…an Economic Summit Held in Dana Point?

THE LATEST: The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce was one of six area chambers to host the summit to discuss the state of the local business community. A panel of experts spoke at the breakfast meeting June 17 at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort and Spa. Key note speaker Edward Leamer, Director of the UCLA/Anderson Forecast said that the current recession has been very similar to many of the past (1948, ’57, ’60, ’69, ’73 and ’81 for example) with respect to the downward turn and continued 3 percent growth of the Gross Domestic Product—the difference this time being the failure of the economy to recover within the traditionally seen two-year cycle. “We saw some recovery in Quarter 2 of 2010, but the economy has been idling since then,” said Leamer. Leamer predicts that although the GDP will grow at the “normal” 3-percent rate through 2013, the amount and areas of growth will not be adequate to kick start real recovery. Topping his list of reasons for the stalled recovery is the permanent displacement of jobs. “I don’t think the downturn has changed the fundamental spirit of our economy, however,” said Leamer as he offered four possible “what comes next?” scenarios for the next couple years. According to Leamer the possibilities include a 6-percent rapid recovery, no recovery and normal 3-percent growth, “PIMCO new normal” at 2-percent growth or a double dip followed by 2-percent growth. The most likely scenario, he said, is no recovery and 3-percent growth. Lucy Dunn, President and CEO of the Orange County Business Council said she believes that key to recovery will be a Dana Point Times June 24–30, 2011

reliance on our state’s historic use of innovation and that the $5 billion in transportation projects now in the planning stages will help jump start the economy. “More and more we will have to rely on our own creative and alternative ways to fund these projects,” she said. Rancho Mission Viejo Senior Vice President of Governmental Relations and corporate Communications Dan Kelly said he believes the worst is behind us and he expects to see new home construction help bring the county out of the recession beginning in 2013. John Severini, President of the California Travel Association called travel and tourism one of the biggest drivers of the Orange County economy and said that his organization will continue to be “strong proponents of bills that drive the business economy and improve the “California brand.” He also pointed out that Leamer’s comment regarding exports is good news for the travel and tourism industry because of its dependence on international travel. WHAT’S NEXT: Leamer offered a prediction that the GDP component most likely to be the “locomotive” for recovery will be exports and that U.S. schools need to make changes with regard to educating students for a much different future. “We need strong export growth,” he said. “The country is moving from an industrial to a post industrial economy and our high schools’ curriculum needs to reflect that. THE LATEST: Dana Point City Council on June 13 voted unanimously to oppose the California Citizens Redistricting Commission’s proposed plan for redistricting State

Assembly and Senate seats in Orange County. The plan would create two Assembly districts—an Orange County coastal area reaching from the Dana Point Headlands north to Seal Beach and another beginning at the Headlands and stretching south to include the areas commonly known as South Orange County. The two Senate districts the plan would create would see one encompassing the North Orange County coastal area along with central and north inland areas and another that would include South Orange County and North San Diego County. The two plans would effectively divide the City of Dana Point in two, a move that Councilman Bill Brough called “ridiculous” for such a small city. The city’s letter to the commission reads, in part, “The DPCC strongly feels that our entire city should be grouped with other south Orange County cities for state Senate and Assembly purposes because of the common issues these cities face as well as the strong working relationships and cooperative arrangements they have developed over many, many years. Shared issues include, but are by no means limited to, ocean water quality, regional transportation at both the local (Orange County Transportation Authority) and state (Caltrans) levels, regional land use planning and affordable housing.” The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors on June 21 voted to support the City Council’s resolution to object

the first draft of proposed district lines. WHAT’S NEXT: The deadline to submit written public testimony to the commission regarding the first round draft maps is this Friday, June 24.Input can be submitted via email to votersfirstact@crc.ca.gov or by fax to 916.651.5711. …A Smoother Ride on Freeway?

