The displacement of the DOHC V8 powerplant was slightly increased to 2.9 litres and the boost on the twin turbochargers was nearly doubled to 16.2 pounds per square inch (the GTO’s boost was set at 8.5). The result: a startling 471 horsepower and 426 pound-feet of torque, enough to push this rocket with the prancing-horse logo to 96 km/h in 3.5 seconds and achieve a top velocity of 320 km/h. In 1987, that was enough thrust to claim top-dog honours on most road courses, as well as on any stretch of public highway. As a combination race/road car, the F40 was stripped of as much unnecessary heft as possible. Less weight makes for a quicker, better-handling vehicle. Strong but ultra-light (and ultra-expensive) carbon-fibre materials were extensively used inside and out, and the F40’s signature piece, a see-through slotted engine-bay cover, was also made of high-strength composites. Both the front and rear bodywork were one-piece units that opened wide for easy access to the car’s vital organs. There was also a wing perched well above the rear deck.
F 4 0
Further weight savings were visible, or rather, invisible, inside the F40’s cockpit, where the absence of exotic leather-covered seats, door panels or sound deadening material of any kind made the car appear unfinished. It was also devoid of windows that rolled up and down, replaced instead by a sliding a plexiglass opening above both doors. Both front seats featured race-car-style deep bolsters, and the driver’s seat could be ordered in one of three sizes. Available air conditioning was the F40’s sole concession to passenger pampering. As with any Ferrari, handling and stopping power are equally important to brute speed. The F40’s suspension closely resembled that of a period Ferrari Formula One car, while the four-piston disc brakes were capable of successive high-speed panic stops without fade. As a final touch, Pirelli created a new tire to keep the F40 firmly planted on the road. Dubbed the P-Zero, the low-profile (40-series in front and 35-series in back) tires were affixed to 17-inch-diameter wheels (large in the day) and were nearly as wide as those found on an Indy or Grand Prix race car. Surprisingly, the only area where the F40 failed to best the competition was aerodynamics. Although the car appeared highly streamlined, its 0.34 drag coefficient was considered only average when the car was first introduced. Today, there are minivans that equal that number. Aside from air conditioning, the very few options available on the F40 were primarily for racing purposes and included a lighter five-speed manual transmission with straight-cut gears. There was also an optional turbocharger package that added an extra 200 horsepower to the engine’s already formidable output. Initial European-only F40s were base-priced at about $190,000. However, by the time the car arrived in North America three years later, the price escalated to $260,000. Still, there was no shortage of buyers willing to cough up the necessary funds for their very own copy, and every one of the 400 cars (of a total production run of 950) destined for our shores was quickly snapped up. Because of their inherently high investment value, few F40s were ever competitively track raced. This fact might have saddened Enzo Ferrari, who passionately believed in racing above all else. As the dual-purpose ideal fades from view in this age of specially constructed race cars, the F40 stands as a final salute to an earlier and much simpler age with fewer compromises.
If it didn’t make the F40 go faster, turn harder or stop better, it wasn’t on the car. So, form followed function. There were no creature comforts, although air conditioning could be ordered and was probably a good idea, as the plastic windows did not roll down.

f a hatchback is on your radar, the Hyundai Elantra GT with its “Fluidic Sculpture” design language might prove to be just the right thirstquencher. In a world gone mad for small, fuel-efficient cars – not surprising given today’s pump prices – Hyundai’s compact lineup attempts to cover the bases. Looking for a traditional four-door model? Then try the Elantra sedan on for size. Or perhaps you’re desirous of something a tad sportier? Well there’s the new-for-2013 Coupe for your consideration. The GT fills the void left by the departing Elantra Touring model, but not in the most direct way. Although neatly styled, the Touring was first and foremost a wagon, while the more rounded GT is definitely hatchback-oriented. Yes, the lines between hatch and wagon tend to get a bit fuzzy, but with about an 18-centimetre deficit in overall length and 20 per cent less total cargo space (with the rear seats folded), the GT qualifies for membership as a hatchback. An added bonus is the GT’s slippery-shaped design that rivals the Coupe’s, although all three Elantras are handsome rigs in their own way. The GT’s Hyundai Veloster-style open-mouth grille/ air intake resembles the Coupe’s, with both body styles eschewing the sedan’s more conservative schnoz. What is common to all three is a snazzy interior layout that showcases an attractively textured dashboard featuring large twin gauge pods for the speedometer and tachometer. A meaty, sportsstyle steering wheel attached to a tilt/telescoping steering wheel is included, while aluminum pedals are optional. In back, a 60:40 split rear bench folds relatively flat. By Hyundai’s slide rule, the GT has more cargo and passenger room than several of its peers, including the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Mazda3 hatches. The GT as well as the rest of the Elantra trio, operates with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque. The peppy little mill is rated at 7.2 l/100 km in the city and 4.9 highway when connected to a six-speed manual transmission, and 7.3/5.0 with the optional six-speed automatic. In combined city and highway driving, Hyundai claims the GT possesses about a 720-kilometre maximum range, which is as much a function of gas-tank size as it is fuel economy. It also doesn’t hurt that, at a relatively light 2,783 pounds, the GT is 70-90 kilograms lighter than its primary rivals. For serious drivers, the GT’s firm suspension with stiffer springs, shocks and stabilizer bars is definitely appreciated. A “Driver Selectable Steering Mode” can be set to Comfort (added power steering boost for aroundtown driving and parking), Sport (for a weightier feel on twisty highways) and Normal (that combines some of both). Opt for the extra-cost Style Package you’ll get sportier suspension tuning and lower-profile 17inch tires (16-inchers are standard).
