THE ART OF SCIENCE

2012 annual report

opening letter

Dear Friends

One of the most exhilarating things about the world of science is its fluidity: science and ways to apply it are ever-changing. And the fluid nature of science challenges us to continually innovate. At the Museum of Science and Industry, we take our role as a champion of science and technology very seriously. We go far beyond translating or presenting science. We bring scientific concepts to life in ways that are bold, powerful and meaningful. We push ourselves to keep our world-class programs, exhibits and educational experiences fresh and directly relevant to a rapidly evolving universe. It’s what drives us and makes us one of the world’s leading science museums. It’s no secret that, as a nation, we must do a better job of preparing our children for a future where sciencebased careers are increasingly important. The Museum’s internationally recognized Center for the Advancement of Science in Education (CASE) was founded on the belief that all children deserve access to high-quality science education, not just the chance to learn facts and figures, but the chance to engage in hands-on learning, creative problem-solving and implementation, and interactive experiences that get them excited about science and help them self-identify with the subject matter … and the endless opportunities a science-related career presents. It’s an approach that we have taken at the Museum since our founding nearly 80 years ago and one that’s beginning to garner a lot of attention, even in places where you wouldn’t expect it. In the last few years, there’s been a surge in interest for incorporating art and design into science education practices. This movement advocates adding these disciplines to the STEM education model of Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago

science, technology, engineering and math to capitalize on the similarities between art and science and the opportunity to support all of the processes and skills connected to STEM learning. At the Museum of Science and Industry, we recognize that there are many connections between art and science, including research; observation; experimentation; creativity; collaboration; iteration; reflection and innovation. And our unique brand of science education reflects this. We continually seek ways to incorporate these shared processes into our exhibits and education experiences—from the subject matter we explore to the ways we teach it and how we help transform lives through the power of science and technology. 2012 was no exception. We successfully highlighted art and design throughout the Museum in many ways and were named a lead partner of The Art of Science Learning, a national initiative that uses the arts to spark creativity in science education and the development of an innovative 21st Century STEM workforce. You can read more about this exciting partnership and our creative approach to science education in this Annual Report. Last year was an artfully successful year for many other reasons. We opened new exhibitions, debuted new and expanded CASE programming and maintained our leadership position among local cultural institutions, despite a challenging economy. Among our achievements, we: • Co-developed and debuted MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition. Based on the Emmy®-nominated series that seeks to bust or confirm myths through the scientific method, this MSI exhibition was one of our most successful ever. • Explored the inventive genius of Charles Schulz in Charlie Brown and the Great Exhibit, one of seven temporary exhibitions last year. • Added the flair of Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang to our annual Christmas Around the World celebration and our high-impact holiday marketing campaign, which helped us best our local museum and zoo peers in December 2012 attendance. • Welcomed 346,000 children to the Museum on field trips, once again making us the number one destination for school groups among the city’s 11 Museums in the Park. • Conducted multiple Learning Labs on 14 different topics for a record-breaking 21,000+ students. MSI’s multi-disciplinary Learning Labs are facilitated, focused, hands-on learning experiences that align with state and national science learning standards. Just as the world of science changes, so too does MSI. And yet there are a couple of fundamentals that remain constant: our gratitude to the many corporations, individuals and organizations that support us and our commitment to inspiring and motivating our children to achieve their full potential in science, technology, engineering and medicine. Thank you for partnering with us on this exhilarating journey.

Warm regards,

David R. Mosena President and CEO

W. James Farrell Interim Chairman, Board of Trustees Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago

In Memoriam

A Tribute to a Good Friend David Speer | 1951 - 2012

Have you ever met someone for the first time and felt in that instant that you’d known them forever? That’s a common refrain used to describe meeting David Speer, former chairman of the MSI Board of Trustees and chairman and CEO of Illinois Tool Works.

didn’t matter if you were the janitor or a CEO,” said Jim Farrell, chairman of the MSI Board of Trustees and chairman and CEO of Illinois Tool Works, who hired him to work for the company. “People ended up trusting him as a result.”

Outgoing, witty and fun, David had a natural ease about him that made others feel comfortable in his presence and confident in his leadership. It’s what made him a good friend ... and a great boss. Born in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario, David displayed a gift for being likable, gracious and down-to-earth at an early age. When he was 11 years old, David sold Christmas cards door-to-door with the goal of earning enough money to buy himself a bike. He eventually sold so many cards that he bought the bike at the end of the season and returned to selling Christmas cards for several years to the delight of his repeat customers. His father’s job took the family all over the U.S., and in high school, David settled in Barrington, Ill., where he met his wife Barbara, the love of his life and mother of Blake and Sarah, their two children. After graduating from Iowa State University in 1973, he landed a few years later at Illinois Tool Works, where he would stay for the rest of his career, working his way up from a marketing manager to the company’s CEO in 2005 and chairman in 2006. His ascent did not surprise those who knew him well. ”David was open to people at every level. It

