Sounds great, right? But what exactly is ecofriendly??? Quite frankly speaking, we were asking that our selves, too and it is not a question that you answer in one quick discussion and then you’re done with it. Actually before you can give answers to that topic you need to ask a lot of questions ... and that’s what we did. What is ION doing to be eco-friendly? What do we feel is important and how should we do it? Where does it start and where does it end? Can we afford being eco-friendly? Can a Neoprene wetsuit which is largely made of synthetic ingredients and chemical substances even be eco-friendly at all?

It involves the incorporating of used materials into a new product cycle to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage and pollution. Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third partof the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle waste hierarchy model ( the 3-Rs). ION started out using fully recycled material for for premium wetsuits last season and takes the same approach for selected bike apparel and protection.

Attitude There are many different opinions and aspects to the definition of eco friendliness. Among all these controversial positions we found that one thing seemed to stick out: For us it has to do with some sort of basic attitude – a mindset that goes beyond doing something because everybody does it or because you have to do it. It is rather something you want to do because you are deeply convinced that it is essential in a global perspective. To us this attitude must be the fundamental awareness integrated in the corporate culture of our brand. So we did some research to get comprehensive knowledge on this issue because ION takes on responsibility to treat our environment with respect by using eco friendly materials and production methods as much as possible. It is important to start somewhere and keep learning to improve on the way.

Sustainability Environmental design and technology is largely reliant on producing sustainable products. Avoiding waste in the first place is better than dealing with it after things are thrown away. So not only in that sense it is our strong believe that a premium technical product built on the highest quality level possible will always pay off on the long run, because it simply lasts longer before you dump it. This may cost a bit more in the beginning, but at the end of the day it is very much about our concern to make the greatest product possible - we simply can’t afford bad products.

Life Cycle Evaluating the eco-balance of products means you get a better idea of the environmental impacts caused by its existence. Only by looking at the whole process from the very beginning to the end in the life cycle of a product makes you fully understand all effects on our earth.

Re-thinking

Some experts have recently incorporated a fourth „R“ into the concept of waste reduction: Re-think. We really do like the idea of questioning the status quo – it is a fundamental way of finding new perspectives and solutions. And that’s why we are also re-thinking the eco issue – maybe a small start, but there are many ideas in our mind and you gotta start somewhere to make a change in the future … So let’s think about it and find new oportunities!

ION used this proven Swiss technology as a pioneer brand in the wetsuit market and is now introducing it also for bike gear. The aim: To fight a very unpleasant problem many people know from sports gear: Foul sweaty smell caused by bacteria or mildew.

Neutralizes Odors With FreshGuard

FreshGuard is an odor neutralizer that is embedded in all drirelease fabrics. It eliminates odors in garments by blocking odor-causing sebaceous body oils from attaching to the fabric – also stopping the attraction of odor-causing bacteria. Not an anti-microbial or anti-bacterial, which attack bacteria that possess positive functions, FreshGuard is friendly to the environment. Unlike other products, which use a topical anti-microbial finish, FreshGuard is a process that is built directly into drirelease fabrics and doesn’t come out in the wash.

Printing process with a metal roller also called All-Over-Printing (AOP). A repeating design pattern is engraved into a roller tool and then printed onto a jersey. The thin liquid ink sucks into the fabric surface and has a nice subtle visual effect.

Complex color printing method for Polyester fabrics also known as Dye-Sublimation or Paper-Transfer-Printing. The design artwork is initially printed on special paper and then transferred onto the fabric by a heated roller or placement tool. In comparison to other methods Sublimation allows bright and precise multicolor designs. The downside are higher printing costs.

Fabrics made of COOLMAX ® pull moisture away from your skin. It absorbs and transports the moistness to the outside of the fabric and dries very fast. The fiber structure is highly breathable and keeps the body cool as well as protects it via UV radiation with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) 40+.

CORDURA ® fabrics are extremely durable, tear and abrasion resistant. It’s easy-care and gives your garment a longer life.

Polyurethane fiber is light, elastic and comes back to its original position very fast. The combination with nylon makes it durable and hardly destroyable.

How did you get into mountain biking and how did your sport career develop over the last few years? I grew up in an orphanage and riding bicycles gave me the opportunity to explore the world outside of that place. When I was 13, I started working during my holidays to save some money for a proper bike. That was the time when I held my very first, own issue of BIKE magazine in my hands and since then I’ve always wanted to be part of the scene. Two years later, I had saved up enough money to buy my first mountain bike and quite soon I was competing in dual slalom races all over Germany. I packed my tent, my bike and bought a weekend train ticket that took me around. It was a great time – I traveled all by myself with very little money and raced with the guys I had been looking up to. Doing so, I got faster and faster … and soon started in a few world cups and got my first small sponsors to support me. But the most fun I had was jumping my bike. So I got into the whole new and cool dirt jump and slopestyle scene. I did a lot of international competitions and achieved some good results. But my main passion was traveling to exotic places to „surf“ some unridden singletracks. The journey took me to amazing places all over the world – from South Africa to Bolivia, Peru, Canada and the US. I still can’t get enough of traveling, discovering and learning during these trips. I would say my riding today is a mixture of racing singletracks with some style, tricks and airtime. So today’s enduro races suit my riding style pretty well and I try to focus more and more on that.

