CHRISTOPHER ASHLEY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR When La Jolla Playhouse re-opened its doors in 1983, its season consisted of three summer shows performed in the Mandell Weiss Theatre. Now, thirty years — and three additional performance spaces — later, the Playhouse provides a wide array of year-round programming, from musicals to new works to re-imagined classics. This year alone, in addition to our six subscription shows, the Playhouse offers our Performance Outreach Program (POP) Tour for young audiences; our DNA New Work Series; shows from our new Resident Theatre Company, Teatro Máscara Mágica; special events like our limited run of Neva; and our hit Without Walls show Accomplice (which extended three times during its run in Little Italy). And from October 3-6, we will present the Without Walls Festival — turning the grounds of the Playhouse and UC San Diego into a giant performance space in which audiences can experience over twenty site-specific works. Into this eclectic mix, we now welcome back Chicago’s famed comedy troupe, The Second City. Fresh off two successful stints in our cabaret setting, The Second City has been hard at work creating a show for and about San Diego. This past spring, their writers spent several days immersing themselves in everything our town has to offer, from its neighborhoods to its beaches to its culture, politics, sports and institutions. Since then, they’ve been reading our various media outlets to keep abreast of the constantly-shifting terrain of San Diego’s current events. Now, like seals returning to the Children’s Pool for pupping season, The Second City arrives in La Jolla for their newest show, The Good, the Bad and the I-5. Thanks for joining us. Enjoy the show!
