seascapes hiroshi sugimoto

Water and air. These primordial substances, which make possible all life on earth, are the subject of Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Seascapes series. For over thirty years, Sugimoto has traveled the world photographing its seas, producing a body of work that is an extended meditation on the passage of time and the natural history of the earth. Sugimoto has called photography the “fossilization of time,” and the Seascapes photographs simultaneously capture a discrete moment in time but also evoke a feeling of timelessness. This volume, the second in a series of books on Sugimoto’s art, presents the complete series of over 200 Seascapes, some of which have never before been reproduced. All are identical in format, with the horizon line precisely bifurcating each image, though at times the sea and sky almost merge into one seamless unit. Each photograph captures a moment when the sea is placid, almost flat. Within this strict format, however, he has created a limitless array of portraits of his subjects. An essay by Munesuke Mita, Professor of Sociology at the University of Tokyo, examines contemporary art through a sociological lens, comparing the recent history of art with mathematical predictions of population growth. He connects Sugimoto’s body of work to this unique analysis of the art world. ]

the long never hiroshi sugimoto

The Long Never is a unique special edition book containing sixty-five artworks by Hiroshi Sugimoto. Composed of photographs from five series—Meteorites, Dioramas, Pre Photographic Time Recording Devices, Lightning Fields, and Seascapes—the sequence of images in this book conjures a natural history of the planet, perhaps even one untouched by humans. The black-andwhite photographs are hand-tipped onto the pages of the book, which is wrapped in silk cloth. Celebrated author Jonathan Safran Foer has written an original story for this book. Foer’s text sits on the page underneath each artwork, so the reader must lift up each photograph in order to read the story. The Long Never is limited to an edition of three hundred and sixty copies. It is housed in a custom-made brushed aluminum slipcase. Each book contains a colophon with the number of the edition signed by Sugimoto. Born in Tokyo in 1948, Sugimoto left Japan in 1970 after graduating from Rikkyo University with a degree in economics. He traveled throughout the Soviet Union and Europe and then moved to Los Angeles, where he studied photography at the Art Center College of Design. His work has been exhibited internationally in group and solo shows, and he was the recipient of the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography in 2001 and the Mainichi Art Prize in 1988. He currently lives in New York and Tokyo. ]

colors. a book about a magazine about the rest of the world

The book COLORS aims to explore the best of visual and textual material of the 90 issues of the magazine, created by the photographer Oliviero Toscani and the art director Tibor Kalman in 1991. The content is presented transversely through a subdivision in ten macro-themes which highlight the “Tumblr ante litteram” nature of the magazine. Twenty-five years of images and texts are shaken and served using ingredients from different issues. The idea is to tell the story of COLORS by using its own words, in a visionary journey through time, between irony and semiotics, rereading the analysis of the world carried out by the magazine, acknowledging its high research value. In this book: • BANG! | weapons, violence, lust, shock • I WANT TO BELIEVE | everything relating to Sunday, faith, cults, national sport, what we worship • PLACES | places, countries, cities, and the rooms where things happen • THAT’S AMORE | heart, physical love, the good despite everything • DRINKING BUDDIES | portraits of people with stories to tell, human cases, superheroes • ELVIS | fame, excess, degeneration, disguise, kitsch • WHERE THE HELL IS MY TAIL? | the animal world, with hair, tails and everything else, missing links included • COLORS IS THE NEW BLACK | the essence of COLORS through the use of colors, all the colors of its themes • FUTURE IS TEN MINUTES AWAY | the future, predictions about the future and how we get ready for it • A tribute to COLORS # 13 ends the volume: it is the issue where Tibor Kalman narrated without the use of words. ]

peter schlesinger

The photographs of artist Peter Schlesinger are a visual diary of an extraordinary life that intersected with some of the brightest names in the worlds of art, fashion, and society. Schlesinger’s remarkable journey began in 1966 when as an 18 year old student at UCLA he met the artist David Hockney. The two moved to London, where Schlesinger was introduced to the city's fashionable bohemian society. There, as well as on trips, Schlesinger met and photographed some of the great personalities of the day, including Cecil Beaton, Paloma Picasso, Grace Coddington, Tina Chow, Christopher Isherwood, and Manolo Blahnik – to name just a few. This beautifully produced book presents an overview of 30 years of photographic work from Schlesinger’s archives. In addition to intimate portraits, the book includes Schlesinger’s evocative still lives, which convey the romance, humor, and elegance of their time. This is the first monograph to present the full range of Schlesinger’s photographic work. Peter Schlesinger was born and raised in California. His sculptures and paintings have been exhibited widely and are in the collections of the Parrish Art Museum, The Farnsworth Museum, and Manchester Gallery of Art, England. He currently resides in New York City with his partner, the photographer Eric Boman. ]

