A Beer Museum in Cork

Location: North Main Street, Cork, Ireland Year 3 [2015]

The site is located between two streets North main street and Grattan Street. North main street has been given this name because during the 17th century it was the main road for trading. Nowadays, this road is not the main spine of the city. Cork council decided to give life to this street again by developing the lowest part of South Main street (see map). I chose this specific site because I wanted to redevelop the area and make the street the central spine of the city. Grattan street mostly consists of residential buildings so I want the entrance of my building to face main street in order to keep Grattan street more quite and private. The site itself is abandoned at the moment and mostly used as a parking. After all it is a good location for a redevelopment since it is close to Cork vision centre and it is surrounded by significant landmarks of the city.

In order to design a brewery and a beer museum i think it is necessary to explore beer and its making. Making beer is a quite simple process that consists of several stages. It takes time to make beer and it takes even more time to perfect the taste especially if you want to produce homede beer. The concept behind my design is based on how beer is made, since beer passes through several stages in order to be ready to consume the visitors of this museum wll go through several stages until they reach the point of actually tasting and seeing the product. The main stages of brewing is Mashing, Frementation, Aging and bottling. The equvalent process for the visitors will be as follows - Getting to know what you will see - Learning facts - Experience reality - Relax and enjoy the result. This process will be translated into spaces.

Mashing Getting to know what you will see

The current site was a parking which was accessible only by a narrow path facing North Main street and from Grattan street. It was also surrounded by a wall which is now removed creating easier access from both streets. The narrow path is no longer narrow and both the path and the building welcomes you into the building. The building has three ntrances, the main entrance the brewery entrance and the restuaran entrance which will be open during night when the building will be closed. Behind it there is a parking lot which is going to be used for visitors, staff and suppliying the building. Therefore the building is going to be accessible by both visitors and staff through the two streets ( as shown in the site plan). 13

First floor is completely dedicated to the educational side of beer making. Entering the exhibition (starting from left) visitors go through a timelined - formed exhibition where they learn interesting facts about beer’s history. Moving on the space itself drives the visitor through the “laboratory” exhibition which cover the scientific aspect of beer making.

17

The ground floor works as an entrance to all of the facilities that the building offers. The atrium welcomes people into the building. Moreover following the path that the building creates towards the side entrance you can access the brewery. The brewery is open to public and allows the visitor to have the unique experience to explore the beer making in real life and taste beer straight out of the barrel.

1914 Event Space Form Location: Huddersfield Train station Year 3 [2014]

The task for this project was to design a temporary or permanent structure/installation/pavilion which celebrates the events of 1914. We have been given different topics and facts that are based and influenced by the year “1914” and how everything was affected by the WW1 (100 years anniversary) Another part of the brief was to pick a “forgotten space” in the centre of Huddersfield and place the event there to change the landscape and the movement. In that way people will be informed in the best way possible about the concept and the theory of each event.

23

Insipration + Concept Expressionism combined with glass architecture. Art and architecture movements influenced in some way by the WW1, bloomed during 1914. Many expressionists appeared during this year and a lot of paintings marked the movement of expressionism. My source of inspiration is Egon Schiele’s portrait of Friederike Maria Beer, Glasshaus Pavilion by Bruno Taut and the poems written by Paul Scheerbart that talk about glass architecture and the main influence of Bruno Taut. The colour palette of the painting has vibrant colours, so I have picked the basic dominant colours and combined them with the theories about glass architecture as described in Scheerbart’s Work

Experimenting with colour and light is a combination that makes you feel the warmth of the materiality when the light is present. The light, and in that case the natural light will create a natural painting with the contribution of the design. The portrait of Friderike Maria Beer by Egon Schiele fits in the site perfectly, the movement and the flow is very similar. The pavilion will be as light as the feeling of glass and as warm as the daylight reflection. On site it will not change the current circulation dramatically and it will bring more people in the lost and forgotten square.

25

Site Plan

During daylight the pavilion will behave as an interactive painting shaped on the ground. The sunlight and the coloured Plexiglas that are embraced by the metal structure will give movement to the pavilion. During night time when the sun is gone, artificial lighting will take over in order to create shadows and a smaller projection room will project patterns based on Schiele’s work.

27

The main event will be in the small square and there is going to be an exhibition about the pavilion telling its story and educate the people about art movements and expressionism. The whole installation will be spreaded throughout the train station square so It will lead to the main event.

Film + Photography

Location: Holmfirth, Bus station Year 2 [2014]

After the urban study we did as groups in Holmfirth we had to design a building and recreate the landscape of our chosen site. The usage of the building is based on what people said that they think their town needed. I designed a film and photography academy. This building will create opportunities and attract younger people in the area. Moreover, based on the fact that Holmfirth has a “film history” (The last of summer wine). It would be a good idea continuing this “tradition” by adding this film and photography academy.

35

Concept “A picture is worth a thousand words My conceptual approach was based on the human face and figure because an individual is one of the most important elements in films and pictures.

Wider and renewed bridges The building will be consisted of two separate parts: the academy + the cinema There is an existing brick wall which is removed and replaced with a lighter wall allowing people to have views towards the river The roof will emerge from the ground allowing people to walk up the roof
