sustainable HOUSING development Eco Green Village and MILD HOMES Social Housing urban planning proposal System of Space : 2700 mq, Urban planning, Zero energy House My role : Project leader within a team, concept and development design, drawings and visualizations. Summary MILD HOME aims at defining the design and triggering the construction of a new typology of civil building called MILD HOME, which combines high energy performances and affordable operative costs for lowmiddle income people (young couples/families). Environmental sustainability, livability and architectural quality are the basic principles that characterize the new urban portion called Eco Green Village. The idea of the project is to give birth to a new kind of neighborhood that turned into a place to be active and attractive in the immediate present and long term . L ‘ ambition of a local development plan is to create a new development area based on the concept of optimization of energy management, environmental and , more generally, the design of buildings and outdoor spaces of high quality accessible to weaker income groups. The proposal provides 3 types of houses grouped together to form a cube of height two floors. The change is given planimetric mixing and turning these types. In this way, the system generates a high variation settlement that creates vibrant spaces of relation is completely public and private. The access to the apartments on the first floor is designed so as to localize, for each block, on a different facade and orientation. This solution creates and vitalizes the activities between the different blocks helping to keep the community together. All outdoor spaces act as a meeting place, as the domain of interaction, contributing to the birth of a sense of community. The green islands on which every block function as elements of the definition of outdoor space, creating a natural transition and border areas between shared and private.

PROJECT CONSTRUCTION DEVELOPMENT

TYPOLOGIES AND CONSTRUCTION The starting point is a basic module built with a prefabricated structure called X- Lam. The central block bathroom -kitchen includs the technical facilities and plays the pivotal role in the entire composition of the module. We propose three types of apartments : the basic module is an apartment of 50 square meters, with day and a night module and block service / kitchen. This type is designed for users such as young couples, elderly couple, workers or students. The type can evolve thanks to the modular repeatable construction. With this system, we start from the basic module of 50 square meters to 62 square meters and then reach even 90 sqm. The expansion of the block obviously has an impact on outdoor patios that grows increaseing the modules.

TYPE A - 1 room 50 m2

TYPE B - 2 rooms 62 m2

TYPE C - 3 rooms 90 m2

The goal of the design proposal is a type of housing with high energy performance, low environmental impact, low cost of construction by using the principle of prefabrication with structure in X-Lam. In accordance with local regulations the houses are designed with a detailed study of sustainable architectural materials and local resources to achieve energy self-sufficiency. For this purpose the energy requirements of each house is covered with photovoltaic, solar panels and geothermal.

Awards with mention of the Jury

Summary

Considering the city as a meeting place , we propose a development of urban space that is based on the community. In this context, the project offers a range of activities to ensure the diversity and interaction between citizens. The basic intention is then to give an open and permeable space, with a several places of cultural interest and social functions , giving the new complex public content such as promoters of a new centrality. Because of its location , the area lends itself naturally to be inserted into a succession of public spaces , including the nearby shopping areas and the historical center, the church square and the sports fields , with the aim to create a system of squares clearly becoming the new centrality of Casinalbo . On the basis of morphological and readings of historical knowledge on the evolution of the city center, which is the set of events which have changed and radically transformed the landscape and its form , it was possible to achieve an overview on which to build a project proposal that defines a possible future scenario for the complex of the former sausage factory Maletti and for the surrounding area.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT From site project issues to development of the idea

From the analysis performed there were some aspects that characterize the landscape: - The three linear systems that cross the area, east of the railroad tie, the west via Modena - Sassuolo, the center of the watercourse; - The design of agricultural patchwork ordering the territory; - The urban grid, with a base module. Space is like landscape of transition between the urban and agro. It is therefore clear that the new park will be declined taking into account the need to create a gradient between urban and agricultural development.

EUROPAN 12 “ADAPTABLE CITY” Mannheim, The green line : free space, free life System of Space : 1800000 mq, Feasibility study, Urban Masterplan My role : Project leader within a team, concept and development design, drawings and visualizations.

