stablished in Liverpool in 2010 by the ever rakish Mo Adousa after working with a long list of luxury brands throughout Europe; the house of Signature Bespoke is regarded as one of the finest purveyors of tailoring excellence in the UK, on account of their ability to integrate sartorial classicism with modern sensibility. Their house style fuses the best characteristics of British and continental style - incorporating the fluid lines of Neapolitan tailoring whilst maintaining a structured approach of Savile Row tailoring and the dedication to artisanal precision which is the hallmark of French tailoring. The style has disseminated from Mo Adousa's extensive training in each geographical hub. In terms of the anatomy of Signature Bespoke garments, their cut is denoted by 'spalla camicia' shoulders, pronounced chest, lapel width, Milanese button holes and a distinctly tapered yet masculine cut. Of course, each garment is undertaken with due regard to the client's physical, contextual and stylistic needs.

The house of Signature Bespoke is currently spearheaded by Mo Adousa himself, with unrelenting support from Richard Gregson and Robert Tattan who have fostered their relationship with haute couture brands fusing their own modernist values with the vision of Mo Adousa. In particular, Signature Bespoke are renowned for their meticulous attention to detail, implementing stringent quality control measures throughout the production process to ensure a fit that a lot of tailors fail to match.

Chic has got the insider goss on the latest beauty trends! e look of the summer is the ‘Wilson Wave’. It’s glamorous, healthy and luxurious, and perfect for the summer. is look was created by Patrick Wilson, principal stylist at Electric Hairdressing in Harvey Nichol’s Beauty Bazaar. Patrick is a Fashion Week regular, assisting at shows including Victoria’s Secret, Topshop Unique and Julien Macdonald. You can get the look at home by following a few easy steps: 1.Preparation is key: Use a setting lotion on dry hair. Use L’Oreal Tecni Art Pli, applying it to the mid-lengths and ends. Comb through to evenly distribute the product. 2.Blast the product into the hair while tipping the head forward. is creates volume in the root area. 3. Divide the hair into 4 sections, starting at the nape of the head. 4.Using a small/medium tong, such as a GHD Curve, twistwrap the sections away from the face, and hold for 6-8 seconds. 5. Once the whole head is finished, leave the hair to cool down for approximately 5 minutes. 6. Brush through using a wide tooth comb to rake the curls out. Don’t be afraid to brush it out! 7.Finish off with a light serum and spray. 24

SHR stands for Super Hair Removal, a new technology that works by gradually heating the skin to a temperature sufficient to damage the hair follicles and inhibit re-growth, while the surrounding skin remains undamaged. e gradual heat build up offers a highly effective treatment, while the laser applicator actively cools the skin throughout. is unique technique makes the treatment virtually painless. Many of our clients are seeing a huge improvement right from their first treatment! On average, clients will usually require 6 treatments to achieve optimal hair reduction, though this differs depending on the client's hair, skin and the area treated. Our most popular body areas for our female clients are bikini, underarms and legs. Stubborn facial hair on the lip and chin area is also very popular. Our male clients are enjoying the benefits of SHR on upper back and chest areas. After a course of treatments, the results will last indefinitely with maintenance sessions as little as a couple of times per year.

can become very costly over time and will not inhibit regrowth of the hair, which is why many people are turning to laser hair removal for a more permanent, less painful option. With us being one of the first clinics in the North West to offer this innovative treatment, we have had celebrities from Hollyoaks as well as some of the lovely wives from our local football teams opting for treatment with us. Our prices depend on the area to be treated. ey start from as little as £45 per session, with extra discounts given when booking courses of treatment. Aesthetically You 25 Rodney Street Liverpool L1 9AR 0151 427 0014 www.aestheticallyyou.co.uk

Waxing and shaving can be both painful and cause irritation to the skin in the area. Many of our clients’ report shaving rashes and in-growing hairs through these traditional hair removal methods. e light emitted from the laser during SHR is not only effective at destroying the hair in the follicle, but is also linked to the stimulation of collagen. is means it can improve the quality of the skin, eliminating irritation and improving the skin's appearance. story of your client’s daily routine and lifestyle, most efforts to keep people in great shape become futile. I take all my clients through a thorough screening process to allow me to establish the best course of action. results you don’t always have to adhere to an incredibly strict diet. After analysing Amanda’s diet I found she was eating too many high starch carbohydrates. We simply removed bread and pasta from her diet and introduced more water and green tea. is made a great difference without forcing a harsh and unsustainable diet plan on her.

A m A n dA’ S JOurney Since starting with Lewis I’ve noticed an incredible difference in my body and although his training sessions are hard work I do actually enjoy it (when I’ve finished). Jokes aside, I’m amazed how I’ve managed to keep my figure whilst still living my same hectic lifestyle and only making a small few changes in my diet. Lewis is firm with me if I don’t stick to the rules and although it’s like being shouted at by your old school teacher, I know he’s right and he only wants to ensure I stay in good shape. e toughest part has been the training sessions as they are really intense and I sometimes feel sore for days afterwards. e diet has been far easier than I expected, once I tried Lewis’s alternatives for bread and pasta, I didn’t even feel as though I was on a diet. Because of my busy lifestyle I sometimes struggle getting organised with my diet so it far easier to use Lewis’s new supplements for when I have an incredibly hectic day. I know his supplements are 100% naturally derived from food with no additives, so, I can confidently use them whenever I need to. If anyone has a really busy life and doesn’t have much time to exercise and wants great results then I’d certainly recommend Lewis. Just be warned, he often catches me out on social media so he really does watch what you do outside of his private studios in Liverpool. ANTON STEPHANS

A n E xclusive Interview With

Anton Stephans

What made you want to become a singer, what is your earliest memory of performing? I've actually always considered myself an Actor/Singer. I guess that is why I'm so expressive when I sing. My earliest memory of performing was in the playground at primary school, I used to charge the other children two pence to listen and watch me perform the Michael Jackson O î Že Wall album.

ANTON STEPHANS

Was it difficult to adjust to the overnight fame which you experienced on the X Factor? e fame part is incredibly difficult to adjust to, I'm actually very private and protective of my family and friends. Suddenly being under the media microscope was uncomfortable at times. e responsible press were lovely to be honest. It is the gutter press that can shock you, the inaccuracies can be deeply wounding, but smart people see it for what it is. Us Brits are a smart lot! You have performed material by singers such as Jennifer Hudson, who would you say are your greatest musical influences now? My greatest musical influences now have to be those Motown singers of old. I love Gregory Porter, Anita Baker and Luther Vandross they are awesome singers.

Who were your music idols when you were growing up? Growing up it was all about Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Shirley Bassey, Donny Hathaway and Gospel Music. You have appeared in musical theatre productions, is this something you would like to do more of in the future? Yes I've performed on both the West End and Broadway stage in a number of shows and I definitely see myself doing more. In fact, I'm taking the lead role in a musical of Moby Dick this Autumn in London, I can't wait. What inspired you to take part in the X Factor, how do you think appearing on the show changed your life? I had spent so much of my career behind the scenes working for others, I wanted a chance to work for me. In the past my crippling stage fright would always stop me going for it, but I found some courage and got brave, here I am now and I'm so glad I did too.

ANTON STEPHANS You are used to performing to both large crowds and at more intimate venues, do you ever get nervous and if so what tips do you rely on to conquer stage fright? I always get nervous. I have to pee like a zillion times, ha ha! I tend to quiet myself, concentrate and say a gentle prayer. With the level of success you have attained, inevitably comes fame. Do you enjoy being famous and do you think there are any downsides to fame? Strangely, it feels like I've gotten more famous since leaving the show! I get over 500 messages a day from all over the world which is amazing. I enjoy the connection music can bring to us, I enjoy being a part of bringing something to people's lives. I'm still adjusting to being known though. I'm not complaining, just saying it is an adjustment. Where do you see your career heading in the future, is there a particular musical direction you want to take and do you have any plans to tour? Well so many incredible things are happening involving television, theatre and film. My love of music is definitely important too, so writing and recording the album is a priority. But honestly I'm open to all the new exciting things that have

and are coming to me. I've learnt the power of saying yes to the good, positive things in life. I've learnt to let go of anything that holds me down. Life is short and can be wonderful if lived bravely, fearlessly and with heart. You always look great and are known for your stylish ensembles, who is your style inspiration? î Žank you, I think it's important to look your best. Look good, feel good. I wear a lot of Stephen Williams suits because he is fantastic. Every time I wear his clothes I feel ready to take to the stage, the clothes are stylishly cut and beautifully sharp. I loved how Sammy Davis Junior dressed, that to me is a strong gentleman with masculine sexiness. What are your passions in life other than music, what do you like to do in your rare free time? Ha, I have very little time o but when I do it's all about family. My sister just adopted a baby boy, he is stunning so spending time with him is important. My godchildren mean the world to me so I'm trying to find time to be with them too. I love my job to be fair it's both my inspiration, passion and joy so I don't mind the hard work at all. I thrive on it. I love being busy.

