RE imagine RE design RE connect

This exhibition is shared between both level 4 and level 5 graphic design students and creates the opportunity for both years to see other’s work outside of their usual work groups up on display. Having individual books, these students researched the theories and theorists to develop incredible responses to the brief that was set resulting in an excellent exhibition that is well worth taking a look at in the Leeds Central Library between 13th and 27th May.

LEVEL 4

LEVEL 5

This exhibition showcases the re-imagined covers of theory books designed by students of LCA.

Level 5 are also displaying their work on a project that goes along side the level 4 work. Where as all of level focused on visual culture theory books, level 5 had the freedom to choose any theory book whether it be about sports, psychology or film.

Level 4 students were all appointed a visual culture theory book, some old some new, but all renowned and recognised in design. The challenge here being that as a theory book on design, the cover will have already been specifically designed to suit the book’s content and the theorist’s thoughts and feelings on the matter, so the question the students had to ask themselves was how can the design be improved? With only minimal restrictions for the task the students were left to research, explore and design however they thought was best. The restrictions being that the cover must be suitable as a stand alone poster, the poster should only include two colours, and it must be screen printed. All of these restrictions along side their thoughts on the book and their individual approach on the brief, resulted in excellent, unique work all specific to each student.

Although the books may be different, the task is the same; redesign the book’s cover. As the books can be on any subject matter, the design outcomes are all going to be extremely unique, creating a wide range of posters that will be on display. Another interesting thing about level 5’s work is that it can be produced in any way they feel fits the work best, whereas level 4 were required to screen print their work. This just adds to how divers all the work will be and it is definitely worth taking a look at each individual piece.