THE LATEST: South Orange County motorists on the San Diego Freeway will find a safer and smoother ride after a $16 million project to resurface the lanes between Coast Highway and Oso Creek. The California Transportation Commission on Thursday allocated $825 million in new funding to 92 highway, transit, and rail projects statewide. The allocations included nearly $9 million from Proposition 1B, a 2006 voter-approved transportation bond. To (Cont. on page 4) www.danapointtimes.com

The road resurfacing, which will cover 82 lane miles, was the only Orange County project included in the list. In a statement announcing the projects, Caltrans Acting Director Malcolm Dougherty said the work will have a dual impact: making roads better and providing jobs. “From one end of the state to the other, transportation projects are providing jobs and improving mobility for people and businesses in California,” Dougherty said. …No Body Murder Conviction?

THE LATEST: Despite never having recovered a body, an Orange County Court on Tuesday convicted a Virginia man of murdering an investor to cover up stealing nearly $1 million from him between 2004

and 2008 by promising big returns on fraudulent investments. A jury found Gary A. Shawkey, 47, of Mechanicsville, VA, guilty of one felony count of special circumstances murder for financial gain, one felony count of grand theft and a sentencing enhancement for stealing in excess of $200,000 said a news release from the Orange County District Attorney’s office. Shawkey is accused of luring 71-yearold victim Robert Vendrick, of Phoenix, AZ on to his boat and leaving Dana Point Harbor on February 16, 2008 en route to San Clemente Island for what Shawkey told Vendrick was a meeting to solidify that new “lucrative investment deal” with the Federal Government for the development of top-secret computer software. A deal that Shawkey said would yield $1.2 million. The DA’s report said, in part, that “As the victim became reluctant to continue investing money with Shawkey, the defendant persuaded Vendrick to invest in a new venture” to the tune of $100,000, then murdered him and threw his body into the ocean. Video footage—captured by a camera atop the harbor building that houses Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari—presented in court showed Shawkey and Vendrick boarding a boat together and departing out of Dana Point Harbor on February 16, 2008. According to Deputy

District Attorney Ebrahim Baytieh, that was the last time Vendrick was seen or heard from. Public Defender Brian Waite told the jury that shortly after departing on the boat, Vendrick told Shawkey he was uncomfortable about making the trip on rough waters in such a small craft and asked to be dropped off at the Dana Wharf docks near Turk’s Restaurant so he could make the trip by himself on the Catalina Express and meet Shawkey on Catalina Island later. Waite also said that without a body there is no proof that Vendrick is even dead and added that his client had seen him alive in Mexico following his disappearance. WHAT’S NEXT: Shawkey faces a maximum sentence of life in state prison without the possibility of parole. … Toll Road Rate Increases?

THE LATEST: It will cost more to ride the

toll roads under the 2012 budgets approved this month by the Transportation Corridor Agencies directors. For the first time, a fractional increase was included in FasTrak transactions, as the board—including Dana Point Councilwoman Lisa Bartlett—increased FasTrak rates 5 percent and added 25 cents to cash transactions. The increases apply to both the San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor (73) and the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor. Driving the entire length of the 73, between San Juan Capistrano and Newport Beach, would now cost $5.75 at peak traffic times and $5 for FasTrak users. Directors also included $18.3 million in the 2012 budget to continue the effort to extend the Foothill south from Oso Road in Rancho Santa Margarita to the San Diego Freeway south of San Clemente. Toll road officials said traffic on the 73 dipped slightly in May 2011 compared to May 2010. Average weekday transactions for May were 78,882, a 1.4 percent decrease. That’s also off from peak traffic in 2007, but the declines have leveled off, officials said. WHAT’S NEXT: The increases take effect on July 1. More Talk about North Beach North Beach returns to the General Plan Advisory Committee for further discussion despite city staff’s recommendation against it. At the City Council’s request, the committee, known as the GPAC, weighed in on the Triangle site at North Beach last month. The group spent nearly three hours discussing the future of the parking area that forms a triangle and answering only two of the five proposed questions. Since then, the city’s consultant hired to assist with the GPAC wrote a memo saying more planning needs to happen before the committee revisits the topic. Director of Community Development Jim Holloway expressed concern at Tuesday night’s meeting that the one parcel was being singled out rather than viewed in the context of the entire General Plan, which serves as something of a roadmap for the city. “That’s not good planning in my opinion,” he told the council. Nevertheless, Mayor Lori Donchak asked the committee to finish its discussion in a “60-minute speed dating sort of way.” “It’s just kind of a temperature check,” she said. The City Council wants the advisory committee to finish answering the final two questions: What shall occur at the triangle site? What are the priorities for revitalization at North Beach? Where in the list of the city’s other priorities should the area lie? The GPAC will convene another meeting to finish its discussion of North Beach, but the date has not been finalized. Staffing at New Aquatics Center Going private may not always better when it comes to city operations. The City Council voted 5-0 Tuesday night to approve a plan that would keep operations of the aquatics center at the underconstruction La Pata-Vista Hermosa Sports Park in-house rather than paying an outside operator.

