Meet LeaAnn Gomez New principal at Driggs Elementary TVN Staff Like many staff and teachers in the Teton School District, LeaAnn Gomez will be wearing more than one hat. Gomez moves into the principal position at Driggs Elementary School from her sixth-grade English teaching post at Teton Middle School this year. She will also be teaching the half-day kindergarten class at DES. About 18 children are registered for her class this year.
Q A
What is your background, including family?
While growing up my family lived in many of the western states however, the majority of my time was spent in Las Vegas, NV. My father was born and raised here in the valley and my grandparents never moved away. My love for this valley grew as I spent time here with my grandparents. During my college years, my parents, Richard and Virginia McBride, moved here permanently. I followed them here and transferred to Lewis-Clark State College, which offered a program through BYU-Idaho. After finishing college, I returned to Las Vegas and began teaching, then met and married my husband, Rafael Gomez. A couple of years ago we decided to try life in a small town and move closer to family. It has been an interesting adjustment, such as not hearing the sound of slot machines ringing in Broulim’s, dark starry nights, and enjoying the small precious things in life. We feel very fortunate to be here in Teton Valley not only because of the beauty we are surrounded by but also because of the wonderful people who give this valley its character. We loved Vegas and had great friends, now we feel we have the best of both worlds: a place we can go to visit and then return home to the serenity of this valley.
Q
What is your background in education, and how long did you teach English at Teton Middle School?
A
I have been in education for eight years. I finished my undergrad degree through LewisClark State College, in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Special Education. When I returned to Las Vegas, I began working on my master’s degree in Education Administration and also worked on an endorsement in TESL, which is Teaching English as a Second Language. During that time, I taught fourth and fifth grade.
In 2009, I was hired by Mr. [Steve] Burch as the ESL (English as Second Language) teacher, which also included teaching English and Spanish courses. I learned very quickly that those working in Teton County School District wear many hats. In 2010, Teton Middle School moved to a middle school teaming model and my job description changed to the sixthgrade English teacher. During those two years at the middle school, I grew to love the middle school students and will definitely miss them. At the same time, I’m excited to meet our youngest students in the valley and excited to have them teach me about this precious time in their lives.
Q
What are your educational philosophies regarding student success?
A
As time goes on my philosophy of education grows and matures with each new experience. However, some beliefs will always remain the same. I believe in providing a safe learning environment both physically and mentally. Students do enjoy the opportunity to learn, however through getting to know my students I can better differentiate my instruction to meet the individual learning styles in the classroom. Additionally, I believe that in order for students to succeed they first need to feel that someone cares and they are needed in the community in which they are associated with - when this happens, the impossible becomes possible.
Q
What are your priorities as the new DES principal?
A
With all change comes much transition. My priority is to help continue making this transition as smooth as possible for parents, students, and teachers. Through my own experiences and with the support of the fantastic district administrative staff, I am confident that we can achieve a smooth transition, an effective learning environment, and greatness in educating the DES students.
Q
What strengths do you bring to this position?
A
First and foremost, I am excited to take on the challenge of two such different elements in the school day, as I will be the half-day kindergarten teacher and DES principal. In this day and age, I believe it is strength to enjoy the craft of teaching and watching students reach their full potential. These are strengths that I try to embrace every day in my education experience. This position definitely offers the best of both worlds.
Q
What advice do you have for parents of students just entering school?
A
Have fun! This is an exciting time in these children’s lives- it is their first “job” in society. They will learn how to interact socially, problem solve, and yes, even read and do math. All of these events, which take place in their lives, will be monumental. Remember to be enthusiastic, interested, empathetic, and listen to their day’s experiences. They will feel that you want to be a part of their educational “job” and those relationships will continue to grow stronger through their educational years.

