Dear LCA Families and Friends, It is hard to believe we only have one more month of school before summer break. If your family is like my family, then spring is a busy time. Around LCA, this time of year is filled with baseball and softball games, tennis matches, track meets, lacrosse matches, academic and robotics competitions, chorus and band concerts, field days, and end-of-semester tests. Good luck to you and your family as you maneuver through this busy time of the year.

The end of the school year also brings forth a time to celebrate our teachers and administrators. Next week is National Teacher Appreciation Week.

Lexington Christian Academy is blessed with dedicated teachers who view their jobs as more than just a profession. It is also a ministry. We are thankful for the manner by which they invest in our children and share the love of Jesus. Take advantage of this week and let your children’s teachers know how much you appreciate them.

As you may have heard, our beloved elementary principal, Denny McCardle is retiring at the end of the school year. I would like to invite you to join us for Mr. McCardle’s retirement celebration, which will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2019. We hope you can join us for this special celebration.

Updates from the April board meeting held on Monday, April 22, 2019.

Advancement Terri Morrical, the advancement chairperson, presented a recommendation to reinstate LCA’s Eagle Club with funds utilized for the “wishes and wants” of the school. Teachers, principals, administration, coaches, Board or parents may put forth a proposal for use of the funds. The Advancement Committee, and then the Board, will review requests for the funds. The goal is to have 30 members by September 30, 2019 and 75 members for the end of the 2019-2020 school year. The minimum contribution would be $1,000 per participating family.

Education Lori Graham, chair of the education committee shared several recommendations. The Board reviewed and approved the following recommendations: Adopting AP Physics for the 2019-2020 school year.

Education (continued) Removing the college writing requirement for all students. The English Department and high school administration feel this change will better serve the needs of the students as well as the department. Each paper currently required in College Writing will be absorbed into the English 9 – 12 curriculum. This will ensure that all students, even those who before were exempt from College Writing, will complete the required writing assignments, including, an in-depth non-fiction and argumentative paper better preparing students for the type of writing found on standardized tests like the ACT. Adopting Creative Arts for a junior high elective. During the course, students will make art projects with a focus on stage and set design, props, costumes, and make-up.

In addition to the above-mentioned recommendations, Lori shared information regarding two initiatives at the elementary school. The first pertained to transitions from grades 3 to 4 and 5 to 6. The goal of the program is to assist our students in the transition, preparing them for additional expectations and responsibilities, and then providing them support and guidance. The second initiative pertained to bullying. Mrs. LeAnna Hensley, our elementary guidance counselor, is working to develop bullying protocols and programs for our elementary school.

Additional details will be provided in the near future.

Finance Tina Navis, finance chairperson, and Terri Morrical, advancement chairperson, provided an overview of the school’s finances. In addition, Seth Robinson, our Director of Campus Operations, presented a proposal to adopt Canvas as the school’s learning management system beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. The Board approved the proposal.

Nominating Jeff Gehring, chair of the nominating committee, provided an update on the board nomination process. As of Monday, we have received 12 board applications from parents. Over the next month, the nominating committee will vet the applicants and submit recommendations to the Board during the May meeting.

New Business The regular June monthly board meeting will be moved to July 1, 2019.

In April, each TK class celebrated learning about the letters Q & U with a wedding, where the letters were married. They also visited a farm to learn how a farm works and what animals can be found there.

Ginny Schreiner (PS and 3rd-5th Art) "My favorite LCA memory – all the wonderful students and families I have been able to get to know over the years. I love getting to have siblings of past students. I have enjoyed being able to teach different subjects in every grade from preschool-6th grade over the past 13 years!"

Allison Sandbrink (Intervention) "My favorite LCA memory is the first time I heard a student say he wanted to pray over another student in our group. This was very moving to me after being in the public school system for a long time. This confirms how blessed we are to have LCA!" Luke Smith (CoLab) "My favorite LCA memory was during my first year. We had our first child (Evangeline) exactly one week into my first year of teaching. The amazing home room parents of my class threw a baby shower for me, complete with a watermelon replica of a baby bassinet. The students brought books with their names signed in them. They also brought lots of baby clothes and a stroller. That was almost seven years ago and my kids (I have 3 now) still read those books. I get to tell them about the students who gave them to me (all good things of course!).

We held our last Donuts with Dads of the school year on April 23. We loved having former alums, Tyler Johnson and Jacob Glancy as the guest speakers.

Pictured right: 8th graders have been studying the planets in science. To help them gain better understanding of our solar system, they have been using an oculus virtual reality equipment to explore the planets.

High School Math Teachers Steve Combs (Geometry, AP Computer Principles, Engineering Principles and Computer Programming) "My advice to families is that if you ever wonder about sending your child back to public school rather than LCA, take a day and visit a public high school. Walk down the halls during class change. Go in the student restrooms. Visit a general level classroom for a few minutes. Attend a school assembly.

