Welcome to the Spring edition of 'Amsterdam Night and Day', the hippest, funkiest and most vibrant guide to entertainment in the Dutch capital. Winter in Amsterdam was once again mild, but that doesn’t stop us from hoping that springtime will bring about higher temperature levels and an increase in visitors. In recent years, the spring weather has been kind, so there should be ample opportunities to eat and drink at one of the famous outdoor terraces, with one eye on the various street entertainers and the other on the weird and wonderful passers by. The terraces are due to open in early March and there presence always makes the city more appealing. However, the weather is never a major factor when it comes to enjoying Amsterdam, because rain, sun, hail or snow, this city rocks 365 days a year. The concept of our magazine is simple. We want you to have fun during your stay in the Dutch capital and our hope is that this publication will help in some way to make your visit more memorable. If something inside surprises you, increases your knowledge or brings a smile to your face, our goals have been achieved. We don't specialise on subjects such as museums and tulips, because that's not what we are about. However, if you'd like to know about the fun side of Amsterdam, ie. the bars, restaurants, nightclubs, hotels, coffeeshops, funattractions and the Red Light District, you won't be disappointed by our content. As many of you are probably aware, Amsterdam Night & Day is only one of many free guides and maps you will find in the city, but unlike many others, we have only featured places that we have actually visited and we have tried to list all the venues which made a positive impact on our team. Our magazine is available in over 100 venues including hotels, bars, clubs, information bureaus and hotel info offices, so it shouldn't be hard to find us. We sincerely hope that you enjoy your stay in the Dutch capital and we also hope that you will in some way enjoy reading Amsterdam Night & Day. Stay safe and play safe and never hesitate to contact us about any aspect of the magazine. Carlo Divito, Editor.

Getting Around
Public transport in Amsterdam is among the best in Europe thanks to the constant availability, simplicity, efficiency and punctuality of the services.
TRAMS Trams operate at regular intervals throughout the entire city center and the outskirts from 6.0am until midnight. No matter where you need to travel in Amsterdam, you will have to wait no longer than 10 minutes at the tram-stop. You can travel anywhere in the city centre for one hour on any tram for 1.60 Euro. Special strip cards, which can last for the duration of your visit can also be purchased from many newsagents and supermarkets throughout the city.
TRAIN Central Station itself is an impressive building which is currently undergoing modernization reconstruction. The service provided by the Dutch Railway Board is exceptional and all trains will leave at regular intervals on time. TAXI Previously we trusted TCA taxi service, but several bad experiences made us think otherwise. More recently we placed our trust in Taxi Tulp, but once again, bad experiences made us change our mind, so to be honest, our advice is that you try at all costs to avoid taking a taxi. WATER TAXIS If you would prefer to float rather than wheel your way to your destination, you can take a watertaxi from various points of the city. It's an innovative and scenic way of traveling. BICYCLES You'll notice almost immediately, that there is an incredible number of bicycles in Amsterdam. In fact there's more chance of being run over by a bike than there is by a car. Renting a bike is a great way to see the city and we thoroughly recommend it.

THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT Famed the world over and that's not surprising. A stroll through Amsterdam's Red Light District is always an experience for obvious reasons. What many people don't seem to realize is that it is one of the oldest parts of the city and houses some truly beautiful buildings and churches.
CENTRAL STATION The first and last place the majority of people experience in Amsterdam's city centre, Central Station is a stunning building both outside and inside. The harbour of Amsterdam is at the back of the station. The construction of the Central Station in 1885 closed off the city from the open water for good and was a turning point in the Amsterdam economy.

a unique location DAM SQUARE The beating heart of the city. The Dam covers 17,000 square metres and is the national square of the Netherlands. It is also the oldest part of Amsterdam and almost 1,000 years ago fishermen, shipbuilders and craft workers settled in the area. Visual highlights around the
square include the national war monument and the Royal Palace. REMBRANDTPLEIN One of the top going-out areas of the city, the famous Rembrandt Square is amass with bars, cafes, clubs restaurants and bright lights and it enjoyed a huge facelift during 2006 to mark the 400th birthday of painter Rembrandt Van Rijn. The changes included new statues in the park, new lighting around the Square and the erection of a huge outdoor screen. Venture onto neighbouring Thorbeckeplein and you will find some of the city's best late night bars and night clubs.
LEIDSEPLEIN Another vibrant nightlife area, which is
illuminated by neon lights, while the countless bars, clubs, cafes and restaurants ensure an energetic atmosphere. Venture onto the side streets of the square to find yet more examples of Amsterdam's electric nightlife or take a walk up Leidsestraat to find some of the city's best shopping outlets. A trip to Leidseplein is a must for all visitors, especially the ones who enjoy the lighter side of life. THE NIEUWMARKT Located at the edge of Amsterdam's Red
Light District, and part of the ever expanding Chinatown, the Nieuwmarkt, is a picturesque and sizeable square which houses some excellent bars, restaurants and coffeeshops. In the centre of the square, you can find a church-like building called the Waag, once part of the ancient wall around Amsterdam. In association with:

Compiled by an Irish 'drinker'
Murphy's the name and drinking's the game. Despite the fact that I suffer from constant morning headaches and sporadic memory loss, I always know a good pub when I see one. So, this is one occasion when Murphy's Law should definitely be obeyed. Unlike a lot of other guides, I actually visited the pubs I reviewed, and anyone who thinks that too many Irish pubs are listed can go to hell, because as I already mentioned, I'm Irish.
THEME BARS There is no shortage of theme bars in Amsterdam and most can be found in the busy areas such as Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein and The Red Light District. Some go over the top in their bid to reach their desired theme, while others fall well short. Thankfully, there are those which are worth a visit. The following are a list of the pubs I have visited in the past couple of months.
HEINEKEN HOEK Kleine Gartmanplantsoen 1-3 One of the city’s most famous and most loved Grand Cafes can be found on one of the corners of Leidseplein and is impossible to miss due to its size and splendour. For many years,
6
Heineken Hoek has offered the perfect setting for relaxation during morning, afternoon and night.
WAVE KARAOKE BAR Kerkstraat 23. There are not so many opportunities in Amsterdam to grab the microphone and make a fool of yourself. One option is The Wave Karaoke Bar on Kerkstraat (close to Leidseplein). The lounge style venue is very attractive and the large couches make for a lot of comfort. However, the down side to this place is the service. On the few occasions we visited, the service was less than friendly and the management seem to be making no effort to improve it.
MULLIGANS Amstel 100. Tel: 020-6221330 If a genuine Irish atmosphere is what you are after then this place won't disappoint. Live Irish music is on the agenda most nights of the week and the performers are usually top notch. Every Sunday, the bar hosts an acoustic session when everyone is free to join in. The barmen are extremely nice guys and will go out of their way to make you feel at home. For further information about the live music which is coming up in the next few months, log onto their new website at www.mulligans.nl.
THE TARA Rokin 85-89. Tel.: 020-020-4212654. One of the most attractive bars in the city, the Tara Irish Pub has always been a popular spot for tourists and residents. The service is good as are most of the live music acts and the atmosphere during sporting events is usually electric. All major sporting events are screened inside. The pub also boasts an excellent food Outside The Heineken Hoek Cafe menu at reasonable prices. In association with:
The Tig Barra Experience The management describe this place as 'what an Irish bar should be', and they are not far wrong, because unlike so many others, Tig Barra provides, the service, comfort and quality that you would expect to find in Dublin, Galway or any other Irish city. Their excellence was recently rewarded as they were voted Europe's second best Irish bar by expedia.co.uk and the future is set to become even brighter as renovations to increase the capacity by 100 per cent are just about complete and have made Tig Barra even bigger and better than it already is. Contrary to what many commercial addicts believe, the quality and authenticity of a real Irish pub isn't gauged by the amount of Guinness memorabilia, or by countless framed images of green fields and pipe smoking pensioners. It's more to do with quality beverages, good food and most importantly, friendly service - Tig Barra boasts these attributes in abundance and for any of you are who are curious, the name Tig Barra means 'The House Of Barry' in English. A pint of the black stuff (Guinness) is as good as you will find anywhere on the Emerald Isle and Tig Barra is one of the only bars in Amsterdam
where you will be served a real Irish coffee. The food menu boasts quantity and quality The full Irish breakfast, the Sunday roast and the Irish stew have tickled my taste buds on several occasions and deserve special mention. And an added bonus is that the kitchen stays open until 11.0pm. Add in other facilities like an impressive terrace which will re-open during spring, a pool table, sky sports and RTE television, various different pub games and a wide range of daily newspapers, and you have an ideal venue for a relaxing, but fun-filled time, day or night. The bar is perfect for viewing all the top football matches and sporting events this spring. The venue is also available for private parties and functions. If you have any problems, just ask for the owner, Ruan (who unlike so many other Irish pub owners is actually Irish) who is an extremely friendly and helpful Dubliner. GETTING THERE: Tig Barra is located on Overtoom 31 and is only a five-minute walk from Leidseplein. The bar open from 10.0am daily and food is served until 11.0pm. Tel. - 020-4122210.