Despite prevailing wisdom that privatizing is less costly, an analysis by city staff showed that a publicly run pool operation better fit the city’s budget and philosophy, said Parks Director Sharon Heider to the City Council Tuesday night. Heider said the city received proposals from the YMCA and recreation asset management company KemperSports, which was quickly eliminated because its costs were higher from the get-go than the city’s. After the analysis, Heider eventually ruled out the YMCA because its board is drawn from all over Orange County and would not be focused on San Clemente. The YMCA would also start another recreational swim team taking more pool time, and would make its programs a priority. The staff report said a city-run program can “more effectively and efficiently plan the aquatics programming in San Clemente.” The city estimated the total operational costs at $495,155 and revenue at $341,598 for the six months of operation in fiscal 2012, according to the staff report. —SNG

Talks of Sex Offender Ban at City Parks Registered sex offenders could be banned from San Juan Capistrano parks, as the City Council on Tuesday discussed joining a growing list of Orange County governments enacting the prohibition. The county first banned registered sex offenders from parks—ranging from regional campgrounds to Dana Point Harbor—in April. Westminster has moved ahead with the law, as has Rancho Santa Margarita. Irvine passed an ordinance that applies only to sex offenders who committed a crime against a child. Under the county ordinance, violators may be punished with up to six months in jail and/or a $500 fine. Mayor Sam Allevato, a retired police officer, asked the council consider the ordinance, to give authorities another tool, he said. The council will formally discuss an ordinance at an upcoming meeting. —Jonathan Volzke

Both are retired teachers and once hosted a Los Angeles radio program, “The Travel Show.” They spend part of their year traveling on cruise ships delivering lectures on 32 different topics, including the six they’ll present at the Institute. The McMenamins are also actors, and assume the role of real life characters for some of their presentations. For example, Milt becomes the character of Clerk, first in command to British explorer James Cook, when he tells the story of Cook’s explorations of Pacific Islands. Getting Ready for Summertime Fun e’ve had some sneak peaks of hot, summer days between the typical May grays that have heralded the annual excitement for the beginnings of Lisa Zawaski summer. Here are some reminders of programs to protect your health and the environment as we gear up for summertime time. ELECTRIC LAWN MOWER EXCHANGE Interested in upgrading your old gas powered lawn mower for an electric one? South Coast Air Quality Management District’s (AQMD) offers AQMD residents, which includes Dana Point residents, an opportunity to help clean the air by exchanging an old, operable gasoline-powered lawn mower and purchasing a new electric lawnmower. Pre-registration is required. There are five models to choose from, with your cost being $100, $160 or $230 depending upon the model. The closest exchange event is scheduled in Anaheim for July 23. Please see the link for more details on the program: www. aqmd.gov/tao/lawnmower.html. GREEN POOLS AND PONDING WATER When it comes to pools, “being green” is not good. Green, unmaintained pool water and other locations of ponding water provide the ideal habitat for mosquito breeding. For your protection, eliminate potential water holding containers such as old tires, cans, and bottles and other various containers that may be on your property. Water in bird baths, ornamental pools, flower pots and children’s wading pools should be changed at least once a week. Even a few tablespoons of water are enough for breeding. If you are aware of a green pool or observe ponding water, please contact the Orange County Vector Control District at 949.654.2421 or check out www.ocvcd. org for more information. That’s about $700 million in annual energy cost savings and prevents greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the emissions of about 800,000 cars per year. Unfortunately, CFL bulbs contain mercury and cannot be disposed of in your regular trash. I walked Heritage Park on Father’s Day and was amazed that no one thought about just moving the grandstand further down the slope. It could be in front of the dog run thus doubling the audience space. It would be like the Hollywood Bowl. The folks that like their music a bit more quiet could sit in the back and those that want to rock out, can go up front. Problem solved! There is more than one way to address a problem than just moving it further north to Sea Terrace Park. If people want Heritage

