01 Brief To design a Timber Pavilion. The project site is located in Jesmond dene, in Newcastle Upon Tyne. The pavilion is to show the connection between nature, art and architecture. The pavilion should use timber as the primary material for construction. The pavilion should be flexible and consist of fluent spaces. Flexible in the sense that it can be used for different activites which include threatre performances, reading, relaxing, or an art exhibiton. The size of the pavilion should not exceed 300sqm. It should consist of the following; • A locakable and completely enclosed Art exhibition area of 100sqm, free ventilation but excludes entry of rain water that can damage art work. • Semi enclosed area for lectures and performances. Stage & seats for 50 people, area of 100sqm. (can be linked to exhibition space.) • Outdoor seating area that is part of the pavilion, area of 100sqm Submission Should Consist of; • Floor Plan • Analytical Diagrams • Elevations and Sections • Site Plan • 3D model or Perspective

02 Information on Trada

Open Academcy, Norwich, Norfolk.

TRADA created the competition and prepared the brief. The competition was created as a research for students on what they can do with different species of wood and a good gesture to the environment as they celebrated their anniversary. TRADA means Timber Research And Development Association. They are involved in specifying the use of timber and wood products. They are also involved in the supply of

wood to different end users which include Architects, Engineers, etc. They also tend to make research on wood to discover new things about wood and supply there members with new information that tend to enhance their (member’s) work. they serve as a timber consultancy. Their recent timber solutions are shown above.

Site Photos These pictures show the different features on the site. They are taken for different parts of the Jesmond dene park. e.g Trees, the stream, the bridge, etc. They all come together to compliment the site. Some of them also have to be put into consideration during the process of the analysis of the site, because they also tend to either enchance a design or they can act as threats the the design. For example the stream can be tagged as a potential hazard because when they is alot of rainfall it can cause a flood on the site.

04 Concept Sketches

The concept of the design is from the trunk of a tree. Using the pitch or centre core as the centre of an exhibition space. More like the mid-point of of the pavilion. the angular rings provide an aesthetic feature for the a semi enclosed space. Giving a structure a four sides of support which are curve, making it look like the event is going on in a tree. Serves also as the central point of the whole pavilion.

From there you can access the open sitting area and also the art exhibition space. Exhibition space so to be more like a branch attached to section on the tree.

05 Joints Used There are mainly three(3) joints to be used in the construction of this pavilion. The three joints are part of the strongest joints we have, which include, 1) Dovetail Joint 2) Half Lap Joint 3) Mortise and Tenon Joint Dovetail joint Mortise & tenon joint

Dovetail Joint We had different types of dovetail joints but the one to be used is called a Through Dovetail. It will be used on some of the edges of the structure.

Half Lap Joint A crossed half lap Joint will be used for the joint of the framed wall. Precast framed walls.

Mortise and Tenon Joint Used on the edges on the framed wall so it goes into the wood columns. Its supported by steel galvanized plates to make the joints stronger

06 Materials PINE The wood is used for the floor decking in the art exhibition space. Its relatively cheap and can be supplied to site in excess (high availability). Quite strong and also decorative both polished and unpolished.

GLASS For the windows of the framed walls and balustrade in the design. Complements the look of buildings and it is also a decorative brittle substances.

GLULAM Very strong and very flexible wood. It can be shaped to achieve the different curves that will be required in the design. Its is highly available.

STEEL Is a relatively cheap metal and highly available.Used for welding assemblies of the joints, and also for reinforcing wood that is used in the design.

SOLAR PANEL It is used on the roof of the art Exhibition to produce the electricity for the exhibition space, and also a way of using only renewable energy on the site.

SOLAR PANEL(How to set it up) E.g 2 solar panels will produce about 12 volts each. The oanels have to be wired in series, Positive terminal of one to the negative terminal of the other. They have to be connected to a regulator. The regulator should be rated at 24volts so it can take the volts the solar panel makes. From the regulator to the battery. 12 volts can power a 30 watts bulb for 40 hours at the a 100amp. The thickness of the cable also determines the amps it will carry.
