INSTRUMENTATION: Soprano Flute Violin Cello Percussion [kick drum, snare, bongos, woodblock, hi-hat, china cymbal, sizzle cymbal, plastic grocery bag, laptop with Max/MSP sent through snare head via contact speaker]

Performance Notes: Soprano:

Flute:

All sung materials are presented in IPA. Traditionally unvoiced consonants not followed by a vowel should remain unvoiced (i.e. [tʃ]).

Staging: The soprano alternates between being a seated member of the ensemble and emerging as a performative soloist.

At the start of the piece, the soprano should be seated between the flutist and percussionist on stage-right relative to the rest of the ensemble. At mm.

57, the soprano should stand and begin walking dreamily towards the audience while performing the part from memory. At all times when not singing (i.e. mm. 62-64), the soprano is to freeze in place and turn back to the ensemble before returning to aimless meandering when singing again. The soprano is to return directly to her seat at mm. 85 once interrupted.

ELECTRONICS: Detailed instructions for the electronics setup can be found in the supplied Max patch. Percussionist is responsible for triggering events in the electronics part using the spacebar of the laptop. The electronics signal will be sent via a contract speaker on the center of the head of the snare drum (snares on). This is the only amplification required.

PROGRAM NOTES: Dream Mechanics (2017) for mixed ensemble navigates the boundary between the substantive and abstract psychological terrains of dreams. Inspired by the magical realism of author Haruki Murakami and with symbolic references to some of his more metaphysical works, Dream Mechanics adopts a range of behavioral modes in search of a musical identity. Commissioned by Elizabeth and Justus Schlichting, Dream Mechanics was composed for and premiered at the inaugural Blackbird Creative Lab held in Ojai, California.
