Some of the many great attractions you’ll find on your visit here: fly fishing, hiking, mountain biking, skiing, camping, art walks, music and of course, amazing local food. With award winning golf courses and a backdrop so breathtaking you’ll be gasping for air, you’ll realize why so many people return year after year. As a local resident, I welcome you to our community and invite you to discover the many great things Teton Valley has to offer. Sincerely, Scott Anderson

Building in which I first served as Postmaster (1935), Driggs some five years. Then moved in 1941 to Hotel Building—there 10 years (1941-1951) when I moved into my own building. Retired in 1964. —Sara Huff
An excerpt from the September 28, 1911 Teton Valley News stated that there were a total of 21 students enrolled at the Driggs High School.
Grandmother Louisa Kirk and mother riding with the mail carrier out of Driggs to St. Anthony on “The Stage.” The baby in mother’s arms was Junius. The trip was March 1, 1909 shortly before the birth of Virginia. The iron horse comes to Driggs. Don Driggs drives the last spike. By the 1920’s, Victor was the busiest passenger entry-point from the west into Jackson, Wyo. and Grand Teton National Park. Victor was also the principal livestock shipping point for western Wyoming and southeast Idaho. Freight service continued until 1981. • E. Beesley, who was a noted fiddler in the valley, and Charles Carr, a local carpenter, built a two story building at the corner of Little and Main for a dance hall at this time. As an inducement for him to build on the town site, the land was donated to him. A dance hall operated in the top story and the bottom level was used for business. This is currently the Key Bank building. • The original Teton Valley Hospital, sponsored by the City of Driggs and built with Works Progress Administration funds, was dedicated on May 9, 1939. • Dr. O. D. Hoffman, the first physician at the hospital, explained that before the hospital opened house calls were made in a covered sleigh with a stove inside. • In Aug 1, 1882, a group of original settlers of Teton Valley arrived that were clouded in mys-

tery. These people were Robert Benbrook, his unnamed 15-year-old wife and Sam Hill and his 16-year-old wife, Christie and a companion Chris Sorenson. There was no evidence of any weddings that happened between these couples so the woman are referred to today as ‘stolen wives’ because allegedly, they were stolen from the Bear Lake Valley area. They stayed in Teton for their honeymoons and as hideaways from a posse that were chasing Benbrook and Hill from Eagle Rock. The posse eventually lost track of them and it is reported that Robert and his wife had over a dozen children. These facts were found at http://www.communityalmanac.org/ media/view/pdf/639/Driggs%20Historical%20Story.pdf

Rick’s Basin is the cross-country ski area at Grand Targhee Resort. In the summer, it houses a series of nested mountain biking loops which make for some fun and straightforward intermediate riding or a great addition to the Mill Creek ride. The wildflowers are gorgeous, the views of Grand Teton National Park are awe-inspiring, and despite the alpine elevation of the rides, they aren’t that hard. From the upper parking lot, walk your bike up the stairs to the base area. From the patio, look down and to your left and you’ll see the base of the Shoshone (beginners’) lift—head down there and get on the cattrack that runs behind it. Another dirt road will head left and down; keep riding up. A switchback will head off to your right and back towards the base; keep riding up. In about a half mile, you will get up to the bench where the Rick’s Basin area begins. From this point, you have a lot of options. There are two nested Rick’s
Basin Loops, and one larger Quakie Ridge Loop. They can be ridden in any direction, and the three can be combined in any number of ways to make a longer ride. I’d recommend just exploring out there. It won’t be too scary—there are signs all over the place. Make sure you know where the base area is at any time, and when you decide you want to call it a ride, head back to the base area on the nearest trail. There are a number of races that happen in this area in the summer, so there is a good chance that you will see race course signs which you can follow for an established loop. Access: To get to Grand Targhee Resort, head east at the light in Driggs and drive 12 mi. up Ski Hill Road to the resort parking lot. Targhee regularly works on and changes their trails, so you might want to stop into the activities center at the ski hill base to pick up the most recent map, or get up-to-date information on trail conditions.
