BACKGROUND OF TULONG DUNONG

TULONG DUNONG

WHAT IS TULONG DUNONG?

Tulong Dunong is a tutoring program founded in 1975 by Fr. James O’Brien S.J. which allows volunteers and students to teach and bond with children from public schools. Fr. O’Brien was inspired by the idea of helping children by teaching them after playing with a group of unprivileged boys. He organized a group of students to help him educate and tutor children, some of these children were also given scholarships to exclusive schools to study.

In return, the same children whom Fr. O’Brien and his students taught, are now the tutors who teach children to help them have a better future. Until this day, Tulong Dunong offers a way for Ateneans to share their knowledge with public school students. Tulong Dunong is not only a way to teach but also a way to learn. As tutors become teachers and also friends with their TD kids, they also learn the true meaning of “Magis” as they do more for others.

MEET THE TD TUTORS

TD TUTORS DANA ANGELA M. BELO

ISAIAH BRAUN P. RAYA

Hello! I am Dana or as my TD kids call me, Ate Dana. I am a student from the Grade 11 ABM strand. I am an only child born and raised in Bulacan, who is also the youngest among my cousins. I am a writer and former "bookworm". As a TD tutor, I teach English which I believe is a subject I am most comfortable with learning and teaching.

Hi! I'm Isaiah or Ice for short. Coming too from the Grade 11 ABM strand and being in only child, I grew up to be self-sufficient. I am a singer-songwriter and an athlete who chose Math as the subject to teach. Not only have I attained previous experience to teaching Math to kids but it has also been one of my strong suits especially in middle school.

As an only child, the idea of tutoring kids intimidated me and I always felt like I was not fit for the position but as I met and grew closer with my TD kids, they proved me wrong. TD was an incredible experience, an enlightening one. These kids did not only learn from my English lessons but I also learned from them as a person.

I believe my top qualities as a tutor would be my ability to level myself with the students and enjoy myself with them bringing us closer as a whole. TD online was an experience and although it was very different from real life, being able to share one's interests and talents online is still very exciting.

TD SESSION ONE TULONG DUNONG PEP TALK. MEETING THE KIDS!

The first TD session (TD pep talk) went very well. After leaving the main Google Meet with Ma’am Meng De Guia, we all transferred to our own TD tutoring rooms. All our students were present which made us very happy. We started greeting them and having a small and casual talk while briefly waiting for everyone to come. We proceeded to start our pep talk with a prayer to thank God for the opportunity to teach these kids and to learn from them too. We both introduced ourselves with a mini photo collage to summarize who we are and then it was the kids’ turn to introduce themselves. They were asked what their name was, from what school they are from, and what their favorite ulam or dish was. After the short introduction, we played two games: bring me and 2 truths and a lie. Since both of us (the TD tutors) grew up playing Bring Me in birthday parties, we decided to bring nostalgia and fun to the kids even online. The kids enjoyed our little Bring Me game that they can be seen running to their kitchen to bring us spoons and forks (an item asked in the game). Through a little pointing system, we had our first winner (Monique) and as for her prize, she was safe from leading the next session’s prayer. We proceeded to do 3 rounds of 2 Truths and a Lie wherein we (the tutors) made the kids guess the lie from 3 random “facts” about ourselves. In the end, Angel won so like Monique, she was safe from next week’s opening and closing prayer. We then gave the students a quick overview of all the lessons that are to be tackled in the following weeks and gave them time to ask us any questions before wrapping things up with a prayer. We wrapped things up and said goodbye to our students.

Seeing our students for the first time made both of us anxious and nervous. We realized that the kids were also nervous at first and we were all strangers to each other. But when we got to meet them, the nervousness turned into joy almost immediately. Not only did they learn about us, but we also get to learn about them; their likes, their hobbies, and even the shows they watch. The kids love to have fun and participate in games. We also noticed their eagerness to learn which motivated us to give our best, especially in the session to come. We realized that these kids are somehow God’s instruments for us to become good teachers and also be good students. We will both try to be more engaging and continue to be fun-loving tutors to them. As their eagerness to learn comes with them having fun, we decided to teach in a way that they learn and have fun. These include fun introductions, mini lessonrelated activities, games, and even music while admitting them to the call. These kids do not just see us as their tutors but they also see us as their ate and kuya, which we plan on embodying more as the sessions continue allowing us to connect with them and share with them our lessons with fun.