ANTON STEPHANS

What piece of advice would you give to aspiring singers? Be smart, trust and believe in your own goodness and protect your heart, but don't be afraid to share it. It's our job to connect to people. Is there a singer you would like to collaborate with? I'd love to work with Josh Groban and Alfi Boe. We are different singers, but we would sound incredible I think. What songs do you have on repeat at the moment? e whole of Gregory Porter’s newest album, the track ‘Take Me To e Alley’ is stunning perfection. You seem to have a very special relationship with Liverpool and you often perform in the city. Can you tell us a little about what Liverpool means to you? e people of Liverpool have embraced me to their hearts. It's amazing, I feel like I am home whenever I am there. e people are warm, caring, respectful, kind and so stylish. I love it! Do you enjoy writing your own music, what inspires you when it comes to writing lyrics?

I love to write and everything inspires me. From heartbreak (I've had my fair share), to a walk with the dogs. ere is an underestimated skill in singing other people's lyrics though, I do enjoy putting my own spin on a classic. Where would you most like to perform in the future? I believe as a performer if you are not prepared to sing anywhere you don't deserve to sing in the best of places. I would love a gig at the Sage in Newcastle and would love to tour southern America too. I love to sing and perform so I'll do it in my living room if no one wants me, ha ha! What has been your favourite performance of your career so far? My very first X Factor audition at Wembley Arena, it changed my life and continues to do that. I'm grateful for that moment. "I Am Changing". Lastly, you have forged a great solo career, what is your ultimate advice for anybody who is trying to carve out a successful career in their chosen field? ere is only one of you on the planet! ere will never be another you on the planet, so be the best you that you can be. One life, live that life well.

KURTIS STACEY

Kurtis Stacey teams up with Bartle Productions as a Producer on their next film “Recoil” Recoil is a film that brings to life both a tragic and beautiful story, based on true events. Actor Steven Bartle plays ‘Alex’ a former Royal Marines Commando who finds himself on a dark & suicidal path in search of vengeance from the men that ended his career, his relationship and very nearly ended his life. However when he meets the love of his life, his obsession with revenge is put into question. We met with Steven and Kurtis to get the inside scoop on the new feature and this is what they had to say: Steven, as Recoil is based on true events can you tell us the inspiration behind the film? Before working in film I was a Royal Marines Commando but in 2009 I was involved in an altercation which left me blind in my right eye, leading to me being medically discharged from the military. My whole world came to an end and I went down a very dark and suicidal path, which very nearly ended my own life as well as a few others. ankfully after a few years, I was able to find my passion within film and in 2013 I was on the set of ‘Become the Legend’ with director Nick Cohen, when he showed an interest in my past. After listening to my dark stories he immediately said "we should make this into a film". At first I was hesitant, given the fact that it was an extremely delicate subject. However we then spent the next 2 years working on the script and now here we are, just a few months away from bringing Recoil to life.

get involved. It wasn’t until I met Steven that my mind was completely made up, just his physical presence and ambition towards acting and the film industry is very much like my own and we just hit it off. I have a lot of respect for someone who has gone through what he has and to come out stronger and more ambitious to succeed. at was all I needed to know to get me involved with the film, which already has a great line up of cast and crew. Director: Nick Cohen (Eastenders/Doctors) Exec Producer: Mark Forstater (Monty Python & e Holy Grail) Producer: Steven Bartle Producer: Kurtis Stacey DOP: Steven Cameron Ferguson (Won 2 Scottish BAFTA's in 2015) Male Lead: Steven Bartle (e Wild Card, Become e Legend) Supporting: Sabine Crossen (Hitman, Survivor, e Lord of the Rings) Supporting: Sean Cronin (Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, e Antwerp Dolls, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find em) Supporting: Kevin Leslie (Won 'Best Actor' for e Rise of the Krays) Recoil will be completed later this year ready for the Cannes film festival in 2017 and will be aired in multiple festivals around the world. is film can only be described as a rollercoaster of emotions and is sure to be a huge success. CLARE SOPHIA

INTERVIEW With Ellie Phillips

Issue 14

Clare SoPhia Ellie: How did you first discover that you could sing? Clare: I’ve been singing for a while to be honest. I was always into performing arts when I was younger. I was having lessons and taking part in little festivals and things like that, and it was just something that I loved doing. So yeh, I’ve always been passionate about it from a young age. at being said, I didn’t start taking it seriously until I left school. Ellie: So, you’ve been singing for a very long time, when did songwriting come into play? Well, I started off mainly doing cover gigs. I never considered songwriting. It was always just: I wanted to be a singer. at was the dream. en about 4 years ago a friend suggested that I have a go at writing, so I did. I started writing little bits and working with a couple of musicians. I realized quite quickly that it was something I loved doing and I could become creative with and as time went on I started getting better and better at it. Ellie: Do you still have any of your earlier attempts at songwriting? Clare: Haha yeh I do you know haha! Ellie: Haha are there any really bad ones? Any really cringe? Clare: You know what, it’s mad because they’re not actually bad, they’re just very simplistic. at’s how I’d describe them. But, to be fair, the guy I was working with when I was writing them was really good, and he taught me a lot. It was more of an R&B style I was doing initially when I was writing. ey were all very much lovesongs about boyfriends and the obvious stuff like breakups. I mean I wouldn’t rule them out actually! But that was like the whole concept of every single song. I actually need to show you them, don’t I? Issue 14

53

Clare SoPhia

Ellie: Haha! You really do! Claire: You’ll laugh, you’ll definitely laugh! Ellie: So you said R&B was the style you started off with, but that’s not really your style now, is it? Clare: I guess there’s always an element of that incorporated into what I’m doing, because you know it’s been a big part of what I’ve listened to from a young age. But, obviously my style is completely different from that now. at’s one thing I always say, it’s taken me years to find out what my style is and what feels right for me. Ellie: And what would you say that is now? Clare: Now, I mean obviously I’ve been doing a lot of the dance stuff, which I love! My last two singles were dance tracks. However, the EP I’m working on at the minute is Pop/Soulful Electronic. 54

Some of the tracks still have that dance element, but they’re completely different to anything I’ve done before. e first track I wrote for it, is called ‘Falling’ is very personal to me. e track really puts my feelings on the line I guess, about a past a relationship. It’s not something I’ve ever written about before. I can’t wait for you to hear it El. Ellie: You touched on your first two singles, take me through your debut single first. Clare: So, ‘Cold’ was my debut single. I wrote that acoustically on keys & then had it produced as a Pop/Dance track. Cold is about unrequited love. You’re not in love with the person, but you’ve still got feelings for them. You just can’t get close to them basically. So yeh, that was the first track, and I really wanted to get my love of dance music in, and Mike di Scala produced the tracks hes amazing! I actually wrote the track about two years ago, and it’s only just come out this year. I

Issue 14

guess things just take a lot longer than expected. Ellie: Take me through the follow-up single. Clare: So, ‘Voices’ was the follow up single, and I wrote that when I was in Ibiza a couple of years ago. I got the concept and the idea of what I wanted to do when I was there. It’s just a feel-good, summer romance vibe with a dance feel too it. Ellie: So talking of Ibiza, you went to Ibiza again this Summer, didn’t you? Clare: Yes I did, but the reason I was in Ibiza this time was for work, so it wasn’t as… well no it was fun haha! I was there because I featured on a track for these producers called Komo, which got signed. So the label flew me out to Ibiza to film the video there which was cool. I met some great people over there, and had an amazing team with me.

Clare SoPhia Ellie: Tell me about that track Clare: So, that track is called ‘Let Me Love You’. We basically re-did an old track, a 90s R&B track. It’s one of my favorite tracks from when I was younger so I was like ‘we have to do this track’. I think it’s current with the way things are going in the music industry at the minute. I sang the vocal on it, and Komo produced it. Ellie: So, three singles under your belt, and you’re in the LIMF Academy this year. Clare: Yeh, I just applied online for the LIMF Academy through recommendation of a friend. Ellie: What a great friend there haha! Clare: Haha! Yeh really good friend El! Haha! So I applied online, and wasn’t sure if I’d hear back and luckily I did. I’ve had a couple of meetings and met some great people through it, and it’s interesting because I actually looked at the line-up and there were a lot of artists on there that I’d never heard of before.

Music-wise you think you know everyone in the city but you just don’t. It’s just great to see all the different types of music coming out of Liverpool, and how keen people are in progressing. It’s great and I’ve actually done some collaborations, which I’m working on at the minute, with two of the other artists in the LIMF academy. It’s all about meeting people and working on different projects, finding your style and seeing what works and what doesn’t. Ellie: Coming from a city where there’s so much talent, and there are so many different genres and the artists are always of such a high standard, does that scare you? Does it make you work harder? Or does it just inspire you? Clare: I guess it makes me wanna work harder, because you know it is a cutthroat industry at the end of the day. And that is something I’ve realized massively this year, like just how hard it is. So I have to push myself, to get where I need to be. It’s most definitely a good thing, I want to be working with people who are better than me, because I want to

Issue 14

progress, so I want to be challenged. It’s a good thing 100%. Ellie: So what’s next for Clare Sophia then? Clare: So, there’s the release of Let Me Love You and I’m doing some more festivals. I’m working on a couple of different writing projects and my own EP (which you already know about)! I’m so excited! I know exactly the style and the route I want to go down with it, so I’m probably going to take a few months out and just focus on getting it to how I want it and things. e EP is the next big thing for me now.

