Doug Halsted Many thanks to the Expo committee for their hard work this year. Andrew reports a good turnout and the makings of a strong show. Don’t forget to turn in your accepted entry on May 27th. A few slots remain for the expo workshop to be held May 29th at Imiloa. This is a good chance to meet with the juror and have your work reviewed. If you are modest and don’t want to show your work, sign up for the peanut gallery and attend anyway! Mark your calendar for the reception at Wailoa Center June 4th at 5pm For details checkout the link at http://www.hawaiiphotoexpo.com/ See you at the Expo! Refreshment volunteers... George Jensen, Anu and Joe Ruesing. Thanks guys!

“Character, like a photograph, develops in darkness.” - Yousef Karsh

Notes from the Second Banana Steve Godszak April's Critique Night was fun, wasn't it? There were plenty of images submitted so not everyone's was critiqued. However, all submitted images were shown for all to view during the break. Thanks to Susan and Andrew for their insightful comments. This fixed time format requires instantaneous responses which isn't always easy. May is almost here and that means the seniors portrait project gets underway. Thanks to Tom Whitney for creating a flyer. Do try to make your assigned time and if you cannot, please contact another team member so that a "work around" might be initiated. April's Photoshop class was once again well attended. However, various machine issues (or software programs) slowed the session. Not unusual when there are mulitple imaging programs and various types of machines. In fact, we had expected this problem to show earlier. May's session (on the 25th) will review all the material covered to date and will focus on each student's ability to use the tools. Reminder: bring images you'd like to work on during the class. During May's meeting I will present "Let's Talk Panos" during which I will share my experiences with shooting and creating panoramas. Although this format is made easy using digital technology, there are subtle and sometimes not so subtle issues to deal with. We'll talk about those. Seeing as how I'm a do-it-yourselfer and frugal to boot I'll demonstrate my home made pano head plus show images created using it. There will be panoramic reference materials available. Lastly, thanks to Bob Douglas for running the membership satisfaction poll and presenting the results to date. I wish to thank all those who took the poll and urge those who didn't to get online and do so. It's short and shouldn't take but a few minutes to complete. The board will use the feedback to improve the club experience. Mahalo! Steve

Finding inspiration outside of photography. My ritualistic trip to Borders started the same as it always did. Look for B&W then work my way down through the various photography magazines. Quite frankly I was getting bore beyond belief. The same subjects kept being dissected over and over again. What am I missing? Well part of the answer lied just within reach, right next to the “photo” magazines were the other “art” magazines. So I started a new ritual and have been selecting 2-3 art magazines each visit. It's amazing what these other art forms have to teach about the process of visualization and creation. I come away with more inspiration and ideas than any photo “how to” magazine. So the next time you are searching for inspiration I challenge you to put down that magazine and step to the left by 2 or 3 feet and dive into an alternative view into the wide world or art. While on the subject. There is an excellent French photography magazine hidden in the international section. It's called Photo. Pick it up, the pictures speak volumes. So much more than many of the mainstream media outlets we are accustomed to. This gem reminds me of Life circa '60's through the '70's. Btw we are listening to you. You wanted a calendar section. Well it's back. The index will have to await until we have a volunteer. Aloha - Bob

Review of the April Club meeting Announcements President Doug welcomed several newcomers to the meeting and had a few announcements about exhibition opportunities.

Juror for this competition is Kapulani Landgraf, Instructor of Photography and Hawaiian Visual Art at Kapiolani Community College. The deadline is July 15. In Club Contest George Jensen went over the rules for the upcoming Open Category contest. Any subject is okay, any time, as long as you took the picture. Bring 2 images to the June 16 meeting on a disc or flash drive. No entry fees. At the July meeting, the images will be viewed and the judges will make their comments. Bragging rights and ribbons will be awarded to the lucky winners.

Photo Expo News Congratulations to everyone who was selected for Photo Expo! Andrew says that the digital entries came in slowly at first – and then suddenly, there were many! There are still a few spots available for the May 29 th portfolio critiques or the Peanut Gallery. There is great benefit is having your work evaluated by a professional artist like Brian Taylor. This is an opportunity that we don’t often have here and it is being offered to us at a fraction of the normal cost. If you would like to participate in this excellent workshop go to www.hawaiiphotoexpo.com for details and sign up today! Work can be thematic or simply 8 to 10 of your best prints. The prints do not have to be matted. The opening reception for Photo Expo is June 4, Friday, from 5 to 7pm. If you were chosen to exhibit, deliver your framed work on May 27 from 9am to 4:30pm.