Indeed, David was a trusted and respected member of the Museum’s Board of Trustees. He joined the Board in 2006 and became board chairman in 2011, bringing with him a passion for community service and the ability to bring out the best in others. “He had a genuine interest in improving education and using his talents to help youth succeed,” said David Mosena, president and CEO of MSI. “I remember him and Barbara spending lots of time with a pair of teenage boys in the MSI Science Minors program here for a Museum event. David and Barbara loved hearing about the young men’s experiences and were captivated by the science experiments they led throughout the evening. They asked lots of questions and had a long conversation about the career paths the young men could pursue. As they spoke, David radiated the earnest warmth and kindness he was known for.” This enthusiasm and compassion is David’s greatest legacy. During his tenure as chair of the MSI Board of Trustees, David developed several long-term strategic initiatives aimed at providing children with a career pathway to science and technology that will help fulfill his mission to see young people succeed in the years ahead.

THE ART OF SCIENCE

Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago

5

The Art of Science Each year, the Museum’s Center for the Advancement of Science Education (CASE) holds a celebration to recognize the teachers, students and community organizations that have participated in CASE programming. The highlight of each CASE Celebration is a panel discussion among working scientists. In 2012, reflecting the Museum’s innovative and multi-disciplined approach to science education, the CASE Celebration panel focused on “The Art of Science.” Moderated by James Janega, Trib Nation manager at the Chicago Tribune, the panel was comprised of working scientists with eclectic backgrounds in art and science: Brian Fitzpatrick, engineering manager at Google, Inc., a software engineer who studied the classics and fine arts; Akili Lee, director of digital strategy and development at the Digital Youth Network, which provides youth with digital tools that facilitate their ability to become creators and innovators; and Rabiah Mayas, Ph.D., director of science and integrated strategies at MSI, a biochemist and part of the CASE team. Walter E. Massey, Ph.D., opened the panel with a video message addressing similarities in the ways that artists and scientists make new discoveries. Dr. Massey is the president of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a noted physicist and a member of the Museum’s Board of Trustees. Following are excerpts from his comments, edited for brevity and clarity: When I think about this topic, I think first of the similarities in the creative process that individuals go through to produce art and science. And the similar way these two modes of thinking interpret and understand the universe around us. Science is different from art. That’s true. Science tends to be focused on predictability and order, and

non-scientists often think of it only in that way ... as a linear process. They point to the scientific method and how scientists take certain steps to conduct an experiment or solve an equation, and if they don’t make any mistakes, they get the answer. They also believe that ultimately, there is an answer. That’s what Thomas Kuhn called “ordinary science,” but that’s not the way science changes or the way major breakthroughs are made. Breakthroughs are made by individuals who step back, look beyond the obvious and reinterpret the world around them. I’m in the middle of reading a book called “Einstein, Picasso: Space, Time and the Beauty That Causes Havoc.” It’s a fascinating look at the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through the lens of science. It covers the transition from classical physics to relativity and quantum mechanics and examines what a jarring experience that evolution was for the scientific community. On a parallel track, it also looks at the way art moved from representational to new forms of abstract art such as cubism, led by Picasso and others. These were both movements led by individuals who saw the same things others had seen. The world hadn’t changed around them but they interpreted it in another way and gave us new ways of appreciating and understanding it differently. While these are some of the most important similarities between art and science … they are not the only ones. Artists and scientists have different ways of understanding the world around them, but the pleasure … the joy of their creative process and of making new discoveries are very much alike.

SCIENCE HEALS MSI’s nationally recognized exhibit design team applied its special blend of science and fun to the Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. The Museum was one of more than 20 local cultural organizations invited to help create an upbeat, welcoming environment by adorning a floor of the new hospital with custom design reflecting the spirit of each contributor. After several years of planning and collaboration with hospital staff, MSI’s floor was revealed at the grand opening in June. When patients, guests and hospital staff enter the MSI floor, the 20th, for acute patients, they are greeted by its way-finding mascot: a baby chick. In the lobby, everyone is invited to play with an interactive shadow garden of butterflies and flowing sand. And throughout the floor, a dozen 3D display boxes and more than 20 original, largerthan-life graphics featuring such MSI icons as the U-505 Submarine, The Great Train Story and Farm Tech captivate all who enter. The Museum's contributions have been a big hit, with Blair Kamin, architecture critic for the Chicago Tribune, calling our floor his “favorite” in his review of the new building.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, SCIENCE! MSI’s summer high school interns gain lots of valuable skills, including the ability to work well with and engage others by facilitating science experiences with guests. But last year’s group of interns got to take those skills even further: they developed an original play inspired by the MythBusters exhibit and performed it daily for packed crowds. Entitled “Science in ACTion: Sink or Float,” this unique science theater production tapped the talents of all the interns, who served as writers, directors, performers or producers, and in a Museum first, were even asked for autographs by guests.