Ellie: OK, dream scenario, where is Clare Sophia in five years time? Clare: I hate this question! I’d like to say I’ve signed a deal. Either a publishing deal or an artist deal, in some way shape or form, because ya know, that’s the goal at the end of the day. at’s what I’m putting in all this hard work for. I’d love to be writing for other people too.

MONONOKE

M

ononoke is an artist you want to keep your eye on. e incredibly talented Liverpool-born singer/songwriter is on the lips of every new music journalist right now. Intense, dark, and atmospheric is how Mononoke’s music sounds, and that’s before her hauntingly beautiful voice is even added into the mix. Her song-writing is layered, twisted storytelling, which invites listeners to explore the lyrics and find their own personal meaning in them. If you fall for artists who you instantly recognise the second their new music is played on the radio, then you are going to fall hard for Mononoke. With her debut EP released only weeks ago, she has already been added to Radio 1’s Best of BBC Introducing playlist, is regularly championed by Huw Stephans, and last month was named as one of Annie Mac’s #NewNames. Mononoke may have a dark sound, but she most definitely has a bright future ahead. Ellie: Who would you say are your biggest influences musically? Mononoke: I grew up on Fleetwood Mac so naturally Stevie Nicks is one of my biggest influences. Elliot Smith, Paul Simon and Dolly Parton are also pretty huge influences on my song-writing. Ellie: What is it about those songwriters that inspires you? Mononoke: ey were storytellers, all in completely different ways. Ellie: So are your songs all stories? Mononoke: Well my song ‘Alice’ is a story within a story: a new story within an old story. Ellie: How would you describe your sound? Mononoke: Minimal R&B pop

56

Ellie: You talk about social media. How important is social media for artists now? Mononoke: Social media has become so important for artists. I miss the days where I knew very little about an artist I was obsessing over. ese days you know what the artist had for lunch last Saturday and what his sisters boyfriends cousins dog is named. Ellie: Haha! So the really important stuff then!? Do you think it can be used as a form of creative expression though? Mononoke: Yes it can be. I also think social media has its good points. It’s a good way to become more aware of things you might have known or been exposed to before. Like what goes on in the farming industry or political issues you might not have been so invested in before, all because your mate you met last year in Magaluf reposts the guardian on occasion.

Ellie: Take me through your debut single. Where did the inspiration come from? What’s it about?

Ellie: What is your go-to then: Facebook, Twitter or Instagram?

Mononoke: I wrote ‘Silence For You’ about how we’re living in a time where social media is such a massive part of people’s lives. Relationships in any sense of the word are displayed only at their happiest.

Mononoke: I’m equally as bad at all three. I am trying to get better though. I have to since it’s such an integral part of this industry. It is nice to be able to connect instantly with people who are fans of your music.

Issue 14

MONONOKE Ellie: Your Instagram (MononokeOfficial) is very ‘artsy’, and the GIFs you have put out recently are really in line with that. Was there an over-arching concept or idea behind them all?

Ellie: Does coming from a city with such a huge musical heritage and thriving music scene make you work harder? Or does it just inspire you?

Mononoke: I’m a big David Lynch fan when it comes to TV or film, and a big Dali fan when it comes to art. I’ve always loved anything that is aesthetically beautiful but weird or creepy at the same time. I wanted to create that sort of atmosphere for my music.

Mononoke: Probably a little bit of both to be honest. I’m extremely proud to come from Liverpool. Liverpool is a city where you can go to the toilets on a night out and walk out of the toilets with a new best mate. ere’s no place in the world like it.

Ellie: Take me through the follow-up single to ‘Silence For You’.

Ellie: Tell me about your E.P.

Mononoke: ‘Graceland’ is the next song from the EP, I wrote half of Graceland in London and the other half in Berlin. Berlin is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever been to. I found it really inspiring. Graceland is about being part of a relationship and having no money, closing your eyes and imagining you’re all the places you want to go.

Mononoke: e entire process of making this EP has felt pretty insular, as I’ve only had a few people listening to the songs I’ve been writing. e actual release of the music feels like handing someone your diary, so having such a positive reaction has been really amazing.

Ellie: What is so special about Berlin? I’ve heard a lot of musicians are going there to write, why is that do you think?

Ellie: So, what’s next for Mononoke?

Mononoke: ere are a lot of great producers and writers over there. ere’s also a lot to be said about taking yourself out of what you’re used to and being creatively inspired by a completely different city. I had almost entirely written Graceland in London, but couldn’t quite finish it. I went to Berlin and it took about ten seconds with the ridiculously talented Tobias Kuhn (the writer/producer I went over there to work with) to figure out what was missing.

Mononoke: e EP is out this month and I’m just getting my live set together. I’ll also be featuring on singles for other artists, and writing for other artists too.

Ellie: Who would be your dream collaboration? Mononoke: Frank Ocean. I love his lyrics. I just love everything he does. I can’t put it into words.

Ellie: Where else in the world have you been to write? Mononoke: I’ve been to New York and Los Angeles. I’ve been very fortunate with my writing trips.

Ellie: Where can people see you perform live, or hear you online? Give all social media accounts and websites etc.

Ellie: Where would you like to go to write in the future?

Mononoke: Spotify or Tidal are probably the best ways of listening to my music, or you can pre-order my EP on iTunes.

I would love to go to Toyko, it’s been a dream of mine since I was little. I would love to film my next video there. Ellie: Why Toyko? Mononoke: Japan is about as different culturally as you can get. I’m utterly fascinated by that. I love the idea of going over there on my own and having to make friends and explore on my own. at is an idea so far out of my comfort zone, but I just feel like it’s something I need to do at some point in my life.

A taste of Brazil Fazenda Liverpool

by Camille Allcroft

Fazenda have restaurants in Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool so I went along to their Liverpool restaurant to try the new menu on a sunny afternoon recently. e restaurant is situated on a well-proportioned continental style square in the heart of the business district of the city, it has an elegant design aesthetic with an outdoor terrace and a spacious bar restaurant within. Petiscos are great to order when you are having a couple of glasses of one of the excellent wines offered at Fazenda, so we settled in the bar area at a table for two overlooking the outdoor terrace which was full of diners soaking up the afternoon sun. e first dish we tried was Pão de queijo, dough balls filled with cheese served with a slightly spicy dip on the side, a dish which proved to be a perfect way to start the meal as the dough was fluffy and the mild cheese filling worked well with the sauce. Next to arrive was a dish of Picantonas; these well-seasoned fiery sweet potato wedges delivered an intense flavour which was nicely balanced by the smooth sour cream dip they were served with.

Fazenda is famous for its rodizio style of dining, where select cuts of meat are served to you at your table echoing the traditional churrasco barbecues of Brazil which date back over a century. e style of dining at Fazenda gives guests an authentic taste of Brazil as the chefs, known as Passadores, cook the meat over the grill in an authentic way and there are over 15 prime cuts to choose from as well as an extensive salad bar stocked with fresh vegetables, cured meats and side dishes to complement the rodizio. Fazenda is a popular choice for diners who enjoy succulent meat and the slightly theatrical experience of having it served tableside and I have enjoyed dining there myself before, so I was intrigued when I was invited to try the new menu of Petiscos. ese are essentially the Portuguese and Brazilian equivalent of tapas, small plate dishes which like tapas are best enjoyed with good company. 68

Issue 14

Tropeiro, sausages with black beans topped with a perfectly cooked fried egg was another hearty dish packed with taste and I loved the way the egg worked with the black beans whilst the sausage rounded off this satisfying plate well. A slate of Picanha sliders were attractively presented with a succulent cut of meat served on a doughy bun, a gourmet version of the usual sliders which can be found on restaurant menus. e sliders paired well with the cassava chips which were an interesting alternative to potato chips served with a spicy dip, these reminded me a little of polenta chips which are a favourite of mine due to their crispy texture, and they were ideal to share. By this point the table was groaning under the weight of tasty plates and moreish Coxinhas, crunchy beef croquettes, were next to arrive. ese croquettes had a true depth of flavour from the beef and a slightly smoky background which I could imagine would pair beautifully with a good bottle of red. We thoroughly enjoyed the selection of savoury Petiscos which were full of bold, uncompromising flavours which spirited us away to Brazil with each bite, and there was still dessert to enjoy. We were presented with a brown paper bag

FOOD AND DRINK of some of the best Churros I have ever tasted, still warm, filled with chocolate and served with a melted chocolate dipping sauce these were a truly indulgent treat. Lastly we were served a box of Brigadeiros; a popular dessert in Portugal and Brazil these are balls of rich fudge rolled in chocolate and chilled to create a cool and delicious combination. Petiscos are definitely worth trying, they are a refreshing twist on the small plates trend which has been around for so long and this is an interesting and convivial casual dining experience. I can see that dropping in for Petiscos at Fazenda will quickly become a popular new dining choice which is ideal for lunchtime or as an accompaniment to relaxed evening drinks.

