MISSION OF THE SCHOOL The European School of Bucharest aims at developing healthy, balanced, openminded , receptive, tolerant, sociable and polyvalent young people who acquire deep knowledge about the world in which they grow up, skills and abilities to adapt to a changing world, giving opportunities to all students to reach their personal goals and to become lifelong learners who appreciate and promote democratic values and practices real international citizens of the third millennium.

Develop partnerships with other schools/ organizations/ institutions in the local community, in the country or abroad. 3. Form a quality teaching body able to implement our institution’s vision and mission. 4. Develop the processes of monitoring and evaluation of quality in our school.

CURRICULUM GENERAL PRESENTATION ESB curriculum is a complex one conceived to ensure a corresponding training to our students so that they could continue their studies in Romanian educational institutions or abroad. This is achieved by the completion of the basic curriculum – which is the Romanian one with elements of the British curriculum, focused on the European key competences and the import of some practices present in international schools.


ROMANIAN CURRICULUM All the subjects in the national curriculum elaborated by MECTS (Romanian Ministry of Education) are studied at SEB in a modern European way based on: -use of active-participative methods -small group-work and cooperative learning -enhancement of the multiple intelligences -development of the emotional intelligence -development of trans-disciplinary competences -learning activities through which students put into practice the content achieved in a real-life environment -differentiated learning and study programs according to students’ needs -supplementary support and preparation activities that ensure each student’s progress -activities that reevaluate and point out the school performance and excellence -individual and group counseling for a good behaviour and best relationships with colleagues and teachers carried out by a team of three school counsellors -intensive study of English, Romanian and Mathematics -students’ involvement in numerous extra-school activities -develop students’ autonomy in preparing their homework and their individual working skills -a solid preparation for the national tests and examinations. The European School of Bucharest is accredited by the Romanian Ministry of Education, Research and Innovation (MECTS) and by the Romanian Agency of Insurance of Quality in Pre-University Education (ARACIP).

ELEMENTS OF THE CURRICULUM AND SCHOOL LIFE PROPER TO THE INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM OF EDUCATION The Romanian curriculum is completed at ESB by the following curricular and school life practices taken over from the International schools: • a rich and varied offer of clubs that allow children’s gifts, talents and specific interests to be turned to a good account • project-based learning; children often work on individual or group projects for different subjects and once a year a complex presentation of projects is organized; during it each class presents a project with a European topic • every child has a progress portfolio that contains samples of works, summative tests, worksheets, etc that are transmitted to the parents at the end of the semester • set of evaluation reports sent to the parents at the end of the semester that register all the class teachers appreciations • self-development lessons held by the school counsellors at every class • uniform and sport suit with the school emblem are compulsory

• Assembly – Monday meeting at ESB during which a keen event is presented, students are distinguished and announcements are made • panels on which children’s works achieved at different subjects are displayed • Students Council that represents at ESB the students’ voice and works according to the British model • Different ways of appreciation and reward of the academic successes and good behaviour – diplomas, congratulation letters, distinguish during Monday assemblies • ESB monthly newsletter sent to parents and children • achievement of a Year Book at the end of the school year • charity actions organised by students and parents • volunteering for different activities • Drama club and festivals concept • an inclusive curriculum that ensures learning opportunities and success for every student.

European Key Competences At ESB the curriculum aims at forming the key competences established at the level of the European Union: • Communication in mother tongue • Communication in foreign languages • Mathematical competences and elementary competences in sciences and technology • Competences in using the new informational and communication technologies • Learning to learn competences • Interpersonal relationship competences and civic competences • Initiative and entrepreneurship spirit • Cultural sensibility and artistic expression

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS PRACTICES The English Programme has an important rate in ESB curriculum: • English is studied intensively, 10 lessons per week, 2 per day for the primary school and 7 lessons per week for middle school and high school. • Academic Writing and Basics of Business and Management classes are offered to grades 9 and 10 in order to prepare those students who are interested in taking the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. • reading-comprehension, speaking-communication, listening and writing skills are harmoniously developed; • textbooks published by international publishing houses and auxiliaries adapted to the children’s level and age (workbooks, audio and video tapes, CDs etc.) are used; • every year we organize, with the support of the British Council, the preparation and the examination for the Cambridge certificates of English language, “Young Learners of English”, KET, PET, FCE, CAE. • DELF, German Certificates and DELE exams are taken by students interested in the advance study of a second foreign language other than English. • Special English Evening and Halloween parties are organized; • ESB encourages students to be involved in volunteer work and to organize charity fairs and concerts; • ESB has become an IB World School in May 2013 and will offer the IB Diploma Programme from September, 2013.
