THE SOLITARY WALLS

BEGINNING OF A JOURNEY

INTO THE DESERT IS NOT EASY, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN WHEN FACING HARDSHIPS. WALKING THROUGH THE SOLITARY WALLS ALLOWS YOU TO WALK ALONG WITH YOUR SHADOW WHEN IT CONSTANTLY REMINDS YOU THAT YOU ARE ALL ALONE. EXPERIENCE THE SOLITARY ATMOSHPERE AS THE DEADLY CONCRETE WALLS GUIDE YOU THROUGH TO AN ISOLATED SULPTURE SPACE FOR A QUIET MOMENT, BUT THEN REVEALS AN ALTERNATIVE OPENING TO ANOTHER STAGE OF LIFE.

1:200 ACTING AS BOTH A SHADOW PROJECTION FEATURE AND A VISUAL BARRIER TOWARDS BOTH SIDES OF THE SQUARE, THE WALLS CREATE AN ISOLATED ENVIRONMENT AT THE CENTRE BY WHICH THE “WALKING MAN” SCULPTURE IS SITUATED. THEY NARROW DOWN MAJOR WALK PATHS AND GUIDES USERS TO AN ALTERNATIVE PATHWAY WHERE IS LEADS TO THE “MEANDER”.

THE MEANDER

LIFE IS NEVER A STRAIGHT SMOOTH ROAD, WE

GO THROUGH IT WITH FAILURES, DOWNSHIPS AND HURDLES, THERE ARE AT TIMES WHEN WE LOSE DIRECTION IN OUR LIVES, AND HAVE FORGOTTON THE TRUE MEANING OF LIVING, THEN WE WILL TRY DIFFERENT ATTEMPTS TO SEEK FOR ANSWERS. THE MEANDER RECREATES THE JOURNEY OF US IN OUR PURSUIT OF THE MEANING OF LIFE. THERE ARE DISTRACTIONS WHEN WE ARE MOVING TOWARDS OUR GOALS, AND TEMPTATIONS TO TAKE SHORT-CUTS TO SUCCESS. HOWEVER FOR THOSE WHO ARE WILLING TO MOVE THROUGH THE INEVITABLE WINDING HURDLES AND CLEAR THEM, WILL ARRIVE AT A DESTINATION OF REJUVENATION.

SECTION

THE TRIANGULAR DOME SHAPES ARE USED TO DEPICT DISTRACTIONS WHEN WE ARE WORKING TOWARDS OUR GOAL IN LIFE.

A VIRTUAL SHORT-CUT CREATED BY THE REMOVAL OF SEVERAL TIMEBER POLES. IT DIRECTS THE USER WALKING THROUGH IT TO ANOTHER DIRECTION INSTEAD OF MOVING TOWARDS THE NEXT DESTINATION.

THE WINDING PATTERN OF THE MEANDER IS A PHYSICAL STATEMENT TO THE FACT THAT LIFE IS NEVER A SMOOTH PATH, BUT INSTEAD IS A CURVING AND WINDING, SOMETIMES A BUMPY ROAD.

THE BAMBOO PAVILION

REJUVENTATION IS NECES-

SARY FOR EVERYONE IN ORDER TO REGAIN ENERGY LOST FROM GETTING THROUGH DIFFICULT TIMES. THE BAMBOO PAVILION PROVIDES SHELTER FOR BOTH SUNLIGHT AND RAIN FOR EXISTING BENCH USERS WHILE PROVIDING AN EXHIBITION SPACE FOR THE “RECUMBENT FIGURE” WHICH SYMBOLIZES REST AND PEACE, AND AT THE SAME SECTION A TIME AN ENVIRONMENT FOR RELAXATION AND REJUVENATION.

SECTION B

DURING RAINY DAYS, THE STONE BASIN ON THE ROOF OF THE PAVILION WILL COLLECT THE WATER AND DRAIN THEM INTO THE SCULPTURE EXHIBITION POOL WHICH IS CONNECTED TO AN UNDERGROUND STORAGE. THE STORED WATER COULD THEN BE USED FOR IRRIGATION AND DRINKING PURPOSES.

A WATER FOUNTAIN SCENERY IS ALSO CREATED DURING RAINFALL WHICH INDUCES ANOTHER SCULPTURE EXHIBITION ATMOSPHERE.

