Damian K Sheiles | Portfolio 2020

Page 1

INTR Hello. My name is Damian K Sheiles and this is my portfolio book, a revised edition for 2020. It is not like your typical design portfolio and that is because I am not your typical designer. I am a multi-disciplined artisan with experience in graphic design, corporate design, design for print and screen, signage design and production, illustration, photography as well as video and audio production. From a young age I have been fascinated by the combination of colour, type, layout, form and style. During my formative years, when I was in primary school, I remember being drawn to different font styles on the covers of books, magazines and comics, and upon receiving a Letraset Font catalogue,

2

my eyes were opened to the myriad possibilities that type had to offer. I spent as much time designing the covers to my assignments as writing the contents themselves. I would hand-draw the title text by copying the character styles out of my treasured Letraset book. Secondary school challenged and expanded my understanding of art and design, and I tried my hand at every art and drawing discipline that was placed before me. From pre-computer hand skills of technical drawing and working with wood and metal, to the finer skill of pen and brush work, painting and illustration - I studied it all. A decade would pass between the completion of secondary school and enrolling in a three year Advanced Diploma course in Design and Media at the Central Institute of

RODUCTION Technology, Northbridge (formally WASAD - Western Australian School of Art and Design). Throughout the three year course, I maintained a focus on the importance of colour theory, as well as studying typography, design style, form and function. With a core focus on corporate design; website design; advanced illustration (honing traditional and digital techniques); and design history and culture; I successfully graduated at the end of 2000. Milestones achieved that same year were having my work published in Design Graphics Magazine twice, and being honoured as the “Best Illustration student of my graduating year. Jump forward to 2020 and I now have 19 years experience in the design, marketing, print and sign industries.

Progressing from print shop manager, graphic designer to studio manager, client liaison, creative development manager and freelance designer/illustrator across five different companies. I am a creative, passionate artisan that brings a high level of care and uncanny attention to detail in everything that I do. I trust you will discover this for yourself within these pages. Best wishes, Damian K. Sheiles January 2020

Effective graphic design is a combination of text and imagery that results in clear communication of message, inline with your a brand’s identity, to captivate your audience and in turn, your customers. It sounds easy enough but for best results you require a professionally trained designer with years of experience to get to the core of your brand, with the right visual representation. I am a seasoned designer with many years of industry experience. I specialise in the creative development and marketing of corporate brand identity across a multitude of collateral, including digital and print publications, brochures, marketing campaigns, EDM, signage, websites, social media and promotional products. The development of my unique perspective or ‘designer eye’ is the result of applied training processes and real industry experience. My grounded knowledge of design for print, large format and digital processes ensures that I deliver professional solutions conforming to today’s industry standards and design styles. I have produced a solid body of work over the two decades of my career: from business cards to 24m bulkhead signage, multi-page programs, large format posters, interactive PDF and just about everything else in between. I provide design solutions to ensure that your corporate identity is consistent across a variety of media: stationery, brochures, adverts, social media and your company’s online presence. I can work with your existing brand or create a new identity for your company. Corporate Design Over the years I have worked on a variety of corporate brands including: Alzheimer’s WA, Auto Masters, Highbury Homes, MYgen Homes, Breast Cancer Care WA, Broken Hill Hotel, Docuprint Pty Ltd, HLB Mann Judd, Parkland Mazda, Mansfield Marine, Yoga Alliance International, The Church (band), KeyReturn International, The Marketing Mix, and my own company DKS art & design. For five years, from 2008 to 2013, I managed the design studio at The Marketing Mix in Osborne Park. It was a very involved role with many responsibilities: managing staff, scheduling projects and advertising deadlines, allocating workloads, managing the needs of internal and external clients, and working as their senior graphic designer. I was responsible for the production of all promotional artwork for KeyReturn and Database Loyalty Programs. This included key-tags and custom package art for a variety of companies, Australia wide. Clients ranged from GIO