I have dined there many times over the years and it has long been a favourite of mine for its consistently good food and service, so I was eager to try the new menu which has just been updated to include several dishes for spring and summer. It is nice to see restaurants changing their menus in this way to reflect the seasons and the dishes at Olive show a real flair for the use of ingredients which work in harmony together. ere is a welcoming and relaxed ambience to the space, with an intimate bar and a restaurant area which has a simple yet contemporary design aesthetic featuring an open kitchen. After a warm welcome we were led to a cosy table for two where we ordered a bottle of the house red, Il Banchetto, a soft Italian wine with plenty of raspberry and cherry. To start off with we shared a garlic pizza bread topped with melted mozzarella, this tasty bread is always a wise choice at Olive and I must also mention the pizzas which are some of the best I have tried, with a thin and crispy base which tastes authentically Italian. As a starter, I selected the butternut squash soup with dolcelatte crème fraiche and toasted seeds, which was hearty 70

and thick with sweetness from the butternut squash whilst the crème fraiche added a sharp balance and the toasted seeds gave the dish a crunch of texture. My dining companion enjoyed tender chicken skewers with romesco dipping sauce, the chicken was cooked to perfection and the sauce complemented the dish well whilst thinly sliced chillies added a fiery bite. e menu at Olive offers a choice of pizza, pasta and grill dishes as well as salads and seafood. I went for the grilled corn-fed chicken with truffle butter, green vegetables and sorrel cream for the main course; the succulent chicken worked well with the freshness of the vegetables and the truffle butter and cream added further complexity of flavour resulting in a dish perfect for spring and summer which I would order again. e gnocchi with slow roasted pork, cherry tomatoes, pesto and rocket was a plate which delivered a real taste of Italy, with a generous portion of firm and fluffy gnocchi and a depth from the slow roasted pork, tangy tomatoes and pesto. is was a satisfying dish which delivered on both flavour and presentation. It is a must to order the courgette fries when dining at Olive, thinly sliced courgette is coated and then fried to create a dish which makes the perfect side order with any meal, just be warned that these are not easy to share!

FOOD AND DRINK It was time for dessert and the only difficulty was what to choose from a menu including sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie. We decided to sample some of the new additions to the menu, a salted caramel cheesecake with crème fraiche and a tiramisu trifle. I love tiramisu and it feels essential to order it when dining at an Italian restaurant, the tiramisu trifle was rich and sweet with a boozy kick and a nice style of presentation as it was served in a jar. e salted caramel cheesecake was equally good, an excellent baked cheesecake evocative of the streets of New York with fresh strawberries and crème fraiche completing this delicious dessert. Service at Olive is always friendly and pleasant and the team are very knowledgeable about the menu, and more than happy to talk you through the options and recommend dishes to you. It is not difficult to see why Olive is always a popular choice on Castle Street and it is pleasing to see a firm favourite like this more than holding its own against some of the more recent additions to the dining scene in the area. For classic Italian food as well as a choice of dishes to appeal to everybody, a visit to Olive is always a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. 60 Hope Street Liverpool by Camille Allcroft

S

tanding proud in the heart of the Georgian Quarter of Liverpool, 60 Hope Street is a grandiose Grade II listed former townhouse which is now a restaurant, bar and lounge. Sweeping up the steps to the imposing doorway, it already feels as though you are in for a treat and the airy restaurant space opens up within, with wooden floors and tables decorated with vases of flowers. e homely atmosphere is instantly welcoming and we were led to a table by the window giving us a view of both the dining room and the street outside. e Table d’hôte menu offers good value and a wide selection of dishes and the chefs place a great deal of emphasis on the use of local and seasonal produce, such as Claremont Farm Asparagus, Menai Mussels and Lancashire chicken. We started the meal with a couple of glasses of chilled prosecco which was dry and refreshing, the perfect fizz to usher in the weekend. ere is an impressive wine list on offer at 60 Hope Street, including a choice of red, white and sparkling as well as a selection of ‘cellar favourites’ which include some popular choices such as Tempranillo and Shiraz. I decided on Welsh rarebit to begin the meal, which was simple and hearty with a richness from the mature

cheese and a sharp contrast from the accompaniment of heritage tomato salad. My dining companion enjoyed the goats curd with beetroot and truffled honey dressing, a dish presented in a fine dining style which delivered a beautiful set of flavours. e goats cheese was creamy and strong, contrasting well with the earthiness of the beetroot and the sweetness of the truffled honey dressing. My main course of Glamorgan sausages was a satisfying dish, with vegetable sausages in a crunchy coating served with summer greens including wonderfully crisp asparagus and onion jam which sat well with this dish, offering a tangy counterpoint. e Lancashire chicken breast with broad bean linguine and watercress purée was a refined main course which demonstrated that you do not need many ingredients for a dish to be exceptionally good. e tender chicken was well met with the linguine which was satisfyingly fresh with a hint of mint and citrus. is was a dish perfectly suited to the spring and summer season, and the fresh pasta was as good as any I have tasted in some of the best Italian restaurants. Ordering dessert at 60 Hope Street is always something of a conundrum as there is a selection of tempting options

FOOD AND DRINK available such as the intriguing deep fried jam sandwich with carnation milk ice cream (which I am determined to try on my next visit) as well as classics such as chocolate fondant and a slate of British and Irish cheeses. My dining companion ordered the Perle Las with Bara Brith, I thought this combination of sweet and savoury worked well, the creamy Carmarthenshire blue cheese was delicious with the slightly spicy Bara Brith, a welsh fruit loaf which is always a favourite of mine. e second dessert of chocolate caprice was an indulgent delight, the chocolate caprice was so rich, reminding me of a brownie, and the meringue and pistachio added texture whilst the sorbet delivered a contrasting refreshment. is caprice was an all-round perfect dessert, which I would recommend to any chocolate lover. We relaxed over coffee, drinking in the surroundings of this stoical and elegant restaurant which manages to combine old and new. I appreciate the use of local and seasonal produce and the dishes show a flair for the pairing of flavours which complement each other. ere is plenty on the menu to appeal to everybody and the restaurant regularly hosts events such as wine tastings and gin & jazz evenings, so there is plenty going on to look out for. 60 Hope Street is located in one of my favourite areas of Liverpool and it is always a pleasure to dine there due to the consistently good food and service. e restaurant combines the sophistication and grandeur of a bygone era with menus which illustrate the successful melding of classic and contemporary cuisine.

Malmaison Brasserie Liverpool by C am i ll e A l l cro ft

T

here is a burgeoning dining scene in Liverpool which is growing more and more of late and it is fair to say that there is a restaurant in the city to appeal to everybody, offering many different styles of cuisine. One place I had not dined until recently was Malmaison Brasserie, located within Malmaison hotel and serving an array of contemporary cuisine including seafood and grill 74

dishes as well as afternoon tea, Sunday lunch and the famous Mal burger. e hotel is located close to the river and the minimalist architecture makes the building immediately striking. We were warmly welcomed within and we took our seats for pre-dinner drinks in the spacious Malbar which has a relaxed feeling with plush seating, warm colours and an impressive cocktail menu. Issue 14

We sipped chilled champagne as we looked over the Brasserie menu, impressed by the array of choices on offer. Before long, we were shown through to the Brasserie and seated at a table by the window which gave us an expansive view of the outdoor terrace. After a selection of juicy olives and some excellent artisan stone baked bread (baked in house) with oils and butter, we sipped our wine.

FOOD AND DRINK crispness to the outside of the meat. Sticking with the seafood theme, I went for the lobster risotto, a rich delight of carnaroli rice with lobster, lobster bisque and a swirl of creamy mascarpone. Risotto is always one of my favourite comfort foods and this rustic dish was given a luxurious spin from the sweet and meaty lobster whilst grated parmesan added to the indulgence.

