A402bL DANIEL NGUYEN CHARLES LAGRECO

A402bL: USC HYBRID HIGH SCHOOL OBJECTIVE The intentions established for this comprehensive studio asked to search and investigate a radical approach to a typical high school project in Los Angeles. As part of the USC Hybrid High School, Dean David C. Dwigher, Ph.d , was the client for the project and quite vocal on what he had in mind for the new school, but encouraged us to explore various options. Throughout the span of the semester, precedents were considered, typologies were developed and analyzed, and comprehensive analysis of building systems and structure were undergone in order to highly develop a scheme that was highly realized and practical while considering the client.

A402bL: USC HYBRID HIGH SCHOOL PRECEDENT An analysis of each student’s personal experience in high school was presented in order to determine the values and reasonings for certain existing typologies in the available school system. Additionally, school precedents were assigned to each student to research and understand typologically, as well as examining a building typology and seeing how it can be used to codify architecture.

A402bL: USC HYBRID HIGH SCHOOL SITE SELECTION OPTIONS This portion of the process allowed us to search for an available lot of roughly 45,000 SF in order to design the school on. We reviewed several sites, but eventually decided to further discuss the Martin Luther King Blvd. lot that consisted of pavement and chain link fence.

LEARNING LOUNGES (14559 SF) COMMON SPACES (17793 SF) MULTIPURPOSE (8861 SF) ADMINISTRATION (2823 SF) OUTDOOR (1527 SF) Structural diagram represents the interre lationships between the core programmatic spaces and the appropriate connections. Although this relationship diagram suggests vertical movement, it does not necessarily have to be a tall form, but instead may focus on the idea of free movement between floors and access through one entry point

A402bL: USC HYBRID HIGH SCHOOL DESIGNING FOR ADAMS + HOOVER A corner mall lot was eventually chosen by our studio instructor and we were asked to make projections for site development as well as begin to diagram the main forces on the site that we felt the need t respond to or utilize. Diagrams in this section suggest my early intentions with the design and reflect where the project would eventually go or focus on.

DEVELOPMENT MODEL FOR ADAMS + HOOVER

Reference adjacent building scale + height, additionally, schemes are developed to emphasize the commercial front aspect of this particular site that runs along Hoover as University Village is rennovated

Referencing the adjacent lot’s existing principles on site design, allocations in the site will be desig nated for greenspace or outdoor

An emphasis on the corner should be investigated due to its geographical importance due to its irregular shift in the grid, but also because USC campus is visible from this edge.