Insurance, Hamper King and Hog’s Breath Cafe, to the Australian Olympic Team, Nova, PGA of Australia, Brisbane Bandits and Mercedes Benz. In late 2011, The Marketing Mix acquired the Highbury Homes Group as a client. I was appointed to the account and worked closely with their marketing manager to improve and tighten the Highbury Homes brand. This included the new design of display home brochures, press adverts, stationery, signage and a complete website overhaul. MYgen Homes are also a part of the Highbury Homes Group and I was instrumental in developing that brand further, alongside their in-house marketing manager. This enabled a sense of uniformity to be developed across branding for both MYgen Homes and MYgen2, (their twostorey range) and new design styles were developed for their brochures, stationery, signage and websites. I have developed brands from the ground up, worked closely to corporate style guides and given existing brands a refreshed look. I understand the need to maintain brand integrity, ensuring continuity of identity across all collateral and communications. Print Design for print is a discipline that a lot of designers do not fully grasp, due to the process not being covered at length at universities and colleges. I know that having a strong understanding of pre-press set-up is just as important as knowing the fundamentals of colour balance, page layout, font styles and design. For the last two decades, I have worked both for, and along side, printing companies such as Docuprint Pty Ltd, Minuteman Press and Port Printing Works, all located in Perth’s metropolitan area. Having a thorough understanding of pre-press production requirements has made working with print, publishing and manufacturing companies based overseas a smooth and easy process, as well. All this experience has given me an essential tool in my designer’s toolkit - having a fundamental understanding of production processes allows me to set-up design files that work, first time, in real-world production houses, resulting in faster and smoother turnaround times.

BULKHEAD SIGNS

PARKLAND MAZDA

Parkland Mazda’s Massive Bulkhead Signage Project was completed during my time at The Marketing Mix. The final design was informed by referring to Mazda’s corporate imagery and style guide book. Stock photos were selected and purchased from iStock and BigStock online libraries and carefully etched in Photoshop to create the continuous photo montage that runs throughout the interior of Parkland Mazda’s showroom. The process required meticulous work and patience and the excellent, and well-received, end result is a testament to the effort I undertook.

In 2009, I was approached by The Church (band) management to help out with some their design requirements and to assist in preparing artwork for press advertisements for music publications overseas. As a lifelong fan of the band, it was a great opportunity to get a glimpse “behind the curtain” and experience first-hand the fast paced world of marketing in the music industry. Spoiler alert: a lot of people donate their time and skills for free to help support musicians they love. This initial artwork assistance resulted in a nice design collaboration with (now former) Church guitarist, Marty Willson-Piper. Marty and I worked on programs and posters for their 30th Anniversary Acoustic Australian and

It was a lovely way to finish this project and seeing the CD and DVD for sale in a local music store was a big thrill. I still provide ad hoc freelance design services to The Church (band) and will be working on a yet-unannounced project later this year.

Rise Up is an extract from the 2011 version of Coming Down // Rise UP. It’s the additional three minutes extra coda/change at the end of the track which was too self indulgent and cut from the final album release.

All instruments on LP2 are played by Damian K Sheiles - electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitar, keyboards.

Tunnel Pull away from the darkness within Come on get digging You’re in it up to your chin Push your head up Towards the red setting sky When you see it You don’t feel anything at all It lifts you up And takes you back to the wall Come on get up again You’re almost near the end Close your eyes now The heat burns and burns Shield your face now As it turns and turns and turns Can you see How it’s meant to be When the tunnel light shines So beautifully Can you see How it’s meant to be When the tunnel light ignites Amazingly Can you see How it’s meant to be When the tunnel lights up So radiantly Can you see Can you see The tunnel light shines So beautifully

Calm Before The Carnival. This deconstructs one of the sections of You Are A Winter Storm and slows it down. The organ melody that enters the song midway through is reminiscent of carnival music, hence the title ‘Calm Before The Carnival’. This was later remixed and produced as the song ‘Verge’ for my third album ‘Alchemy’

Optimystic II. Originally conceived about 18 years ago. Optimystic II has been played live at my August CD launch at The Velvet Lounge in 2008.

Tunnel. This is the original recorded version of this song. It features an acoustic lead guitar for the first half of the song instead of the heavy guitar and sped up the tempo on the final LP2 Remastered 2018 version. I re-recorded a lot of the guitar parts. This song was one of the most challenging to finish. Going back to the original is nice after so many years, there’s a nice feel to this version even if the overall execution misses the mark by a little bit.

DKS :: LP2 PART II Chasing Dragons There’s an arcade in town that’s hidden away. You can only find it when the sky is grey. To get past the man you have to know what to say. With a tip of your hat down the spiral stairway Deeper and deeper past rot and decay. Through the old iron gate by the statues of clay. Your sharp trained eyes view the inferno dante. Patrons and dealers open risque. So you slip it away, slip it away. Takers givers, hazy blue smoke ballet. Think yourself part of the underground cliché. It’s the last time, the last plunge into the fray. Fumbling through pockets for the secret sachet. So many times that you’ve become blasé. Go on treat yourself like it’s your birthday. Head in your hands, eyes closed and body sway. Colourful dreams take hold like rainbow puree. And you’re drifting away, drifting away You’re there cos’ you need it You know that you want it Your wish is to have it Give in and you take it You’re there cos’ you need it You know that you want it Your wish is to have it Give in and you take it The ultimate thrill to keep the dragons at bay. Chasing the illusion, see the world in x-ray. Everything’s better when you see it this way. Beware the night, friends and who they portray. You’re caught in a loop rewind and replay. The morning light rises – it must be Tuesday. Your senses prevail don’t want to obey. So you give it away, give it away You’re here cos’ you need it You know that you want it