A bottle of the wine of the week was chilling in an ice bucket, MenetouSalon Morogues, Domaine Pellé which was crisp and zesty with a hint of gooseberries. is wine was an excellent companion to my choice of starter, the tempura of calamari and prawns which had a light and bubbly batter which paired well with accompaniments of wasabi mayo, sweet chilli sauce and a topping of finely sliced fiery pickled chilli. My dining companion enjoyed an aromatic soup of spiced sweet potato, which had an exotic taste, a silky texture and a hint of lemongrass.

e biggest crème brûlée I have ever had the joy of eating was presented to me at dessert, which paired incredibly with the 2011 Chilean Éclat dessert wine with layers of honey, apricots and figs. is wine pairing was recommended to us by the knowledgeable sommelier. e crème brûlée had that perfect topping which shattered appealingly beneath the spoon to reveal smooth and creamy custard within, which had just the right hint of vanilla. A slab of Valrhona dark chocolate tart with passion fruit sorbet reminded me exactly what a dark chocolate tart should be, with no hint of the overpowering sweetness sometimes found in chocolate tarts. is dessert was a bitter delight lifted by a tropical flourish from the passionfruit.

e starters gave us a taste for more, so we moved on to mains with enthusiasm. Pan roasted Black Angus New York strip steak was the choice of my dining companion, this great marbled steak delivered on flavour and tenderness and it was cooked to medium rare perfection. is was available in four different weights (250g, 350g, 450g or 550g) with classic sauces such as Béarnaise or butter. is dish was meltingly perfect with au poivre sauce and an accompaniment of truffle and Parmesan pommes frites, whilst the pan roasting added a delightful

We headed back into the bar to round off the evening with a couple of after dinner drinks, I enjoyed a heady Patron espresso martini with Absolut and sugar syrup as my dining companion sipped a double espresso and we soaked up the intimate, low lit ambience. e hospitality at Malmaison was great throughout, with attentive and friendly service from the personable (and ever-smiling) team. e food was excellent with an obvious attention to detail shown in the quality of the dishes, as well as abundant portions and bold flavours. is was a meal which satisfied in every way from the first bite of stone baked bread to the last forkful of the stunning Valrhona chocolate tart. ere is something to appeal to everybody at this European style brasserie and I look forward to dining there again soon.

A voyage to India Scene Indian Street Kitchen : Manchester

by Camille Allcroft

I

love to dine out in the Spinningfields area of Manchester, there is such a great choice of restaurants in the locale and some equally good bars for after dinner cocktails. Scene Indian Street Kitchen is a popular restaurant which has an outdoor terrace at the front where guests can enjoy shisha as well as a riverside terrace at the other side, which is sure to be the place to relax this summer. I was curious to try Scene for myself after hearing plenty about it recently and it is carving out quite a reputation for its fusion dishes, street food and take out tiffin boxes. e friendly team made us feel instantly at home and we were led to a window table overlooking the riverside terrace, where our meal commenced with crisp poppadoms and a selection of chutneys. Scene has a modern and welcoming atmosphere, with soft lighting, intimate booths and an open kitchen where you are able to observe the chefs at work. We ordered chilled house white wine and a rich, creamy mango lassi which was very good indeed. e menu at Scene consists of many familiar Indian dishes,

78

Issue 14

which are available alongside house specialities. We decided to order a selection of starters to share, and when the dishes arrived everything was plated in an appealing way. I tried the jingha til tinka first, king prawns marinated with sesame oil and freshly ground spices, coated with breadcrumbs and fried until golden. I liked the idea of this fusion dish, which combined Oriental and Indian influences and the prawns were large and succulent. A dish of keema kulcha was a revelation, a doughy naan bread filled with tender minced lamb, spices and coriander, a filling which delivered on flavour without being too heavy. I can never resist good onion bhajis and those at Scene were crispy and golden with a spiced onion filling which went so well with the array of chutneys on the table. e samosa chaat was a favourite of mine, with light filo pastry and a tasty filling of potato and chickpeas, crowned with yoghurt, mint and tamarind chutney. Succulent chicken tikka, marinated in ginger, garlic, coriander, cumin, turmeric & lime juice was full of flavour, whilst the charcoal grilled lamb chops proved to be just as moreish, with juicy meat marinated in a tasty blend of spices.

FOOD AND DRINK

My main course of dhaba murgh was everything a curry should be, hearty and complex with layers of flavour. e chicken was cooked to perfection and the thick sauce contained spring onions, fresh coriander and traditional spices resulting in an exquisite Punjabi dish. e cheese kulcha was the kind of bread and cheese combination I can never say no to, fresh naan bread stuffed with mild cheese and coriander and baked in the tandoor. is broke apart so easily with the soft bread giving way to reveal the melted cheese, this was the kind of food you just do not want to share. We also enjoyed the laccha paratha, an exotic layered bread enriched with butter and baked in the tandoor, which was surprisingly light yet with enough richness from the butter. e chicken makhani was equally tempting, a creamy curry cooked with onions, tomatoes, sultanas, almonds, pineapple, fresh cream, butter and a selection of mild spices. is had an exotic flavour to it and the tangy tomatoes worked well against the creaminess of the coconut. Fluffy basmati pilau rice provided the ideal counterpart to these delicious curries and after such a

monumental feast we decided against ordering dessert, instead opting to relax and enjoy the ambience by flickering candlelight. Scene Indian Street kitchen is the place to head for if you are a fan of Indian food, every dish was excellent and showed real flair for a style of Indian cuisine which combines sophisticated flavours with quality ingredients. I thought the menu demonstrated an interesting combination of influences, with enough specialities to keep more adventurous diners satisfied as well as familiar favourites. I will be going back again and I am already looking forward to the next time I dine there.

New York cool in Spinningfields Artisan Manchester

I

have long been a fan of the cool and contemporary surroundings of Artisan, Manchester which is located in the stylish Spinningfields area of the city, buzzing with restaurants and bars. Artisan is not only a restaurant but rather a loft style space, somewhere to meet, eat, drink and relax. Art lines the walls of the vast area, most of which is available to purchase and the whole place has a spacious New York aesthetic with a slightly industrial feel to it. e private dining room is the ideal place to celebrate a special occasion and the bar is one of the hot spots in town to meet up for some evening cocktails. ere is an eclectic soundtrack playing at all times of the day and the ambience makes you want to stay that little bit longer than you planned. I went along recently to try some of the new menu, which aims to tantalise with casual dining including light salads, flatbreads and seafood dishes as well as comforting main courses and steaks. 80

A salad of summer greens, kale, garden peas and sugar snap peas, dressed with herb vinaigrette really woke up the taste buds with exciting flavours, this was summer on a plate with a real vibrancy to it. We shared a charcuterie and cheese board which groaned under the weight of Morteau sausage, prosciutto, pastrami, flatbread, Camembert, Pecorino and couscous. is was well presented and it really delivered with a wealth of flavours from the meat selection, complemented by the cheeses and flatbread whilst the couscous added an enjoyable extra element to the board. We also sampled a chicken liver and rum pâté with golden raisins, sealed with chia seeds. e golden raisins and rum put an interesting spin on a traditional chicken liver pâté, adding a sweet and boozy quality to this starter which was served with crisp melba toast. Some interesting flatbreads on the menu at Artisan include smoked salmon, prosciutto and mozzarella and chicken and chorizo. I went for the heritage tomato and mozzarella

FOOD AND DRINK flatbread with red onion, garlic and rosemary oil. is was a zesty and bright summer dish, with plenty of tang from the heritage tomatoes balanced out by the creamy mozzarella. Confit duck leg with chickpea cassoulet was one of the stars of the show, a rich and hearty dish which showed a real finesse, with flavoursome duck and a rustic quality from the cassoulet which made this dish equally good as a winter warmer or a filling main course in summer. Salmon en papillote with summer greens was elevated to the next level by the inclusion of a ai green curry which sat well against the succulent salmon, bringing aromatic and exotic qualities to the dish and again proving that the healthier option does not have to be dull. Other tempting mains on offer include paper baked sea bass and seared tuna with spiced lentils, so there is plenty on the menu to please seafood lovers. If you want something slightly more indulgent, there is still plenty on the menu to appeal, such as the Artisan burger and 10oz ribeye steak with matchstick fries, roast garlic and herb sauce. e meltingly perfect steak was complemented by the sauce and the matchstick fries proved to be a classic companion to this dish. For dessert, options such as sticky toffee pudding and hazelnut chocolate brownie are bound to thrill, but there are lighter dishes available too with seasonal berries in abundance. I chose the Italian pistachio meringue with lemon, Chantilly cream, berries and pomegranate. is was a real winner, providing a tangy and sweet balance of flavours whilst the pistachio meringue added a pleasant crunch to the dish. e second dessert I sampled was vanilla, yoghurt and honey mousse with fresh berries and pistachio; the creamy mousse was well met with the fresh berries and the honey really came through adding a wonderful depth to the mousse. Service was friendly and attentive throughout and the team at Artisan were well informed about the menus as usual, which is useful should you have questions or need any recommendations. e whole meal was relaxing and there was a host of flavours to enjoy as well as some exciting new twists on classic dishes. ere is plenty to choose from on the drinks front at Artisan too, with a varied selection of cocktails, beers and wine available. We sipped a refreshing Rioja Blanco with our meal, which was the ideal wine to go with this summertime feast, every bite of which left us feeling contented.