Slainte Irish Pub

8
Situated in the heart of the Red Light District, Slainte Irish Pub is celebrating it’s fourth year in business and in the short space of time since it’s doors opened, it has become one of the in-places for English-speaking tourists in Amsterdam. Incidentally, the word ‘Slainte’ means cheers in the Irish Gaelic language, just in case you were wondering. Unlike many of the other bars, the management of 'Slainte' have realised that contrary to many outside opinions, some Irish pubs have moved with the times and the modern and refreshing décor makes for a pleasant change. As has been mentioned many times previously, a real Irish pub is defined by service and atmosphere and those in charge at Slainte have realised this and created a modern bar which maintains the customary Irish feel and attracts a vibrant and young clientele. And unlike so many other places, most of the staff are actually Irish and their friendliness is gaining great recognition from regulars and short-term visitors alike. The bar offers a full range of beers and spirits at very reasonable prices and the friendly bar staff know exactly how to pull a pint - There's none of this half-foam, half-beer rubbish, which is evident in so many Dutch bars. Another bonus is the two daily happy hours (3.0pm to 4.0pm and 8.0pm to 9.0pm) when you can buy a drink and get one free. Slainte is also the perfect venue to watch
sporting events. Sky Sports can be viewed at the bar or on a big screen, which is situated in a prime viewing position in the lounge area. The bar covers all European football action and many other sports. If you feel more like participating in sports than viewing, you can relax with a friendly game of darts on their professional board. Another perk of the pub is the tasty food menu which includes several delicious traditional Irish dishes. The Irish breakfast is excellent and they don't hold back on the trimmings, and the range of lunches and evening meals is also impressive. In summing up, Slainte is a drinkers bar where you can sup top quality bevies and hear yourself speak. It is already becoming a local away from home for many English-speakers, because once you enter, it is extremely hard to leave. TAKE NOTE – Many new things will be happening in Slainte this spring including regular live music, quiz nights and special theme parties. It is also one of Amsterdam’s best venues to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th.