THE LOOKOUT

A

HOPE MARKS THE END OF THIS PHYSICAL JOURNEY, BUT

MARKS THE BEGINNING OF A NEW LIFE. AFTER A PERSON HAS MOVED FROM LONELINESS TO A LOSS IN DIRECTION, TO A POINT OF REJUVENATION, HE WILL EVENTUALLY SEE HOPE IN HIS LIFE, SYMBOLIZED BY THE ARRIVAL OF AN OASIS. THE LOOKOUT CREATES AN UPWARD JOURNEY TO AN EXPOSED PLATFORM WHERE THE “BIRD IN SPACE” IS EXHIBITED. NOT ONLY DOES THE SPECTACULAR BIRD’S EYE VIEW OF ARGYLE SQUARE BECOMES THE ATTRACTIVE ATTRIBUTE, BUT WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT IS THAT VTHE TIMBER PLATFORM ON THE SECOND LEVEL ENABLES THE USER WHO WENT THROUGH ALL THE THREE SCULPTURES TO HAVE THEM VISUALIZED AT ONCE IN THE SAME PICTURE--A REFLETION IN ONE’S LIFE.

I ORGINALLY EXTRACTED DANIEL LIBESKIND’S LIGHTNING FORM IDEA OF HIS JEWISH MUSEUM TO DEPICT AN ATMOSPHERE OF FEAR IN MY DESIGN. HOWEVER IT WASN’T RESPONDING TOO WELL WITH MY AGENDA, WHICH WAS A JOURNEY THROUGH HARDSHIP. INSTEAD OF SYMTOMS OF SCARS AND BRUISES A LIFE FULL OF DIFFICULTIES SHOULD BE A LONG AND WINDING JOURNEY JUST LIKE A RIVER. THEREFORE A MEANDERING FORM WAS DEVELOPED.

THE WINDING PATHS: A HARSH JOURNEY

THE INITIAL IDEA FOR CREATING THE SOLITARY WALLS CAME FROM THIS PICTURE, WHICH GAVE ME AN IDEA TO MAKE USE OF A PERSON’S SHADOW TO CREATE A SOLITARY ATMOSPHERE, JUST LIKE ONE WHO IS WALKING ALONE IN THE DESERT OR WHEN ONE IS FACING ADVERSITIES.

THE ORIGINAL DESIGN WAS ALTERED THROUGH THE EXPLORATION OF A DESIRED MOVEMENT PATTERN. THE DESIGN HAD TO BE ABLE TO GUIDE PEOPLE TO MOVE IN AN ALTERNATE PATHWAY INSTEAD OF THE ALREADY EXISTING WALK PATHS ON THE SITE.

AN ISOLATED ZONE IN THE CENTRE OF THE WALLS MAKE UP THE EXHIBITION SPACE FOR THE “WALKING MAN SCULPTURE”. IT RESPOND TO MY AGENDA AS THE ATMOSPHERE CREATED BY THE DESIGN WHICH IS A SOLITARY AND LONELY WALKING JOURNEY IS ONE THAT CAN BE EXPERIENCED IN THE DESERT WHEN WALKING ALONE.


FESTIVAL OF VISION: HONG KONG IN BERLIN 2000

THE INITIAL DESIGN FOR THE CONVERGING STAIRS WAS NOT PRACTICAL AND MIGHT CAUSE CONGESTION OF PEOPLE MOVING UP AND DOWN. I THEN REFINED THE STAIRCASE INTO A CIRCULAR ONE TO MAKE MOVEMENT SIMPLER AND AVOID OVERCROWDING OF USERS.

AN IDEA OF THE LOOKOUT PLATFORM INITIATED FROM A NATURAL ATTRIBUTE OF THE SITE, THAT IS SUNLIGHT EXPOSURE. I THOUGHT THAT HOPE SHOULD BE SYMBOLIZED WITH SUFFICIENT SUNLIGHT, THEREFORE A LOOKOUT COULD BE USED FOR THE EXHIBITION FOR THE “BIRD IN SPACE” SCULPTURE.

THE LOOKOUT: EXHIBITION SPACE FOR THE “BIRD IN SPACE”

VARIOUS EXISTING ARCHITECTURE HAD INSPIRED ME TO CREATE A PAVILION IN BAMBOO, WHICH IS A LIGHTWEIGHT AND STRONG MATERIAL. HOWEVER THE MOST IMPORTANT REASON WAS THAT THERE IS A SAYING IN CHINESE THAT BAMBOO REPRESENTS SAFE HOUSING, WHICH MEANS A COZY AND WARM HOME. THUS IT LINKS CLOSELY WITH MY AGENDA TO CREATE A SPACE FOR THE “RECUMBENT FIGURE” ADVOCATING REST AND REJUVENATION.
