PETER SMIDA, GUEST ARTIST Peter is a dancer, choreographer, actor and emerging filmmaker based in Vancouver, BC Canada, whose work focuses on an honest and abstract approach to narrative. He is currently an artist in residence with Ballet BC as well as a teacher for Modus Operandi and the Arts Umbrella Dance Company. Peter began dancing at the age of 15 in his hometown of Kingston, Ontario, before completing his formal training and graduating from Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. After performing with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Ballet Victoria, he joined Ballet BC in 2008 and stayed there for the next 11 seasons. There, he created, collaborated, and performed works by internationally esteemed choreographers such as Crystal Pite, William Forsythe, Ohad Naharin, Johan Inger, Sharon Eyal and Medhi Walerski, among several others.

Most recently, Makaila has acted as an assistant to Finnish choreographer Jorma Elo, including coaching his pieces at the prestigious 2018 Prix de Lausanne, setting his work and helping to stage his productions on both Pennsylvania Ballet and the Finnish National Ballet. Furthering her passion of movement research and professional development, Makaila travelled to Tel Aviv, Israel to study in the Gaga teacher training program. She is delighted to be back with Ballet BC as a guest rehearsal director and to play Lady Capulet.