The Botanist Leeds by Camille Allcroft

I

always like to have a reason to visit Leeds, one of the most thriving cities in Yorkshire which has a blossoming bar and restaurant scene with many new venues opening regularly. I went along for cocktails and a bite to eat at e Botanist in Trinity, Leeds and it is definitely on the hot list of bars in the city for those evening drinks or a tempting dish from a menu which revolves around a casual dining style of food. e rustic feeling created by stripped back wooden tables and gardening themed ephemera is juxtaposed with slightly industrial touches such as caged lighting and wrought iron details, whilst plant pots and wooden shelves lend to that potting shed appeal and an eclectic selection of artworks line the walls. Masterclasses are also available if you want to get more involved with your cocktail making and live music on many evenings adds a real buzz to the warm and welcoming venue. I settled in at the sweeping bar area to enjoy some cocktails, the menu is extensive featuring Botanist signature creations as well as some more familiar favourites and a list of nonalcoholic choices including watermelon dew and strawberry

milk. First up for me to sample was e Botanist signature cocktail, a delicious and refreshing blend of Ketel One vodka, rum and elderflower liqueur served in a tall glass over crushed ice. is cocktail is just the thing for a warm summer evening and it tastes as good as it looks with a vibrant appearance which catches the eye. e next treat of the evening was the Kiwi and Sage Martini, I liked the appearance of this and although served in a classic martini glass it was anything but ordinary with light and bright flavours and a fresh kiwi garnish evocative of the tropics. One of the homemade houmous boards with crudités and bread is the ideal accompaniment to enjoy with your drinks and this dish is always popular at e Botanist, as are the beef or chargrilled chicken burgers served with seasoned chips, and you can customise your burger with toppings. One of my favourite drinks to order on an evening out has to be a Pornstar Martini, so it seemed only fitting that I rounded off my cocktail selection with a Botanist Pornstar, served with a shot glass of prosecco on the side this cocktail always seems extra special with its passionfuit decoration. e Botanist take on a classic Pornstar Martini is slightly different with sugar snaps and passionfruit muddled with

strawberries, rose sugar syrup, pineapple and lemon juice with Ketel One Vodka and passionfruit liqueur. e watering can cocktails are a great choice if you are out with friends, served in a watering can as the name would suggest these cooling concoctions are ideal to share with varieties such as rum, cherry and thyme available. If cocktails are not your thing, there is an impressive list of gins on offer at e Botanist curated from the best gins across the country such as Liverpool Gin and Mason Dry Yorkshire Gin and there are botanical brews for those who prefer a beer. ere are plenty of smaller snacks to nibble on whilst enjoying your drinks too, such as padron peppers, salt and pepper onion petals and olives. e menu has a wide range to choose from including favourites such as fish and chips as well as dishes perfect for sharing including baked camembert, deli boards and rotisserie chicken which is always a satisfying meal. I went for the award winning sweet potato and spiced lentil pie served with chips and curry sauce, which proved to be the perfect comfort food dish with buttery pastry and a flavoursome filling. ere are plenty of lighter main courses for those feeling less

indulgent, with pan fried seabass fillets and superfood salad both sounding like tempting options. is is a perfect spot to head to when you are doing a little shopping or sightseeing in the city and the Sunday Roast is also a must with roast chicken or roast beef served with all the trimmings. e lemon posset tart with summer fruit coulis I had for dessert was sunshine on a plate, a zesty treat which conjured up the Mediterranean. Quirky, stylish surroundings and friendly service which runs like clockwork are further plus points to e Botanist which is always a good place to relax over a few drinks or a meal and there is a cosy ambience to the interior design aesthetic which makes it feel like a home away from home. e Botanist 67 Boar Lane Leeds LS1 6HW 0113 205 3240 www.thebotanist.uk.com

R

ustic Italian inspired menus served in New York style surroundings is a succinct way to summarise Gusto Leeds, located on Greek Street in the centre of the city. Polished wooden tables fringed by leather banquette seating, parquet floors, a large bar area and warm lighting are just some of the features which give the impression that you have walked on to the set of a film when you arrive in the restaurant. ere is a refined ambience throughout which to me echoes the understated glamour of some restaurants in downtown Manhattan. I settled on a high stool at the bar to partake of a cocktail or two before dinner, the impressive list features Gusto signature cocktails and I enjoyed a delectable lemon and thyme martini and a peach boulevardier with Bulleit bourbon stirred with Aperol and crème de pèche garnished with flamed orange. I started the meal with a classic tomato and mozzarella salad, a light and bright flavour pairing which always works well with the zesty tomatoes perfectly juxtaposed with creamy mozzarella. I also sampled the Burratina mozzarella with pane gratuga, bitter lemon purée and pickled radicchio, a well-balanced dish which delivered a wealth of subtle flavours. rolled meat balls in a spiced tomato sauce and handmade gnudi. I was treated to a sampling of the deli boards on offer at Gusto, which are simply presented with a garnish of marinated Mediterranean vegetables and rosemary focaccia. You can customise your own board, choosing charcuterie and cheese from the selection available and I combined a variety of mozzarella, prosciutto and salami ventricina which was well balanced with the juicy olives and sundried tomatoes. ere is a varied selection of main courses to choose from at Gusto and you will find the usual Italian favourites such as pizza, pasta and risotto with an interesting twist of flavour combinations like smoked haddock risotto and Peking pizza topped with roasted crispy duck and hoi sin sauce. It is good to see such a wide range of dishes on the menu and as well as those inspired by Italian influences, main courses such as roast monkfish tail with a curried mussel sauce and smoked garlic oil give a nod to contemporary fine dining and the 28 day aged premium steaks always prove popular too. After perusing the pasta section of the menu, I opted for the garganelli primavera with summer vegetables, pine nuts, Grana Padano and chicken served in a creamy sauce. is

FOOD AND DRINK pair beautifully with a glass of dessert wine such as the excellent Passito Carlo Pellegrino from an island o Sicily and if dessert wine is not your thing I would suggest trying the tiramisu martini which is one of my favourite dessert cocktails. I enjoyed my meal at Gusto Leeds and with so many classic and contemporary dishes on oer, an expansive drinks selection and an air of cool glamour it is just the place to go for a lingering lunch or a relaxed dinner. It is easy to see why this is a consistently popular choice of dining destination in the city which is ideal for both dinner and cocktails or simply as a stylish venue for a few drinks with friends.

hearty pasta dish is a satisfying choice with tender chicken and added texture from the pine nuts whilst the summer vegetables brought in further appeal. Another choice I would recommend is the roast chicken breast with creamed leeks, tomato and caper dressing and fried gnocchi, which has a superb balance of ingredients which complement each other well. If you still have room left, there is a wide array of both rich and lighter desserts to choose from to conclude your meal and the summer berry and prosecco jelly sounded refreshing whilst sticky toee pudding is hard to equal when it comes to a truly classic dessert. I ordered the almond milk panna cotta with honeycomb, flaked almonds and lemon curd a dish perfectly suited to summer with bright flavours and a zesty layer from the addition of lemon curd. One dessert which is a must to try at Gusto if you have not already is the Nutella and mascarpone calzone, a freshly baked doughy crescent which is a delight served with vanilla ice cream. Beverley now has the X Factor after a celebrity launch of new gastro pub The Potting Shed.

G

uests at a VIP night were treated to performances by finalists from the ITV reality show, Anton Stephans and Kiera Weathers.

e two singers, who won millions of fans on last year’s show, wowed guests with live vocal sets to celebrate the opening. e Potting Shed, a multi-million pound transformation of the former landmark pub Hodgsons in Flemingate, attracted a glamorous crowd of famous faces for its first night. Big Brother favourite, model and stylist Sam Giffen, who cheekily claimed to be the best looking in the BB house this summer, joined pals and models Charlotte Dawson and Amanda Harrington and fellow ex-Big Brother contestant Mark Byron in a stunning quartet of guests. Rachel Rhodes from ITV2’s Ibiza Weekender also attracted plenty of paparazzi attention as she arrived for the launch, along with cast members from Emmerdale, former soap star Kurtis Stacey and a crowd of rugby players enjoying a well-earned night off training. More than 600 guests packed out the pub, which has a quirky garden theme, enjoying free-flowing Perrier Jouet champagne, Hendricks gin and fabulous cocktails. e night was a sneak preview of what regulars can expect from e Potting Shed when it officially opened its doors. New owners, Leeds-based Burning Night Group, have lavished more than £1.5million on the venue, creating a modern bar and restaurant which is full of fun touches including brightly-coloured wooden garden sheds in the gardens and an indoor upstairs patio area complete with boxed hedges. e pub promises to be family and dogfriendly, with menus focused on ‘feeding, watering, sharing’, although with leading drinks brands such as Hendricks and Perrier Jouet at the forefront of a drinks menu which also features craft ales, world lagers and fine wines, it intends to become a place to see and be seen too. e Beverley Potting Shed, which offers striking views of the Minster, is the second to be opened by Potting Shed Trading Limited, which made its debut 16 months ago in Bingley, West Yorkshire. Already a huge success, the company has plans for further sites in the near future.

Hesketh Golf Club

Hesketh, founded in 1885, is the oldest of Southport’s five golf clubs; although it was initially known as the Southport Golf Club. It is set amidst the towering Victorian villas of Southport’s premier residential area – Hesketh Park, it stands alone on the crest of a tall sandhill, with the eye catching clubhouse dominating the golf course, and the surrounding district.