Talk to a security guard about issues faced by students at the school. Then come back here and do the same. Then decide."

LCA continued it's 30th Anniversary Celebration with a special chapel and evening concert featuring Paul Overstreet, Jason Crabb and Billy Austin.

High School Math Teachers Cara Winn (Geometry) "I love teaching math because the variety of topics are so diverse, that students who struggle with one concept might do very well with another. I really enjoy seeing students' confidence in their ability to do math increase when they come upon a problem where they can say, 'Wow! I can't believe I actually get this!'"

Eryn Workman (Algebra I and Algebra II) "During Pi Day last year, we were doing activities that involved circles. One of these activities was a hoola-hoop contest. Coach Galloway had come in to enjoy the festivities right about the time we were starting the contest. My students were so competitive and wanted to win but they were also cracking up. We laughed till our bellies hurt. This is one of my favorite memories - to see my students having so much fun."

Earlier this month, students in the 6th Grade Academy took advantage of the nice weather to continue work in their community garden. This has been a joint effort as some high school students built the boxes and sixth grade students painted them. Students researched in science class which plants they’d like to grow and which ones would grow well in Kentucky.

Based on that research, they decided to plant snow peas, tomatoes, okra, zucchini, onions, lettuce and beans in the classroom. Now they will transplant those plants to the raised beds in the garden and watch them grow!

Students in the 6th Grade Academy concluded their study on Ancient Greece with a Greek feast. They also made togas and enjoyed playing Olympic-type games in PE class.

Coleman Marshall, 6th Grade Academy & Junior High School Principal Tell us about yourself and your family. What are some things you would like others to know about you?

I was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky. When I was entering into first grade, my parents made the decision to send my older sister, Krista, younger brother, Cameron, and me to LCA. Krista is married to a major in the U.S. Army, and they are currently stationed in California with their two daughters Naomi and Mackenzie. Cameron and I are only two years apart, and so growing up we loved to play pranks on my sister and also listen to the Space Jam soundtrack while playing basketball. In 2010, I married my wife Amanda, who is originally from Ashland, Kentucky. She is a first grade teacher with Fayette County Public Schools.

I graduated from Asbury University with a B.A. in History and a minor in Latin. Originally, I planned on becoming a history professor, specializing in late Roman and Anglo-Saxon England. Several doors shut, and I felt God calling me to K-12 education, and so then completed my M.A. in Social Studies Education. Presently, I am working on my Ed.S degree in Educational Leadership at the University of Kentucky.

Tell us about your role at LCA. I serve as the 6th Grade Academy and Junior High Principal.

I oversee day-to-day operations, manage the budget, analyze student data, oversee teacher professional development, and develop academic programs. I also work with an organization based out of Indianapolis, called Magnify Learning. Through that work, I developed a passion for working with teachers and implementing best practices inside the classroom. It is an honor to partner with our teachers and help them grow in their practice. Currently, I am working on a 1:1 initiative for the 7th and 8th grade, and intentionally imbedding career skills within our curriculum.

If asked, why would you encourage families to send their children to LCA? One does not have to look far to see that our culture and world is spinning out of control. LCA provides students with a biblical worldview to equip them to go and be Christ’s ambassadors in our chaotic world. The education and extracurricular activities are built upon excellence, but LCA is unique in that we have an eternal mindset as well as one that focuses on living effectively in this world.

Why are you proud to work at LCA? As a graduate of LCA, I know well how the school prepared me for both college and career. My parents partnered with the school and our church (Southland) to invest in me spiritually, which in my opinion is the best thing about LCA. I look back at the teachers and staff that poured into me and helped me grow, and now I have that opportunity to work with some of those same people and invest in the next generation.

The LCA Baseball Team defeated Sayre 13-3 in six innings to win the 11th Region All A Championship.

The LCA Bass Fishing Team competed in the KHSAA Regional Qualifier.

Champions of the Rowan County Invitational Girls Meet

LCA Boys Tennis Team - Runner Up in the KY High School Tennis Coaches Association Sectional Championship

For the sixth time in seven years, the LCA Softball Team are the All A 11th Region Champions. LCA faced Frankfort in the Regional Finals and came away with a 9-4 victory.

Congrats to Millie German, who signed to play softball at Cedarville University.

Jenna Johnson (7th Grade) placed 3rd at the Lexmark Kentucky Science and Engineering Fair in the category of Energy: Physical. The event was held at EKU on March 30.

Students in the Chick-fil-a Leader Academy sold chicken sandwiches after school for two days with the proceeds going to The Nest.

During spring break, the LCA Chamber Choir toured and performed in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