Senior Portrait Project Tom Whitney has created a flyer for the project that will help get the word out. Jim Kelly reports that we will begin shooting portraits on May 3 rd, and continue through the month from 9am to 4 pm each weekday. We will make adjustments as we go along. Jim needs the photographers to contact him with their best days and times so he can complete the schedule. jkelly@hawaii.edu.

Outing Ken announced the next Outing is on May 8 to Green Lake in Kapoho. We will meet at 10 am in the Keaau Shopping Center at Hokulani's Steak House and leave at 10:15. Someone will meet us at the gate on the highway outside the lake and we can drive our vehicles in to the overlook. There are bathrooms on the property. Bring a lunch and some water, maybe mosquito repellent. If you would like to join us please RSVP to Ken: ken@hawaiiphotoretreat.com

Photoshop Class The next Photoshop class will be on May 25. This will be the 4 th class and we will do some review and have some demonstrations. The classes are offered by Steve Godzsak and Ken Goodrich and there is no charge for HPC members. The classes are held at 6pm in our regular meeting room at Kamana. If you would like to come, bring a laptop with Elements, CS3 or CS4.

The Online Poll Bob Douglas went over the results of our recent HPC online poll. We are asking for your responses so we will know what you want and how we can make this club even better. Approximately 20% of the membership has responded and we appreciate all who have let us know of their preferences. If you haven’t done it yet, please go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/H9KBWVR A few comments from the poll: Do we need a second presentation? – Twenty images is enough for one night – Just want to see more photography Would like more speakers from off-island – The newsletter is great! – Too many announcements in the beginning – Would like more workshops – Want more time to socialize at meetings – Want to go back to ID Space again – Would like an outing to learn new techniques – The board is listening……and waiting for more of you to chime in before we change anything. HPC has about 70 members, but we need more information from you in order to make decisions. Thank you very much for your input!

Program Tonight’s program was a critique of member’s images. Our two judges were Andrew Bisset and Susan Miyasaka. Andrew commented that he isn’t always sure what makes a great photograph, but he definitely knows it when he sees it. Susan describes herself as an enthusiast. They may have differing visions, but each made perceptive observations that were useful to the photographers who made the images. Some photographers chose to identify themselves while others did not. Our thanks to Susan and Andrew! Member’s Choice Jim Kelly took a trip to Japan with his son in November of 2008. They flew to Osaka and then went by train to Kyoto. A friend in Japan had told Jim that this was the best time of year to see the beautiful colors of the fall leaves. The temperature was in the 40’s and there was a bit of rain, but the soft light seemed perfect for the bright colors of the maple leaves. Jim doesn’t normally photograph tourist spots, but when he saw the Golden Temple, he couldn’t not photograph it. Indeed, a lovely sight! Jim had his Canon 5D with a 24-105mm zoom lens and a point and shoot, but no tripod. He says there were places they went where tripods were not allowed. At the end of each day, Jim deleted many images from his CF cards that didn’t quite make the grade, but now wishes he had saved them. Of the several hundred images he brought back, he has entered just 4 of them in competitions and received some awards. He says if the club ever wanted to do an outing to Japan, there is plenty of subject matter there! HPC thanks Jim for sharing these great photos!

Other News July Meeting by George Jensen For our July program at the club meeting, we are going to show the results of an in club photo competition. The comments made by the judges will be read and discussed. If everyone likes this type of format, we intend to do this on a quarterly basis so let the board know what you think. The rules for the competition are as follows. 1. Each member can enter up to two images. Bring your images on either a flash drive or a cd to the June meeting. 2. The category is Open meaning any subject is ok. The images don't have to be recently taken. Put in your best shots. Even scanned slides are ok. 3. June club meeting is the entry deadline. 4. Images must have been taken by the person entering. Pretty simple so let's have a good turnout and have some fun with this.

Newsletter Report Will those who responded that they would like to consider volunteering for either working on some portion of the website or the newsletter please identify yourselves and the area of your interest.