lipstick flavor. a contemporary art story with photography edited by jérôme sans and marla hamburg kennedy Lipstick Flavor, edited by Jérôme Sans and Marla Hamburg Kennedy draws a Lipstick panorama within the world of contemporary art photography. Fully illustrated, it is conceived as a magazine or a rhapsody without any beginning or end. The pages unfurl a new history of the relationship between contemporary art and lipstick: a story that shows how this feminine symbol with particular flavor has pervaded our culture and its imagery. Bringing together more than 40 international artists and their work, from Andy Warhol’s self-portrait to intimate pictures of Araki and Nan Goldin, collapsed compositions of Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, the book tells a new vibrant and visual tale. Sublimed, made-up, eroticized, parodied, fetishized, … these traces of contemporary cult accoutrement have become an iconic element of contemporary values. A sexy book to be kissed. Author proceeds from this book will be donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) ]

============= Philippe Halsman Philippe Halsman's Jump Book 22 x 28 cm 8,66 x 11 inches Pgs. 96 ill. 194 Hardback with jacket English Release date Fall 2015 Rights world Usd 45.00 Gbp 30.00 Eur 40.00 ISBN > 978-88-6208-420-8 18 [ new titles ]

Damiani takes great pleasure in re-publishing this classic photo book from 1959 in a beautifully printed facsimile edition. With nearly 200 photographs of Halsman’s famous subjects in midair, these uniquely witty and energetic images of airborne movie stars, politicians, royalty, artists, and authors have become an important part of Halsman’s photographic legacy. For six years in the mid-1950s, he ended his portrait sessions by asking his sitters to jump. Grace Kelly hikes her skirt with surprising moxie. Marilyn Monroe, Edward Steichen, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Oppenheimer, John Steinbeck, Weegee, Aldous Huxley, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Brigitte Bardot, and Groucho Marx all take the leap of faith – ensuring that we see something about them that we hadn’t quite seen before. It is a tribute to Halsman’s powers of persuasion that Richard Nixon, the Duke & Duchess of Windsor, Judge Learned Hand (in his mid-80s at the time) and other figures not known for their spontaneity could be talked into rising to the challenge. He called the resulting pictures his hobby. And in Philippe Halsman’s Jump Book, he tells us, with mock-academic wit, that the photos are studies in the new science of Jumpology. The jumps took place wherever the rest of the shoot had been located: in the studio, outside or inside, at the subject’s home or workplace. “When you ask a person to jump,” Halsman wrote, “his attention is mostly directed toward the act of jumping, and the mask falls, so that the real person appears.” As Roberta Smith, chief art critic of the New York Times, wrote in her review of the 2010 Halsman/ Jump exhibit in New York: “There is a sublime silliness to Halsman’s images that can make you laugh regardless of how often you see them. They offer incontrovertible proof of Schiller’s claim that ‘all art is dedicated to joy.’ Evidently the simple act of getting off the ground requires giving in to something like joy. You have to let go.” It is not coincidental that Halsman devised Jumpology in the era of Action Painting, which sowed the seeds that would soon grow into performance art. Roberta Smith continues: “Halsman pushed his own form, the studio portrait, to extremes, exaggerating its basic components in ways that make us more aware of them: the trust that must exist between photographer and subject; the split-second ‘performance’ that any still camera captures; the uncontrollable revelations of character; the way we all try to rise, as it were, to the occasion of a photograph.” ]

In this latest book by the acclaimed photographer of Detroit Disassembled, Andrew Moore takes to the air to create an intimate vision of the High Plains. The “Meridian” of the title refers to the 100th meridian, the longitude that neatly bisects the country and has long been considered the dividing line between the fertile green East and dry brown West of the United States. Much of the meridian traverses America’s “flyover country”, those remote and sparsely populated landscapes with a long history of repeated drought and failed dreams. Yet other parts of the meridian overlap bustling and contentious zones such as the heavily fracked Bakken formation in North Dakota. Dirt Meridian interweaves both these stories together: the enduring myths and rich history of a place where so little meets the eye, alongside a portrayal of those who continue to live amidst its vast and severe magnificence. Many photographs in this book were made using a specially modified camera in a low flying plane; the resulting pictures, with their literal bird eye’s view, offer the viewer a unique perspective of this quintessential “American” landscape of no conspicuous markers or limits. Moore was also assisted by a wideranging group of ranchers, farmers, crop dusters, game wardens, writers, and historians during his ten years of work on this project. The book includes a preface by the late noted author Kent Haruf, a story by the writer Inara Verzemnieks, an essay by noted curator of Western Art, Toby Jurovics, as well as extensive set of endnotes about the images themselves. ]