When walking the streets of Amsterdam, you could be forgiven for thinking you are actually pacing the roads and byways of Dublin or Galway, such is the number of Irish bars in the Dutch capital. However, quantity does not equal quality and many of these so- called 'Irish bars' go over the top in their bid to ensure an Irish theme while others fall well short. Thankfully, there are those which are well worth a visit and one of the best Irish bars in this city or any other is St. James Gate in the heart of Rembrandtplein. Named after the famous brewery where Guinness is brewed, St. James's Gate is a spacious venue, which prides itself on quality beverages, good food, an excellent atmosphere and most importantly, friendly service. Unlike many other Irish bars in the city, most of the staff actually hail from the Emerald Isle and those who don't, know more about Ireland and Irish culture than most 'paddys' themselves. Now that we think about it, it is unfair to describe the food as ‘good’, because it is much better than that. Last year, the management made a decision to enhance and improve the food menu and the venue now offers culinary delights which are as good as you will find in any restaurant and also very affordable. Choose from set dishes such as lamb curry, traditional fish & chips and sirloin steak and also keep an eye out for the numerous daily specials which are always excellent. Another feather in the 'St. James Gate'
cap is its location on the famous Rembrandtplein, which underwent a huge facelift in 2006 and St. James Gate is now the perfect place to view the new attractions and events which will take place, because they boast one of the finest outdoor terraces in Amsterdam and its open again after the winter break. Sky Sports television can be viewed via an excellent big screen or the half dozen or so televisions and other attractions in the bar include a pool table and a full range of English newspapers. Also keep an eye out for special events and live music. All in all, it's a great place to go and make sure you pay attention to their St. Patrick's Day Party on March 17th – It’s always memorable. The bar opens daily from 9.0am to 1.0am (3.0am at weekends). For further information, check out their website at www.stjamesgate.nl or you can e-mail them at: info@stjamesgate.nl GETTING THERE - Almost impossible to miss as it is situated in the heart of the famous Rembrandt Square. Question.: What is one of the most irritating aspects of Amsterdam bars? Answer.: The service.....just ask any of the city’s expats! Too many times, the simple words like ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ are swapped for a rude grunt or a look of disapproval and after a while, it becomes extremely annoying. Thankfully, some bars understand the importance of customer service and O ‘Reilly’s Irish Pub puts it top of their list. Located in the heart of the city behind the palace on Dam Square, O’Reilly’s has been in business for 12 years and their welcoming approach combined with a non-stop search for perfection has ensured their status is secure among the elite of Amsterdam’s cafes and bars. Once you sample their delights, you will almost certainly return for more. At O’Reilly’s, the staff treat you as they would expect to be treated if they were on the other side of the bar and few other venues in Amsterdam display such courtesy, friendliness and hospitality. However, good service is not the only plus-point. The homemade food is simply delicious and there is something to tickle everyone’s fancy on the extensive menu. Visitors can choose from international dishes like gourmet hamburgers, potato skins and nachos or they can also go for traditional favorites such as fish
& chips, bangers and mash or Irish stew. Full breakfast is served daily & they do a top notch Sunday roast. Don’t come too late however as it usually sells out. O’Reilly’s is also a landmark pub to watch the best live sporting action. There are two big screens, multiple plasma screens and surround sound in each separate area. The atmosphere during matches is inevitably busy, but always friendly & good humoured. The interior is comfortable, clean, cosy & charming. There are a number of distinct areas available, which allow for privacy but don’t cut you off completely from the action. Party menus and platters are available upon request. It also has a reputation for hosting one of the finest St. Patrick’s Day parties in the city, so check it out on March 17th. All in all, O’Reilly’s is a superb place to go, day or night. It’s one of the few Irish bars in Amsterdam, which is actually owned, run and staffed by Irish people. Believe us....There’s nothing plastic about these Paddies! The team there run a top quality pub and consistently deliver their promise to “make you feel at home away from home” GETTING THERE – O’Reilly is very easy to find, as it is located almost directly behind the Royal Palace on Dam Square. Trams, 1, 2, 5, 13 and 17 will leave you almost outside the doorstep.

Hoopman Irish Pub
A Tipple of Irish and a Touch Of Dutch
The Hoopman Irish Pub is situated at the corner of Leidseplein and has all the trimmings you would expect from a city centre Irish bar, as it is busy all day and all year round. You're never short of good company at The Hoopman and when you mix that with a wholesome selection of Irish beers and whiskeys to tickle the taste buds, a touch of Irish music to delight your ears and a food menu to warm the cockles of your heart, the end result is an excellent venue day or night. The bar also screens SKY Sports TV and the service is always good. The Hoopman is attached to two equally entertaining venues which are under the same ownership – Reijnders and The Hole In The Wall and the three also provide a stunning outdoor terrace which is located smack in the middle of Leidseplein. Reijnders is a large traditional Dutch brown cafe which was founded in 1880 and is steeped in history. Its success lies in the fact that it is big enough to hide away for a few
14
hours with your favourite tipple, yet cosy enough to enjoy the friendly atmosphere. The Hole In The Wall, is another genuine Irish bar where you always feel at home. Perks include daily English newspapers, a huge selection of drinks, live Irish Music and coverage of all big sporting events. This bar also caters for private parties in a large function room on the first floor. All three bars boast extensive and mouthwatering food menus which include dishes like Irish Stew, Beef and Guinness Pie and Fish and chips. They also offer a quality Irish breakfast and a superb roast dinner every Sunday. The Hoopman always makes a special effort on St. Patrick’s Day as they fly in musicians and dancers from Ireland for a day of non stop entertainment on March 17th. GETTING THERE - Leidseplein 4. Tel. 020-6381408. The Hoopman is impossible to miss as it is situated in the heart of Leidseplein.
Grand Cafes Cafe de Kroon
Perfect In Every Way No visit to Amsterdam is complete without a visit to a Grand Café. Sorry, let me rephrase that. No visit to Amsterdam is complete without a visit to the Grand Café De Kroon on Rembrandtplein. First class. That's the only way to describe Café De Kroon. Whether it's for morning coffee, an afternoon lunch, a graceful evening dinner or just drinks, this venue never disappoints and as well as being an ideal place for relaxation, it is also perfect for those who need to discuss business. The café can be found on the first floor of one of the biggest buildings on Rembrandtplein. Don't be fooled by the relatively small entrance, because once upstairs, you will be taken aback by it's size and splendour.
It's comfort all the way courtesy of the arm-chair style lounge-seating and another bonus is the view, as patrons get a perfect sight of the busy Rembrandtplein and all the new attractions of the area which were enhanced greatly in 2006 to celebrate Rembrandt’s 400th birthday.
The food menu is impressive both during the day and at night, and as you would expect, the service is also exceptional. Despite all these perks, prices are extremely competitive. So if Dutch-style fun and relaxation you're after make it your business to visit Café De Kroon. You won't be disappointed. GETTING THERE: Rembrandtplein 17. Tel.: 020-6252011. Located in the heart of the famous Rembrandt Square. The No.4, 14 or 9 trams will leave you almost on the doorstep.

