Of course, Christmas can be a tough time. Let's not forget that while most of us are tucking in to our turkey, surrounded by family and presents, for others it can be a

ShOpp iNG Christmas is by far the most exciting time of year for shopping. Our favourite stores are brimming with lovely gift ideas, a sprinkling of magic transforms Chavasse park into an alpine wonderland, and the Christmas Markets evoke a wintery romanticism that never fails to get us in the mood. it's the season for giving and Liverpool's embarrassment of retail riches means that you'll have all your gift ideas wrapped up with consummate ease. Just as well, because that leaves you plenty of 'me time' to pick out that killer party outfit at the top of your wish list. happy shopping!

anchester-born Matthew Williamson's glamorous ready-to-wear collections have been dazzling the fashion world ever since the launch of his eponymous fashion label in 1997 and a highly acclaimed debut showcase at London Fashion Week later that year. Panellists include head of digital at Matthew Williamson, Rosanna Falconer; twice British Hairdresser of the Year, Andrew Collinge (who will also be presenting a stand to promote his Beacon status training scheme); and fashion photographer, Tim Bret Day. ere's also the opportunity to meet specialists from across the fashion and design business, from models, bloggers, photographers and stylists to fashion journalists, PRs and buyers. e evenings focus then moves across the city, to the Cunard Building, on the city’s historic waterfront. e iconic venue will host a fashion show curated by luxury boutique, Cricket'. HERBERT HOWE
A Cut Above Herbert of Liverpool | Bling Bling Building, 69 Hanover Street, Liverpool L1 3DY The 'King of Bling,' Herbert Howe, is to the hairdressing world what the Royal Liver Building is to architecture. A timeless icon, Liverpool through and through, and still imperious to this day. The selfmade success story turned 70 this year and shows no signs of hanging up his scissors. Simon Grant got in the chair to hear all about his rise to fame. Herbert began styling in the swinging 60s. At 17 he'd bought his first salon, for the princely sum of £100. By the time he was 25 he owned 11 different businesses (including nightclubs, restaurants, clothes shops, clothes factories, beauty salons and seven hairdressing salons) and was turning over £3.5 million a year. Now, his empire spans five sparkling floors – including a prestigious gold star training fs centre – at his multi-million pound 'Bling Bling Building' on Hanover Street. Herbert has come a long way from his humble Stoneycroft roots.

Autumn 2014
HERBERT HOWE Hi Herbert. What was it like growing up in the Howe household? e Howe household was absolutely amazing. It was a perfect house to be brought up in; lots of love and laughter. We all got on so well together. It never, ever changed from when we were children. (Herbert has a brother four years his senior and a sister two years his junior). My mother was a very glamorous lady; she looked like Lana Turner. ose days you used to go into Elaine Pacquin (formerly of Bold Street), or somewhere like that, and you'd have a professional model that would model the dresses. My mother used to do that. With my father being a teacher (at Byron Street Technical College) he was able to have seven weeks holiday. So we as children would be taken in a campervan, and we would tour right around Devon and Cornwall, having a wonderful time living on campsites.
What's your earliest memory of hairdressing?
When I was 14 years of age my mother used to make her hair blonde. Of course she used to do this with hydrogen peroxide and 880 ammonia. She asked me one day if I would do her dark roots with a toothbrush. I was absolutely amazed to see the hair lifting in front of my eyes. Going from auburn to light auburn, to orange, to yellow, and to blonde. It was done so quickly. Not so when I was in school. We did metalwork and it took me three months to make a key-ring! I think it took me six months to make a coffee table. Yet I could see somebody's hair change in front of my eyes in twenty minutes.
Autumn 2014
29
HERBERT HOWE Who was your inspiration? Was it your mother Queenie?
I think it has to be yes. I've got my father's brains and I have my mother's glamorous outlook on life. She used to say to me, 'Herbert, if you walk up Church Street and nobody turns round and looks at you, go and get yourself a nice big box with a lid and nails.' My mother didn't believe in not being noticed. She was gorgeous. When she came to my secondary school, she would come dressed like a model. She was very slim, wore great big hats and they'd go 'oh my God, who's that?' And I'd say 'that's my mum!'
What's the secret of your enduring success? What keeps you going?
I think it's the adrenalin of the business that keeps me going. Lots of people just expect things to come to them and I never did because my father told me to go out and get it. at's what I do and even to this day I don't expect to get anything for nothing.
Where did you learn your trade in those early days?
I was privileged to work for the most amazing salon, called Hills, in the city centre of Liverpool, on Bold Street. It was like Bond Street back then. Very up-market! You couldn't walk up that street unless the ladies had crocodile skin handbags and mink coats.
You've helped quite a few careers to get off the ground too haven't you?
Of course with us having the training school here, we've got around 225 apprenticeships going at the moment. We've had the training school for 29 years and we are the second biggest contract for the Skills Funding Agency in Merseyside after engineering.
My family didn't have any money, we were just an ordinary family. at was all I knew and I loved it. To be taken into this other world of opulence, with chauffeur driven Rolls Royce’s coming to the door and me walking poodles up and down Bold Street, was just a different world. But I loved it!
30
I go out, and I work my hardest to get what I can, even though I'm 70 years of age. I've just got that same enthusiasm as I had when I was twenty. Nobody ever dreams that they're going to achieve but you must set those goals. If you've got no goals you'll never achieve anything.
We've already trained 10,000 apprentices and I think there are 800 salons that they've opened throughout the world. at's something to be proud of in itself really.
Autumn 2014