Summary

The twelfth edition of Europan has been focused on the theme of adaptable city. Adaptability is the quality of a space that can be easily modified in harmony with changes to witch its use is subject or may be subjected. The selected project area required to focus on the concept of Networked Territories. We have studied a new territorial redevelopment plan ables to change the entrance to the City by restoring and linking important and different areas with residential, productive and social intended purpose. The project was developed from the B38 highway redevelopment, transforming this huge shaft in a green line that has allowed the characterization of the new entrance to the city and the connection of various facing networks. The studied area is located at the north-eastern edge of Mannheim at the interface to the outer city districts of Vogelstang and Käfertal and the city border to the Hessian town of Viernheim. Currently the strong presence of B38 gives an important regional role to this area although there is not recognizable connection between urban structure and the B38. Within a foreseeable future the conversion of B38 will set up a new city entrance. The conversion sites - Benjamin Franklin Village and Taylor Barracks - provide an opportunity to reconceive the development corridor: they will be gradually involved in the urban dynamics and they will be linked by a new public transport system, which will act as a possible catalyst for the development in these unlinked areas. While this makes the B38 corridor a more attractive development area – in term of National, Regional and Local scale – it also fuels a process of centralization in favor of the strong, big, and well established central areas of in the city. To sustain the strategic position of the B38, the project focus is to create a new relationship between the areas on both sides through three complementary strategy issues: new networks – new public urban spaces – new economic productive development. THESIS IN COMPOSITION AND URBAN PLANNING

THE ARCHITECTURE OF COMMERCE as CIVIC SPACE A new settlement pattern in the city of Salvador de Bahia

Abstract

Trade, as economic infrastructure essential for the city, has been shown to play an active role in building collective aspect of urban space. The evolution of organizational forms and typologies often coincided with the transformation of urban life. If trade, in the old city, spontaneously occupied spaces within the urban fabric and important from the point of view of social, cultural and political, from the Industrial Revolution onwards the market is set up as self-employed. We are thus witnessing the construction of spaces “carefully crafted” for the transaction and the exchange of goods. The shopping center, as defined by its designer Victor Gruen, is the new model in the era of suburban department store, is an architectural solution that combines commercial and civilians in a chaotic landscape and dispersed in which the trade becomes a means for defining a civic center and community for the American suburbs. The theories and the objectives proposed by Gruen in suburban civic center were never fully realized, so that the lack of project many of his successors has led, in later years, the creation of anonymous spaces, leading to the slow decline of the prototype mall. The thesis deals with the study of the Brazilian city of Salvador de Bahia through the architecture of the Shopping Mall intended as a device for territorial development that interprets the logical separation of the city-formal and informal-designed and spontaneous. The shopping mall, which was transposed in the city of Salvador, interprets the socio-cultural dynamics and the need for the city to create spaces of relevance collective gathering places that offer, as well as consumer goods, social spaces are safe and tested. The thesis therefore proposes a settlement pattern and typological alternative to existing commercial centers, the breakdown by housing plans. The architecture works with the landscape by establishing a new relationship with the earth terraces and floors, regulators principle of settlement, defines the dialogue between the interior and exterior, a new link between the activities internalized shopping and public platform to ‘ outdoors. Shopping studied here in detail lies in the green valley that divides the district of Brasilia and the favela Jardim villas Saramandaia, space vacated by the strong topographic and unused for hydrogeological and physical issues. The project, evolving the concept inherited from V. Gruen, wants to cross different scales of project proposing to one side as a catalyst for urban-regional metro area of Salvador (standing near the highway) and the other involving the community in which it is inserted for its spatial and its programmatic mix of civic and cultural functions. LABORATORY OF DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION V System of Space : Housing + Student Housing + Foundation and gallery My role : Project leader within a team, concept and development design, drawings and visualizations.

Summary

The block is inserted in an urban stand-by time: the choice is then to continue the shopping street of Via Sonnino hours functionally interrupted. A system of open squares to the city a new structure of spatial hierarchy. The project introduces a series of collective public spaces and in particular the ground floor. Some of them are for the exclusive use of residents, others have turned to the neighborhood. The location of services on the ground floor is structured in relation to the path system. Each square and the court is characterized by the presence of a specific service: the cultural foundation of the cafeteria in the central square, the classrooms and the library in the court of the semi-public student center, a courtyard garden in the residential area. The existing and new alignments define the lot on the four sides and create a hierarchy of inputs: the Via Sonnino continues to maintain its importance Axis Urban Pedestrian and creeps into the isolated loops forming public courts. The project is therefore organized around three different open spaces, public and semi-public but with different spatial and appliances. The square is characterized by access main facade of the former factory and serves as a hub and access to the new intervention. The Second Circuit Court acquired a connotation semiprivate and is characterized by the presence of residential towers. The third court, semipublic, reopens with a neighborhood overlooking the city and on a common life and is characterized by a garden belonging to the cluster’s students.