The standard - and only - engine is a 138-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder.
Hyundai has become as proficient at tidy interior design as it has at the outside details.
The GT speaks our kind of language.
Design language.
The GT starts at $20,650, with destination costs and a whole bunch of standard stuff included in that sum. Among the highlights are air conditioning, heated seats and outside mirrors, sliding armrest tilt and telescoping steering wheel and Bluetooth short-range wireless connectivity with voice recognition. Then there are a couple of option packages that bundle a panoramic sunroof, leather seats and other trinkets into one group while putting dualzone climate control, a navigation system and a rearview camera in another. Selecting a handy-dandy hatchback and sprinkling it with some performance-like attitude seems like a tempting way to go about your business. That especially applies to the Elantra GT, which also thumbs its nose at gas pumps while toting life’s treasures, human and otherwise. And don’t forget a shot of Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture to help wash it all down.
It’s shorter than the Elantra Touring it replaces, but with this kind of high style it’s unlikely anyone will miss the space.

You get what you pay for: a seemingly good deal on a new aftermarket exhaust turns out to be a mess of restrictive, kinked bends. At least it sort of fits. We might address this later with a system pieced together with sections of kink-free mandrel bends.
Most people buy mufflers for the way they might sound, or maybe the fit. Not us.
The Borla Pro XS stainlesssteel mufflers did not arrive polished like this. It took a couple of hours to get the cases to look like this.

ufflers? Like most things automotive, you don’t get to try the stuff before you buy it, which means that sometimes you end up with stuff that you don’t want and can’t return. When it comes to mufflers, you can’t really tell if you’ll like them until they’re on the car. And if you don’t like them, then that’s just too bad. You’re out the money. It’s a leap of faith. Most of the bigger companies have audio clips on their Web sites so you can get an idea. Still, though, you don’t really know how they’ll sound on your particular ride until they’re installed. To illustrate the point, for our 1965 Mustang project we chose Flowmaster mufflers, mostly because they generally sound fantastic and they last pretty much forever. And on our Mustang, they do sound great, but they’re incredibly loud (Flowmaster has many “series” of mufflers with different volumes and we chose the loudest, of course) and the interior drone at 115 km/h – about 2,000 rpm – is exhausting. These same mufflers were actually fine when we had our mild 289cubic-inch V8, but hooked to our new 482-horsepower 331-cubic-inch V8, the volume has been cranked up a notch or two. Since the car isn’t driven all that much, it’s livable. It’s actually too bad, anyway, they’re on the car now. Our 1963 Corvette presented a much different challenge. We were after a particular look and not necessarily a sound because you can actually see the mufflers from the back of the car. But this is a full-on-restoration project, so we began with an aftermarket reproduction stock-style exhaust system. It should have been all over with right then and there. The main pipes are quite large, but where the mufflers join, the size starts dropping. By the time it’s over, the tailpipes are less than two inches in diameter,
which really chokes down a performance car. Our rebuilt and modified original 327-cubic-inch V8 made a stout 391 horsepower (31 more than the top rating for the year), so we want to make sure as much of that gets to the wheels as possible. We started searching for replacement mufflers with larger, less-restrictive plumbing, but came up empty. The snag is that the inlet/outlet tubing has some compound angles to tilt the mufflers in the right direction: up at the back and angled outboard and twisted a bit. As luck would have it, we ran across a pair of Borla-brand stainless-steel mufflers in an Ebay auction that were slightly smaller than the stock Corvette mufflers, but with large 2.5-inch inlets and outlets. Although the entry and exit points were correct – side inlet, centre outlet – we had to fabricate the curved pipe sections and make sure that the new larger tips would be dead-centre in the rear valance cut-outs below the bumper. The larger the tips, the closer they get to the edges. Well, talk about fiddling with something. We purchased a nice 2.5-inch diameter stainless-steel “U” bend and cut it up to try to get the right angle. We also used a