Hesketh was established as a professional championship course in the 1930s and has acted as a qualifying course for the Open Championship. Most recently it has held the R&A Junior Open and the R&A Amateur Championship Qualifying Rounds. In 2018 it will cohost the English Men’s Amateur.

Hesketh has made a major impact on the world of golf over the years and in addition to being closely associated with the formation of the Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs, the initiative to form the English Golf Union originated at the Club and the first President of the EGU, Mr Rayner Batty, was a Hesketh member.

HesketH golf club

e Club has a distinguished record in competitive golf and its members have included the Bentley brothers, Harry and Arnold, whose joint success as amateur golfers is unlikely to ever be equalled. More recently European tour players Lee Slattery and Matthew Baldwin have been members of Hesketh.

Manchester Golf Club

Harry Shapland Colt designed this superb course which first opened to members in March 1912. Apart from relatively minor modifications the general layout of the course has remained much as Mr Colt originally designed it. Colt described the course as follows: ‘e general contour of the land is really delightful from a golfing point of view and resembles more the undulating character of a good seaside course than any other inland course that I have ever seen.’ Praise indeed from the architect who in designing the layout of the course made full use of the land’s stunning natural features. Set in over 240 acres or in metric terms one square kilometre the course is predominantly moorland in character but with heathland and parkland features, players who visit will find themselves surrounded by scenic, rural views of the Pennines. Host to the Lancashire Amateur Championship in 2011, the Northern Counties Championship in 2013 and the England Golf Captains in 2014, this is a course that is very well respected both in the local and wider golfing community. Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke both gained their European Tour cards following qualification at Hopwood. e Manchester Golf Club is a club where tradition is treasured but at the same time its forward looking and optimistic membership provides just about everything required to satisfy the modern day golfer. Visitors to the Club will no doubt take advantage of the fantastic practise and tuition facilities which include two short game areas, a driving range, a Golf Performance Centre and a Putting Lab or they might also like to make use of the golf club’s 3D flyover App which is installed on some of our buggy carts to help you navigate the course more easily. e same 3D flyover of the course can be found on our new website. www.mangc.co.uk. e Manchester Golf Club is a private members' club of quality and distinction and yet it is a club where members and visitors are welcome and alike can enjoy their golf and leisure time in a genuinely relaxed atmosphere. Our team of professional green keepers take immense pride in ensuring the course is always presented in immaculate condition. Ashton under Lyne Golf Club Formed in 1913 is a wooded course nestling in the foothills of the Pennines on the edge of the Greater Manchester conurbation. Over the years great improvements have been made to the course; we have increased its length, added bunkers, improved tees and greens and planted many, many new trees. e club adopts a progressive approach to course management and development which has arguably elevated the course to being the best in the Tameside area. We are continually recognised by Lancashire having hosted multiple events over 2011,2012,2013,2014 & 2015 due to the quality of our course. We have a long standing reputation of producing some of the finest golfers in the area many of whom have represented Lancashire & England respectfully which also includes the current head Professional at Gleneagles, Andrew Jowett. Possibly the greatest success story is our very own European tour professional Matthew Nixon who remains affiliated to the club. Matthew Joined Ashton at the age of 4 progressing rapidly through the golfing ranks culminating in being crowned club champion at the age of 17 and lifting the British Boys amateur championship at Royal Aberdeen in 2006. Incredibly Matthew still finds time to compete in our annual Boxing Day club competition and is patron of our newly formed junior academy. Our clubhouse offers all the usual facilities you would expect from an established club including exceptional views of our finishing signature hole aptly name ‘death or glory’ due to the large ravine that sits between the tee and green! We cater for all manner of occasions ranging from private dining through to weddings. Our function room is free to hire further details can be found on our club website.

Pensions Escape from Alcatraz

O

Governor would kindly let you take 25% of your pension home with you! Sadly, the heartbreaking news is that the remaining 75% was condemned to remain incarcerated for life, yes, you could visit every month (take income) but your visits would be short and inflexible.

Prior to this date, your pension had very few rights. You couldn't visit your pension (by visit, I mean gain access to your money. However, visit fits with the analogy so we will stick with it if that's ok with you) until you were 55 years of age. en when you visited at age 55 or later, the prison

You would often feel frustrated as you chatted with your pension on visiting days. You would talk about all the things you could do together if it were set free, but had to make do with being allowed to take a modest amount of your pension home with you each visit. You once calculated that you would have to live to well over 100 years of age to release all of your pension from prison.

n April 6th 2015, your pension heard the clunk click of the prison cell door opening and was told, you are free to go. As your pension stepped out into the bright sunlight, free of handcuffs and shackles for the first time in its life, it rejoiced at hearing the birds singing and its nostrils become alive with the sweet smell of freedom.

One month Sidney, the guy in the next cubicle to you stopped visiting, your pension told you he had passed away. His pension was heartbroken, as it would never be allowed to leave, not even in small amounts. Sidney's family would love to visit and continue to take Sid’s pension out, but sadly this wasn't allowed.

120

Issue 14

F R E E D O M FLEXIBILITY CHOICES OPTIONS So, here we are with the handcuffs and shackles off and never to be seen again. You and your pensions now have the world at your feet. You can still take 25% of your pension out from age 55 totally tax free. You could also take the other 75% out in full. It's not all rosy though. As with the small amount you could take away with you on your previous visits before the rule change, any income/capital you take out of your pension in the new world will be treated like earned income and potentially subject to income tax. It's not just a case of waltzing off into the sunset with your pension hand in hand. You don't have to be a mathematician to work out that if you spend all your money you will have none left, so a cash flow plan needs to be in place. Equally, when I reach retirement, I know I would appreciate the option to spend more money in the early years of retirement when I am, first and foremost, still alive and hopefully able bodied enough to enjoy it. Compared to my later years, when my desire/ability to go globe-trotting might reduce somewhat. Along with the massively increased freedom, flexibility comes with many choices and options. With the choices and options come the burden of decision making. Whereas previously you were at a T junction and you could go left or right, you are now at a roundabout with 8(ish) exits. You need a satnav (a good independent financial adviser), more than ever. If you have a pension or a number of pensions, the decisions you will be in the position to make are extremely important as they will have a direct impact on the rest of your life. If you don't have an independent financial adviser already, get one, ideally a Chartered Independent Financial Adviser. Even if you are years off retirement, it's important to have a long term relationship with your adviser in order to plan ahead, understand your options and make sure you are best placed to enjoy the best life you possibly can in retirement.

WHAT THE BFG AND YOUR ISA HAVE IN COMMON Decoding the complex world of investing to unlock your money’s potential

I

nvesting can be discomfiting to many people because of the amount of jargon used. But using this as an excuse to not find ways to make your money work harder could be costing you thousands.

New research suggests that more than half (51%) of British adults blame their inability to invest more on a lack of understanding of the technical wording used, or not having the required knowledge or confidence. In fact, despite eresa May’s promise to focus on more even distribution of the spoils of capitalism, a shocking lack of know-how amongst the average British adult could prove to be the biggest barrier to fulfilling this.

122

Issue 14

• A fifth of British people do not know what an ISA is • Four fifths (78%) adults do not know what a retail bond is • More than half (59%) do not know what the FTSE is • Nearly two-thirds (63%) could not define what a dividend is • Nearly three quarters (73%) could not explain what standard terminology ‘AER’ stands for or means

CROWDSTACKER

e lack of knowledge could be worse amongst the younger generation with one in ten (10%) 18 to 24yr olds thinking that the Roald Dahl’s BFG word ‘Lixivate’ and Joey Essex’s made up ‘confrontate’ were real financial terms. e impact on the average worker’s savings and the cost to potential investment in the British economy is huge. A quarter (24%) of British adults said they would like to invest an average £2500 of their annual spare cash to grow a bigger savings pot, equating to a potential extra £31bn annual cash injection to the economy.

explains Karteek Patel, CEO of Crowdstacker, one of the fastest growing peer to peer lending platforms in the UK and commissioner of the research. “e complexity of how the financial world works is difficult to explain and understand, and it’s made worse with the use of jargon and abbreviations. But those of us operating in the Fintech arena have a wonderful opportunity to change this and spearhead new ways to involve more everyday investors by making investment more interesting and much easier to understand.”