Chasing Dragons was originally titled “Want It, Need It” and was going to be about the trappings of consumerism. It ended up being about drugs. The song title, Chasing Dragons, is taken from the slang reference to opium dens and their patrons being known to ‘chase the dragon’. Some of the lyrical imagery was inspired by the graphic novel “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Volume 1” written by Alan Moore, illustrated by Kevin O’Neill.

Cobalt. This is a reworking of the song ‘Blue Velvet Storm’ from my first album ‘August’. I stripped out the heavy distorted guitar work from the original, altered the bass line, included whispered vocals, a heart-beat drum rhythm and intricate guitar parts to change the overall tone of the song. Due to the language in the chorus being easily misinterpreted, I decided to omit ‘Cobalt Heart’ on the free digital release version. Plus, I felt as this was ground I had already covered previously - it didn’t need to be included here.

rif

Adrift. A simple instrumental that was omitted from the free digital release version as I felt the album was becoming too long. I like the change in pace of the two piano parts. It’s also a throw back to 80’s music which was not intentional at the time of recording.

song was much longer. An additional 3 minutes of guitar solo and instrumental formed the songs coda. It is made available here for the first time since 2011 and features some nice lead/ ebow guitar playing. It was cut from the definitive version of LP2 due to length.

Morphine As you hold your face Heavy in your hands As you weigh it all up And begin to understand As the process accelerates And you shift down again As your system is compromised You get ready to crash It comes on slowly From the base of your spine Only mildly intense And the same every time Indifferent by the feeling And lost inside It comes on all friendly Now that you’ve gambled away The fate held in your hands Well it didn’t cost much Only about twenty grand There is no consequence And hopefully no contraband And the process accelerates As you shift down again All systems are compromised Where did you put that stash? It comes on slowly From the base of your spine Only mildly intense And the same every time Lost inside this feeling And motionless in mind It comes on so friendly Well you’ve dropped the fate That you held in your arms You weighed it all up And didn’t see the harm That the bliss and the fall Was all part of the charm And the process accelerates As you shift down again It may be far too late You are about to crash

Stars I look into your eyes They tell me your secrets Deep green doorways Into your world I look beyond your soul Far beyond your eyes Through looking glass windows And one million lives I sense your smile rising Feel your heart pounding Silhouettes dancing Essence of life Falling through time Through time and space I fall from your grace And only one thing remains Everything changes I watch as it falls Slips through my fingers And fades from me My phoenix from fire My moths to the flame All fuel is exhausted And nothing is the same In your eyes tonight - stars - shine In your eyes angel - stars - shine Running through fields I see ghost images I’ve lost my horizon And found dark reflections My heart isn’t beating I can’t feel my feet My body is weighted Hollow and deep Souls to the flame Our lives to the fire Burning all reason And our desires In your eyes tonight - stars - shine In your eyes angel - stars - shine In your eyes tonight angel - stars - shine The stars in your eyes - shine

Passion Aggressive It’s coming on strong(er) It’s coming on fast(er) It’s coming on strong It’s coming on fast It’s coming on now I hope it lasts

Feel the fury - it’s all around you He closes in the god of sound A little song for you Here’s a little song to remember me by Dry your eyes baby please don’t cry I’ve got to go now I’ve got to fly This is it baby - this is goodbye Keep this little song to remember me by Hold it close to you and deep inside With you so lovely I had a great time In your heart I found the counterpart to mine Here’s a little song to remember me by Dry your eyes baby I know you did try You’ve got to go now you’ve got to fly So take this song with you and say goodbye Say you’ll always love me and cherish the time We spent together when we were blind Always a wish away the binding of lives So I wrote this little song to remember it by…

Sound & Fury It gives you the power and will And the courage to really feel That your struggle will finally be Favoured with chivalry So pray to the powers that are Take you to the brightest star To arrive where you’re meant to be With grace and pride and honesty Feel the fury - shake the ground Rock your world & knock you down Feel the fury - it’s all around you He closes in the god of sound With sword, armour and shield The greatest weapon you can wield Is the fire you have inside To do what you know is right Hold it high and hold it proud Charge into this darkest hour Cut it true and down to size Look you fear straight in the eyes Feel the fury - shake the ground Rock your world & knock you down Feel the fury - it’s all around you He closes in the god of sound Your fight is won But the battle’s just begun And the conflict will finally be Favoured with victory So pray to the powers of five Keep you moving and alive Where you’re destined to be With grace and pride and integrity Feel the fury - shake the ground Rock your world & knock you down

