White believes that groups such as Wander Woman Kansas play a role in the annual increase of women hunters. “I started this group to empower women and figured out along the way that there were so many opportunities,” she said. Before starting Wander Woman Kansas “I struggled and unless I had a man taking me around, I felt hesitant to take the initiative,” White added. “Being involved in Wander Woman enables you to have that comfort and space where you don’t have to be an expert to have access to the kinds of activities that we do. I know when we go to Joe’s place for our annual Deer Camp, we are never going to be disappointed. He hosts us because he believes in us and wants us to be successful. It’s very family oriented. Even my Dad participates as a guide.”
such as these is Wander Woman Kansas Founder and Kansas native Jessica White, who, since 2018, has been organizing events designed specifically to bring women together for outdoor adventures. Among those adventures is not only hunting but fishing, kayaking, rappelling, hiking and paddleboarding, to name a few. Yet hunting is one experience that perhaps nurtures the most substantial personal growth among group participants. “Being outdoors at a place like Timber Hills Lake Ranch can be so peaceful,” White, 36 said. “When you are working really hard together, you bond in a different way and on the same level, too.” The adventure is frequently so profound that afterwards, some women volunteer to come back as guides.

EMBRACINGKANSASWOMEN HUNTERS

“It’s amazing to see how excited the women are after a hunt,” White said. As the evening bonfire is being built and marshmallow sticks are being gathered “they praise each other and help each other and become really good friends. You’d never know they didn’t know each other beforehand. It’s the most wonderful thing to watch.” Bisogno agrees and feels there is another wonderful thing about hunting that may often get overlooked. “There’s nothing political about the outdoors.”
3UMW 2022
“A woman should not feel afraid to try something like hunting,” Bisogno explained. “They should not feel limited. It’s something that more and more women are doing.” While Bisogno, 41, enjoys spending time with hunters from all walks of life, men and women included, he personally feels women take instruction well and often times
better than men, and often times are a better shot than a man. “And I really enjoy the first-time women hunters, too,” he Facilitatingadded.events
hunters. “It used to be about 90% men and 10% women,” he said. “Now it’s about 70% to 30% but in states like Arkansas it’s definitely 50-50.”

Joe Bisogno checks the upcoming schedule at his deer hunting haven, Timber Hills Lake Ranch in Mapleton, Kansas, and a huge smile spreads across his face. Because during that particular week, he’s hosting women hunters. Not only that, women hunters who belong to Wander Women Kansas, a group specifically organized to encourage camaraderie and skill building among women while embracing the outdoors. While it may not be the only group of women hunters he clears his schedule for, it is one of his favorites.

I greatly appreciate everyone who offers their support in the form of advertising, as this provides revenue to publish each magazine and helps alleviate the obligation from state associations for this purpose. Advertising is the best and most effective way to keep your farm, product or services in front of those who need it most. While advertising has been proven to work well when done consistently and repetitiously, some advertisers such as Mary Volk of Cuddliez custom embroidery service,
in these popular e-books, as well as for updated features on our multi state association website, deersites. com. As 2022 progresses, please know that I am proud to be a part of such a great and inclusive industry. If anyone is interested in pursuing a Feature Farm article with my journalist Gail Veley, please get with me on pricing and other details. And remember to officially start marking your calendars for March. It’s our new official “Membership Drive Season!!”
Viola, Kansas won the drawning with his participation renewing memberships with three state associations. The prize this year was a Holy Stone GPS Drone. Many conference attendees checked back with me afterwards in the hope that they had won. But don’t dismay. We may have another drone in the near future to offer. Right now, Brad is really enjoying his new and well-deserved gift.
My Multi-State Association Booth has become a mainstay at many state association events, created to entice industry participants to not only support their own state association, but to join others as well. Making this a one-step and easy process has always been my goal as individuals can fill out one simple form and make one payment, and yet join as many associations as they wish. And each year at NADeFA conventions, anyone who joins multiple state deer associations is entered into a drawing for a special high-end gift.
even more important is the enthusiasm felt from renewing members and the anticipation of learning more about other state associations felt by newly registered members.

Custer,
Success with your line breeding efforts is realized when, after a few years, your herd begins to display and sustains a consistent look and striking resemblance, Bontrager explained.
And while history may point to successful cases of inbreeding (breeding father to daughter or son to mom or full brother and sisters) chances of this can be slim. Fifteen years ago, a buck fawn bred his womb sister. A doe from that breeding was then outcrossed and subsequently produced one of the biggest 10-point mainframe breeding bucks of all time, Maxbo Arty.