Forget about booking a room with a view, because in Amsterdam it’s much more essential and entertaining to find a bar with a view. And if its sights and sounds you are after, it’s difficult to top the Majestic Café, Euro Pub, Café Zwart and Yip Fellows bars, all of which are situated on the famous Dam Square, and just a few yards away from the infamous Red Light District. The three bars boast stunning outdoor terraces which offer the perfect view onto the National Square of The Netherlands and offer visitors the chance to sit back and enjoy the street entertainers and the general hustle and bustle of the area. The general telephone number for all four bars is: 0031-20-4200563.
CAFÉ MAJESTIC
Dam Square 3-7 The biggest of the three cafes and in our opinion, the best is Café Majestic, which can be found directly beside the huge Bijenkoorf Shopping Center. If ever a name was suited to a café, this is it because everything about this place is truly majestic. Whether it be for lunch, dinner or light snacks, the food is as good as you will find in a top Amsterdam restaurant, the service is professional and friendly and the atmosphere is always excellent. The terrace is the biggest you will find on Dam Square and one of the most comfortable you will find in the city and it’s one of the best places to watch the Queen’s Day celebrations on April 30th.
The Dam Bars EURO PUB
Dam Square 3-7, Unit V The Euro Pub can be found a few steps down from café Majestic, beside the famous Krasnapolsky Hotel and is the perfect place to get the party started. A Rocking sound system, exceptional service, an impressive list of cocktails and shooters and a constantly lively atmosphere ensure that its fun all the way in The Euro Pub. This really is an ideal place to warm up before you tackle the clubs and other nighttime delights the city has to offer. It is also a popular haunt for watching sporting events.
CAFÉ ZWART Dam Square 15
Soaking up the sun at Cafe Zwart
In our opinion, this pub offers one of the best outdoor viewing positions in the city as you get the perfect view onto Dam Square itself and also the main road which leads onto the bustling Red Light District. However, it’s not just the view that is recommended, because the comfort, friendly service and the quality of it’s snacks and beverages are also top notch.

The ground floor houses the Grand Café and the chic interior, comfortable seating and excellent service make it the perfect haunt for activities such as morning coffee, lunchtime business meetings or evening drinks. Upstairs you will find the newly renovated restaurant which is impressive on the eye and the palate. Satellite Sports Cafe We all know that nothing can top the excitement of cheering on your team from the stands or terraces of their home ground, but this place provides Amsterdam's best alternative thanks to the superb lay-out, stunning atmosphere and excellent viewing positions. Unlike several other 'so called' sports bars in Amsterdam and various other European cities, the management of the Satellite Sports CafĂŠ have decided that if they are going to call their establishment a sports bar, then it is only fair and just that almost every sporting event of any consequence is shown on their screens. In short, they offer more sports than any person

And for all you English football fans out there, you can view up to five live games simultaneously on a Saturday afternoon (Yes Saturday!). What more could a soccer fan want? And lovers of the Spanish and Italian leagues will also be in for a treat as all games are covered. The ground level boasts 21 perfectlypositioned TV monitors, four plasma screens and a big screen and you will find an equally impressive bar upstairs as well as a big screen. The bar also offers an impressive eating menu which includes a good breakfast and

