- IDENTIFICATION WITH AN IDEAL OBJECT AND DESTRUCTIVENESS

PSYCHOANALYTIC PROJECTS ON PREVENTION - WORKING WITH MIGRANT FAMILIES

Radicalisation of fundamentalistic thinking can be found in several cultures and religions. The dark and destructive side of this phenomenon challenges psychoanalysis to explain how religious certainty, as a narcissistic fantasy of an identification with an ideal object/ideal state, leads to violent acts and states of mind that intermingle and mutually reinforce one another on the psychological plane. These significant relations will be discussed.

Psychoanalytic conceptualizations have pronounced the role of unconscious fantasies for the radicalization of fundamentalistic thinking. Therefore early parenting and the development of good object relations is relevant in preventing the development of fundamentalist thinking.

IN LATE ADOLESCENCE - SOME CASE

Many of the Islamic suicide bombers went through a process of self-radicalization in late adolescence leading to an identification with radical political ideologies. It is a destructive solution of a deep crisis in late adolescent development. We will describe these processes and provide some case examples.

In this presentation two large empirical prevention studies for ‘children at risk’ in the Kindergarden (the so-called EVA project) and during the first three years of life (First Steps) will be discussed. The presentation will focus on children from traumatized migrant and refugee families. 15.30 – 16.00

MORNING SESSIONS: 09.10 – 10.45 Chair: Mrs Helga Coulter DR DOMENICO DI CEGLIE THE USE OF METAPHORS IN UNDERSTANDING ATYPICAL GENDER IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT AND ITS PSYCHOSOCIAL IMPACT Over the years Domenico has found a number of metaphors which have helped him deal with particular dynamics in therapeutic work with young people with gender dysphoria, and with group and institutional conflicts involving the Gender Identity Development Service. In this presentation he describes those metaphors which relate to particular problems or conflicts stimulated in his mind, and how they are linked to the vicissitude of identity development, in particular that of atypical gender identity, and issues regarding symbolisation or symbolic thinking. He will use clinical material, observation, and DVD clips to illustrate his points.

MORNING SESSIONS: 0900 – 10.30 Dr CARINE MINNE INFANTICIDE, MATRICIDE OR SUICIDE? TOWARD A PSYCHOANALYTIC UNDERSTANDING OF A KILLING

This paper will focus on the psychoanalytic treatment, in a high security hospital over many years, of a young female patient who killed her baby. Legally considered as a case of infanticide, psychoanalytically it can be understood as the killing of the mother, or of the self. I present a theoretical understanding of the mental state shifts from more psychotic functioning to a more personality disordered presentation, with momentary glimpses of sanity. The necessity for regular psychoanalytically informed communications to members of the multidisciplinary teams will be raised. 10.30 – 11.00

Morning tea

11.00 – 12.30 Dr ELYN SAKS (via satellite) MY JOURNEY THROUGH MADNESS Diagnosed with schizophrenia at an early age, Elyn will tell the story of her life-long struggles with this severe mental illness. Given “very poor” and “grave” prognoses she was not expected to live independently, let alone to work. Yet today she lives a rich, full, and productive life with a great professional career, many friends, and a loving husband. Elyn will punctuate her narrative with passages from her book, “The Center Cannot Hold.” In conclusion, she will draw some policy implications from her story, recognizing she is an “n” of only one.

12.30 – 14.00 Lunch AFTERNOON SESSION: (includes Afternoon Tea) 14.00 – 15.30 Dr CARINE MINNE VIOLENCE TO BODY AND MIND: TREATING PATIENTS WHO HAVE KILLED

I present the long-term psychoanalytic treatments of two young male patients in a high security hospital - one a case of matricide and the other the killing of a complete stranger. While part of the overall treatment plan, the analyses continued on transfer to medium security and back into the community. Structural changes, which can emerge in such long-term continuous treatments, are described and illustrated clinically. The traumatic effect of ‘improvement’ is emphasized, as is the risk of further enactment, which can trigger considerable anxiety in those involved in the care of these patients. Regular psychoanalytic consultations to the clinical team members are again emphasized as necessary ‘immunization’ against the contagiousness of such mental disorders in prison settings. 15.30 – 16.00 Afternoon tea 16.00 – 17.00 Panel discussion with Dr Carine Minne and Mr Neville Symington 17.00 – 18.00 Nibbles and drinks Readings Bookstore will be at the Conference

Nancy Caro Hollander explores how social forces and ideology converge with unconscious dynamics to frame our experience of living in a traumatogenic globalized culture of crisis. Nancy demonstrates the extent to which “the political is personal” and illustrates through case examples how the social context of private life is inevitably manifested in the clinical setting and should be a legitimate site of analysis of the intersubjective psychoanalytic encounter.

about the speakers Dr NANCY HOLLANDEr, California, is a research psychoanalyst in private practice. Nancy also holds a number of distinguished academic positions, including Professor Emeritus of Latin American History, California State University. Nancy has explored the psychosocial dynamic and dramatic life changes in the post 9/11 USA, with its broader implications internationally, and the psychological meanings of living in tumultuous political, economic and social conditions. Nancy has analysed how experience in the social/political life of patients inevitably makes its way into the clinical setting. A prolific writer, Nancy’s books include “Uprooted Minds: Surviving the Politics of Terror in the Americas”. Nancy has also directed films and hosted a regular program on Pacifica Radio on various themes, including “Psychoanalysis and Politics”. Dr JULIAN BUrNSIDE, AO QC, is an Australian barrister, human rights and refugee advocate, and author. Whilst maintaining his practice as a commercial litigator, appearing in many major class actions, Julian is particularly known for his staunch opposition to the mandatory detention of asylum seekers. He has also acted in several major cases on behalf of Indigenous Australians. Julian has received many prestigious awards, one of which was an Officer of the Order of Australia, 2009, for services as a human rights advocate, to the arts as a patron and fundraiser, and to the law. He has several successful publications on law, human rights and philology, and in addition he is a patron of numerous arts organizations. 24/01/13 8:19 AM