After the angles were figured out and the parts tack-welded together while they piece in the front and kept trimming and turning the pipe to get the right angle and were on the car, it’s time for final welding. look. We used straps and tack-welded some brackets in place to secure everything for the final piece of the puzzle: cutting the right angle for the tips and setting the length. I’m not a fan of the factory tips that stick out 10 centimetres. I like more of tailored look, so the tips were cut shorter so they only protrude a half inch or so. Getting the angle just right is tougher than it seems because the tips also curve downward and inward to meet the mufflers. So, while it’s possible to turn the tip slightly to make up for a crooked cut, doing this puts the tip off-centre in the valance cutout. After almost a full afternoon of mucking around, we had it figured out and tack-welded together. The really cool part is that, because the mufflers are tilted, they’re in plain site. After a couple of hours of polishing the stainless-steel casings before it was all welded together, the mufflers looked like jewelry. Yes, it does have sort of a tough rumble, but it’s the one time when it comes to mufflers that we put sight over sound. The simple fact is that we wouldn’t have known how any muffler sounded before we put it on so why not go for the right Attention to detail is crucial in areas of visual interest. And while not precisely look. replicating the original equipment, the look, sound and power is dramatically enhanced.

e didn’t really invent anything and he didn’t really have a burning passion for automobiles. And, given his choice, Henry Ford II would have preferred a bottle or two of red wine at a cafe in the Bordeaux region of France over a beer at a bar in Dearborn, Mich. On the surface, Henry Ford II, grandson to the automotive pioneer Henry Ford, was nothing like his legendary relative. Inside, however, he was every bit as driven. Talented, tenacious and born with an acid tongue, “Hank the Deuce,” as the auto press once labelled him, might never have set an assembly line in motion or turned the crank on an engine, but he was just as influential for both. As The Detroit News wrote during the celebration of the Ford centennial in 2003, “What Henry Ford did with machines, Henry Ford II did with manpower.” Perhaps it was the only way when you grow up in a family layered with foresight, innovation and historical meaning. Go his own way? Ford II did. In 1945, he took over a company in decline and cemented it as a global player, placing the business in the right countries and the right people in the right positions. Whether it was the hiring of 10 legendary managers, later labelled the “Whiz Kids” for their youth and automotive talent, or the empowering of Lee Iacocca, a 1946 hire and the marketing mastermind behind the Ford Mustang, Ford II seemed to always have his finger on the right folks. At the very least, he always had his opinions. On the premature death of his father, Edsel: “My grandfather killed my father in my mind. I know he died of cancer, but it was because of what my grandfather did to him,” Ford II once said. On his own personal motto: “Never complain, never explain.” Ford II did little of both, and he expected the same of those around him. Perhaps that side did come naturally. At the very least, destiny enveloped him. Early pictures showed Ford II in his grandfather’s arms, holding a torch that ignited the blast furnace at the company’s Rouge plant in Dearborn, Mich., once the assembly heart and soul of the Ford empire. Henry Ford II even owned a miniature sports car that he raced around the family’s 90-acre estate that was located nearby. A Navy man at an early age, Ford II was serving in the Second World War when his father, then the company president, suddenly died in 1943. Henry Ford, elderly and ailing, took over the family business until the end of the war, but nearly ran it into the ground. The company was losing more than $10 million a month and mismanagement had toppled the giant from its perch as the Number One automaker in the United States to third spot.

Automotive legends and heroes
By many accounts, Henry Ford II took on personal challenges and even held grudges, some of which extended to motorsports. When a deal to purchase Ferrari fell through in the 1960s, Ford used his company to wage a personal war on Ferrari on the international endurance-racing scene. Here, in 1966, he celebrates a 24 Hours of Le Mans (France) victory with drivers Bruce McLaren (left) and Chris Amon (right). After making his point that he gets what he wants - Ford, the company, promptly left endurance racing.