Then, your thoughtfully bred supercharged doe can be outcrossed to a buck with your preferred traits, to perpetuate the type of whitetail herd you are desiring to raise, said Bontrager, 37, who’s been producing deer with his father Ezra since 2000.

When your supercharged doe has her own doe offspring, you would then breed those does back to your established select in-herd sires, rather than outcrossing, as this would take you farther away from the genetics and look you are after. Although this takes time and several breeding cycles, this process creates your line bred foundation stock. In most cases, only 10 to 15 percent of bucks produced from your supercharged doe will become breeder bucks and the rest, stocker bucks, said O’Lamar Borkholder of O’La Jo’s Whitetails, a seven-acre breeding farm in Bremen, Indiana. While the intent behind line breeding is to perpetuate desirable traits, inside every well-bred doe are hidden undesirable traits that only show up in her offspring, said Borkholder, who raises mainly typical deer. “The hardest thing is to keep that typical look – long, nice round beams,” he said. Therefore, if not done carefully, line breeding can expose undesirable traits and be a bigger downfall than an advantage.
Twin Maple has heavily line bred the Patrick line into their herd, as a result of Ezra visiting Pine Creek Deer Farm and being impressed by long-tined typicals.

breeding can present opportunities to produce desired, marketable and consistent traits within your whitetail herd, if you breed carefully and patiently. The bottom leg of a doe’s pedigree is the foundation for line breeding, explains Cletus Bontrager of Twin Maple Deer Farm, a 12-acre breeding farm in Shipshewana, Indiana which focuses on producing typical bucks. A doe with a strong bottom pedigree could ultimately produce a “supercharged” doe by following these most recommended steps. First, breed her to a desirable outcrossed sire. Next, select her most desirable 1st generation daughter and breed her to an outcrossed sire. Next, take this daughter’s most desirable 1st generation buck fawn and when he has matured, breed him back to his grandmother. Should this match create a doe, that doe will more than likely be the supercharged doe more “powerful” than her mother that you will use steadfast for breeding, in an effort pass on strong genetics and favorable, marketable traits.
(continued)
Today, 100% of Twin Maple’s 180 deer all anchor down to one doe. However, Borkholder, whose cousin Eddie Ray produced the famous line-bred Patrick deer, finds very few deer farmers today have the patience to wait and develop a herd of line bred foundation stock. Of the four types of breeding choices one can practice (inbreeding, line breeding, match breeding and random breeding) he finds most deer farmers choose random breeding whereby a farmer breeds a quality doe to the biggest or most popular buck on the scene at the moment. Many deer farmers also practice match breeding, a close cousin to line breeding, which involves perpetually choosing genetic lines that “click” or are known to produce well.
HOW CORRECTLYTO LINE BREED AND WHY
However, in some cases, inbred deer are born blind, weak, get ugly racks or too runt-like to be worth feeding, Bontrager said. Line breeding (breeding uncles to nieces or nephews to aunts) absolutely requires having the right doe from the very bottom leg of her pedigree, Borkholder emphasized.

While traditional theories may suggest that either the “X” or “Y” chromosome predominantly effects the sex of offspring, research has shown that other factors way heavily into the outcome of breeding.

is mounting that MaleMaxx, a nutritional supplement for does manufactured by GenMax, LLC, is helping to improve the sex ratio of buck to doe fawns at several whitetail deer farms. Various deer farmers have reported to GenMax owners Dr. Cliff Shipley and Dr. Rick Balsbaugh, an increase of 20% to 30% more buck fawns over doe fawns being born each fawning season. While the biological mechanism for this phenomenon has not been fully pinpointed, it is speculated that the ingredients and nutritional value found in MaleMaxx may allow for a greater mobility and concentration of male sperm versus female sperm to fertilize an egg, among several other unproven theories.
“I had a guy walk up to me at this past NADeFA and tell me ‘don’t stop making that stuff,’” Dr. Shipley said. “He said he’s been having an 80:20 male to female ratio every fawning season on his farm ever since he started using MaleMaxx.”
Feeding protocols dictate that MaleMaxx be fed 28 to 30 days prior to doe breeding and 28 to 30 days after breeding, on the chance your doe did not “take” the first breeding cycle and needs to be bred to the backup buck. MaleMaxx is available in 50-pound bags and costs approximately $45 per bag. Other GenMax products include ZenMax, a calming agent used to lessen the aggression of bucks in the rut or to aid in the safe transport of deer. Visit their website at www.malemaxx.com.
While a majority of farms now using MaleMaxx have had favorable results, some said they have not. “When we investigate, we conclude it’s because they have not followed the recommended feeding guidelines or the deer haven’t consumed it,” Dr. Shipley said. “It is also speculated that feeding humic acid, in conjunction with MaleMaxx, may have an effect on the efficacy of MaleMaxx.” Recommended doe feeding is ½ pound per day as a replacement, not in addition to, a ½ pound of other grains you are feeding. While feed costs are volatile at the moment, the average cost to feed a doe MaleMaxx is about $11 per month. Considering the additional revenue a farm may realize in having more bucks to sell, there is a substantial return on your investment, Dr. Balsbaugh explained.