The cafĂŠ also boasts an impressive outdoor terrace which is perfect for viewing bustling and vibrant Leidseplein. You can also view the games from outside. One of the biggest bonuses of the bar is the service. Almost all the staff are female, and are among the most beautiful bar tenders and waitresses you will find. They are also friendly, efficient and love to join in the fun. GETTING THERE: Leidseplein 11. Almost impossible to miss, as it is situated on one of the corners of Leidseplein, beside Burger King. Big Shots Sports Bar & Grill
Situated within the Red Light District area on the famous Warmoesstraat, Big Shots Sports Bar and Grill opened its doors earlier this year and has become a hugely popular venue. This is one of the only bars in the city where we have discovered the mind-blowing drink Absinthe, but that’s only one of many reasons to visit Big Shots. It seems that everywhere you look in Amsterdam, there is a restaurant or some kind of eating establishment and how they all manage to stay in business is a complete mystery. During our time in the city, we have become especially fond of Indonesian cuisine and in particular that which is served by the magnificent Sampurna Restaurant on the floating flower market. If tantalizing tastes, incredible variety, an intimate venue and master-class service sound appealing, we only have two words for you: GO THERE. Pasta e Basta
Bringing The Stage To Your Table
Try to imagine sitting at a Broadway Musical and having the stars of the show personally serve you with some of the finest food and wine you can imagine. Dreamy huh? Well, the dream becomes a reality at the magnificent and world-renowned Pasta e Basta restaurant which can be found at Spiegelstraat, amidst the picturesque Amsterdam canal district. Firstly, the food is magnificent. Begin by choosing from a selection of cold antipastas, which are served from the main body of the Grand Piano and you can enjoy unlimited amounts, so don't be surprised to find yourself going back for a second helping. However, be careful to leave enough room for the main course, which you can choose from a selection of homemade pastas and finish off with one of Pasta e Basta's renowned desserts - such as the homemade tiramisu - to complete a memorable eating experience.
30
As good as the food is (and believe us, it is very good), one of the biggest attractions is the singing bartenders. Each and every one of them are gifted in the art of song and with the assistance of the resident pianist, they will stun you with their extraordinary talents. If these voices don't cause a shiver to run down your spine, there is something seriously wrong. The venue itself lies in the most exclusive part of Amsterdam known as the Golden Curve and when you consider what you receive, the prices are incredibly fair. All in all, superb from the first minute to the last. GETTING THERE - Spiegelstraat 8. Tel.: 020-4222222. Stand with your back to the Rijksmuseum and walk in a straight line and you will eventually come to Pasta e Basta. More info can be found at the web site : www.pastaebasta.com
Subway Rolls Into Amsterdam!
One of the biggest disappointments of Amsterdam is the lack of high-quality fast-food and casual-food eateries and this includes the mega-rich over-commercialised and well known fast food chains which time and again combine deplorable food with poor service. Thankfully, the situation has changed in recent times thanks to the arrival of the Subway Sandwich outlet on Reguliersbreestraat. Freshness, quality, healthy eating and taste are top priority at Subway and when you add those qualities to the service, ambience and value for money, you have the ideal venue to rid yourself of the munchies. The Subway restaurant can be found almost directly opposite the famous Tuschinski Movie Theater, close to Rembrandtplein and although they have only been open since winter, they are already gaining an excellent reputation among locals and foreign visitors. Customers can choose from delicious subs like Steak & Cheese, The Subway Melt, Chicken Fajita, Chicken Teriyaki, Spicy Italian, Veggie Delight and many more. You can also have your sandwich served on six different types of bread which include wheat, sesame, parmesan and honey-oat varieties.
As well as the sandwiches, they also offer other treats and snacks such as cookies, chips and donuts and clients can also avail of a full range of soft and hot beverages. They also offer a range of fresh salads and there is an additional option to create your own salad. The health-factor is an additional bonus to eating at Subway as they offer seven different subs containing 6g or less fat and every sub also contains a nutrition sheet so you can check exactly how many calories are going in your body. The interior of the restaurant is extremely clean and comfortable, with seating on two levels. We are particularly fond of the first floor
seating which comprises of some very comfortable armchairs. Another perk for business visitors is the free wireless internet service which is available inside the restaurant, meaning you can stay online while enjoying a delicious sub. Another thing which places subway in a higher division than its competitors is the quality service on offer. Service in many other fast-food outlets is extremely poor, but the management at Subway make it their business to ensure that the customer comes first and this policy also rubs off on their staff. So why not try the healthier fast food option and visit Subway. GETTING THERE - Reguliersbreestraat 27. Tel.: 020-6237030. Almost impossible to miss as it can be found close to Rembrandt Square, directly opposite the famous Tuschinski movie theater.