Park to remain the main venue, speak up or it won’t happen. I am starting a petition addressing this and will be all over town. Who wants to help? I will be at Ralph’s, the harbor, etc. Who at Parks and Recreation do we talk to? What was their thought process? I’d like to talk to this person. The Universal Truths of Graduation Top grad delivers commencement speech, urges students to leave mistakes in the past and focus on the future BY DEVIN ROY VALENCIANO, DANA HILLS HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLAR OF SCHOLARS

o I ﬁgured I could take two possible approaches to this speech. I could try to be funny, crack a couple Rebecca Black jokes, maybe talk about Charlie Sheen’s tiger blood and wrap up with a couple cheesy lines to describe the hilarity that ensued during our four years at Dana. Or I could take a more serious approach and try my shot at being inspirational, using my few minutes to try to affect at least one student in this audience. I decided to stick mostly with latter, with hopefully a few funny moments sprinkled in. Since I followed a mostly academic track during high school, it’s easy for me to write a speech that caters to those with experiences similar to mine. Instead, I want to talk about the universal truths of this graduation—the facts that apply to all of us, no matter what color we’re graduating in, how many clubs we ran, or what sports we played. When we came to Dana, let’s face it—we were all snotty freshmen, still ridiculously insecure and unsure about our future position in this high school. But most of us came to an amazing realization—high school was a place where each student could ﬁnd their own niche, full of other students with similar interests and suddenly we grew out of our awkward middle school shells. Suddenly it

wasn’t lame to want to act in musicals; suddenly enjoying a class wasn’t the irreversible mark of a nerd and suddenly we all got a glimpse of who we may become in the future. So we wrote the essays, read the books, did the outlines and took countless tests. We ran races, won matches and dominated the big games. We felt the most amazing highs and plummeted to the most amazing lows. We lost ﬁrst loves, we brewed in melodrama and

we all felt a little like the Catcher in the Rye at some point. But we beat those cursed hormones in the end. We passed our classes and now here we sit—ready to graduate. Some of you may be heading college, others may be going to work, others may enter the service, and still others may take some time off to plan their next move. It doesn’t matter. One fact is still true about everyone sitting on this ﬁeld; this is possibly the most pivotal moment of our lives, where we can leave our mistakes in the dust and take on the world with a fresh start. Any single person in this class can do any single thing they desire if they only stop in this moment—focus on their peers, their families and themselves—and realize that if they commit themselves to hard work, this moment can truly be anything. I believe this to be an absolute truth, while it may come easier to some than to others. But don’t let the world sit on you, and don’t give yourself excuses not to take advantage of this golden opportunity. The world doesn’t run on GPAs, the world doesn’t care about National Honor Society, and the world is not dressed in white. Go, my fellow warriors, and conquer wherever life leads you. And everyone, take a moment to look to your family and thank them for putting up with a rotten teenager. Thank you Mom, Dad, Mike and Salil, for being there even when I didn’t want you to be. I love you all. And thank you, Dana Hills Class of 2011, for allowing me to speak to you today. •