Tell us about Queenie's Christmas Charity. How did that get started? at's my mother's charity and it's very special to me. My mother loved Christmas lunch and she loved children. at's where the idea came from. We went to Barnardos because my sister and I cared for my mother in her later years. I realised that there are so many young carers that the world's forgotten about and they're the unsung heroes. We were told that these youngsters didn't receive any presents at all. So we give them a wish list and then we buy them prams and dolls, bicycles – all the things that a child would want. We then make up big hampers for them, which we deliver on Christmas Eve. We also host 1,100 victims of crime, and those in sheltered accommodation, at the Devonshire House Hotel in conjunction with the police. We have great entertainers and everyone sits down to have Christmas lunch with us.
What's kept you in Liverpool all these years? Within the last ten years I've seen this city bloom. I think the people who've stayed here deserve it to have gone the way it has because they put the heart and soul into this city. We've got a great name for being hospitable. A great name for being one of the funniest cities in the country. We seem to get through adversity with a smile on our face. I'm very proud of the city I come from.

i, we’re Joel and Lorna from the radio station Heart. We present Heart Breakfast every weekday from 6am across the North West on 105.4 FM, DAB digital radio and online at heart.co.uk. We’ve been on air since May and we’ve been having the best time!
We’ve also provided the commentary for e Wheel of Liverpool in Albert Dock, where you can see the sights of the city from the Heart VIP Pod.
I’m Joel… I’ve been away from the North West for a few years but it’s great to be back living here with Vince the cat. People always tell me I look like Dale Winton... but I can't see it myself! In my spare time, I love a cheeky glass of red with my friends… I’m Lorna… and I live in Wilmslow with Dennis my dog. I love going to the gym and going on a nice run with Dennis, but I’ve got a huge sweet tooth. If you offer me Haribo, I won't be able to say no! It’s our job to wake you up every weekday morning with the best variety of music (and hopefully put a smile on your face!). We’ll also keep you up-to-date with everything that’s happening on the roads and railways, so you can hopefully avoid those annoying traffic jams and delays. Since we started in May, we’ve had loads of big name celebrities on the show with us including Robbie Williams, Louis Walsh and Ant and Dec. Robbie even helped us with a surprise proposal! We asked him to propose to Louise Gettings from Wigan on behalf of her fiancé Kev… and she said yes! We’ve been having a lot of fun around Liverpool since we launched Heart. We hosted the Race For Life at Sefton Park and had a launch party at the Titanic Hotel where we were joined by fellow Heart presenter Mark Wright! You can check out all our interviews and highlights from Heart Breakfast on heart.co.uk, where we update our blog every day to keep you up-to-speed with everything we’ve been up to. ere’s also some amazing competitions on there – including the opportunity to win holidays, plus tickets to some of the biggest gigs in the North West. Make sure you tune in to Heart on 105.4 FM and DAB digital radio to hear ‘more music variety’ (and us two!) on Heart Breakfast every weekday morning from 6!

f you are a first time visitor to Liverpool then you absolutely must visit Albert Dock. Sitting at the heart of the Liverpool Waterfront, Albert Dock has come a long way since being a working dock designed by Jessie Hartley. From being central to Liverpool’s mercantile past, to dereliction and then to its revival in 1988, today the Dock is Liverpool’s most visited, free tourist attraction and a must-see destination. If you have just one day here, then we hope to give you a whistle stop guide which will aim to make the most of your visit. However, if you have time to dwell a little longer then there really is nothing better than relaxing at the waters edge, sipping wine, and watching the magical light as it bounces across Albert Dock. Albert Dock’s history dates all the way back to 1837, when Jesse Hartley first began the development of plans for the combined dock and warehouse system. e plans drawn up by Hartley and fellow civil engineer, Phillip Hardwick for Albert Dock were at the time considered ‘radical’. e Dock basin was completed by February 1845, allowing the first ships to enter Albert Dock. Albert Dock’s fortunes waned after it was heavily bombed in WWII, closing in 1972, remaining derelict until 1983 when a plan was conceived to find a use for the site. Real estate investor, developer and asset management company Arrowcroft Holdings, had the vision to breathe life back into Albert Dock under the guidance of developer, the late Leonard Eppel CBE. Regarded as the ‘saviour of Albert Dock’, and acknowledged by the City as an Honorary Scouser, Eppel once said, “When I first visited Albert Dock [the city was] considering bulldozing these proud buildings which helped build Liverpool’s industrialised port. As I toured the site, I could hear the walls talking, bringing back conversations that had gone before us and I simply had to breathe life back into this incredible collection of Grade I listed buildings.” In 1988, Albert Dock was officially re-opened by HRH Prince Charles. Albert Dock became the iconic backdrop for ITV’s new morning television show, is Morning,

Any business will tell you that it's cold, hard numbers that truly indicate success. Well, if you were in any way, shape, or form connected to this summer's International Festival for Business (IFB), the figures point towards a job well done. Over the course of the 50-day festival a staggering 75,000 business delegates (from 88 dierent countries) attended some of the 424 IFB events spread across 139 dierent venues across Liverpool, the North and the wider UK. As one of the key organisers of the event, the Mayor of Liverpool's economic development company, Liverpool Vision, has more reason than most to celebrate. One early indicator that IFB 2014, and Liverpool itself, were a resounding hit came from the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osbourne when he announced that the event will return to the city for repeat business in 2016. From Liverpool Vision's perspective they're already toying with the idea of a curtailed programme and a smattering of fringe events. e inaugural event was rightly ambitious, the next one will be unashamedly focussed. Steinberg says, “In terms of the headlines; it will almost certainly be shorter and more concentrated. We covered a lot of sectors over the seven weeks. I think we'll want to look at those sectors that we'll particularly fasten onto for 2016 and those parts of the world where the international audience can be brought in even more strongly than they were last time. “Looking ahead is it too much to imagine that perhaps on the back of a successful 2016 – which we all hope will be the case – that the major business event on the UK calendar every two years is held in the north of England in and around Liverpool and its city region?” he adds.
It's fair to say that the largest business event in the world this year was an unprecedented success for the city of Liverpool. “I think all those involved in the city, in Liverpool Vision and all the organisations that worked with us, should have a smile on their face that we delivered something very special,” Max Steinberg says of IFB 2014.
“To me it's clear that this city is open to business, can do business and is smart about the way it does do business.”
It's also a city that doesn't rest on its laurels. Because sat here, amid the businesslike commotion of Liverpool Vision's No.1 Old Hall Street offices, they're already looking ahead. e number crunching has been done and now they await the crucial evaluation report to find out just how much business was done over the course of the festival. ose cold, hard numbers again.