silent conversations eric maillet

This monograph presents Eric Maillet's entire body of personal photographic work. Water and nature occupy a very important place in Maillet’s works with water in many forms; snow, ice, and bubbles. His images reduce nature to its simplest element, allowing one to contemplate its unexpected aesthetic. The female body also holds an important place throughout his work and finds its harmony in Maillet’s nature-focused universe. His work has always taken into consideration that an open book or magazine invites the reader to look at two images simultaneously. Maillet chose Silent Conversations, two words meant to reflect the relationship between his images used to create diptychs. Maillet wanted to underline the exchange between the two images and indicate that it is in the middle that things happen. It also seemed interesting to Maillet to play with the contrast and the opposition (as we often see in photography and in art such as the distinction between shadows and light) of “silent” and “conversation”. This seems paradoxical. This causes us to ask ourselves questions. The photos are silent yet they tie together a long personal history, much research, and many conversations. Eric Maillet (born 1957) discovered photography at the end of the 1970s. A completely self-taught photographer, he cultivated a style influenced by the work of Brodovitch and Rodtchenko. In taking inspiration from painting, he quickly realized that the graphic impact, the lines, and the composition were a fundamental base in making an image perfect. He spent many weekends at the Louvre and studied the great masterworks at the Prado Museum in Madrid. Maillet admires the great reportage photography of Henri Cartier Bresson and Willy Ronis, and it is through this perspective that he approaches his still-life work: a reporter exposing and describing what he sees in his everyday life. ]

the city is a novel alexey titarenko

Alexey Titarenko: The City Is a Novel is the first major monograph devoted to over 20 years of the artist’s distinguished career (1991 - 2014). The book features more than 120 photographs that comprise a poetic visual narrative focused on four cities: Saint Petersburg, Venice, Havana, and New York. Insightful essays about Titarenko’s work are contributed by Gabriel Bauret, photography historian, critic, and curator, Paris based; Brett Abbott, Curator of Photography, High Museum of Art, Atlanta; and Sean Corcoran, Curator of Prints and Photographs, Museum of the City of New York. Born in Leningrad, Russia, in 1962, Titarenko has lived and worked in New York since 2008. In an autobiographical essay, he unfolds the formation of his artistic vision and his creation of a unique style. Famous for introducing long exposure and intentional camera movement into street photography, Titarenko created powerful metaphors to document the century’s historic changes. His haunting, ghostlike images have become icons of the era of the collapse of the Soviet state. ]

les danseurs matthew brookes

Matthew Brookes’s style of photography leans toward the natural raw emotion of his subjects. In his first book Brookes has turned his lens towards the professional male ballet dancers of Paris. For a year in the life of these dancers he took them out of their regular environment of rehearsals and performances and photographed them in a raw space where they were allowed to explore the physicality of dance in its purest form. This series of portraits depicts the pure physicality of a male dancer where they are asked to interperate birds falling from the sky. The introduction to this series of images is by Parisian prima ballerina Marie Agnus Gillot, who has worked with these dancers over the years and watched them grow and develop both as dancers and as people. Matthew Brookes was born in England, grew up in South Africa and currently resides and works between Paris and New York. His speciality is fashion photography and portraiture and his clients include Armani, Cartier, YSL Beauty, Burberry, Berluti, David Yurman, Tommy Hilfiger, Zegna. His editorial clients include British Vogue, Vanity Fair, American Vogue, Interview Magazine, Numero, GQ, Details, Numero Homme, Vogue Hommes International and the New York Times Magazine. ]

toiletpaper 12 maurizio cattelan | pierpaolo ferrari

Toiletpaper is an artists’ magazine created and produced by Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, born out of a passion or obsession they both cultivate: images. The magazine contains no text; each picture springs from an idea, often simple, and through a complex orchestration of people it becomes the materialization of the artists’ mental outbursts. Since the first issue, in June 2010, Toiletpaper has created a world that displays ambiguous narratives and a troubling imagination. It combines the vernacular of commercial photography with twisted narrative tableaux and surrealistic imagery. The result is a publication that is itself a work of art which, through its accessible form as a magazine, and through its wide distribution, challenges the limits of the contemporary art economy. ]