FAB LAB FUN The Wanger Family Fab Lab continues to expand, with new workshops for guests, and a higher profile among Chicago’s maker community: diverse folks that bring a do-it-yourself (DIY) mindset to ideas, materials, and technology. Last year, the Fab Lab debuted a Sticker Workshop that introduces younger guests to the science of personal fabrication and teaches them how to use Fab Lab tools to design and make their own vinyl sticker. In total, more than 200 different Fab Lab workshops were conducted for nearly 2,500 guests. In 2012, the Fab Lab was also used extensively by participants in MSI’s Science Minors and Science Achievers youth development programs. They created a musical tone sequencer called a “monome;” a 3D printed aliens versus humans checker set; and a large, 4-foot diameter hydroponics wheel complete with motor and computer controls and an LED light, that was exhibited in Fast Forward. Finally, the Fab Lab attracted more visibility outside Museum walls by hosting a meeting of influential leaders in the local Maker movement and presenting “roadshows” at several events throughout Chicagoland.

summer brain games Did you know that students can lose one to three months’ worth of critical learning during summer vacation? To help students avoid seasonal “brain drain,” the Museum debuted “Summer Brain Games,” a wildly popular, eight-week program that encourages families to learn about science in fun, easy, creative ways using everyday items to conduct athome experiments. Each of the weekly activities relies heavily on arts and crafts to teach science concepts, such as building a solar oven to learn about solar energy and launching a water balloon catapult to introduce engineering principles. Every week, MSI’s CASE staff releases videos with tips on how to conduct each activity and related science facts. More than 3,300 participants from Chicago and around the world participated in the inaugural “Summer Brain Games.” The program’s end-of-term contest even awarded one lucky family a back-to-school tech package complete with an iPad and laptop.

the art of science learning The Art of Science Learning (ASL) is a national project that integrates arts-based learning (ABL) techniques into a science innovation training curriculum with the goal of improving the innovative and creative skills of STEM learners and professionals. In 2012, based on our strengths in science education and research and wealth of resources, MSI was invited to be one of only three national partners on a $2.6 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant and to host an Incubator for Innovation. We spent the latter part of the year planning and completing initial project work for the MSI Incubator’s innovation challenge “Urban Nutrition - Scarcity in the Midst of Plenty,” slated for execution in 2014. As part of this project-based challenge, teams of youth, educators and business professionals will spend a year learning the innovation curriculum and applying ABL techniques to develop potential solutions to this critical community issue. Innovative STEM learning programs will also be created by the MSI Incubator teams. At the conclusion of the challenge, experimental and ethnographic research will assess the extent to and ways in which the training successfully integrated artistic practices into the innovation process. Treasurer's Report August 2013

Everyone at the Museum of Science and Industry can be proud of our performance in 2012. We ended the year with balanced revenue and expenses and our bottom-line was bolstered by the extraordinary support of our donors and the success of our temporary exhibitions. Conscientious expenditures and a stabilized endowment further contributed to a breakeven year that fully supported our expanding educational impact throughout the region. Overall attendance in 2012 was steady at 1.4 million visitors and attendance for our signature temporary offering, MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition, exceeded budgeted estimates by an astounding 21 percent. As in previous years, MSI continued to dominate the holiday landscape in Chicago with our highlysuccessful citywide marketing campaign celebrating Charlie Brown and the Great Exhibit. This innovative showcase of inventive genius drove high attendance in the late winter months, helping us outpace our Chicago museum and zoo peers in December attendance by a margin of 17 percent. For the fourth year in a row, MSI was the premier field trip destination for students in Chicago, leading the 11 Museums in the Parks in school group attendance with more than 346,000 visitors. A record number of students (more than 21,000) explored science topics in greater depth during our expanding roster of Learning Labs, including Live … from the Heart and Mission to Mars. And MSI’s web presence continues to be as strong as ever with more than five million hits in 2012, once again leading Chicago’s museums in online traffic. Our fundraising efforts were also incredibly successful. In fact, the 2012 Columbian Ball broke all records and raised $2.2 million, resulting in our best Annual Fund performance ever. With more than $5.5 million in unrestricted giving total, these funds ensure the strength of MSI’s daily programs and operations and are instrumental to maintaining MSI’s fiscal health during a volatile economic climate. Thanks to the strong conclusion of the 2012 fiscal year, MSI has laid the solid foundation for an exciting 2013 that will further deliver on our vision to inspire and motivate our children to achieve their full potential in the fields of science, technology, medicine and engineering.