Evidence
After reading a peer-reviewed paper 10 years ago which attributed nutrition as the key to altering breeding outcomes, Dr. Shipley turned to Dr. Balsbaugh, a nutrition specialist for 30 years for a major feed company. He asked him to create a product for this purpose as both men, long-time friends, felt it was worth pursuing. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Balsbaugh had created something he felt he was ready to try and Dr. Shipley’s deer farm, Salt Fork River Ranch in St. Joseph, Illinois, then became the living laboratory. In the eight years that Dr. Shipley has subsequently fed MaleMaxx to the does on his farm, he has experienced a 70:30 male to female ratio, as opposed to the more typical 50:50 male to female ratio found at most other farms. After seeing these results, MaleMaxx became commercially available four years ago.
HELPING TO IMPROVE THE RATIO OF BUCKS TO DOES

Some of these factors include environmental conditions, the density of the herd population and/or nutrition. Focusing in on the nutritional side of breeding ratios was the catalyst for creating a product to help whitetail deer farmers, said Dr. Balsbaugh. “Our goal was not to try and make a million dollars or market this on a huge scale, it was to help the deer industry,” he said.
If you want more of your animals being bucks, rams, or bulls on your ranch or farm …We’ve Got What It Takes… GenMax, LLC P. O. Box 41 Savoy, IL 61874 Dr. Shipley (217) 493 2958 cshipley@illinois.edu Dr. Balsbaugh (217) 653 1420 rbalsbaugh@yahoo.com www.malemaxx.com Imagine having up to 70% of your animals being bucks, rams or bulls for your ranch or farm. Many properties are “plagued” by too many females affecting the male: female ratio. Conservation departments are trying to manage too many females on the landscape affecting crops, auto insurance, property damage, and in some cases spreading disease. If we can affect the ratio by feeding MaleMaxx it may benefit all aspects of the hunting and preserve industry. The challenge of course is getting the product into the females at the right time of year, but this can be overcome with some creative feeding where egal. You may want to start feeding 4 6 weeks ahead of your normal rut in your area and feed for 4 6 weeks past the 2nd rut which usually includes the females of the year and any females that may not have conceived on the first cycle. For farms, just start feeding product to females 30 days ahead of breeding and 30 days after breeding and for 30 days after. IF YOU WANT MORE OF YOUR ANIMALS BEING BUCKS, RAMS, OR BULLS ON YOUR RANCH ...WE’VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES

years, for both hurricanes and tornados, deer farmers should plan adequately this spring to protect their animals and property. “The biggest thing you need to be mindful of with wind, are the trees around your fences and buildings,” explains Bray Bollinger of 2 Brothers Whitetail in Loranger, Louisiana. “Make sure when you are building a fence to avoid the possibility of trees that could fall on it, or trees that could compromise your house or outbuildings.”
Many deer farmers in southern states suffered losses and damages as a result of strong weather systems such as Hurricane Ida, a Category Four hurricane that formed on August 26th, 2021. According to internet research, the storm was responsible for 115 fatalities as well as destruction in Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Virginia and New Jersey. The year 2021 was the sixth consecutive year of above average tropical cyclone activity and the third most active on record. In addition, it was the fourth most-costly year for those effected, following behind hurricane damage caused in 2017, 2012 and Hurricanes,2005.whose

season is typically between June 1st and November 1st on any given year, have also begun forming earlier. Tropical storm Ana formed on May 22nd, 2021, the seventh year in a row this phenomenon has occurred. However, hurricanes are not the only destructive forces a deer farmer may deal with. Deer farmers in Oklahoma as well as in states such as Kansas, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Kentucky face seasonal tornadoes. According to the internet, 1,254
tornadoes were reported nationwide in 2021. On December 10th, 2021, a massive tornado lasting close to three hours with 190 mph winds blasted through Kentucky, caused major damage in at least five cities.