Historical Society BBQ at Doheny

Looking for a family-friendly mid-week outing? How does dinner al fresco at the beach sound? The public is invited to join in a food and fun celebration of the leaders of the future at the Dana Point Historical Society annual BBQ at Doheny State Beach, 25300 Dana Point Harbor Drive on Wednesday, June 29. The event will be held at picnic area ‘A.’ The event will honor the Historical Society’s class of 2011 $1,000 scholarship recipients, Alexandria Anderson and Ellen Lomonico—both Dana Hills High School grads. This is an important event for the Historical Society, said President Carlos N. Olvera. “We do it because we are the largest nonprofit in Dana Point that is active in the community—for the community,” he said. “Also, our students are our future members who will continue to preserve and display the history of Dana Point.” The event begins at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes tri tip steak, chili, coleslaw, salad and all accompaniments. If you’re not growing and changing and getting creative with your classic songs over time, he says, “then you’re not a band, you’ve become a jukebox.” And every so often, to remind oneself that making music is still the invigorating joy it’s always been, it’s a great idea to take a look back at the music writer’s classic songs, as Alexakis does on Everclear’s 429 Records debut, In A Different Light. We caught up with Alexakis on his thoughts about the upcoming show. What was the impetus for an acoustic set? How does that fit in with the Coach House as a venue? In the past, I’ve always performed solo acoustic sets at the beginning of a new album cycle to showcase the new material I was recording at the time, but in the past few years I’ve been performing solo acoustic concerts all around the country because it stretches me as an artist. What has influenced your evolving musical style over the years? Did your daughters play a significant role as many kids do with their musician parents? I think living life has been the main thing to influence me in my writing ... and both of my daughters are a part of that for sure ... I think learning and growing and learning how to express my experiences as well as constantly trying to improve my craft as a songwriter has helped me. What’s next with regards to Everclear? A 2011 Look at Internet Dating for Seniors new dating website specifically for singles over 50 is now active. Before describing it, let me mention these cardinal rules of Internet dating: • Never lend or send money to anyone you’ve ON LIFE AND LOVE AFTER 50 never met. By Tom Blake • Trust your instincts. If someone seems too good to be true, that’s exactly the case. • You cannot fall in love with a person you’ve never met. These rules apply to all Internet dating sites, including the one I am writing about today, which is called OurTime.com. It’s not an entirely new site. The company’s press release states: “OurTime.com was created by combining the membership of SeniorPeopleMeet. com and SeniorsMeet.com. With more than one million active members, OurTime. com is now the largest online community catering to singles over 50.” OurTime.com is owned by the same company that owns Match.com. I interviewed Dr. Terri Orbuch, OurTime’s dating and relationship expert. I was impressed with her dating knowledge and her reassurances about the site’s safety. Dr. Orbuch said, “OurTimes’s highest priority is member safety. We have safety experts constantly patrolling the site. Internet dating is no safer or less safe than meeting strangers in other ways.” Do her words guarantee singles won’t encounter scammers on OurTime.com? Of course not. This week, a woman named Judie emailed me about a 73-year-old friend of hers who met a man on the former Seniorpeoplemeet.com who claimed to be an American working in Malaysia. His story didn’t add up. Eventually, he asked the woman for money.

Boomer believes that old age doesn’t begin until age 72, according to a 2009 Pew Research survey, not age 65.” Hooray for that. While Internet dating has its risks, it also has its rewards. It provides an easy way for singles to test the waters and to not have to wait for a telephone call to interact with potential mates. Women can be assertive. Plus, singles can talk with more than one potential mate in a matter of minutes. They can’t do that when they’re out on a date with one person. The OurTime website link: www.OurTime.com. Internet dating is a double-edged sword. Singles dramatically increase their chances of meeting a mate because these sites have members throughout the world. But, meeting someone who lives far away often results in a long-distance relationship. These relationships can work out, but there are many added challenges to them. Dr. Orbuch said, “Before getting involved in a long-distance relationship, each person must communicate his or her expectations about who would move and who wouldn’t. If neither is willing or

unable to move, it’s hard to have much of a relationship, particularly if they’d like to be together regularly.” Dr. Orbuch also stressed that singles should carefully review the safety tips and dating guidelines on the OurTime. com website before beginning the search for a mate. I checked those pages and agree with her. According to the OurTime press release, approximately 65 percent of their users have been divorced and 25 percent widowed. And now for the best news for seniors, the press release also stated: “The typical

hough the dust settled early on their post-season efforts, the Dana Hills High School’s varsity girls’ basketball team topped off their season as big winners in an entirely different category. The team was honored by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) with the coveted CIF Academic Award during a pre-game ceremony at Angel Stadium of Anaheim at the Angels vs. Chicago White Sox game on May 9. Cumulatively, the team finished with a 3.775 grade point average–the highest of any girl’s varsity basketball team in the Southern Section.