kenzine vol. 4 toiletpaper + kenzo

Kenzine is a collaboration between Toiletpaper magazine and Kenzo. Named after Kenzo’s online blog, Kenzine has been published in a limited run of 2.400 numbered copies. Toiletpaper was founded in 2010 by Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari with the art direction of Micol Talso as a picture-based magazine. Photos published in the magazine have been applied to a variety of products and media, exploring multiple possibilities for images to live beyond the page. The Toiletpaper creative team, met with Kenzo and created the advertising campaign for the Fall–Winter 2013, Spring–Summer 2014, Fall–Winter 2014 and now Spring–Summer 2015 season. Since 2011, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim have been the creative directors of Kenzo. Thanks to their new vision, the label has revived the spirit which lies at the origin of its success. Founders of the concept store Opening Ceremony, launched in September 2002 in New York, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim are now at the helm of Kenzo, aiming to inject their original energy into Parisian fashion. Set in a graphic and futuristic universe, the team wanted to convey an optimistic utopia and also to provide an element of surprise in the images. The viewer witness is at once something instantly recognizable and familiar but upon closer reflection records an observation into the unknown. For Leon and Lim "Toiletpaper were an obvious choice to work with on this project. The strength and impact of their work is often in the most subtle visual tricks which become more powerful the longer you are exposed to them.” ]

dark city: urban america at night lynn saville

Dark City is a natural sequel to Lynn Saville’s color photographs in Night/Shift (Monacelli, 2009). Her work in that book made her, in the words of art critic and philosopher Arthur C. Danto, “the Atget of vanishing New York, prowling her city at the other end of the day, picking up pieces of the past in the present, just before it is swallowed in shadows.” This book is a further exploration of the urban landscape at dusk and dawn, with a new focus on the effects of the recent economic turmoil on New York and other American cities. Shuttered stores and empty lots in city centers and fringe areas alike reveal a haunting and disquieting beauty. Occasionally, a person or the artist herself is visible as a ghosted image or shadow. Photographs in Dark City also counterbalance signs of loss with a more optimistic message. They reveal a natural cycle of decay and rebirth in urban ecology, as objects such as ladders and brooms signal that the work of renewal is under way. Dark City is ultimately a dynamic and ongoing dialogue between defined place and empty space that will fascinate general readers and urban specialists alike. ]

lunchtime charles h. traub

Charles H. Traub’s colorful and spontaneous street portraits were made between 1977 and 1980 on the streets of Chicago, New York, and various European cities. They are direct, intimate and joyous; never exploitive. These remarkable photographs celebrate the whimsy of individuals Traub approached. The photographs place the viewer in a moment of fleeting mutuality between Traub and his subject. Lively pairings drive us from one set of quirks to the next, as we associate one individual with another in a new narrative of the street. This book is the first comprehensive publication of these images, which were exhibited in the early 80s at the Frumkin Gallery, Chicago; The Hudson River Museum, New York; and Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Milan. His previous book Dolce Via: Italy in the 1980s (2013) sold out worldwide only months after its release. “The photographer Charles H. Traub is an American Martin Parr – his beautifully honest, everyday pictures in Dolce Via: Italy in the 1980s evoke a world of long, hot summers and fearless bikini-wearing.” – The Sunday Telegraph ]

segmented realities josé parlá

Segmented Realities presents a group of five paintings and ten sculptural paintings by José Parlá suggesting cultural fragments salvaged from urban sites that have experienced social and cultural upheaval and transformation. As do segments of walls in Havana, New York, London, or the Berlin wall, Parlá’s sculptures bear witness to waves of history that seem to be inscribed on their surfaces, told in an expressive and poetic language of the city. These works act as palimpsests, surfaces bearing layers of marks, on which ensuing generations might imagine their own manifestos and declarations of selfhood. José Parlá (born 1973) has received critical acclaim for his works, which lie at the boundary between abstraction and calligraphy. Composed from layers of paint, gestural drawing and found ephemera, his work evokes the histories of urban environments. Parlá is a documentarian of city life. In Medias Res, Parlá’s second solo exhibition with Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York City opened in Chelsea in 2014. In 2012, the 11th Havana Biennial selected The Wrinkles of the City: Havana, Cuba project, a vertically integrated collaboration between Parlá and French artist JR, and exhibited in 2013 at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery. Parlá and JR co-directed a documentary by the same title that was awarded the Grand Prize for Documentary Short and Best U.S. Premiere Documentary Short in 2013 at The Heartland Film Festival, Indianapolis. In 2014, Parlá was commissioned to create a 90-footlong mural painting for the entrance of One World Trade Center, which he has entitled: ONE: Union of the Senses. ]

