PROLOGUE

I think architecture is the end of social development, which is often a reflection of social state. In the final analysis, architectural design is to create a space atmosphere with various methods. I often wonder how a change in a certain atmosphere can bring about changes in people or a region. Can architectural design become a source of power rather than at the end of development?

I love the work of architect Alejandro Aravena. I think his discussion on the sociality of architecture is something most architects lack. The sustainability refers not only to the long-term use of the building, but also to the private transformation of the residents themselves. Under the guidance of the system designed by the architect, these actions, which are usually thought to destroy the original space, become part of the design and continuously inject new vitality into the area. At this moment, the user is the designer, achieving a very benign atmosphere.

I have a strong interest in the construction form of traditional architecture and the scene atmosphere that architecture can bring. I like to explore the boundary of architecture and try to think whether the change of architecture as space itself can bring some new impetus to people's experience or the development of a region. In my next few works, I will show the spatial treatment of architecture and its positive impact on people and regions

THE VANISHED WALL Happy Spaces – Integrating Architecture and Landscape Group work, Partner: Damo QIAO & Zhenyu WANG Tutor: Lingzhe Wang Location: Lima, Peru, 2019

Argument: Big cities often contain places that lack identity and whose existences are hardly linked with culture, history or tradition. These places are so-called “periphery” or “degraded” areas that remained isolated and un-integrated, such as neighborhoods with social conflict or poverty. The architects’ mission is, therefore, to recognize the character of the site and create its ‘sense of place’. This creation looks into the transforming of negative spaces into positive ones by bringing out its inspiring and attractive qualities – this is defined as “happy spaces”, by designing and building a “happy building” in an “unhappy environment”.

Design explanation: explanation: There is a ten feet tall wall with wire on the top separating the rich from the poor in Lima, Peru. The wall was initially built in the 1980s for security but now it is not only the scar for the poor but the gap between the rich and the poor. We hope to create a building that can eliminate the existence of the walls, in which the poor and the rich can find their suitable situation and live happily. New employment relationships are created to provide jobs for the poor and cheap rent and labor for the young artist. To solve the problem, we take the third force “The Art” into consideration. The young artists need cheap rental and labor, which create job opportunities for the poor. Then, the new employment relationships followed. At the same time, when the poor work for artists, their artistic and cultural accomplishments will also be improved, which can help them integrate into the new community. In this design, we first introduce a new construction mechanism. In the new mechanism, the development of a community or even a small city should be organic. The artist studio is the starting point of development. The space and facilities of other different attributes show an upward trend with the growth of the park scale. Meanwhile, the role of the poor themselves is constantly changing and organically integrated into this rising process. In terms of construction technology, we look into all kinds of available and accessible local building materials and construction processes. Through the redesign and combination of these materials and processes, we finally provided modular spatial prototypes with different functional characteristics for refugees. The operability of this construction system also allows more people to participate in the construction.

The material wall is also the spiritual wall, aggravating the misunderstanding and deteriorating the relationship between the rich and the poor. Also, the surrounding and basic facilities in the other side of the wall are in the poor quality because of the lack of city planning.

THE FUNCTIONAL DISTRIBUTION RESIDENCE The two sides of the wall are all high-density residences.

03

EDUCATION As the largest functional area of the poor, it is a waste of space.

CEMETERY A huge difference in education levels, especially in higher education.

SOCIAL SERVICE Museums, sports centers, parks and other services are all in the rich area.

There are separate entrances for the rich, the poor and the visitors. Finally we bring them together in the artistic park. In places where different groups of people come together, people have the opportunity to reduce the prejudice caused by identity differences through a certain way of behavior.

08

WORKSHOP

The self-built and the easydisassemble artist workshops are in the center of the park, where the poor and rich gather. This studio can meet the basic needs of artists, including living, artistic creation and so on. Public space can also be used as a place for visitors and artistic creation.

On the platform, people of different identities can participate in common artistic activities, such as painting and graffiti. In order to eliminate the discrimination and Prejudice caused by the difference of social status.

09

SHOPS

The shops group spontaneously spread along the wall, selling local handicrafts and providing catering.