With strong winds being a major component of these types of storms, Bollinger recommends chaining your gates and shut “because they could blow right open and snap off past what you already use,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be a major chain but something with a lock. Lock all gates internally and externally. We’ve had it happen once when we didn’t do that, and our gates blew wide open.” Should shade cloth be attached to your fencing, Bollinger recommends removing it in the event a storm is predicted. “If you leave it up, it could pull your fence right down with it,” he said.Asimportant
as fence locks and netting maintenance, is the literal strength and placement of your fence. “Every four “T”-posts you should put in a bigger line post for added support,” Bollinger said. “However, you don’t want your fence too strong. You want your fence to have a little “give” to it so a deer can bounce off of it and not get hurt, but you also want something that can withstand heavy winds. Also, be aware of how flooding affects your property, and make sure water doesn’t push up against the fence.”
Lastly, wrapping chains around large, older established trees such as oak trees, is also something Bollinger highly recommends, to avoid the trunks splitting and the potential loss of a revered tree. “Remember as much as you try to protect trees and fences and property, there’s only so much you can do. Everyone has their struggles, anywhere you live,” Bollinger said. “Just do your best to be prepared.”

YOUTH HUNTING
By: Gail Veley • Sponsored by PDFA
The three bullet shells responsible for harvesting those three turkeys, each inscribed with Archer’s name, are kept on Glenn’s desk. He’s not only thrilled that his son shares one of his favorite pastimes, he’s also proud of his love of nature and the outdoors. Sharing that pride along with Glenn is Jeff Graham,
Glenn and Archer Dice
FUELING PASSION FOR THE OUTDOORS
26 UMW 2022
This enables us to enjoy year-round family-centered outdoor activities and to also be deer enthusiasts,” he said. “This involves working together as associations and staying abreast of current regulations and any proposed changes that affect us and standing up for our rights and practices of land ownership, management and stewardship.”
While Archer is poised to perpetuate this philosophy, he has yet to hunt whitetail, partially due to the fact that they are raised on the family farm, Glenn Dice Farms in Chambersburg. However, he has expressed an interest in trying. After they explore whitetail hunting sometime in the near future in Pennsylvania, Glenn and Archer may plan a Utah vacation to hunt mule deer. In the meantime, Glenn is working steadfast to maintain a constant presence in Washington on behalf of deer farmers, and to give back to an industry that has been so good to him and his family.
Nationally, hunting is a multi-milliondollar industry responsible for substantial annual revenue. In 2021, revenue from hunting licenses was reported at $902,356,898, a $3 million increase from 2020. The top six states for issuing hunting licenses are typically Colorado at approximately $59 million followed by Texas at $47 million, Wisconsin at $41 million, Minnesota at $39 million, Pennsylvania at $37 million and Michigan also at $37 million. Even the tiny state of Rhode Island registered 26,690 hunters in 2021.
owner of Custom Pro Friction Calls and the man who taught Glenn to turkey hunt. After hearing about Archer’s first hunt, he surprised Glenn with a picture of Archer holding his first turkey, along with a personal inscription for Archer. In sharing a love of the outdoors with Archer and his other young son Lincoln, 9, Glenn, 53, feels “it’s paramount to appreciate nature and spend time with them outside. There’s not a better morning than being out in the woods. It’s my favorite time of day.”

The most popular and number one animal to hunt is a whitetail deer followed by turkeys, elk and bear. While the interest in hunting is showing no signs of slowing down, without youth remaining interested in nature, hunting and the outdoors, subsequent decades may tell a different story. Vigilant deer farmers and preserve owners in Pennsylvania and in other states have a responsibility to ensure future generations embrace this same love, Glenn emphasized. “Being involved allows you to share your passion for the outdoors as well as collaborate on regulation development.
“Now whatever you do, don’t blow up Dad’s new decoy,” Glenn Dice affectionately told his young son Archer as they called in turkeys and waited during a spring 2021 hunt in their home state of Pennsylvania. When a big curious, striking gobbler checked out the decoy then stepped a few feet away, Archer, then 10, took his first shot ever as a hunter. Bingo. The victorious turkey hunt was followed by one in Florida this past spring and yet one more a month later back in Pennsylvania with another father and son. As the four eagerly waited in the cool predawn, competitive gobblers soon came running in, yet Archer appeared to hesitate. “Why aren’t you taking a shot?” Glenn whispered. “I don’t want to shoot your decoy,” Archer replied. Glenn quickly responded, “I don’t care about the decoy just shoot the darn turkey!” And with that, Archer’s aim was triumphant. He was the only one in the group to harvest anything that day.

