Rachael Horne TV Staff After losing a 1-0 heartbreaker in last year’s state championship game, the Redskins boy’s soccer team is focused on another successful season. The team has shirts that state, “We didn’t come this far, to only come this far.” The Redskins are 3-1 on Coach Dan Romano the season so far with wins over Rigby, Aberdeen and Bonneville. Though smaller in height, Teton is bigger this year in number of players. They’ll have a development squad for players who didn’t make the Varsity, but still practice with the team. “Our squad looks good again,” said head coach Dan Romano. “We’re stating to come together as a team.” Teton lost six players form last years’ team, including top player Oscar Mejia who will have to miss his senior year due to an injury. He’ll stay with the team as the student assistant. The team has four seniors on this year’s squad in Captain Emmanuel Galicia, Victor Espejel, Drew Bakhshay and Jon Hendren. Romano said they have much more of a team mentality this year and are picking up from where they left off last year. Another strength is that they’ll be in shape. “These guys are fit,” said Romano. They’re also wiling to mentally engage, said assistant coach Jim Miller.

Teton High School Redskins boys soccer was finally able to start off the season with a home game against Rigby last Tuesday afternoon. The weeks of practice prior to this week showed in terms of passing and talking to their teammates to keep the communication open on the soccer field.
“They understand why we are doing certain drills and listen off the field,” said Miller, adding that during the preseason they were practicing twice a day for four hours. Romano expects some competition from Sugar, and South Fremont will be fast. He expects his Redskins to be in the top half of the district. “We want to improve on last season,” he said.

Galicia described this year’s team as unified. “We’re not just a team on the field, but off the field,” said sophomore captain Omar Martinez. Romano said he is proud of the program Teton has built in soccer. “We’d love to see people come out and support us and fill the sidelines,” he said. Teton plays at home Thursday at 5 p.m. against Snake River.

Volleyball focuses on winning, fun Rachael Horne TVN Staff Under new head coach Brian Schultz, the Teton volleyball team is focusing on getting better and having fun. The Redskins didn’t have a wining season last year and want to turn that around this year. Schultz said their goal is to have more wins than losses. So far, they’re off to a good start, going 7-6. They lost their first Coach regular season Brian Schultz game to North Fremont in five games, but did well in a tournament on Saturday going 7-5. Senior Lannie Jorgenson said they want to make it to state this year. Senior Metayia Farmer said they are more of a team this year and are more positive on the floor. Schultz said they’d be focusing a lot on passing this year, because when the passing is good, they can run a solid offense. They’ll also work on not having a slow start in games. He said it seems like they wait until they are four or five points down, before they decide to play catch up. “It’s a mental issue,” he said. “We’re good volleyball players.”
The Teton Redskins volleyball team hopes to make it to state this year.