at's quite the statement of intent for a city who's business confidence is arguably only just catching up with the physical and cultural regeneration of the last decade. Of course, much of that legacy stems from the seminal year of 2008 when Liverpool was crowned the European Capital of Culture. But from Steinberg's perspective, leading the city's delegation to the Shanghai 2010 World Expo was a watershed moment for him. “I think we were almost surprised by our success in Shanghai,” he admits. “We were the most successful city pavilion in the world in terms of numbers coming to see a city. We had 770,000 people come to see the Liverpool pavilion.” An impressive accolade considering most of the world's nations had city exhibits on show. Steinberg puts that down to the many iconic exports that Liverpool boasts. “It's clearly something to do with the musical heritage of the city, the Beatles, the football, the sport, the Grand National, the Waterfront, the iconic buildings. I think this city has quite a positive, edgy reputation – a bit like New York in that respect. “Also, the fact that the city has been for several years on an upward trajectory in terms of redeveloping itself,

repositioning itself, and being open to the private sector. So I think that was an interesting point on our journey.” e confidence gained from Shanghai slingshotted the city forward to host the Global Entrepreneurship Congress in 2012. Despite the illustrious roll-call of previous hosts including Kansas, Dubai and Moscow, joint organisers, the Kauffman Foundation, privately conceded that Liverpool had “set the bar higher than anybody else before,” according to Steinberg. “I think that was a very telling point,” he says. “Not only of staging such an excellent event but also looking to reconnect Liverpool back into the entrepreneurial foundations that made it the great city that it is today.” He adds, “All of that I think is producing a more confident, outward looking city that wants to work more with the private sector. I work for a mayor in this city who has made it clear that we not only have to but we want to work more closely with the private sector. We want to bring more private enterprise into this city.” LIvErPooL'S BESt dayS arE ahEad

One thing is for certain; they will not rest until the city's prosperity and global reputation reaches its zenith. “ere's still a huge regeneration job to be done in the city,” Steinberg concedes. “ere's still a job to connect much more of what's happening in the city centre with some of the outer areas and that's a challenge that we have to take very seriously over the next five to ten years. “But the mayor has a very interesting phrase, which is 'Liverpool's best days are ahead.' I work for him, so I would agree. But I actually think he's right. To be part of that journey, to see what's happening, has been an extremely rewarding experience for me personally.” Us too Max, us too.
and staging the Grand Depart of the Tour of Britain among just a few of the world-class events to shine the limelight on our city. While it will undoubtedly be one to remember, Liverpool Vision for one are firm believers that the best is yet to come. “It doesn't stop and it shouldn't stop,” Steinberg says. “We have to continually look at the opportunities that will showcase and position this city as a world investment base, and as a world cultural centre, to continue to bring as much investment here as we possibly can.” Call it the bias of a local lad who's overseen some pretty major transformations in the city but Steinberg is optimistic for the continued strength and growth of Liverpool's fortunes. He says, “All the assets that people might want, in terms of bringing up their families and developing themselves, exist in this city region in a way that maybe 30-40 years ago we forgot. We might have thought then that we were in the wrong part of the country. Actually, with the Atlantic gateway becoming not just a hugely important concept but a reality, we are very well positioned.

Customers...
Love them or lose them! Steve Dickson, Regional Director at national customer services measurement and training company, Shopper Anonymous, takes a 2014 view on the changing habits of customers, and their motivations. @ShopAnonLIV www.shopperanonymous.co.uk
With 90% of unhappy, or dissatisfied customers choosing not to return to a business or product because of the way they were dealt with, does this signal that customer services delivery in UK PLC, is in need of a re-think? Adapting to change in business, or for some companies leading and innovating that change is always a challenge and can be a daunting prospect. However it can be a tool for management encouraging staff teams to produce at higher levels, and make the step change required to generate better positioning and increased demand. It can also be very exciting striving to be the best! We know that customers have become far more discerning, and across 15 years there are 2 key factors which have impacted this sharpening of customer’s expectations. Firstly, as the world shrinks through frequent travel by sea and air, more people experience more countries and cultures than ever before. is means we benchmark tourism and visitor based customer services against what we receive here in the UK. Even if we haven’t had first hand experience ourselves, we’ve all been in the company of friends or family who wax lyrical about America, or Malaysia and how staff in the service 42

industries are trained to do such a ‘better job and make us feel great’. Whilst we can all take a view on the level of sincerity at times, we can say confidently that it’s not just the structure of their basic pay and tips that drives this customer attentiveness. It’s wired into their DNA that the customers experience is paramount. Secondly mobile technology, social media and online purchasing has made us not just savvy researchers, comparison buyers and Trip Advisors but has made millions of internet sellers and bidders using EBay, Gumtree, Auto Trader and other platforms. Following the recent launch of iPhone 6, the ‘Apple Pay’ product will be an interesting entrant. How many of us will adopt it and drive forward near field technology? Technology has shortened our attention spans, shortened our waiting times and shortened our tolerance for poor performance. So the result is that in 2014, we as consumers are more hungry and ready to question, demand and expect “something special”. We want to notice or feel the difference, in the quality and services of the purchases we make. Which means we in business have to work harder. In Liverpool we recently achieved an accolade, for the number of staff who had attended the World Host training programme. is is very good news for our city, with the commitment and drive for excellence in retail, leisure and hospitality being well understood, and that the investment support was made available. However, many senior managers and owners know that the “one off hit” starts the process, and that refresher and ongoing training, ensures continuous improvement for continuous results.