As it turns out, it’s possible to run a successful automobile business without really knowing much about cars. Two years later, Ford II, the Yale dropout and the kid who hadn’t received much grooming in the business, waded into company waters that were teeming with inefficiencies, liabilities and chaos. Ford II rose to the challenge and immediately adopted a new management style while restructuring and modernizing the company. “He was visionary in this sense,” said Robert McNamara, one of the “Whiz Kids,” in an interview with the Institute of International Studies at the University of California-Berkley. “He realized that he was going into an old-line company that was in the deepest of trouble. He needed outsiders to help turn the company around.”
Illustrated By GREG PERRY
Ford bombed with its Edsel model, a vehicle that was only remembered for its $250 million loss in the late 1950s. And Ford’s mercurial management style didn’t always sit well with everyone. He hired Iacocca, but fired the future Chrysler Corp. chief in 1978 over personal differences. Biographer Booten Herndon described Ford II as “charming, gracious and totally inconsiderate.” He lived larger than life, with homes in London, England, and the affluent Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe. He was married three times and he ran a water-tight ship. “He was going to do to people what his grandfather did to machines,” former Ford president Arjay Miller told author Robert Lacey in 1986. But Ford II made it all work. Before his retirement as CEO in 1979, Ford chairman in 1980 and his eventual death in September of 1987, he left a lasting impression. He championed civil rights, improved labour-management relations and steered Ford into Europe by creating the first pan-European auto company, Ford of Europe. “I think Henry always wanted to compete with his grandfather,” Miller said. Even if he was so drastically different.

HISTORY The Ford Escape was launched for the 2001 model year and joined a growing class of compact sport utility vehicles. Along with its diminutive dimensions, the Escape operated with reasonably fuel-efficient engines, including a 127-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder and an optional 201-horsepower 3.0-litre V6. The 2005 model year was met with revised interior/exterior styling along with the Escape Hybrid that merged a 133-horse fourcylinder with an electric motor for 155 net horsepower. Elsewhere, a 153-horsepower 2.3-litre four-cylinder became the base engine. The Escape was redesigned for 2008, although the powerteams basically carried over.
THE GOOD STUFF The Escape’s attributes were highlighted by a roomy five-passenger interior plus cargo room that equalled or exceeded that of many of its rivals. Ride, handling and braking qualities were also considered above average. Ford’s littlest sport ute also proved that a simple, yet attractive and efficient design went a long way toward winning over buyers. The interior featured an easy-tograsp control panel plus a spacious floor console that was large enough to stow a small purse. Both front- and all-wheel-drive models offered decent ground clearance, which allowed the Escape to actually go off road so long as the terrain wasn’t terribly inhospitable.
Variations
Ford Escape 2001-’07
2005 Hybrid
PRICES AT A GLANCE
Escapes are plentiful and competitively priced. Fullyloaded Limited versions will be at the high end of the scale while in-demand Hybrid models will likely sell for up to $5,000 more than comparable gas-only models.
2008 redesign
HEADS UP! Early (2001-’04) four-cylinder models fitted with the optional four-speed automatic transmission were easy on gas, but were also rather sluggish. The four-cylinder available in 2005-’07 Escapes was a far better base-engine pick, although neither were a match for the V6. The five-speed manual transmission was only available with the four-cylinder. Note that the 2005 and up models featured significant interior improvements. Wind noise was an issue, while lowering the rear seat for added cargo room required the headrests to be removed. Remember that the 2001-’07 Escape was considered an entry-level sport utility, so you can expect your candidate to be a bit raw and utilitarian.
Year range 2001-2002 2003-2004 2005-2006 2007
Approx. price range $3,000-$6,500 $5,000-$8,500 $7,000-$17,000(Hybrid) $11,000-$19,000(Hybrid)
*The higher end of a given price range represents vehicles with more options and fewer kilometres.
OVERALL The 2001-’07 Escape was a straightforward, affordable sport ute that became a best seller for Ford as well as its relations that sold the vehicle under other labels. The vehicle is considered as durable and fuel-efficient as its peers and it still looks good. In other words, anyone planning to take the Escape route shouldn’t be disappointed.

Drawing Board 2013 Mazda CX-9: The largest member of Mazda’s wagon train will arrive later this year or in early 2013 largely unchanged, with the exception of sophisticated front-end update. The Ford-based 273-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 and six-speed automatic transmission will carry over, however, it’s suspected that Mazda’s engine magicians might have found a way to eke out a bit more distance per litre of fuel.
Auto Trivia ★ Starting in 1934, before automated crash simulators, General Motors used actual drivers who would leap from their vehicles before ramming them into barriers. ★ A 2002 TV Guide ranked My Mother The Car (1965-’66) as the second worst program ever, topped only by The Jerry Springer show.