What is mountain biking about, in your opinion? Mountain biking is the pure freedom of what you can do on two wheels. It’s so diversified and creative that everyone can find his or her perfect ride. Everything is possible on a mountain bike. I think it’s also about traveling and exploring, whichever ride you can find on our planet and adapt to the situation and enjoy the moment your tires roll over dirt. For me, riding bicycles is the best and most efficient sport I can think of, also in terms if staying fit and healthy.

Why did you choose ION? I love being on the water as much as I love being in the mountains. I surf & SUP on my travels as often as possible. Since ION has its roots in water sports, the brand has a strong surfing lifestyle, which attracts me a lot. When I heard that ION is going to develop some mountain bike apparel, I wanted to be on board and help them with my long-time R&D experience. When I met the young, motivated team behind ION, I knew that I wanted to be part of it. It’s also cool that ION is based in Munich, so I can quickly drop by, share some ideas and get some stuff to test ride.

Is there a strong link between water sports and mountain biking in general? I think there are a lot of people who do both. Riding bikes and surfing are activities that go along with each other pretty well. I know surfers who discovered mountain biking as the perfect sport when the conditions for surfing are bad or simply when there are no waves.

What are your plans for 2013 – any special projects? I will use the off-season for training to get fit enough for the international enduro races. Besides that I will push my youth camps forward and add a few more stops to my season. I am also working on my Trailmaster Challenge event to become a series in 2013. But I will definitely also go on a few cool trips and shoot for some video projects.

You founded a small family recently, has life already changed? Well, yes, it feels like I made it to the next level in life! We are so thankful that our boy Ruben is healthy and happy to be with us. He is such a good, funny boy. For now, we are trying to find a good rhythm, organize ourselves so that we can also find some time for our friends, family and common sports activities. I am looking forward to the time when we can all travel together as a family to show him the world.

What made the mountain bike sport such an important part of your life? Bikes in general were always really important for me. At first I raced BMX for over a decade and then I rode mountain bikes almost just as long. Both sports I did on a professional level. After my accident, I stayed in the bike world since I realized that I had great friends in that industry plus fans and business relations that all still stood behind me. At first, bike magazine offered me a freelance job to write a column for them and then I was contacted to plan and organize events. Eventually, I started a company that is involved almost 100% in the cycling business. And actually today, the mountain bike sport plays an almost bigger part in my life than when I was a pro athlete!

You are still quite active on the handbike, pushing the limits, also including a crash here and then. Tell us more. Since I wasn’t able to ride mountain bikes or road bikes, I started hand cycling. It gives me a feeling of freedom and I love the rush of speed when I go down a hill as well as the feeling of being exhausted when I ride up a mountain. Of course, I sometimes still test my limits in order to feel life. Apart from the physical aspect I also like the technical part of cycling like I always have. The bike, the helmet, the clothing, everything is essential to me in order to perform and be safe at the same time. So I’m just stoked that ION asked me to ride for them. You are also the vice president of the FMBA – the Freeride Mountain Bike Association – founded three years ago. Could you explain the idea behind it? The FMBA has been established by a team of experts and athletes that got together to develop the sport of freeriding. There have been many freeride contests and athletes in the past 10 years, but it was always hard to follow the athletes or to know which contests are the top ones. Often events would pop up during the year without a proper event schedule being released. It was also tough to know who are the top athletes. Fans, media and industry depended on individual events and had to guess what to follow and what not. There was simply a lack of transparency, so the FMBA created the FMB World Tour. A structured alliance of all freeride events and athletes that provides a tour schedule and a world ranking system for the athletes, events, media and fans. We make the sport more professional, but also easier to understand. We are only at the beginning, but you can already see some great changes and it all continues to progress!

The human body is neither cylindrical nor symmetrical! To achieve a tight and comfy fit you have to forget about flat 2D patterns. We use our expertise of tailoring bodyfitting wetsuits to shape anatomic fitting pads in the natural body position of riding instead of static posing.

HD_memory foam is a solid and flat material with very good damping properties. To make it suitable for the use in a bike crash pant, our engineers came up with a tricky stamping pattern, which creates flexibility as well as breathability and meanwhile keeps an almost solid surface.

Have you ever gone for a downhill ride and kept your arms straight? Neither have we. That is why we designed the e_pact with a pre-shaped, almost 90° angle to reduce fatigue and provide a wrinkle-free fit. We know about the pro and cons of visco elastic foams. But we think freedom of movement is the most important function an elbow guard needs to offer. So we went back and integrated the simple but unmatched hard cap in combination with high quality memory foam padding for optimal protection and comfort. Holy_cow We are animal lovers and rather go naked than wear fur. Thus we are using performance synthetic leather. It is three times stronger than real leather, requiring only a third of real leather’s weight to achieve equal tear strength. It resists abrasion better than real leather and is easy to care for. It can be machine washed.