Torture Museum 'When Life Really Was A Living Hell' Amsterdam is famed for it's vast array of museums. Some are both fascinating and educational, but many are truly boring and provide as much stimulation as watching paint dry. The Torture Museum at Singel 449 falls into the first category and is really worth a visit. Nowadays, crimes and sins such as adultery and petty theft can go by unpunished, but that wasn't the case during medieval times and Amsterdam's Torture Museum offers hard proof of this through the various weapons and instruments of torture on display. The methods used to punish adulterating males and females are particularly interesting and you can almost feel the pain just by seeing and touching the various instruments, which include the Torture Chair, the guillotine and the rack to name a few. The museum also offers detailed explanations in six different languages about the different instruments and methods of torture which were used in medieval days. The dĂŠcor and lay-out of the two octagonal rooms adds to the sense of eeriness you experience during a walk through the museum and allows your mind to further adjust to the fear that the victims of the various tortures must have experienced all those years ago. The museum is open daily from 10.00am to 11.00 pm. GETTING THERE: Singel 449. Extremely easy to find as it is situated directly across the canal from the famous floating Flower Market. Every Night's a Saturday Night
If it's the club scene you are interested in, you have certainly come to the right place, because in recent years Amsterdam has grown to become one of the top clubbing cities in the world - The problem isn't finding the venues, it's finding the energy to enjoy them to the max. Even the hardest of clubbers struggle to last the pace in 'The Dam'. Dynamic party crowds are attracted to the clubbing scene and a host of top-name DJs are flown in from all over Europe at regular periods to spin the latest house music including acid

Inside Amsterdam’s Club Escape jazz, trance, techno and hardcore and much more. The most popular brands at the moment tend to be hardcore house, garage and techno, but if you shop around, you will also find smatterings of 70s retro and S&M etc. Most clubs open at 11.0pm and some go on until the early hours of the following morning. Remember to ask about the venues for the latest after-parties, because these events really can be exhilarating. A useful piece of advice for keeping up to date with the latest hotspots is to keep an eye on the thousands of posters which hang all around the city The one major down side to the club scene in Amsterdam is the strict and often nasty door policy. In many places, if you don't look good, you don't get in. The depressing part is that you probably think you look absolutely fabulous. RULES Here are a few tips on what you should and shouldn't do before, during and after you are at a club.
1. It can often be a disadvantage if you speak English. It's probably something to do with the bad reputation UK residents have abroad. So don't walk up to the door shooting your mouth off. Also don't approach the venues drunk or stoned because you have no chance of entry. 2. You may think you are ready and able for just about everything a Dutch club has to offer, but the likelihood is that you are not, so pace yourself. 3. Smoking a joint is widely accepted in most Dutch clubs and 'E' is generally accepted as part of the clubbing scene. The story is different with hard drugs and many of the clubs have installed facilities to detect those who use the hard stuff. 4. Try to behave when you exit the club. The natives don't appreciate loud-mouths waking them up at six o'clock in the morning. Take it from someone who used to live in Rembrandtsplein. 5. It's always a good idea to tip the doorman when you leave. Five Euro is usually enough and can sometimes ensure that the queue is shorter and the entrance policy more lenient when you visit again. 6. Don't get any ideas about making trouble inside or outside the club because the Dutch police force are always around, and can be severe. Piss them of and you will find yourself in a cell.