Mike Dewey General Manager of the Hard Days Night Hotel, and Blakes Restaurant commented...
"We know that online technology can influence peoples purchasing decisions, and our brand carries high expectation. We strive to over deliver as often as possible, and create a memorable experience for walk in guests and overnight visitors to the city". e trouble with customer service is that most businesses are not sure how to really measure it. Visible complaints at the bottom end of the scale are good… You can see and feel them and decide how to address them both with the complainant or internally if there is a process or quality breakdown. Receiving praise, adulation and high scores at the top end is great….as we feel warm and appreciated for the job we’ve done, and we can report good things back up the line to board level. e main problem is the bit in the middle. e bit in the middle is generally ten times larger than the complaints and the praise, and often much larger than this for companies who have little or no measurement factors and analytics. e bit in the middle is the raft of customers who feel nothing. ey don’t have a view, because the experience didn’t register or move them, and they certainly didn’t feel special or appreciated.
ey are passive and easily fall away, who can gravitate to the dark side very quickly. ey become like the fiendish ‘Dementors’ in the Harry Potter series, cooking up negativity and spreading fear and caution amongst others making the population indecisive….. influencing thinking and making the mind up for others. Any company whether business to business or direct to customer, needs to know where they stand. ey need to know how the people who make up the sales revenue, really feel about the products and service they use and receive. We all know the multiplying factors for positive referral, when enthusiastic ambassadors talk up a business or product. However, we’re not as clear on the size and scale of the multiplying harm of disaffected clients and customers talking a business down. is is a real problem, but measurement and analytics can begin to address and reduce these occurrences. Warrington based United Utilities a FTSE100 company sees customer service as key. CEO Steve Mogford recently said, “we are improving the quality and reliability of our infrastructure for the benefit of our customers and the environment.” Virgin Supremo Sir Richard Branson, would take no issue with this editorial, as the Virgin brand success has been based around quality, value and constantly surprising and enthusing their customers by defining clearly how they interact with their product users…..stretching boundaries and raising the bar. FEATURE BUSineSS Businesses small and large simply have to position customer goals clearly in the business plan, and not in an insincere mission statement, or on the company report or newsletter. As a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, one of the many references and quotes we use from papers originated by the late Management Consultant and Professor Peter F Druker is a personal favourite. Many people know that I use the following quote very frequently when training. I love its simplicity and focus.
“e purpose of a business is to create and keep a customer” Investment and visitors continue to be drawn to Liverpool by the excellent environment and infectious momentum created by partners such as Liverpool Vision, e Mayor’s office, UK Trade & Investment, Mersey Maritime, the Peel
Group, the Local Enterprise Partnership, e Business Improvement District, and many others. ey have all been playing their part at the new table post Capital of Culture 2008, when the Liverpool engine selected 5th and 6th gear. Liverpool’s heritage, its Grade two and iconic new buildings and our capacity for art culture and music can shine brighter and more consistently with our famous hospitality and humour in greater abundance. We have seen already ‘the best of the best’ recognised at Tourism Awards nights, and other awards for customer service but this is the start of a great journey. A customer journey, that puts strong induction training then continuous training at the heart of how we do business, so our staff teams can be clear, can achieve and innovate and be proud of the company and brand that they work for.
Peter Robinson Operations Director for Bierkeller group said....
"With today's discerning customers in business and for leisure, our team are very aware of the need to maintain really high standards. We believe that regular training and refresher sessions are critical, in creating brand and city ambassadors for Liverpool, and Bierkeller want to give guests a great venue atmosphere with fantastic choice of food and drinks" 44

FEATURE BUSineSS With circa 11,000 businesses in the city borough, there is a major opportunity to build even greater customer loyalty. We have some very well managed companies and hospitality outlets in the Liverpool City region, who have been able to show others what can be achieved with Customer Excellence. For every business that is already ‘right up there’ with their customer strategy culture and training, we have 50 more that have the opportunity to follow that lead, and generate more profitable and sustained business for themselves and the region. What we do know is that customer’s primary decisions are now taking place earlier, with often no enquiry and contact to the company as information and choice is readily available to them on the internet. For commodity products and services, it’s in the palm of our hands directing immediate choices as we walk across our city, or browse through our villages and residential areas. Also, consumers are thinking about their experience beforehand and preparing to judge or rate it, in a style that we are still getting used to. We’ve always known that an ‘ambassadorial customer’ is our best asset and that they can influence so many others, and make multiple repeat purchases. During the International Festival for Business this summer, a common site was the international delegate taking photos. On the corner by the lights at 30 James street, a foreign gentleman was on his way to a seminar, and stopped to take a photo of the Liver Building. I offered, and subsequently took the photo for him with his beaming smile in the foreground, as we often do with loving couples on holiday with no one to capture them together – priceless!

after....' walk off and they'd finish the entire thing for me!”
Earlier this year he did 36 Gerry 'Cross the Mersey shows around the UK and at the end of September, a few days after he celebrates his 72nd birthday, the Sixties Gold show he fronts starts a 32 date British tour.
“But I honestly do love it. e young people come along because they have heard our songs their parents played as they were growing up - and they are simple catchy numbers they can sing along to. Now they are bringing their own children with them so we have three generations of one family all singing along to the same Gerry songs – brilliant!
Many people forget that Gerry and the Pacemakers can boast that their first three singles went to number one in the charts. e Beatles can't say that and Gerry's band were unique for this until 20 years later when Liverpool's Frankie Goes to Hollywood equalled it.
But one thing is for sure – he always returns to his Merseyside home. In fact this has been home to him all his life apart from a brief spell when he was working in West End theatres. He also has a place in Spain but his heart will always be close to the Mersey. 80

GERRY MARSDEN with many others helped raise funds soon after the Hillsborough disaster. His good work was recognised when he received the OBE and the Freedom of the City. And how did he get from his Wirral home to receive the Freedom in Liverpool Town Hall? On a ferry of course.