southern rites gillian laub

Southern Rites is an original and provocative twelve-year visual study of one community’s struggle to confront longstanding issues of race and equality. In May 2009, the New York Times Magazine published a photo-essay by Gillian Laub entitled, “A Prom Divided,” which documented Georgia’s Montgomery County High School’s racially segregated homecoming and prom rituals. Laub’s photographs ignited a firestorm of national outrage and led the community to finally integrate. One year later, there was newfound hope—a historic campaign to elect the county’s first African American sheriff, yet the murder of a young black man—portrayed in Laub’s earlier prom series—by a white town patriarch, reopened old wounds. Through her intimate portraits and first-hand testimony, Laub reveals in vivid color the horror and humanity of these complex, intertwined narratives. The photographer’s inimitable sensibility—it is the essence and emotional truth of the singular person in front of her lens that matters most—ensures that, however elevated the ideas and themes may be, her pictures remain studies of individuals; a chronicle of their courage in the face of injustice, of their suffering and redemption, possessing an unsettling power. Gillian Laub is a recipient of the Aaron Siskind Fellowship and Jerome Foundation Grant. She is represented by Benrubi Gallery and contributes to many publications such as TIME Magazine and the New York Times Magazine. Southern Rites is also Laub’s first feature documentary film airing on HBO in May 2015. ]

haas brothers volume II: afreaks

The second book in a series by the designers the Haas Brothers focuses on a new body of work comprised of fantastical handbeaded and bronze animal sculptures which they call Afreaks. The Afreaks were produced in South Africa in close collaboration with a group of traditional bead artists in a segregated township outside of Cape Town called Khayelitsha. The Afreaks, like all freaks, stand out for their nonconformism and, like all freaks, represent uninhibited expression of individuality. The book not only documents these sculptures, but also the emotional and life-changing journey to create them with a close knit group of women who came to dub themselves the Haas Sisters. The works, essays and images presented in the Haas Brothers Volume II: Afreaks is the story of their journey and this extraordinary relationship. ]

epic systems jennifer bartlett

Over the course of a forty-year career, Jennifer Bartlett has tiressly explored the possibilities of painting, her primary format for artistic expression. Bartlett is well-known for her systematic approach to creating paintings, often relying on a grid structure as the underpinning of a work. Epic Systems presents her three most ambitious, large-scale works in one volume: Rhapsody, Song, and Recitative. All three are composed of hundreds of individual paintings she made on square steel plates coated in baked enamel and overlaid with a grid pattern. First shown at the Paula Cooper Gallery in 1976, the monumental Rhapsody is Bartlett’s career-defining work. Composed of 998 individual paintings, it was described by art critic Roberta Smith as “the story of the mind in action.” In Song, Bartlett employs an austere palette of black and beige dots to reveal a myriad of compositional arrangements. Her most recent large-scale work, Recitative, is an epic exploration of color that references Minimalism and the rule-based system of Conceptual art. Bartlett is one of the most significant painters of the last half-century, and Epic Systems is the only book that brings together these three important works. ]

knowledge of the raw david seltzer

Knowledge of the Raw is a selection of photographs that Seltzer has taken over the course of his life in an almost diary-like style. Often graphic and personal, Seltzer’s work is more stream of consciousness than documentary. Years may pass before an image is finished. With the passage of time comes a fresher, and frequently more complicated perspective of what the initial “shot” may have brought to mind. An image that may have lain dormant for years is triggered back to life by a passing memory, dream, sound, smell, or perhaps the patter of rain falling on a city street. Once the image is again brought to the top of the “active” pile, it is reworked in order to incorporate its newly found perspective. This reworking consists of scratching, writing, etching the negative itself, or using a variety of media applied to the print; hand applied toners, paint, ink, etc..

In his foreword for this book, Eric Fischl concludes: “As promised in his title Knowledge of the Raw, Seltzer does not soften the blows. One feels the full weight of the dramas in his life, grasping, catching, holding on and then, sadly, the loosening grip. The effect of this slippage is heartbreak. These powerful works are the result of a protracted conversation he has been having with himself about women, about God, about the bending and breaking of the soul, about the loneliness and isolation of aging , and about weather.” Miles Barth, the founding curator at The International Center for Photography, refers to Seltzer’s modus operandi: “Seltzer holds the camera to his own life the way someone attempting suicide might point a gun to his head…. Seltzer is not afraid to expose a raw nerve. The situations in his photographs dwell on emotions not often recorded and memories not often retained. They are part documentary, part the author’s not so subtle commentary.” From the exhibition catalog, Slipping Man, John Fergus Jean expands on Seltzer’s work: “Seltzer’s images are like peripheral visions from the high wire. They tell of gravity- the constant attraction of bodies in space, spontaneous confrontations in his life, equilibrium, and surviving. In this respect, as in electricity, the difference between polarities determines potential energy; and in Seltzer’s work the psychic distance between slipping and desolation is enormous.” ]