IN HUMID CLIMATES
At his farm, Bontrager cultivates the dirt in the spring before fawning season, in late summer to replant new grass and again in the fall to plant crops such as soybeans or peas, in an effort to keep the land viable and less inviting to parasites.

Maintainingnon-conduciveenvironmentan for attracting parasites while knowing how to spot and effectively treat whitetail deer presenting symptoms of parasite infestation, is the key to having the healthiest herd possible. In humid climates such as those found in Florida, Louisiana and other parts of more humid deer-raising country, parasites such as worms, flies and mosquitoes can live for longer periods of time, creating an ever-present need to be vigilant. “One of the most obvious preventative measures is to not have standing water or mud in your pens, and to keep them clean,” said Daniel Bontrager of Bontrager Whitetails in Marianna, Florida. “Rake up old hay and keep manure to a minimum and cultivate the dirt three times a year.”
According to internet research, there are close to 80 species of mosquitoes

and 18 species of flies that are native to Florida. “That is probably right with the actual real numbers,” said University of Florida Veterinarian Dr. Juan Campos, who works in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences as well as the Department of Wildlife and Ecology. “There are 47 subspecies of the culicoides midge fly but only three that transmit EHD. Quite often we see more parasites like these year-round and farther down south in central and southern Florida where the weather is warmer.” Treating deer for parasite infestation is not always a clear-cut endeavor and Dr. Campos, 48, fears that some parasites may become resistant to traditional methods of treatment. “One of our biggest parasites, Haemonchus contortus, is getting resistant to treatment,” Dr. Campos explained. Found in their infective stage known as Larva Three on the tips of leaves or grass after defecation from an infected animal, once ingested, the worm migrates directly to the fourth stomach or abomasum of a deer, where it attaches itself to and resides in. There, it is able to produce thousands of eggs a day. These worms feed off the blood of deer, causing anemia, weight loss, scours and an overall unhealthy appearance.
successfulhowwilltreatmentreveal the treatment was, Dr. Heemphasized.Camposalsoadvises to not automatically treat your whole herd, but rather only those presenting symptoms such as droopy ears or reluctance to eat, as treating healthy animals may cause them to ultimately develop resistance. “More is not always better,” he said. “We have found that most of the time only 10% of a herd might be affected by a heavy load. The others may have a few parasites, but they don’t cause them problems.” And while administering medication can prove effective in controlling or treating parasitic infections, spraying insecticides such as broad-based Permethrin inside deer pens (but not on shade cloth) is also a common preventative practice. However, “remember when you are killing bad insects you might also be killing good ones,” Dr. mindfulsaid.Campos“Andbeof where you are Anythingspraying. on ofoutertheedgewhere you sprayed could resistance.”develop

These proactive measures, combined with dry pens and “always keeping eyes on your deer” can help deer farmers stay ahead of problems, offer Susan and Ian Hall, owners of Oak Island Whitetails in Okeechobee, Florida. They also believe that using natural water sources can help deer build up immunities to parasites.

The efforts of two valued organizations, NADeFA and the Texas Deer Association (TDA), allowed NADR, a 501c4 organization, to become a reality. Several years later, Venados De Mexico (VDM) joined as an organization. NADR is comprised of a team of dedicated scientists and office administrators as well as a 14-member volunteer board, five from NADeFA, two from VDM, five from TDA as well as NADeFA Executive Director Shawn Schafer and TDA Executive Director Kevin Davis. To become a NADR customer, one must first be an active voting member of the TDA, NADeFA or VDM and submit DNA samples to NADR in tissue tubes. Samples could include pulled (not shaved) hair between 30-50 millimeters long from the underside of the tail, an antler core from the base of a shed antler, semen straws or used semen straws with the cotton plug still intact. “The technologies then were very rudimentary and had been around for years in the cattle and sheep industry,” said NADR Executive Director Gary Cook. “They focused primarily on pinpointing the most accurate DNA analysis possible at the time.” As DNA technology advanced and NADR partnered with Dr. Chris Seabury and Texas A & M to license technology that shifted the focus to genotyping and identifying SNP molecular markers found in DNA, it resulted in 400 identifying markers utilized for parentage in whitetail
and mule deer. In addition, in 2016, NADR selected a new organization, Neogen (Geneseek), with state-ofthe-art laboratories all over the globe including Lincoln, Nebraska, to facilitate the transition to this new technology. To date, NADR has tested 350,000 fallow, mule and whitetail tissue samples combined, with a goal of providing official pedigree services for fallow deer later this year. Having a NADR registered deer doesn’t merely provide a handy reference for pedigrees, breeding values or breeding decisions. It’s a necessity should one wish to qualify for a consignment auction or prove their deer’s value to a potential buyer.
“We work very hard to offer the best in a genetic registry,” Cook said. “We continuously seek ways to provide knowledge and state of the art services to our customers.”