The wall of shame covered with colorful paintings activates this area. The wall will transform from a passive functional wall to a landmark landscape.

Each standardized shop is open to people on both sides. It is not only commercial trade, but also can promote the communication between people on both sides of the wall

THE STAGE OF LIFE Design of Small-scale Residential Complex Individual academic work Tutor: Yue Guo Location: Sanyuanli, Beijing, 2020

Argument: In the context of contemporary big cities, all kinds of groups encounter, collide, contact and friction in the same space. However, the modern "living" style and the singleness of community function make the relationship between them gradually alienated and become the embellishment of rough superposition on the natural environment, exposing the dominant attitude of ran. Architects need to create a living space with no boundary and good interaction with the surrounding environment from the point of view of living itself and objects, and respond to the complex and diverse living space with the integration of degree.

Design explanation: I chose eight people around me as the research object. And I investigated their identity, background, age, occupation, lifestyle, interests and hobbies. They are in different groups, but they have strong or weak ties with others. I want to create a space for positive communication and interaction between different groups of people. I chose the way of blurring the boundary of traffic space and activity space to design. When people arrive at a certain residence in this place, they can see or directly participate in some uncertain public activities in the corridor or public platform, such as small parties, painting, watching movies, etc. Some of the activities that can generate communication are also transferred from indoor to outdoor, such as making models and cooking. Due to the mandatory communication intervention, new fetters will be created. In terms of spatial logic, I adopt the way of block operation. I divide the blocks into two categories: private space and open space. In the gap between the two parts, there are traffic flow lines and some small activity places. In this way, there is no pure traffic space in the building. People are also participating in social activities while walking, so as to break the barriers of different groups. In the way of expression, I chose the way of manual model, which can more directly explore the experience of space from the perspective of human.

15

16

LOCATION I chose eight people of different occupations as the objects of discussion and placed them in the same residential area. After investigation, most of them chose places with convenient transportation and rich greening. After selection, the northern part of Sanlitun is used as a residential area.

BACKGROUND

However, the unity of modern life style and community function has alienated the relationship.

Even if there is close contact, differences in occupation, age, or lifestyle can seriously hinder people's communication. As a result, prejudice exacerbates the gap between different groups of people. 17

RESTART AND NEGOTIATION Design of Old City Reconstruction Individual academic work Tutor: Wenhao Ding Location: Hualou Street, Wuhan, 2020

Argument: The world in 2020 begins with an outbreak of an epidemic. Wuhan has undoubtedly suffered the most serious urban trauma, which makes people remember deeply. Various industries have also been impacted to varying degrees. People begin to separate from each other, and people and cities begin to separate. It seems that from one day on, we will start to be vigilant about social contact and keep a distance. Although the epidemic continues, everything is moving in a good direction. Although we can't restart time, we can restart a city and some memories. Based on the background of "construction negotiation" and "epidemic situation", this project explores the publicity, landmark and diversity of urban space after the epidemic. On the one hand, watching movies is the best way to gather people and achieve commercial purposes. On the other hand, in the epidemic situation, the disadvantages caused by the traditional way of watching the film are revealed. It is necessary to carry out innovation to adapt to the background of the new era. After the continuous downturn of the cinema industry, how to restart people's viewing experience, rethinking and defining the relationship between film viewing space and urban space will be the research focus of this topic.

Design explanation: Negotiation is a two-sided act. Negotiation is not a simple contradiction arising from disputes, but a dialogue, negotiation and compromise under the contradiction, so as to achieve a mutually beneficial and win-win situation for both sides. We should look at a contradiction from different perspectives. It is not only necessary to analyze and transform the existing space, but also to create new space to generate dialogue and respond to the results of negotiations. Here in Hualou street, Wuhan, I take an old commercial street as the research object. Three nodes are selected as the main research objects in the street. In addition, I redefined the city cinema and discussed the spatial and streamline changes that different viewing methods can bring. Finally, I discuss how the new city cinema can negotiate with the old commercial and residential areas to achieve the goal of restart.

BACKGROUNG

The world in 2020 begins with an outbreak of an epidemic. Wuhan has undoubtedly suffered the most serious urban trauma, which makes people remember deeply. Various industries have also been impacted to varying degrees. People and people began to separate, people and the city began to separate.