Brian and George weren't too sure. ey thought it was too slow but within a month it was in the top spot. “In those days they played the top ten at Anfield before each game and the crowd had taken to singing along with Walk Alone. When it finally fell out of the top ten it wasn't played and the Kop started chanting 'where's our song?' ey put it on and it has been played ever since. I still get goose bumps when I hear it at a match and, yes, I sing my head off.”
So will 2015 be slippers time for Gerry? No way. From January to April there is his Gerry 'Cross the Mersey' national tour, when he talks about the old days, his mates in Liverpool bands in the sixties, answers questions and sings. en after a couple of months off there's a tour of Canada lined up and the year finishes with another Sixties Gold UK tour.
Life certainly does go on day after day for Gerry and long may it do so.
e song Gerry will always be most associated with is “You'll Never Walk Alone” which is not only a Liverpool FC anthem, it is an international football anthem – and he has the Kop to thank for that. “Our first two singles had gone to number one and Brian Epstein and George Martin were really keen that our third did the same – nobody had achieved that. In Comedy We Trust The Comedy Trust, Sam Avery and Liverpool's top comedy clubs Liverpool is world-renowned for its funny bones. Humour is one of the bedrocks that this great city is founded upon and keeps it ticking along through good times and bad. You'll find it everywhere; from the throwaway quip of a cabbie to the polished punchlines of megastar, John Bishop. Never is the city's GSOH more apparent than at the annual laughter riot of the Liverpool Comedy Festival. Hot off the heels of a wildly successful thirteenth festival, Simon Grant dusted off his joke book and caught up with organisers, The Comedy Trust, and their comedian commander in chief, Sam Avery.

hile laughter can be highly infectious, we're also told it's the best medicine. Go figure! It's known to boost our immune systems, wash away stress, rev up our energy levels, and bind us together more powerfully than Solvite. It's well documented that a regular dose of endorphin inducing guffaws can work wonders for our health and wellbeing. One charity that recognises this feel good factor more than most is e Comedy Trust. Originally set up in 2002, to run the annual Liverpool Comedy Festival, it's long since grown into something bigger and altogether more meaningful. eir noble vision is to use the comedic art form to enrich people's lives.
“I think comedy is one of those things that gives people a platform to get their point of view across that other curriculum based activities might not do,” Avery says. “We've had people who struggle with social skills, eye contact and body language, and it's really helped them. We've also had young people on the verge of exclusion who've worked with us and found that they're actually good at something. You can see them growing as a person and finding their voice. All thanks to comedy.”

When they're not planning the flagship Liverpool Comedy Festival, the rest of the Trust's time is spent delivering groundbreaking courses that use comedy as a force for positive social change. More than 10,000 young people have taken part in their innovative projects, while their Funny Business corporate team building sessions (enjoyed by the likes of O2, Barclays and United Utilities) and beginners comedy courses (which culminate in a comedy routine in front of friends and family at a real life comedy club) have also proven a rip-snorting success. “It's mainly about building confidence, self-esteem and all those associated transferrable skills that they can learn from comedy,” says Trust Director and professional stand-up, Sam Avery. “We've got countless examples of people who've been through our process and have come out the other side with a completely different skill set and been able to achieve things that they wouldn't have done before.” Among their stand out (or should that be up?) successes has been their flagship Stand Out programme. is innovative six-week course sees pupils taught the fundamentals of stand-up comedy under the watchful tuition of professional comedians (including Sam) and Education practitioners. e weekly two-hour sessions have helped build the confidence and communication skills of countless 11-18 year olds from, not only across Merseyside and the North West, but as far afield as Wales, Yorkshire and London. Newest venture, Laughter Lines, aims to use comedy to boost literacy skills and spark an interest in reading and creative writing among young people. Meanwhile, Stand Up To Stigma confronts myths surrounding mental health and their Hilarious Hoardings project, at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, will showcase school children's comic drawings as part of the hospital's soon to be completed redevelopment.