TD SESSION TWO TULONG DUNONG SESSION 2. LESSON 1

The second TD session (Week 1) gradually got better as time passed by. As we waited for the students to enter the google meet, we played music and interacted with the kids a bit. Although there was some delay due to issues in the opening prayer, we were able to go on with our lessons. We started it with English talking about the topics of Plot, Character and Narratives. We went on with the motivational activity in the form of a game called 4 pics 1 word. This jump started the kids’ overall engagement with the lesson which made us very happy. We started with a lesson on narratives and the different elements of the story explaining each one. Throughout the lesson, we would ask the students questions in order to continue the level of engagement and fun. We then dived into details such as the different types of conflicts and parts of a plot. The students were able to manage and did really well especially with the short drill at the end. As We concluded that portion of the lesson, we started off Math with my motivational activity. It was a short game which was created to engage more on the playfulness of the students. They were asked to guess the number behind a block which seemed like certain numbers but was actually a whole different number overall. This led all of us to be very happy which acts as a sign that the kids we’re still managing. We went off with my lesson on adding and subtracting fractions, explaining the different types and parts. We explained the different rules that must be followed when doing this while also giving examples to the kids. They were able to manage as well as we got onto the drills which although we weren’t able to go through all, they were able to understand the lesson. We left them off with a problem to solve and we ended the session with a closing prayer. We wrapped things up and said goodbye to our students.

Getting to teach our students for our very first week of lessons was filled with mixed emotions. It all felt so quick as we both went through our lessons. We realized that there was slight awkwardness during certain portions between us and the students but overall, we were able to succeed in teaching our parts. We also realized that although there is some difficulty in teaching, we were able to be understanding between one another which made the experience overall better. We saw God through this session through the laughs and reactions from the kids and their overall enjoyment. It left a smile on our faces and we saw it as a sign from God that we were on the right path. We will both try to be more patient with the students as issues are unavoidable especially in our situation today. We will also try to get closer with the students being their ate and kuya in hopes that by the end of all the weeks, we would be able to have created a wonderful bond with one another. God is asking for us to be more playful and caring tutors as we believe that it is in the students’ best interest to learn with a smile on their faces. This way we can keep our learning environment exciting and productive not only for the kids but also for the tutors.

TD SESSION THREE TULONG DUNONG SESSION 3. LESSON 2

The third TD session with the kids felt more comfortable not only to us but also to the kids since we were already familiar with each other. As usual, the session starts with a prayer and 30 seconds of silence so the students can properly prepare themselves before we start the lesson. Today, we started off the session with an English lesson about Analyzing elements used in print, non-print, and digital materials. We started the lesson with a “Guess the Picture” to introduce some terms to the kids. The lesson continued with an in-depth explanation of terminologies and differences of the different media (print, nonprint, and digital). Throughout the lesson, kids are reminded that if they find themselves confused about a topic or term they may ask questions. After the kids are familiar with the terms and differences of media, their skills are tested with a game of true or false and Kahoot. Both activities test their knowledge and skill of differentiating the different types of media. After the English lesson, we proceeded to Math after a short interval to give the kids a bit of time to rest. The Math lesson was about Multiplying Fractions. The first half of the lesson was all about teaching the kids how to multiply fractions in the most efficient way and the second half tested the kids’ skills in multiplying fractions. This was done by a set of questions and problems to answer as a short activity for the session. The kids answered actively in the chatbox. After the Math lesson was done the session closed with a prayer before saying goodbye to the kids.

Seeing our kids get more comfortable with us took some weight off our shoulders. Although some of the kids are still fairly quiet or shy than the others. They were also more engaged and would participate and recite during the lessons. This made us realize that we have also made a bond with our TD kids and we were thankful that they view us not only as their tutors but also their Ate and Kuya. Their constant participation motivates us to do better in the following sessions. It is also a reminder for us that God gave us this opportunity not only to teach but also to learn from them. As the third TD session ends, we are both more motivated to do better for the next session so that we may leave valuable lessons to our TD kids. We also aim to make our future TD session more engaging and fun since we noticed that the kids like the fun but educational type of learning/lesson. As mentioned previously, some kids are still not very open and can sometimes be overshadowed by others. So we will try our best to let them shine too without having to put pressure on them so that they can also participate and have fun during sessions.

TD SESSION FOUR TULONG DUNONG SESSION 4. LESSON 3

The fourth TD session (Week 3) was pretty smooth sailing. We started off with our prayer and settled greetings. For a change of pace, we started with Math instead of English. Leading them off with a music video on Dividing Fractions, we proceeded with the lesson. As the kids were settling themselves, we had a discussion on different parts to note on dividing a fraction. This included When to divide a fraction, How to divide different types of fractions and examples in between. The examples helped us observe whether the kids were still engaged and whether they still understood the lesson. After all this, we had the kids do some drills under a time limit. Some of the kids had difficulty but took their time. 2 of the kids were able to finish around a similar time. After the time limit has passed, we provided the kids with a google drive to put their answers in. We asked them to take a screenshot of their work and to upload it as it would signal the math portion ending. After that, we moved on to the English portion as we discussed identifying real or make believe, fact, or non fact images. We started it off by giving the kids a word search in order for them to find all the words they could under a given time limit. After this, a short discussion on whether something was factual or makebelieve. We’d ask ourselves factors such as whether it was realistic, possible and legitimate in order to find out. We also discussed fictional and non-fact aspects to further elaborate on the topic. We ended English with a small activity portion to observe whether or not the students understood the lesson. After this, we ended with a closing prayer and said goodbye to our students, wishing them a wonderful lunch.

