E. Beesley, who was a noted fiddler in the valley, and Charles Carr, a local carpenter, built a two story building at the corner of Little and Main for a dance hall at this time. As an inducement for him to build on the town site, the land was donated to him. A dance hall operated in the top story and the bottom level was used for business. This is currently the Key Bank building.

Monthly Adventure Mill Creek Distance 10 miles out to Grand Targhee and back to Teton Canyon; shorter rides possible Elevation gain 1,500 feet to the base area at Grand Targhee Time 1-2 hours, depending on your turnaround spot Workout factor 5 Skill factor 4 Fun factor 8—a lot of bang for your buck!
M
ill Creek is a terrific “quick fix” ride on its own, or a fun beginning and end to a day on the Grand Targhee trails. The trail takes you through some beautiful aspen forest intermittently giving you glimpses of the Grand Teton and surrounding mountains. The climb is enough to get you your daily workout, and the downhill is so worthy that folks with long-travel downhill steeds routinely shuttle it. Beginning at the second Teton Canyon parking lot 0.5 miles off Ski Hill Road, head up the signed singletrack that leaves from the northern side of the lot. The first quarter mile of this uphill is the hardest—there are a few challenging rocky sections and it’s a bit of a lungbuster right out of the starting gate. Once you’re through this initial section, however, the climb continues at a slightly mellower grade. After two miles of riding and 800 feet of elevation gain, the Cold Springs Trail heads off to your left. This trail takes you out to Ski Hill Road and can be an excellent way to add mileage to your ride. If you’re continuing on Mill Creek, go straight for another mile until you reach an old gate. This is a great stopping point for a short (under one hour) up-and-down
ride. If you continue on, you’ll be on a steep and loose two-track gravel road shortly after the gate. It climbs 0.9 miles to the top of Lightning Ridge at Grand Targhee Resort, another good turnaround point. To continue to the ski resort’s base area, go up and over the small knob to your west and continue to the next saddle. From here you’ll pick up a new section of singletrack that continues 2.5 miles to the resort base. From there, go out to Rick’s Basin, ride the lifts, or have a beer at the Trap Bar. Just remember you will need to do some climbing up to go back down! Regardless of where you turn around on this ride, you’ll have a blast on your way down. There are really very few obstacles (maybe a few cows), and the trail gets ridden frequently enough that it is typically quite buff. Watch out for and yield to uphill riders, hikers, and horses, and enjoy yourself! Access: From the traffic light in Driggs, head seven miles east on Ski Hill Road. Not long after passing through Alta, Wyo., you’ll see a sign marked “Teton Canyon” on your right; take this turn and drive 0.5 miles to the “winter parking lot” which has a kiosk and creek access. Park here.