submission options include an excel spreadsheet, GMS software or manually. Cook emphasizes shipping samples that will arrive on a weekday, and to include with your sample all possible sire and dam NADR numbers including A.I. and backup bucks.

the deer industry evolves, the North American Deer Registry (NADR) is evolving right along with it. Begun in 2007 to validate the industry by providing information on DNA and pedigrees, NADR, located in Edmond, Oklahoma, is now incredibly specific with the information it provides. In the summer of 2021, new CWD Genetic Assay Technology (investigative procedures that measure the presence of a targeted entity) was introduced and is currently utilized using approximately 50,000 genetic markers. This new assay provides Genetic Estimated Breeding Values (GEBV’s) to allow breeders to determine each animal’s susceptibility to CWD and make future breeding decisions in order to “move away” from this disease.

This CWD technology was only a dream when NADR, in its infancy, studied 18 markers merely for the construction of simple, non-disease related genetic maps for parentage.

Yet, there are moments when Newton relaxes, however brief and cherished those moments might be on the peaceful and lush 10-acre farm in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Then, he just simply enjoys his deer and his role as a father to his young daughters

“The whitetail industry for me always has been, and will continue to be, my labor of love,” Newton said. “Through Cervid Solutions, I can always provide the best health tools for Red Ridge Whitetails and for a multitude of other like-minded deer farmers.”

Creating the desire to raise deer started in 1999 when Josh was 17 and visited his uncle’s deer farm for the first time. Within moments of being there, what stirred in his soul was something he couldn’t ignore. He bought his first deer and never looked back. Through working on the farm and learning a vast majority of relevant management skills, he eventually became the operations manager of Red Ridge Whitetails in 2006 after a fateful encounter and subsequent three-hour conversation with the owner. Today, Newton might be considered a walking encyclopedia or a beacon of information on whatever subject pertaining to whitetails you want to discuss. His never-ending drive to represent the industry and continually learn also extends to his role as President of the Pennsylvania Deer Farmer’s Association.
They are proud to raise typical deer from the likes of Roman, Rango, Legion, Big Fuzz, Two Big and Artisan among several more. Providing preserves and ranches with big-bodied, hearty, classic, genetically viable typical stocker bucks remains a steadfast goal. Their herd, numbering close to 50, are all DNA certified and registered and also GEBV tested for CWD susceptibility.
STRIVING TO REPRESENT THE DEER INDUSTRY IN A POSITIVE LIGHT

Lena, 5, and Gianna, 2. Watching them interact with fawns alongside his wife Lisa, 37, reminds him of how it all started. For this, Newton is grateful for the other lessons offered through deer farming. “The real lesson is the life itself,” Newton, 41, shared. “And whether we like it or not the reality is that life does exist and (the deer) depend on you. Sadly, some do die. But these experiences create a normal traditional value mindset and animals are a great conduit for that.”
three weeks in 2008, Newton vowed “never again.” Through his grief and resolve, Cervid Solutions, a company dedicated to providing cervid specific vaccines as well as health management protocols, was founded and today ensures that all deer at Red Ridge (and other farms) live the healthiest lives possible. By using Cervid Solutions as the foundation for putting prevention through herd health at the forefront of the farm’s daily operations, and limiting the number of deer per acre, Red Ridge stays poised to continue setting a good example to others.

His education didn’t always come easily or happen overnight. It evolved after Newton’s worst and ultimately best experience at Red Ridge Whitetails. After the heartbreak and exasperation of watching close to 20 fawns die within
Ridge Whitetails is more to Operations Manager Josh Newton than just a place to raise and sell deer. At the end of the day, the farm is a representation of all that is good about the deer industry. From the development, breeding and raising of quality seed stock for hunting ranches, to the practice of superior animal husbandry to the promotion of private land management and conservation, Newton’s goal is to help the industry as a whole to thrive and prosper. And he wants the governing bodies in his state, as well as in other states, to know how diligently deer farmers work to improve the health and vitality of whitetails in many facets including the potential eradication of CWD.
