PL AY

PERFORMANCE Performance plays a central role in your Carnegie Mellon education. From ensembles and opera productions to chamber music and recitals, you will find yourself surrounded by world-class talent. Our orchestra program runs on a professional cycle schedule. The orchestra rehearses for two weeks, performs, and then is off for two weeks. This provides time for individual practice, recital, and chamber music. Additionally, our wind ensemble program is rooted in the orchestral tradition, one musician per part, and performs a wide range of transcriptions, standards, and contemporary works from the wind repertoire. While freshman and sophomore voice majors are in choral ensembles, juniors and seniors are enrolled in Opera Workshop as their major ensemble. The School of Music produces two fully staged productions with orchestra a year as well as semi-staged opera scenes with piano. In addition, all voice majors participate in two major choral events with orchestra each year. Composers have ample opportunity to hear their music in performance. Each composer has a string quartet played by a professional ensemble and an orchestral piece played by our Philharmonic. There is a clear commitment to new music on campus and in the Pittsburgh community. Pianists have a unique set of performance opportunities depending on their interests. Students are exposed to competitions, major ensembles, collaborative piano, and chamber music as well as piano pedagogy and maintenance courses.