Who am I? To guess his secret identit y, read the following clues! 1) He was Born in Belgium on Christmas Day in 1909. 2) In his early years he lived in Russia and Germany and obtained a degree in engineering in 1934. 3) He envisioned the Corvette as a performance, youth-oriented machine. 4) He lobbied for the Corvette to gain V8 power. 5) He also created Rochester fuel injection and developed a special racing version of the Corvette called the Grand Sport.
Still stumped?
What’s up, auto doc? Is an electric car right for you? A growing number of people would probably say yes to this question if it weren’t for a few fundamental knocks, relative to internal-combustion vehicles. Sadly, these have almost nothing to do with the way electric cars ride and drive, which is really as good as any internal -combustion vehicle. And they’re usually much quieter. The first knock is that they, as yet, don’t go very far on a charge and the recharge takes hours, which means you’re stuck for a while. This largely relegates electric cars to local duty where you can complete all your daily errands and get back home without running out of juice. Plug in for the night and start all over again. You would need to weigh whether this is worth never having to go to the gas station again as well as the extra cost for an electric vehicle, which is about double that of a comparable (well-equipped) four cylinder compact. But the biggest knock of all is selection. Of the 250 or so different vehicle nameplates available to buyers, there are only a few electrics, most notably the Nissan Leaf. Until that increases to meet the practical needs of daily transportation, electric cars will continue to be fringe players. eBay watch 1964 Volkswagen Safari Microbus, sold, US $43,100: Of all the original Beetle styles, the Microbus is one of the most sought-after, particularly those ringed with windows along each side of the body and roof. The 21 Window models could transport up to nine passengers, or as many people as you could cram inside since there were no seat-belt laws then. This van also features an updated powertrain and optional sliding canvass roof and pop-out windows, which increased its value. The selling price was actually fair for this rare bug bus. Maps for your ears
The fertile minds of designers Svetlana Blum Briscella and John Briscella of Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Aminimal Studio have come up with one of the more novel jewelry themes around. Their collection of earrings and pendants consists of miniature road maps, or portions of road maps, that feature selected cities in the United States as well as other worldwide locales. Along with specific areas of their New York City hometown, the variety includes parts of Los Angeles, Calif., (Beverly Hills), Las Vegas, Nev., San Francisco, Calif., Boston. Mass., Chicago, Ill., Minneapolis. Minn., and Miami, Fla., to name just a few. All of their jewelry pieces are cast in stainless steel and are quite reasonably priced at $40 a set. You can examine the collection for yourself and place your order at www.aminimalstudio.com.
Licence to steal
Your licence plate and registration tags are worth a small fortune to a thief and could be used in a variety of illegal ways, from avoiding tollbooth and parking fees to committing much more serious felonies. With thefts of this nature reportedly on the rise, it’s worth it to protect yourself from having your vehicular identity stolen with a Platesafe kit from Camisasca Automotive Mfg. The product consists of a heavy-gauge stainless steel licence-plate frame plus a clear cover made from impact-resistant polycarbonate. You also receive a set of two tamper-proof security caps that you attach using the existing frame screws. PlateSafe comes with a four-year warranty. Each set sells for US $50 and can be ordered through www.camincstore.com.
Help for the stranded
When you’re out highway driving this winter, or heading well away from civilization, you should consider packing some emergency provisions. The Essential Survival Kit from The Wise Company allows you to transport all of life’s basic necessities for one person to live on for two weeks, or two people for one week, all stored in a single fivekilogram backpack. The food consists 44 servings of various freeze-dried meals that, when properly stored, have a 25-year shelf life. In addition you get a portable stove with fuel pellets, water filtration bottle, cutlery set, waterproof matches, first-aid kit, flashlight/toolkit, two Mylar sleeping bags, work gloves and other handy items. The kit retails for US $179 and can be ordered from the manufacturer at www.wisefoodstorage.com.
The ‘Vette turns 60
Hard to imagine, but what is considered North America’s first sports car turns 60 in 2013. Author Randy Leffingwell has considerably experience writing about the Corvette and produced a weighty coffeetable tome on the subject’s 50th anniversary. His latest book expands on the topic and includes photos (many never before published), descriptions and considerable commentary on all six generations of Corvettes, from 1953 to the present day. Leffingwell also reviews the people who have influenced the car’s development, including designers, engineers, marketers and racing drivers. For hard-core enthusiasts and casual observers alike, Corvette Sixty Years is a must-have read. Your local bookstore will likely carry it, or order a copy online for US $31.50 from www.amazon.com.