Tripping On The Weed
Amsterdam's Soft Drugs Scene
48
Amsterdam. Sin City. Sex and drugs capital of Europe, call it what you will. Perhaps the time has arrived when you've had your fill of sex, or at least made a deposit. Now your mind turns to things more spiritual. If you're wondering around the city centre, you are almost certain to be harassed by shady characters offering cocaine, extasy, acid etc. Avoid them at all costs. Even if hard drugs flick your switch, forget it, they are just as illegal here as anywhere else. However, marihuana, grass, pot, weed, hash, whatever you want to call it, is a different kettle of fish. Since the 70s, Holland has had the most liberal marihuana laws in Europe. But some of you may be surprised to learn that it's not strictly legal here, just tolerated. This may seem ludicrously hypocritical, as there are over 300 licensed coffee shops in Amsterdam alone and the government actually collects tax from them.
Now most of you reading this are probably experienced 'tokers' and were able to stick three skins together and build a spliff before you left junior school. If so, Amsterdam offers literally hundreds of varieties. Just enter a coffeeshop and ask to look at the menu. Prices vary from between five and 25 Euro per gram, with the more expensive being rare imported hashish (which has to be smuggled to get here) or Dutch hash, which comprises of almost 100 per cent pure T.H.C crystals. If you're a really experienced smoker, take my advice and sample the 'Super Silver Haze', believe me, it is different. Now we move onto the young or inexperienced smoker who thinks 'hey, this is Amsterdam. What the hell.' Go into the coffee shop, tell the guy selling the gear that you are a newcomer, ask for his advice, and take it. There are two main types of marihuana, indica and sativa, but most varieties here are a hybrid of the two. A good indica should produce a 'heavy stoned' effect and can be a bit of a conversation killer, while a satira will produce more of a high and can have you in fits of giggles, without ever knowing what you are laughing at. Marihuana is not dangerous, but it is a drug and doesn't suit everyone. If you feel paranoid or sick, just stop. You can drink and smoke at the same time (not literally, the spliff gets wet), but don't get pissed, then smoke your first joint, otherwise you will probably puke your guts out, fall arse over tit and wake up in a gutter somewhere. If you don't smoke, but would still like to be involved in the soft drug scene, try spacecake. Warning, it can take up to an hour or two to take effect, so don't sit there thinking it's crap before it's had time to kick in. To sum up, chill out, hang loose, enjoy but don't take it home, because not every government is as enlightened as this one. In association with:
Abraxas Coffee Shop Abraxas Coffeeshop has long been regarded as one of Amsterdam's finest coffeeshops and the praise is well justified. Located on Jonge Roelensteeg, a small alleyway linking the shopping street Kalverstraat with Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, it took four years for the management to make their vision of the perfect coffeeshop become a reality - It was definitely worth the wait. The shop offers a varied and quality smoker's menu as well as goodies like ready-to-smoke joints, space cakes and herbal beverages. And they are one of the few shops which sell space shakes and bonbons. The venue has five mystical floors, one of which contains a cannabis grow room. The art work on the walls is stunning and particular interest should be paid to the Egyptian-style wall at the right side of the main bar. Stare at it long enough and your trip could be even more memorable. The shop has also introduced a new “hotspot, allowing visitors to go online with their own laptop for free. A few doors down from the coffeeshop, you will find the newly opened Abraxas Souvenir Shop offering different kinds of smoking memorabilia, bongs, pipes and seeds.
And look out for the new Abraxas Coffeeshop at Spuistraat 51. It opened during the summer and as you would expect from the Abraxas people, it is already making a huge impact. Red Means Go! The most famous X-rated venue on the planet. Even the Pope is aware of what goes on at this place. Located in the area known as 'Wallen', it dates back to the 13th century, making it one of the oldest parts of the city. Prostitution has always been rife in the area, but it wasn't until the 18th century that the window ladies appeared. At that time, Amsterdam's port was extremely busy and sailors would visit the area seeking intoxication and the ladies of the night. Much has changed since then, but contrary to many reports, it isn't as sleazy or unsafe as most people imagine. The area is quite busy during the day, and when darkness falls, the atmosphere becomes vibrant and a fun time is guaranteed. The district has just about everything a sex haven requires. Live sex shows, peep shows, sexual theme bars, sex shops, porno video booths, lap dancing clubs, a sex museum and of course the infamous girls behind the windows. We have visited many of the venues in the area and have given our opinion on them. Enjoy the delights of this area and whatever you do, don't stop at these red lights!

Societe Anonyme
Our team has visited a number of Amsterdam's sex clubs over the past few months, and some of them have made a good impression. However, it has been difficult to find anything to top Societe Anonyme. The reasons for this are quite simple. When you visit a sex club, the four main things you look for are comfort, cleanliness, value for money and above all attractive girls - Societe Anonyme boasts all these attributes. Situated at Stadhouderskade 64, the elegant club has long been regarded as one of the best in the city. While at the bar, you will see a host of beautiful ladies, all of whom are well-educated, sophisticated and eager to satisfy your every wish. Visitors also have the opportunity to watch a professional pole dancing show and private lap-dances are also available. In fact, the club has placed a lot of effort into this new pole dancing venture in recent times and it is safe to say that not only is Societe Anonyme one of the best private clubs, at present it is just about the best striptease/pole-dancing club in Amsterdam. The club now boasts a number of newly constructed rooms which resemble something you would see in a 5-star hotel, such is their splendour. All rooms possess large Jacuzzi baths, plasma screens and a huge selection of adult and Hollywood movies.