rock and rolling in the aisles Sam Avery, Stand-up comedian and Director of the Comedy Trust and Liverpool Comedy Festival
Hi Sam. Before you launched your highly successful career in stand-up you were the bassist in heavy metal band, DBH. What was that like and what happened to the band ultimately? It was surreal but it was really sedate at the same time because we were so young (Sam was 17 when the band signed their record deal). People think it's all sex, drugs and rock 'n roll. But we took our slippers on the tour bus with us! It wasn't filled with debauchery. Perhaps it would have been had we been a little bit older but we were still kind of going 'this is a bit mad isn't it? We've just finished our A-levels!' ey put us in a studio with this big LA producer who'd worked with Ice T, Motley Crue, Poison and all these hair metal bands. We were on Top of the Pops 2, touring around Europe with Napalm Death, and had people asking us for autographs. After a few bad live reviews it all pretty much turned to doo-doo overnight. For a couple of years after it had gone wrong, I was very bitter and angry. What do you do when you're filled with bitterness, anger and resentment? You start doing stand-up comedy! Obviously being a rockstar would've been fine but my life's turned out a lot better because I've always wanted to do standup.
Sam Avery, 36, is an all-action, hands-on kind of leader. When this amiable Scouser from Childwall isn't busy directing operations at The Comedy Trust and the Liverpool Comedy Festival, he somehow manages to squeeze in a highly successful gigging stand-up career as well. Fresh from a storming run at the Edinburgh Fringe, with one-man-show Rock and Dole, we caught up with Sam for an Exclusive chat to find out more about a colourful career that so very nearly led to rock 'n roll superstardom. 84
Autumn 2014
How did you go from heavy metal to comedy then? Every New Year's day I used to set myself a New Year's resolution that I'd do stand-up comedy that year. I did this for about five or six years without ever doing it because I didn't know where to go and how to do it. I didn't know how the circuit worked and there weren't any courses like the ones that we do. I spent a few years doing the odd gig here and there but not really trying hard. en I got to a point where I thought 'I've got to really do this properly.' I learnt to drive, got a car, and started driving up and down the country for no money – just to get on stage every night.
COMEDY TRUST FEATurE Slowly but surely you start to see the odd paid gig in your diary and then you get a few weekends here and there. Once a couple of weekend clubs start booking you the others trust that they've made the right decision. Before you know it all your weekends are busy, your social life's dead, and you've achieved your goal! ere are a healthy number of comedy clubs in Liverpool at the moment. How do you rate the city's comedy scene as it stands? e comedy scene in Liverpool in 2014 is richer than it's ever been. With the opening of Liverpool Comedy Cellar there's now four regular weekend comedy clubs. I don't think many other cities can boast such an embarrassment of riches. ere's also a gong show starting at Liverpool Comedy Central. Acts normally have to get through a five-minute routine but if three audience members hold up cards they get gonged off the stage. ey can be horrible but audiences love them, so it's a great space for new acts to find their feet. I actually met my wife at a gong show. When we got married, I was doing my speech and she'd arranged for cards to be secretly put in the congregation. I got gonged off doing my own wedding speech!
Liverpool's world famous for its sense of humour and for producing some of the funniest performers of all time. Why do you think that is? In Liverpool you've got to be quick because you get heckled in your own house. Never mind getting heckled by an audience, I used to walk into my living room and my mum and dad would be giving me grief. It was in a friendly way but they'd be taking the mickey out of what I was wearing or the way I was walking. So you've got to be sharp, you've got to come back. Even if you're having your dinner you've got to have your wits about you! Finally, what advice would you give to any aspiring comedians thinking of picking up a microphone? Don't do it because there's enough competition as it is! No, I think you've got to do it because you love stand-up because otherwise there's too many knocks. e knocks don't feel like knocks when you really want to do it though because you think 'well this is just part of the process.' If you're not in it for the right reasons it's going to hurt. I've heard people say that it's easier to become a Jedi than it is to become a comedian!

ANDY WARHOL
“In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes” Transmitting Andy Warhol | Liverpool Tate | 7 November to 8 February 2015
Never mind that the bespectacled granddaddy of the 1960s Pop Art movement probably never uttered those prophetic words. It's a quote that has been, and will forever more, be densely intertwined with Warhol's myth. What's really telling about that '15minutes of fame' quote is not only that it's proven to be true but that it's been repeated over, and over, and over again – just like one of his silkscreen depictions of consumer culture. Warhol's influence on modern art has lasted considerably longer than 15 minutes and is explored in detail at Tate Liverpool's forthcoming exhibition, Transmitting Andy Warhol. 96

T
hink about it; Campbell's soup cans, Coca-Cola bottles, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley – so much of Warhol's most iconic imagery was borrowed from others. So isn't it poetic that one of his most famous statements was in fact a reproduction too? It's all part of the enigma of an artist who’s best known work invariably told us more about society than they did about him. His 'mirror to the world' approach may have looked simplistic on the surface but scratch beyond the populist veneer and there's more than a hint of disdain for consumerism and the American Dream. He once famously said, “I love Los Angeles. I love Hollywood. ey're so beautiful. Everything's plastic, but I love plastic. I want to be plastic.” Whether he believed that or not, he'd captured the growing appetite for fame, fakery and materialism that was pervading society then and that's become a modern day phenomenon since. Warhol exhibits more than 100 pieces from worldwide collections, and a few of Tate's own gems, to illustrate his role in blowing open the soup can lid on accessible art and culture as we know it. Highlights of the exhibition include major paintings loaned from international collections as well as films, drawings, photographs and informative displays. Andy Warhol (1928-1987) remains one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Always way ahead of his time, he'd begun to recognise the shifting tides of mass production culture as early as the 1960s. It marked his so-called 'abandoning' of painting, in favour of mass distribution techniques like printmaking, film, fashion and publishing at his famed New York studio 'e Factory.' Some would criticise his artistic u-turn but, as Liverpool Tate's curation suggests, Warhol's brave new world unpicked the seams of gallery elitism and thrust art into the mainstream. According to Tate Liverpool, “Warhol’s expanding of the channels of communication is especially important today in an era when digital media offers artists, as well as any member of the public, boundless possibilities of distributing information, images and ideas.” Fittingly, in large part thanks to Andy, now we can all have our 15-minutes of fame on You tube, Twitter, Instagram and blogs.