egos fischerspooner

Fischerspooner’s new project, Egos, is a study on the morphology of characters, relationships, narratives, and spaces. In this artistic experiment, two things remain constant: the physical space—Casey Spooner’s apartment—and the cast—the artists and their latest collaborators. Yet the photographs featured in Egos result from many different photographer’s approaches to this same material, resulting in wildly divergent but uncannily similar images. The dynamic mix of photographs may feature the same space and the same people, yet the tenors of the scenes drastically change in their exploration of intimacy, the erotic, homosexuality, and the threshold between private and public. The book, like dream-work, is layered with displacement, desire, and disguise. Egos not only manifests in book form, but also in the music of their forthcoming album. Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner met at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and formed Fischerspooner in New York City in 1998. As an art pop performance project, Fischerspooner’s practice involves music, dance, fashion, film and photography. They have released three full-length music albums, #1 (2001), Odyssey (2005) and Entertainment (2009). ]

magnum photos with reda

Lavishly pictorial and poignantly descriptive, Magnum Photos with Reda is the story, told in striking pictures, of how raw wool coming from the other end of the world reaches Italy to turn into the finest fabric. Conceived on the occasion of wool mill Lanificio Reda’s 150th anniversary, developed in tandem with Magnum Photos and curated by Angelo Flaccavento, the volume enlists the deeply captivating visions of some of the best contemporary lensmen. Olivia Arthur, Paolo Pellegrin, Gueorgui Pinkhassov, Mark Power and Alex Majoli landed their gaze on Reda, focusing on the many aspects that create a story of true Italian excellence. From the otherworldly landscapes of Australia and New Zealand to the state of the art technology of the Reda factories of Northern Italy, from the business strategies to the human factor that is the secret ingredient of the whole story, 150 draws a singular visual path relying on the narrative magnetism of powerful image-making. ludovic cesari

The photographs of Ludovic Cesari (born 1984), who lives and works in Paris, can be regarded from the prism of their singularity but also from that of their interdependence. At the core of his displays (diptychs, triptychs, and polyptychs), he brings into play narrative continuities and discontinuities, echoes and contrasts of form that emerge from these relationships. This book, the first he has published with Damiani, was designed as a grid of connections between shapes, textures, and photographs, between one page and another, and provides an experience akin to memories. Full of sensations, his representations of the body, always faceless, often fragmentary in nature, replace recognition with a form of tactility that has a hint of eroticism. Forms emerge from his sublime, out-of-focus landscapes and draw the eye into a fluctuation between what it perceives and what it senses. Far from treating his body photography and his landscapes, both natural and urban, as two separate genres, Cesari conveys a sense of unity between the visible elements, where the textures of skin, stones, emotions and photographic paper come together to create a single evocative force. ]

this time yana toyber

This Time is a photographic exploration and commentary on the human idea of time and it’s connection with nature. The project was shot by Yana Toyber is photographed on impossible project film, instant film that is modern day Polaroid film. Shot on Polaroid camera models 600 and SX-70 each image conveys emotion by the subjects and their surroundings. The images are portraits, environmental landscapes, nudes, and nostalgic still life moments captured in an instant by the artist. The color of each image in nature is affected by the temperature of the surroundings. Blue hues are usually taken in cold weather, pink, gold, and orange hues in warm weather temperatures, although there are some exceptions. The project has taken about three years to complete and has documented the stillness as well as movement and change of seasons and life cycles. The surreal appearance of images is a statement by the artist of how time is nonlinear and how moments in time are never replicated even though there is a sense of repetition. ]

Growing up in the 1950s, Tom Bianchi would head into downtown Chicago and pick up 25-cent “physique” magazines at newsstands. In one such magazine, he found a photograph of bodybuilder Glenn Bishop on Fire Island. “Fire Island sounded exotic, perhaps a name made up by the photographer,” he recalls in the preface to his latest monograph. “I had no idea it was a real place. Certainly, I had no idea then that it was a place I would one day call home.” In 1970, fresh out of law school, Bianchi began traveling to New York, and was invited to spend a weekend at Fire Island Pines, where he encountered a community of gay men. Using an SX-70 Polaroid camera, Bianchi documented his friends’ lives in the Pines, amassing an image archive of people, parties and private moments. These images, published here for the first time, and accompanied by Bianchi’s moving memoir of the era, record the birth and development of a new culture. Soaked in sun, sex, camaraderie and reverie, Fire Island Pines conjures a magical bygone era.