“Our research reveals the world of investment remains largely closed off to all but a privileged few meaning only a certain section of the population is able to explore and utilise the range of investment options that exist beyond simple ISAs and pension schemes,”

CROWD STACKE R

Some of the most interesting findings include: • e FTSE is often used in the media as a barometer for the British economy, yet understanding of it is very low. Nearly three quarters of 18-24yr olds and more than two-thirds of 25-34yr olds could not correctly explain what it is • Despite being one of the global financial capitals, over two thirds of Londoners could not correctly define what the FTSE is, and only two-fifths could explain what a dividend is • Edinburgh was the only city in the whole of the UK where everyone questioned correctly defined what an ISA is • Two-fifths of people were unable to say what a retail bond is, whilst over a quarter (27%) think it provides a guaranteed return • A third of people (32%) prefer to stick to what they know by putting their cash in a savings vehicle such as a bank 124

Evoque goes from strength to strength Range Rover Evoque HSE Dynamic Lux

Five years on from launch, the Range Rover Evoque has been tweaked and fitted with JLR’s impressive Ingenium turbodiesel. Is it still the by Keith Adams must-have crossover in the premium sector?

omson and ex-Lincoln Designer Jeremy Waterman. e visual changes are limited to optional all-LED headlights, the corporate LED running light shape, and new LED tail lights. ere are also larger air intakes, as previewed in the 2014 Autobiography model.

ankfully, Land Rover hasn’t messed too much with the Evoque’s ground-breaking styling, as penned by Julian

Inside, it’s been mildly tweaked, too. e infotainment screen has been upgraded (it’s faster and easier to use than before), and the instruments have been modernised, with a new central supplementary screen. It’s very much in keeping with the more upmarket Range Rovers, and much more

t’s the car that brought super-profitability to Jaguar Land Rover, opened new markets for the company and delivered a desirable, aspirational product to a much wider audience. No wonder the impressive Land Rover Evoque was voted Car of e Year in 2011. Five years on, it’s still in huge demand but, despite that, Land Rover isn’t resting on its laurels, giving the Evoque a mid-life refresh – and introducing the Ingenium engine into the mix.

Issue 14

pleasing on the eyes. We also rather like the optional head-up display (£1000), which given its contribution to driver safety, should be offered as part of the standard equipment package. e big news is the addition of that Ingenium engine. It wasn’t as if the old Ford TDCi power unit was lacking in power but, compared with the best of the best opposition, it wasn’t that economical or that clean at the tailpipe. at’s all changed now – although there was something of a wait for the new four-cylinder oil-burner to make it to the Evoque.

128

Issue 14

Put that down to the modifications needed to make it fit in the transverse engine bay and the need to meet Land Rover’s wading depth requirements. is model pumps out 177bhp , and is fitted with JLR’s nine-speed auto for a 0-60mph time of 8.5 seconds and a maximum speed of 121mph – more than enough to keep up with the flow. Although the entry-level Evoque develops 109g/km CO2 and makes 68mpg (combined), this one is a little juicier at 134g/km and 55mpg (combined).

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE In reality, and during our week behind the wheel, we averaged 40mpg – which is more than acceptable for your company expenses, given the combination of city and motorway driving we subjected it to. Unlike the Jaguar XE, refinement levels seem very impressive indeed. We’ll put that down to the excellent sound deadening in this 1690kg car. At idle, it’s soft and muted, and throttle response is keen. e nine-speed torqueconverter transmission shifts beautifully between ratios, and never is it wrong-footed, even when trundling along the motorway at the legal limit in the long-striding top gear, at less than 2000rpm. Moreover, in give-and-take driving, it feels genuinely alert and rapid, without the need to resort to driving hard. On B-roads, the high seating position and effortless speed give the driver confidence, while the light and quick steering result in sharp turn-in. is is an impressive effort by the JLR Chassis Engineers, who have clearly given the car a little more agility, thanks to its lighter drivetrain. Of course, Evoques aren’t generally bought to pile down B-roads, but

it’s good to know it has genuine dynamic prowess should you feel in the mood to have fun. No, the Evoque’s USP is it’s ability to make the driver feel good – and that process begins even before you jump in. e edgy styling, restful interior and upscale overall ambiance is something that none of its rivals come close to matching – not the BMW X3 or Audi Q3, perhaps the Jaguar F-Pace, but – ahem – we won’t mention that here.... is, then, is great news for Land Rover. Five years on, it’s still endowed with massive doses of pure want. In facelifted form, the Evoque is still a front-line contender in the executive car market. e updates merely improve a design that’s done wonders for its maker, and spawned a generation of impersonators. It’s not perfect, and at £51,650 tested, it’s a very pricey option – the brilliant Lexus RX450h is usefully cheaper. However, if feeling good about yourself means more than mere money, or your fleet manager is a generous soul, this five-year old ground-breaker still makes a great deal of sense.

VW CC

You expect VW’s to be well made, reliable and comfortable. What you don’t expect perhaps is a dash of style and sophistication which help make a good car even better as Stephen Rome discovered after driving the latest VW CC which has a few surprises up its sleeve...

VW CC

What’s in a name?

W

hen the new Passat CC took a bow back in 2008, it seemed a logical extension of one of the most successful of VW’s large family cars. Nothing if not thorough, VW introduced the CC in part to replace its super luxury Phaeton which when it was launched in 2002 had aspirations to take on prestige rivals from Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, BMW, Lexus and - ironically - Audi. To say that VW bit off more than it could chew was an understatement and the Phaeton was discreetly withdrawn from the UK a year ago; it now lives on in China where it has been reborn as the Phidion. e Passat CC? Well, that’s a different story and such has been its success with its sleek lines, streamlined body and breathtaking style that it’s led to a new generation of two plus two rivals from Mercedes Benz, BMW and yet again Audi. And top marks to VW for solving the dilemma of how to replace the flawed Phaeton which they neatly solved by simply taking the Passat name off the CC and relaunching it as the, er, CC… A week with the range topping CC R-Line Black edition was satisfying and rewarding; at £33,485 the car is not cheap but given its level of equipment and technical sophistication, very good value for money.

VW CC ere’s no mistaking its handsome profile, it’s sloping roof line, sculpted sills, sleek bonnet and streamlined bumpers along with frameless windows mean those all important first impressions are very positive; the range topping Black edition sports some unique touches to distinguish it from lesser members of the CC family including Talladega alloys, uniquely designed front and rear bumpers and black gloss exterior finish which all complement its cool designer look. Bi Xenon headlights and stylish LED taillights add to the aura of sophistication - and safety. Under the skin, a powerful 184 PS diesel power plant hooks up to a creamy six speed DSG gearbox – suffice to say that on a business trip to Telford I was as cool, calm and collected as the moment I left Ormskirk with adequate power to traverse all manner of roads through Cheshire and Shropshire with aplomb - while no sports car as such, its DSG transmission offers split seconds changes and the

suspension offers three settings to maximise driver comfort via Sport, Comfort or Normal. Sybarites will relish the car’s beautiful interior fit and finish I first drove a Passat CC some four years ago with a contrasting leather colourway in cream – the test car came with Nappa leather and Carbon optic bolsters and tasteful black roof lining. VW has been very generous with standard kit on the CC which includes climate control, a brilliant sound system and some exquisite detailing to identifying the CC out as something special - a dash mounted analogue clock is the finishing touch on a very fine car indeed. And those swoopy lines don’t mean a cramped cabin either with four wide opening doors opening up more rear space than a conventional coupe, the test car’s panoramic sunroof adding to that feeling of refined luxury too.

TOURING

Arosa Caravan and Camping Park

With my reviewing hat on I decided to check out the toilet and shower block which I found to be well appointed and very clean, the washroom and laundrette proved to be more than adequate if not a little dated. e whole site is extremely well maintained and there is a great kiddies park which appeared to be very popular as did the games room above the bar. I really cannot say enough about this site, the location, friendliness and traditional values sadly missing at so many parks are alive and in abundance at Arosa.

Having spent the last 3 years travelling around the UK I have visited hundreds of touring parks and only on a handful of occasions have I used the term Hidden Gem. Well we can add to the list with the addition of Arosa Caravan and Camping Park ideally situated on the edge of the village of Seamer and just 4 miles south east of the historic town of Scarborough. I had been looking for a base from which to explore the East Yorkshire Coast and Arosa seemed to tick all the boxes. By choosing this park I was afforded easy access not only to Scarborough but the other coastal towns of Whitby, Filey and Bridlington as well as the market towns of Pickering, Malton and Driffield to name just a few.

available that where more than adequate to accommodate my 8 metre van. e site has a pleasant bar which boasts great home cooking and having enjoyed a lovely meal on my first night I can confirm the boasts are very much justified. My only regret was not being able to stay for the Sunday Carvery which I was told was the best for miles around, I have no doubt that this is also a boast that merits every justification.

On my arrival at the site the friendliness and warmth continued, the reception staff immediately made me feel welcome at was to become my home for the next 3 days and could not do enough to help me settle in. Although the site is not strictly designed for the modern motorhome there where a number of pitches

Before leaving I had another chat with Neil, I just had to tell him who I was and my reason for being there and to say thanks for a wonderful 3 days. We talked further about the developments plans for Arosa and Neil actually invited me back to discuss the project in greater detail especially in regards to the facilities for visiting motorhomes. Arosa has left an everlasting impression on me and I have no doubt that it will do the same for you, I have no hesitation in recommending this park and I strongly suggest you make it a must for a visit in the very near future. www.arosacamping.co.uk