As academic champions for large schools over 1501 students the Lady Dolphins beat out North Torrance High School who finished second with a team average of 3.627 and Foothill High School who finished third with a 3.620. Mesa Grande Academy from Calimesa finished first in the small school category with 1500 students or less with a 3.901 GPA team average. “To win a CIF Academic Award is a huge accomplishment for a program and a school,” Dana Hills co-athletic director Matt Reid said. “There are 581 schools in the Southern Section of CIF, so to win this award says a lot about our girls. As a team, they also came in second place for the award last year, which is also a big accomplishment.” All six of the team’s graduating seniors are off to play for various universities. Players can look forward to improving their baseball skills while being instructed and evaluated by the Dana Hills High School baseball coaching staff, led by head coach Tom Faris. Those who opt to participate will also receive a camp Tshirt along with personalized instruction to further develop fundamental baseball skills. The camp includes learning new drills, challenges and true baseball etiquette. It is asked that those who sign up for camp bring their baseball gear and baseball clothes including a glove, hat, bat, helmet and water. Grom of the WEEK David Levy Age: 13, Marco Forster Middle School David Levy first jumped onto a surfboard at the age of 6 and hasn’t looked back since. He enjoys both surfing and bodyboarding but says that his serious training is devoted to longboarding. David intends to continue surfing for the Marco Forster Middle School surf team next year and will focus on continuing to improve in hopes of making the Dana Hills High team the following year as a freshman. “David is a really good solid surfer who keeps improving,” said Coach Carol Weinhardt. “His style is shaping up to be pretty progressive and I can definitely see him being one of the team leaders next year.” David Levy. He is a straight ‘A’ honor student whose name has been a fixture on the Superintendent’s Honor Roll in every quarter of his school career so far. David likes English class, enjoys writing and is definitely college-bound. He intends to keep up his grades and hopes to get into a university that will keep him close to the ocean he loves. Chosen honorees are immortalized by placing their hand and footprints in cement at the foot of the Duke Kahanamoku statue on the corner of PCH and Main in Huntington Beach. The ceremony is set to take place during the US Open of Surfing on August 5 at 10 a.m. This year’s induction ceremony will honor Hawaiian waterman George Downing. Downing has made an indelible impression in the surfing world as a big wave pioneer, Waikiki beachboy, board shaper, contest director and mentor to fellow surfers.

Surfing Walk of Fame Declares Honorees The Surfing Walk of Fame induction ceremony is set for August 4 on the corner of PCH and Main in Huntington Beach outside of Jack’s Surfboards at 10 a.m. Seven will be placing their hand and footprints in cement on the Walk of Fame. BOARD SHORTS San Clemente Schools Reign at NSSA Nationals Surf teams from San Clemente High and Shorecliffs Middle Schools dominated at the 2011 NSSA National Interscholastic Championships, June 16 to 18 at Salt Creek Beach. The teams took their 11th and ninth national titles, respectively. San Clemente commanded the team competition with 111 points to runner-up Edison with 103. Five SCHS surfers made podium appearances in varsity competition. The Men’s Shortboard division saw Breyden Taylor in first, Trevor Thornton fifth and Tanner Rozunko sixth. Longboarder Eli Gillis took the fifth spot and Emmy Lombard came in sixth in Womens Shortboard. Shorecliffs went way out in front of second place Dwyer, 136 to 74. Middle school team competition also saw Marco Forster in fourth, Shorecliffs ‘B’ in fifth and Bernice Ayer ninth.