Liverpool is a city whose maritime history runs as deep as it's surrounding waters. Once Britain's second city, rivalling London for sheer wealth, it was built on the prevailing winds of trade that ferried in and out of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City. Among the grandiose buildings of the waterfront sat the offices of the world's biggest cruise liners – and they don't get much bigger than the ill-fated RMS Titanic, which was registered here – including the White Star Line and Cunard. Fitting then that e Telegraph have chosen Liverpool to host their first regional cruise show outside of London. 110

It's a family affair An Exclusive chat with Claire Sweeney and Ray Quinn JK as Robbie and Claire Sweeney
Claire Sweeney At the core of Christmas we celebrate the birth of a remarkable child. For Claire Sweeney, that message resonates stronger than ever this year with the arrival of her own son when, at the age of 43 and after two previous miscarriages, most women could be forgiven for thinking that motherhood's miracle had passed them by. Now she joins an all-star ensemble, filled with lifelong friends, that has all the hallmarks of a contented little family. Art imitating life you might say. Exclusive caught up with Claire to find out how she was preparing for motherhood and taking to the stage once more. Claire Sweeney breezes into the Empire eatre's airy circle bar (our showbiz mustering point) looking every bit the glamorous star. She throws out warm smiles and hellos to everyone in sight. Tanned and preened, she exudes a calmness that no doubt stems from the maternal bump that she cradles instinctively at all times.

Autumn 2014
You wouldn't know it by her relaxed demeanour but Sweeney is about to embark on one of the busiest chapters of her personal and professional lives. Because just a few short weeks later, her newborn son was due to arrive at Liverpool Women's Hospital. Not long after that she'd be launching headlong back into work with rehearsals for her starring role in the Liverpool Empire's panto, Aladdin. “It's certainly going to be a hectic few months but it'll be great to be back home at such an exciting time,” says Sweeney. “I'm really looking forward to spending Christmas with my Mum and Dad and all of the family”. is year has proven somewhat of an emotional rollercoaster for the Liverpudlian starlet. Her engagement to marketing consultant, Daniel Reilly, sadly came to an untimely but amicable end. However, shortly after the split Sweeney discovered the joyful news that she would finally receive her wish of becoming a mother. Being back in the protective bosom of family – both kin and panto pals alike – couldn't have come at a better time. She says, “I've got a great support system around me. Daniel, the

She adds, “It's great because if I was in another rehearsal situation, where I was walking into a room full of strangers, I probably wouldn't be able to take my baby into work. Now I can. So he's going to have all the music and dancing around him.” Returning to Liverpool, to the familiar scene of the Empire and the adoration of her home fans, is a walk down memory lane that Sweeney relishes. She says, “e first pantomime I ever saw was here at the Empire as a kid. en the first panto that I ever did as a professional was here. I played Prince
daddy, is wonderful and he's going to be with me. My mum's here, Daniel's mum's here, so I'm very lucky. It's not like I'm going off to Sunderland to do a panto. I've got all my family around me. “I've got so many friends in this show. It's like a family together. I've known Ray since he was a baby and then we did Brookside together. Pete Price I've known since I was a kid. Jane Brown, who's our director, she choreographed me in my first ever panto. It's people who've been in my life forever. Academy of eatre Arts in London. While still in her teens, she auditioned for a part in the Southport Arts Centre's Stage Company production of Chicago but was turned down due to her tender years. Mirroring the neversay-die attitude of lead character, Roxie Hart, Sweeney would later go on to play the headline role in a West End production of the show. As an actor, the Walton entertainer found fame as Lindsey Corkhill in Brookside before making appearances on Celebrity Big Brother, Strictly Come Dancing and Loose Women. As well as singing, dancing and TV presenting the multi-talented performer now also credits writing among her impressive repertoire. Because she recently finished a sell-out run of her co-written comedy, Sex and the Suburbs at the Royal Court, and will take the show on tour next year (under the new title of Sex in Suburbia) with a showing at the Empire scheduled for March. “I’ve really got the writing bug now,” she says. “I'm working on a couple of books and loving it. e hard part is getting the writing started but once I do that's it. I'm off and the time just flies by. I had ideas for two semiautobiographical stories and mentioned them to my agent who said 'go for it' so that's what I'm busy on at the moment.” at...and the baby...and the panto...how does she do it all?! 121
FAMILY FEATURE Sat on a palatial sofa, in the convivial surrounds of one of the Empire's private meeting rooms, Ray Quinn is a man at ease with himself. He's confident, chatty, and instantly likeable. e distinctive tattoo sleeve adorning his left arm indicative of an older, edgier, more experienced man about town. Looking back on a dazzling career, that's taken in dancing, acting, singing and ice skating, it's hard to believe that Quinn has only just turned 26. His willingness to push himself to the limits, and fling himself into bold new territories, has meant that he has accomplished more in his short career than many of us will in a lifetime. Earlier this year he was crowned the Dancing on Ice Champion of Champions, with skating partner Maria Filippov, after returning from his individual triumph back in 2009. Following a gruelling UK tour, as part of the show's swansong finale, Quinn has hung up his ice skates and swapped them for Aladdin's curly slippers.
Ray Quinn Ray Quinn and Claire Sweeney go way back. As a baby, Quinn was held by Sweeney when his mother worked as a dressmaker for the former Loose Women star. They were to be reunited on legendary Scouse soap, Brookside, when Quinn joined the cast as troubled teenager, Anthony 122
Murray (a part that won him widespread critical acclaim and multiple awards). Now they join forces once more in Aladdin at the Empire Theatre. They're like family; sharing a great deal of history, as well as similarly diverse career paths. Exclusive talked to Ray about taking creative control and returning to his first love: music. Autumn 2014
He says, “I've done so many different things that people think that I'm an ice skater now and this, that and the other. But it's performing and singing that I actually love. To see the Liverpool crowd again, sing my stuff, and be amongst great people – that's what I love about pantomime. I love when you see them at the stage door and they're like, 'Aladdin!' It's just fun. ey believe it and I love giving that back to people.” “You only have to ask Claire,” he adds. “Because when she came to see her first panto, she wanted to be on that stage. at's influenced her whole career. Now she's at the top of her game and done so many great things. So for me, it could be the start of another little child's dream. If you can inspire one, that'll inspire another, and you're changing the world.”
FAMILY FEATURE Of course, despite Quinn's natural inclination for winning, sometimes being a runner-up can prove advantageous. Nowhere more so than on the programme that launched him to stratospheric stardom: X Factor. One Direction, Olly Murs, JLS have all gone on to rule the charts from finishing second. So it was for Quinn, with his debut album, Doing It My Way, shooting straight to number one in the UK charts and rapidly going Platinum. An amazing achievement for a fresh faced 18-year-old performing arts student from Knowsley. But eight years on, with a string of West End credits (including Grease, Dirty Dancing and Legally Blonde) under his belt, Quinn's latest reinvention has seen him grasp the nettle and take full control of his career destiny. He's now writing and co-producing new material under the auspices of Rabbit Hole Records; an independent label that he co-owns with his manager, Steve Coxshall. It's paying dividends too, with new EP, Old Soul, Young Blood, charting straight in at number two on the pre-order jazz charts.
e talented couple – who tied the knot on a Barbados beach in 2010 – also have a toddler son, named Harry Frank. So has the triple-threat family man been passing on parenting tips to his panto co-star? “I've been saying to Claire that Daniel will learn and you've just got to get on with it,” he says. “You have no choice really because you end up walking out of the hospital with a baby and going, 'oh my God I feel like I'm stealing it! We came here with nothing and now we're walking away with a whole new life!'” ere's a suitably fairytale quality to the idea that Quinn could soon be holding Sweeney's newborn child, just as she held him some twenty six years ago.
Catch Claire Sweeney and Ray Quinn performing in Aladdin at the Empire eatre from 13 December to 4 January.
Quinn says, “I'm very excited to be getting back to my music and releasing some new material. It's a tip of the hat to the swing and what I used to do. But it's taking songs that people wouldn't necessarily know and making them jazz. We believe that it's very different and nobody else is doing it at the moment. “ey've been produced by a producer called David Fink who's huge in New York. He's worked with George Michael, Rod Stewart, Carly Simon, Phil Ramone. His list of artists that he's worked with is endless. So we've not compromised on quality as far as producing tracks goes.” After sell-out gigs at Coxshall's North London venue, e Rabbit Hole, Quinn is taking his new sound on tour as a prelude to his much anticipated new album that's due for release in March. He makes an early return to Liverpool, with an intimate gig at the legendary Cavern Club on 30 October, before settling in to a lengthy pantomime stint that precedes filming for all-British gangster movie, e Middle Man, early next year. “Being back is really lovely to be honest,” says Quinn. “I miss Liverpool big time, so I'm looking forward to spending some time here over Christmas. Unfortunately I won't have my wife with me because she's working (Quinn's wife, Emma Stephens, is appearing in the West End production of Jersey Boys at London's Picadilly eatre) but I'll see her on Christmas day and will be back and forth and stuff. Busy family! It's what we do...showbiz!” Autumn 2014