Since the first issue, in June 2010, TOILETPAPER has created a world that displays ambiguous narratives and a troubling imagination. It combines the vernacular of commercial photography with twisted narrative tableaux and surrealistic imagery. The result is a publication that is itself a work of art, which, through its accessible form as a magazine, and through its wide distribution, challenges the limits of the contemporary art economy.

stephen sprouse: xerox/rock/art an archive of drawings and ephemera 1970s -1980s Comprised of 1,500 separate pieces, including 600 original drawings, color Xeroxes, swatch references and inspiration materials, Stephen Sprouse: Xerox/Rock/Art. An Archive of Drawings and Ephemera 1970s-1980s encompasses the design work of Sprouse (1953–2004) from 1974 through the late 1980s, focusing the foundational period in which the designer effortlessly fused New York uptown glamour with the edgy vibe of the East Village. The works on paper included here reveal Sprouse’s unmistakable energy: his facile and powerful inked lines, his use of the Xerox machine to apply vivid gouache color and his often capitalized marginalia all reveal the vibrant, unstoppable personality of a design genius. Also evident here is the powerful influence of two of Sprouse’s most important muses, Jackie Onassis and Debbie Harry of Blondie, the latter of whom wore the off-the shoulder short dress in 1978 that served as Sprouse’s public debut (Harry also provides the introduction to this volume). Even in these two figures, the uptown/ downtown, high-end/punk tensions that pervade Sprouse’s work is apparent. Though recognized even at the tender age of 14 as a design prodigy, Sprouse’s commercial success alternately soared and stalled throughout the 1980s, but his assuredness of vision and unique concepts have made legendary contributions to the world of fashion. The intimacy of the sketches and designs collected here give the viewer a rare opportunity to draw closer to Stephen Sprouse and his frenetic career. Stephen Sprouse (1953–2004) launched his first collections in the early 1980s, at exclusive outlets such as Bergdorf Goodman, and to immediate critical acclaim. In the late 80s, Sprouse opened stores on Wooster St in New York and at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles. He died of lung cancer at the age of 50. ]

the ghosts of ellis island a project by jr with drawings by art spiegelman A project by JR with drawings by Art Spiegelman The Ghosts of Ellis Island 21,7 x 27 cm 8,5 x 10,6 inches Pgs. 120 ill. 90 Hardback English Rights world Usd 39.95 Gbp 25.00 Eur 29.00 ISBN > 978-88-6208-395-9

The Unframed Ellis Island project is about bringing alive the memory of Ellis Island, the entry point to America for millions of immigrants. Coming from all over the world, leaving their belongings, their family and their past behind them, with the fear that they may be sent back to it, the presence of these people who have shaped the modern American identity can still be felt in the buildings, although abandoned for the past 70 years. This is the opportunity to interpret the stories of these people through art.

Unframed is an ongoing project by JR, who uses images by famous or anonymous photographers and archival images. JR interprets them and takes them out of their context depending on the place, neighborhood or city he works in. In August 2014, JR was invited to work on the abandoned part of Ellis Island. This island, next to the Statue of Liberty, is very symbolic - the gateway to the United States for 12 million immigrants, from 1892 to 1954. On the south side of the island, the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital has been abandoned since 1954. JR revisited the archives of Ellis Island and created many installations in these buildings so full in stories. Art Spiegelman, the famous author of the graphic novel Maus, immigrated to the United States in 1951. He collaborates with JR on this book, illustrating on photographs, visiting notable stories of immigrants that came through Ellis Island. ]

the wrinkles of the city: havana cuba jr & josé parlá In May 2012, JR collaborates with American artist José Parlá on the latest iteration of The Wrinkles of the City: a huge mural installation in Havana, undertaken for the Havana Biennale, for which JR and Parlá photographed and recorded 25 senior citizens who had lived through the Cuban revolution, creating portraits which Parlá, who is of Cuban descent, interlaced with palimpsestic calligraphic writings and paintings. Parlá’s markings echo the distressed surfaces of the walls he inscribes, and offer commentary on the lives of Cuba’s elders; together, JR and Parlá’s murals marvelously animate a city whose walls are otherwise adorned only by images of its leaders. ]

the portrait machine project carlo van de roer In The Portrait Machine Project, Brooklyn-based New Zealand photographer Carlo Van de Roer (born 1975) explores the idea that a camera can reveal otherwise hidden facets of a subject’s character, and their relationship with the photographer and viewer. Van de Roer uses a Polaroid aura camera, developed in the 1970s in an attempt to record what a psychic might see. His subjects--friends, family, artists Miranda July, Terence Koh and Aurel Schmidt, author James Frey--are connected by sensors to the camera, which translates biofeedback into information about their characters and how they are viewed. The camera depicts this information as color in the Polaroid and as a printed description and diagram. In this, his first book, Van de Roer prompts us to question what we expect from a portrait, particularly when it’s of someone we think we know. ] ============= Carlo Van de Roer The Portrait Machine Project 24,5 x 30.5 cm 9.75 x 12 inches Pgs. 88 ill. 40 Hardback English Release date Spring 2013 Rights world Usd 40.00 Gbp 25.00 Eur 30.00 ISBN > 978-88-6208-268-6