DIPLOMA AND SOLUTION

Traditional cinemas are usually located in large shopping malls, which require a series of processes to reach the cinema. At one stage of the epidemic, the blockade led to no longer being able to watch.

The new model is more open to the internal community or external tourists. The streamline of the crowd is more simple and flexible.

The traditional mode of cinema is to stay in a certain area for a long time and stay at a fixed position. This mode is not conducive to the renewal of the city.

The new mode has a more flexible screen, and people can choose to walk and stay according to their own needs.

27

IMPROVEMENT

The new model has no fixed seats, and people can control their distance according to their needs.

TRADITION

Due to the requirement of distance during the epidemic period, it is a great waste of space to have adjacent seats in the traditional cinema.

CONCEPT AND SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION The new model is divided into two concepts: immersion and roaming The four basic spatial patterns are arranged from top to bottom, which is also the transition from "immersion" to "roaming". From the perspective of users, the higher the model is connected with residents, the lower mode is open to tourists; from the perspective of openness, the openness from top to bottom becomes stronger.

TYPE 1 It is a closed box, an immersive experience, mainly used by residents.

TYPE 2 It is composed of several small boxes, and each viewing area is guided by the route.

TYPE 3 It has a strong stream-line directionality and can stay in some certain areas.

TYPE 4 The most open, as a continuation of the square and street, roaming experience.

28

LOCATION

WU HAN

The site is located in Hualou street, Wuhan City, Hubei Province. Hualou street, as an old commercial street in the fast developing city, has a glorious past. Hualou Street's business model is dominated by peddlers, which is facing the dilemma of lagging behind in the trend of modernization. With the arrival of the new epidemic in 2020, the development of this area has been seriously impacted.

GENERATE

With the existing commercial buildings as the basis of negotiation, combined with the main roads and green space, several major areas are divided. The new cinema will be integrated with the traditional commercial area in the way of embedded box. Finally, a new commercial format will be formed to drive the development of the whole region.

URBAN MIXED COMMUNITY Design of Residential complex Individual academic work Tutor: Jiahui Diao Location: Taipingqiao Street East, Beijing, 2020

Argument: In today's era, urban planning is on the road of refinement. Since the opening of China's real estate market for 30 years, most of the residential areas we can see are closed and single function. While people are gradually aware of his shortcomings, this situation is gradually changing in the last two years. The Ministry of housing and urban rural development issued a policy two years ago, and the closed community may become history. On the one hand, mixed residence means that there are more functions in the residential area / residential complex, and the community oriented and city oriented functions can bring more vitality to the residential community. On the other hand, mixed residence also means that the residence faces the target groups of different classes in the city. It must be attractive and affordable. At the same time, in the past urban area of Beijing, many hutongs are facing street style renovation. As a result, many small traders lost their way of living and livelihood. The community also lost this part of the function of small-scale business. How to reintegrate this part of functions and people in urban design is also a key issue to be considered.

Design explanation: At the beginning, I analyzed the overall situation with the following keywords: new urban density, minimal housing, social mix, regional residential culture. On this basis, the specific needs of the individual residential area are analyzed, including the specific needs of different functions. After that, in the case of clarifying the relationship between the city, we study the building volume, and generate the functional layout of the whole residential area and single residential. The design base is located in Xicheng District of Beijing, east of Taipingqiao street. It covers an area of 20,000 square meters. Around the base are large quadrangles, high-rise commercial and residential buildings, apartment buildings and large green space. Through the design, I will make the residential complex fit the surrounding environment, consider the needs of different groups of people, and create a variety of public space.

37

38

BACKGROUNG

In 2017, there was a major fire accident in a shared house in Daxing, Beijing, due to private renovation. After that, the Beijing government issued a series of policies to rectify the construction form of Hutong and demolished a large number of illegal buildings, including shops and restaurants.

DIPLOMA BEFORE

PRESENT

Once upon a time, there were many houses with the walls taken apart to be used as shops along the street. It provides convenient living services for the residents in this area.

After the renovation, although the safety problem has been solved. However, the corresponding service functions have disappeared, and residents need to travel far away to enjoy such functions.