SANTA DASH
Dashing through the snow
Santa Dash | City centre | 7 December | 9.30am
On the seventh day of Christmas my true love sent to me...10,000 santa's a-dashing?! Okay, so it may not have the same sleigh bell ring to it as seven swans aswimming. But that's the heartwarming scene that will greet us on 7 December as the city centre is flooded with thousands of jolly, jogging Kris Kringles at the annual Liverpool Santa Dash. Celebrating its tenth anniversary and eleventh staging this year, the Liverpool Santa Dash is one of the biggest and best santa runs anywhere in the world. e chance to don a big red suit and a wooly beard for charity has become one of the most eagerly anticipated mass sporting events on the Merseyside calendar. In fact, it's a phenomenon that will be repeated right across the globe. Notably in Las Vegas; Liverpool's perennial friendly rivals for the World Santa Challenge. A title that's bestowed upon the biggest santa gathering on the planet. Last year, hometown Olympic bronze medal winning gymnast, Beth Tweddle started the race, alongside Everton FC legend, Joe Royle and former X Factor star Chris Maloney as Liverpool. But despite the star draws, and another bumper turnout, Vegas later went all in to take the spoils with more than 11,000 registered Santa's stomping through Sin City. Organisers, BTR, expect to smash Liverpool's own attendance records at the very least this year (and potentially dethrone their Nevadan rivals in the process) as legions of plucky runners paint the city red by taking on the five kilometre city centre course. No doubt the majority will be attracted by the electric atmosphere and sense of camaraderie that separates this event from other more serious running competitions.

Autumn 2014
at's not to say that the assorted motley crew of Saint Nicholas' won't be taking it seriously. First and foremost they'll be hoping to raise a sackful of funds for a variety of worthwhile causes. But, for some of the elite Santas out there, the scent of glory and a chance to beat their own personal best may prove irresistible. e full five kilometre Santa Dash kicks off at 9.30am, from the Pier Head on Canada Boulevard, before runners wind their way through the Commercial District, and back to the finish line in front of the Town Hall at Castle Street. A 1.5 kilometre Mini Dash, for 500 of Santa's little helpers aged 12 years old and below, takes place immediately after the main event. e standard £20 entry for adults (up to and including Saturday 8 November then £25 thereafter) includes the crucial one-size-fits-all Santa garb and a medal at the finish. If red's not your colour then for a select 500 entrants there's the opportunity to apply for a special blue Santa suit. Fees are the same but hurry; blue suits are allocated on a purely first come, first served basis. e £10 Mini Dash entry fee includes a childsize Santa suit, which comes in two sizes – one for under eights and the other for eight to 12-year-olds. For more information, and to book your place in this year's Santa Dash, visit www.btrliverpool.com.