Although there wasn’t much energy coming out of this session, we believe that it was because we were getting comfortable with one another and lessons were much easier to come by. We realized that we were getting closer as a class and that we were able to slowly accomplish one of our goals as TD tutors. It made us feel calm and secure during the session, enabling us to teach with ease. We saw God in the kids as it felt like each of their responses was founded in laughter and love and that we were both able to put a smile on all our faces. Ending the session with all this, we felt content with oneself and overflowing joy that another TD session was well met. With the next TD session being our last, we will make sure to keep engagement levels high as it would be our final session with the kids. We want to be able to make the most of our time with them as we all move on with our lives and the kids get a new set of tutors. God is asking us to be the kind of tutors similar to how we once started but now, more confident, more engaging and overall more loving to our students. In this manner we can spend each passing moment with the students in happiness as our farewell session comes.

TD SESSION FIVE TULONG DUNONG SESSION 5. FAREWELL TO THE KIDS!

The last session went by very quickly although our kids wanted to stay a bit after to chit-chat with us. The session began with the usual greeting and prayer led by us, the tutors. Then we continued to catch up with the kids on how their days and weeks went before proceeding to the final activities we had planned for our “farewell” session. The kids told us that they are also very tired from school works but also very excited for the session for that day. The session continued with one final game. The game was called “Guess the Gibberish”. The game allows the kids to guess the hidden word behind the gibberish. All words that they had to guess were terms that were mentioned and taught to them in the previous lessons/sessions. The kids answered livelily and quickly, guessing the word behind the gibberish in just a matter of seconds. Some kids would even compete with each other on who would guess the word first. The game time went by really quickly and so we had to give our final remarks and messages to the kids. The kids did not want to end the session just yet and asked us if they could stay until the one hour was over which we agreed to happily. We bonded with the kids, talking about shows, music, and even held a little talent show. After the hour was over, we had to say our final goodbyes. The kids said their farewells and left us “I miss you’s,” before leaving the meeting.

Seeing our kids for the last time was an emotional rollercoaster—happy that we had accomplished and finished TD but sad that we have to see them go.

Before the last session with the kids, as we were preparing the presentation slides, we realized that we did not only teach these kids but these kids have taught us many things as well. They taught us that there is fun in learning. They taught us that there is so much more to being a teacher or tutor than just teaching students, you get to know your students as individuals and be motivated and inspired by them too. By the end of the session, as we said our final goodbyes to the TD kids, we felt that they also wanted to stay. Their final “We’ll miss you’s,” left a big mark on us, it marked the end of our TD journey as tutors and we grew very much proud of our TD kids and ourselves to have finally accomplished our goal of tutoring, inspiring, and motivating the kids. As our TD journey comes to a close, we want to treasure all the previous sessions we had with our TD kids and take them as inspiration and motivation as we continue our own paths as students ourselves. Tulong Dunong gave us an opportunity to share what we know and who we are to these young and bright minds and we are very grateful to have been given this opportunity. Although this is our last TD session, we want to continue to be better as students so that we can continue to learn more so that in the future if given the chance to share our knowledge again, we would be better tutors but until then, we hope that the kids were able to learn from us and be inspired from our TD sessions together.

A LETTER OF ADVICE TO THE NEXT BATCHES OF TD ATES AND KUYAS

Hi future TD tutor! We hope that you are very excited to meet, teach, and bond with your TD kids! Now, you may be feeling nervous meeting them for the first time. Maybe you feel like you are unprepared, unqualified, and overall clueless about what is to come for you. We have been there too. We remember the nerveracking 10 minutes before we met our TD kids, it was full of excitement yet also filled with a worry for the overall experience. Yet, when we did meet the kids, our lives changed instantly. All your nervousness and worry will all melt in the sight of their smiles and their "Good morning Ate and Kuya's." Tulong Dunong is not just a program to help, but it is also a way to connect and inspire young students to be not just like us, tutors, but to become better versions of themselves. TD is an experience that you will treasure forever. We are taught to be and do more for others, and this is a chance to do just that. We like to leave you with two things to keep in mind as you start your journey as a TD tutor. First, be the best version of yourself but be true. We learned that kids do look at their Ates and Kuyas as inspiration. Tutors like us are not only tutors but also role models for the kids and what better way to inspire them than being who you are. Be kind, be understanding, and be you. Lastly, have fun. If there is one thing our TD kids have taught us is that no matter where you are or what you do, always aim to have fun. We hope that you have fun in your TD sessions and we wish you the best of luck Ates and Kuyas!