Captain Rugged is a multimedia project collaboration between 2 Nigerian artists: Keziah Jones and Native Maqari. The book is a graphic novel and comes out with a special music card that contains the url to download the tracks of Keziah Jones’ CD album of the same name. The two artists have witnessed the most transformative stories happening within and around them in the city of Lagos so it was inevitable that they both attempted to put this into words and image and sound for an outside audience in order that they might also get an idea of the character of the city. ]

The book is the first monograph on Chaz Bojorquez, best known as "Chaz", the Los Angeles artist who traced his own style following the Cholo Graffiti tradition. During the late 60's he started drawing and writing in the street of Los Angeles creating one of the first example of evolved graffiti/ street-art in the US, some years before they started to invade the New York City streets. From the 70's he has developed a world unique style of illustration and calligraphy has marked a generation of visual artists, calligraphers and tattoists. A book which goes through his life and work presenting unrealesed photos and artworks." By the end of 1969, Bojorquez had created a symbol that represented him and the streets-a stylized skull called Se単or Suerte (Mr. Luck). It has become a gangster image of protection from death. Bojorquez quit what he calls "tagging" in 1986. Three of his paintings are now in the permanent collection of the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C. Four others are owned by the Orange County Museum of Art. Bojorquez is considered one of the few artists who have successfully made the transition from the street to the gallery. ]

In a meteoric rise to fame, the Los Angeles–based Haas Brothers have garnered international accolades for their set design and props for print and video, one-of-a-kind fashion works and their highly original furniture and object designs. Their exploration and mastery of materials—ranging from brass, bronze, porcelain and fur to highly technical resins and polyurethane—matched with their insatiable curiosity and remarkable visual intelligence, sets them apart as designers. This monograph—the first on the brothers— focuses on their projects, including their Hex series of handworked bronze tile pieces, their Accretion series of unique ceramic vessels, the Beast series of bronze and wool anthropomorphic furniture and a new body of works that engages ideas about arousal and eroticism in playful, sculptural forms. The book features color photographs as well as writings and drawings by Simon and Nikolai Haas that convey their humor and eloquence while illuminating the inspirations, theories and processes behind the works, plus images of the Haas Brothers’ studio and practice. ]

sacred icons," says the artist, "I reinvent and reinforce them." Serrano's subjects for this series are selected from among his friends and acquaintances, emphasizing (like Caravaggio before him) the ordinariness of human features. Fire Island Pines Polaroids 1975-1983 Collectors limited edition of 67 numbered copies comes in a special orange cloth slipcase with a tipped-in cover image, and contains a fine art giclée print signed and numbered by Tom Bianchi. Growing up in the 1950s, Tom Bianchi would head into downtown Chicago and pick up 25-cent “physique” magazines at newsstands. In one such magazine, he found a photograph of bodybuilder Glenn Bishop on Fire Island. “Fire Island sounded exotic, perhaps a name made up by the photographer,” he recalls in the preface. “I had no idea it was a real place. Certainly, I had no idea then that it was

a place I would one day call home.” In 1970, fresh out of law school, Bianchi began traveling to New York, and was invited to spend a weekend at Fire Island Pines, where he encountered a community of gay men. Using an SX-70 Polaroid camera, Bianchi documented his friends’ lives in the Pines, amassing an image archive of people, parties and private moments. These images, published here for the first time, and accompanied by Bianchi’s moving memoir of the era, record the birth and development of a new culture. Soaked in sun, sex, camaraderie and reverie, Fire Island Pines conjures a magical bygone era. collector's edition

Greg Gorman put together a collection of more than 200 portraits of young men, some of whom became famous. An album that reveals the evergreen fascination of youth, when time has yet to obfuscate ingenuousness, melancholic gentleness and, above all, the beauty that characterises life’s âge d’or. The photographer writes in the introduction: “My photographs have often captured the sensuality that goes hand in hand with vulnerability. When the subject has an unawareness of the camera, he reveals an inward truth, that 104 [ backlist

maybe he doesn’t even realize is coming forth in the pictures”. From Tom Cruise to Kevin Costner, from Leonardo di Caprio to Brad Pitt and on to Patrick Dempsey, Charlie Sexton, Rupert Everett, Johnny Depp and many others, In their Youth is a manifesto of the agonising, sensual and “Wildean” promise of beauty. This limited edition comes with a signed archival print photograph of Christopher Atkins (17 x 13 inches), signed by both Atkins and Gorman, and comes housed in a linen cloth box.