District trains on new information system TVN Staff
Teton School District staff and administrators spent the first week of August training on its new Infinite Campus program. The student information system “will be a big part of what our communication is to parents, which will allow them greater access to their child’s academic information,” said Monte Woolstenhulme, TSD superintendent. Staff from the Blaine, Minn.based technology firm is providing the district with project management, data conversion and training, according to Kim Shroeder, company spokesperson. Infinite Campus will provide hosting and ongoing support of the program, which offers: • Single, centralized database eliminating data uploads from the
elementary, middle and high school buildings. “Data is more accurate and is available to authorized users through a standard Web browser as it is being entered rather than the next day after the upload,” Schroeder said.
• Elimination of duplicate data entry. Once a student is enrolled in the system, data moves with the student until graduation. • Hosting services that include software, hardware and database license management, applying updates and patches and nightly backups to the data center in Minnesota. • Teacher tools including assignments and daily planner, data analysis, online payments and electronic transcripts.

School District lunches now a dime more Ken Levy TVN Staff
The Teton School District board of trustees, meeting federal mandates, decided June 13 to raise school lunch prices by 10 cents a meal per year over the next five years, starting this school year. The mandates come from the National School Lunch Program that require school districts to raise lunch prices by as much as 90 cents a meal, spread out over the next five years. The NSLP subsidizes the free and
reduced-price school lunch program. Reduced-eligible students will continue to pay 40 cents per meal regardless of age. Full-price meals for youngsters not meeting eligibility requirements are due to go up over the next five years by 90 cents for elementary school students, 65 cents for middle school and 40 cents for high school. Full-price lunches are now $1.70 for kindergarten and elementary-age pupils, including upper-elementary school students at the new Rendezvous Upper Elementary School, said Kathy Rowbury, TSD child
nutrition director. Middle school students paying full price will now spend $1.95 while high school students will fork over $2.20 for lunch. Adults will now pay $1.70 for breakfast and $3.10 for lunch. “We do offer Provision 2 Breakfast (which provides free breakfast to all students regardless of eligibility) at all schools in our district,” Rowbury said.
Kids’ diets are low in vitamin D, calcium, potassium and dietary fiber, according to the American Dietetic Association. And over the past decade, children’s eating patterns have been markedly low in vitamins A, C and E. Most moms know that if left to their own devices, children will almost always go for sweet indulgences first. In fact, cookies are the No. 1 snack item eaten by kids today. So, can moms reward kids after a tough day at school with treats they’ll actually want to eat while fueling healthy development? The answer is yes. And it helps to plan ahead. Here are some helpful tips that can have a positive impact on kids’ after-school snack choices.

Stress-free ways to serve nutritious after-school snacks
Make nutritious treats accessible
To help parents with busy after-school schedules, look for convenient snacks that can be easily taken from the cupboard or refrigerator and brought on-the-go. Having snacks at their fingertips helps encourage kids to make better choices. For example, when you come home from the grocery store, use sandwich bags to prepack single servings of things like grapes, cheese, crackers and carrots to make them easy to grab and go in an instant. For a sweet alternative, make your own trail mix using their favorite cereal, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows or peanuts.
(ARA) - After a long day at the chalkboard and on the playground, kids can come home from school hungry and ready for an after-school snack. Studies show that children snack an average of three times a day, but they still aren’t getting adequate levels of vitamins and minerals. The challenge for parents is to find a treat kids will want to eat that’s not filled with empty calories.
Pack in nutrients
foods by pumping up the nutritional value, according to Mike Bloom, vice president of marketing for Suncore Products. For example, his company recently introduced a new line of cookies, WhoNu? Nutrition Rich Cookies, created to look and taste like familiar family favorites, while packing more than 20 essential vitamins and minerals, plus dietary fiber. Create tasty options
Take familiar favorite treats and make them even tastier for kids. For instance, parents can make small changes to beloved treats using simple recipes like a frozen yogurt sandwich. Scoop half a cup of your favorite flavor of low-fat frozen yogurt between two Crispy Chocolate Chip WhoNu? Cookies. Freeze until firm and serve. Timing is everything
Know your children’s schedules. A snack can help ward off hunger, but filling kids up with a heavy, calorie-filled treat can spoil their appetites. Space snacks out appropriately, and look for treats packed with fiber that will keep their stomachs full without ruining dinner. Allow more than one chef in the kitchen
Let kids’ creativity soar using their plate as a canvas. Offering a variety of flavorful treats they’ve helped create fends off boredom.
One key to success is to modify kids’ favorite