DKS art & design With the increased awareness of, and attendance at, pop culture conventions in Perth, I saw an opportunity to expand my business into the area of original art and artbased products. DKS art & design was formed in 2014. The main focal point of this business venture was to produce fan art of popular culture; film, TV and comic book icons. We all have more than one creative muscle and the art I created for DKS art & design gave me the welcome and cathartic opportunity to creatively flex some muscles that had not been used for a while, and, in the process, learn some new skills and another approach to solving layout, colour and finishing processes. Retail Products I produced a variety of products utilising my artwork effectively for the creation of limited edition digital prints, fabric scrolls, tote bags, mugs, badges, fridge magnets, postcards, greeting cards, bookmarks and stickers. The following pages showcase some of the more popular art pieces I created, as determined by sales and consumer response at pop culture conventions and various online stores such as Etsy, Redbubble and Society6. Studio Ghibli Fan Art The animated feature films created by Studio Ghibli, and especially those directed by Hayao Miyazaki, are inspiring original works bursting with fantastical creatures, heroines and heroes, vivid scenery, lush colours and evergreen story. It is easy to see why these films are universally popular and have been embraced by western cultures. I have created a series of fan art prints, capturing prestigious scenes from Miyazaki’s classic films; My Neighbour Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away and Ponyo. These are amongst my most well received works and the process of making this art, introduced me to the wonders of working in the medium of water colour inks. ... I like making new products and items using both digital and traditional methods: graphic design and illustration/painting techniques, combined with wood crafting and fabrication, to make physical products such as scrolls, photography props and dioramas; items that can be touched, seen and experienced in real space. Creating anything new is exciting, even if it is only new to me. Art (and music) ignites my creative fire, so it always comes down to those two for me. Art and music is always the answer. What is the question, I hear you ask? The question is life. Music is always the answer to life. And art? Art explains to us what life is.

PHOTOGRA

Images captured. A moment frozen in time, forever. That decisive moment to depress the shutter button. The allure of photography. A graphic designer should have the fundamental understanding of design, illustration, typography, and also photography at their disposal. My first introduction to photography was at secondary school and further at tertiary college. During my first year studying graphic design, I completed a six-month unit in analogue photography, which was at a time prior to the more common-place digital practices that we enjoy today in our everyday lives. I bought my first DSLR camera for the purpose of photographing paintings and illustrations which could then be touched-up and coloured in Photoshop. I found that taking high resolution photographs captured more detail and subtlety than the scanner I was using. The camera was also very handy for capturing reference locations and for my long form still life photography project, Plastic Passion.

APHY

When photographing artwork, I find it best to use soft, natural light as opposed to direct sunlight. If I use studio lighting rigs, I make sure the lights on either side are on a 45 degree angle to the artwork being shot, and not facing directly on the artwork. I often face the lights towards the ceiling and use the white of the ceiling to ‘bounce’ the light back down, resulting in an even, soft light source. I use a desktop easel to house the original art boards and a large tripod for the camera. I make sure the camera lens is in-line with the artwork, straight on so that the artwork is captured as flat as possible. I don’t zoom-in too close to the art board and I use the easel back to frame the artwork, giving me a reference point to ensure the photo is ‘square’. Where appropriate, I will use a lens correction filter in Photoshop to reduce the ‘fish eye’ effect. The real world is an unlimited source of inspiration for any creative person and having a camera at the ready is an ideal way to capture those unexpected moments, to refer to later on for illustration purposes. We all have cameras on our smart phones that rival digital camera technology from only a generation ago, so it is easier than ever to snap perfect reference material. For myself, my iPhone camera and DSLR are invaluable tools, that I utilise everyday.

A while back, I was given a coffee table photography book ‘Toy Giants’ published by Gingko Press 2009. This stunning photographic exploration of vintage and modern designer toys bought to light that clever photography can instil life into the lifeless. An uncanny realism is present when toys are photographed as portraits. My collection of pop culture statues and action figures has ebbed and flowed over the years and, in 2015, I had the idea to document my collection before selling some older collectibles (to make room for new additions) and my ‘Plastic Passion’ project began to take form.

Plastic Passion showcases photographic and digital techniques, capturing action figures as still-life, showing imperfect details, models in macro, serious toys and poised statues. All intended as art, as portraiture, for fun and as something more profound than the fake-plastic-realism of their existence. The art of making and playing!
