Archaeological Park of Casablanca Location

Casablanca, Morocco

Project type Archaeological Park Year

6

2013

Morocco and specially the city of Casablanca have a rich cultural heritage that has not been well recognized and valorized over time. As part of my master’s thesis, the main goal of this project is to recover a degraded area on the outskirts of this city and turning it into an Archaeological Park that emphasizes the cultural and historical characteristics of this particular site, Sidi Abderrahmane. Once a place of archaeological research and now a disused quarry, the strategy to regenerate the area is to engage visitors, specialists and local communities as part of the conservation process in order to valorise and promote its identity.

The program of the park offers different learning circuits and it is supported by a Museum and an Interpretive Centre. The park also replicates certain characteristics of past environments and scenarios in order to emphasize the landscape diversity of Morocco.

30 Grosvenor Square Location

London, United Kingdom

Project type Public Realm Year

12

2015-2016

The future relocation of the existing American Embassy from Grosvenor Square, Mayfair to Nine Elms, Battersea and the consequent ownership acquisition by Qatari Diar gave the opportunity to reconvert the main building into a new hotel with retail offer and to extend the scope of works to the adjacent streets and spaces improving the public realm in this unique location. Within the conservation area of Mayfair, the proposal takes in consideration the historical significance of this Grade II listed building together with its relation with Grosvenor Square, originally designed by William Kent and being one of the most famous city squares in the UK.

13

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

DANIEL OLIVEIRA

The proposed re-established connection to the west of Grosvenor Square would follow an orthogonal alignment integrating the broader network of streets and improving the pedestrian permeability and entrance to Grosvenor Square Gardens. As a Grade II listed and one of the most important Garden Squares in Mayfair the proposal seeks to emphasize the original setting of Grosvenor Square Gardens, creating greater areas for pedestrians and improving the links with the surround perpendicular streets.

14

Masterplan for 30 Grosvenor Square with improvements on the western side of Grosvenor Square Gardens.

15

The perceived geometry of Grosvenor Square Gardens is applied to the corner spaces considering the location and orientation of the current historical and listed elements and creating green spaces around them. This helps to hold their position and provides an inner place for people to dwell.

30 Grosvenor Square always had a strong historical connection with Grosvenor Square Gardens where other external monuments were erected during the post-war period. The listed elements were relocated for specific places which follows the current configuration of the square and the location of relevant existing trees were carefully analysed and retained.

16

The original setting/location of the Portland Stone Glacis around the perimeter of the building is marked with a stepped access line and the western side of the square is open to traffic.

03

London South Bank University Location

London, United Kingdom

Project type University Campus Extension Year

2017

The intent is to create a world-class teaching and learning facility for London South Bank University, with the landscape design enhancing the proposed facilities and providing a new and welcoming public realm and open spaces for students and the wider community. The landscape and public realm will encourage collaboration and inspire learning through the new spaces and routes. A Green Spine is envisaged as the heart of the campus, providing a distinct and green focal point in which university life can take place. The new public realm will promote permeability through the site by creating a more pedestrian-oriented and welcoming environment. Thresholds into the site will be clearly legible, with clear sight lines and waymarking to encourage movement through the campus.

19

GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE Reviewing existing open spaces around the campus.

MOVEMENT Existing pedestrian routes and connections.

AIR QUALITY 20

The design of Thomas Doyle Square responds to the movement of people through the space whilst offering seating to pause and rest. The square is designed to be flexible, capable of accommodating pop-up food outlets, markets, exhibitions and outdoor cinema. The carpet of paving extends into Keyworth Street which, combined with a specimen tree, breaks up the linear nature of that space.

VISUAL BUFFER

The doormat unifies Thomas Doyle Square with the shared surface of Keyworth Street.

Totem walls along the southern edge will create a visual buffer for London Road Building.

25

PROPOSED FURNITURE University Square & Thomas Doyle Square Furniture within University Square and Thomas Doyle Square will draw reference to the previous Thomas Doyle Street alignment The furniture design is inspired by the Thames barges, an element presented on LSBU crest. The barges represent an important historic link to the University and its foundation.

TOTEMS University Square & Thomas Doyle Square A linear disposition of vertical totems will help to define the edges of Thomas Doyle Square and provide a visual veil to the existing London Road Building elevation. The totems may be artworks or lighting. Similar totems will be located in University Square, visually linking the two spaces.

PROPOSED FURNITURE Rotary Yard A focal element in Rotary Yard will provide an informal breakout space inviting students to discuss ideas which will contribute for the incubator character of Clarence Centre. This platform will also bring smart technological features for students such as wifi meeting point, phone charges, pollution level measurer, etc.

26

27

Keyworth Streetwill turn into a green and welcoming linear space that forms the focal point of the campus – the Green Spine. Tree planting, green walls, planting and moveable planters will change people’s perception of the street, creating a far greener and pleasant space to walk through, meet and linger.

Thomas More Square Location

London, United Kingdom

Project type Public Realm Year

30

2014

Thomas More Square is located near St Katharine Docks, a space with an exclusive and very distinctive character. The vision is to create a rational and cohesive public realm offer for two squares (Arrival and North Square), reducing the perceived private and corporate character of the space and inviting more people to enjoy these inner areas. There is also scope to improve the arrival gateways enhancing the inte connection between these courtyard spaces and the outside.

31

The symmetry layout responds to the strong architecture lines of the space. 32

This formal arrangement and the planting selection frames the main building.

Completed at the beginning of 2016, the space now offers a more integrated public realm area that clearly improves its current use. The material quality and richness along with the incorporation of more greenery enhance the identity and add a sculptural character to the site.

33

The redesign of the North Square responds to the main pedestrian flow and also provides a warmer palette of materials.

34

The raised planters of the north square offer seating areas and pedestrian permeability access between them.

Al Mashtal Location

Abu Dhabi, UAE

Project type Urban Design & Public Realm Year

46

2015

In a city in constant development and expansion, the masterplan for this quarter in Abu Dhabi was designed combining the existing orthogonal city grid with an important east-west link that cuts through the space and creates important focal areas along it. The fluid and naturalistic adopted layout is influenced by wadis and the role of the water on the creation of these topographical and unique forms, characteristic from dry and arid climates.

Levada Linear Park Location

Rio Tinto, Portugal

Project type Regeneration & Urban Park Year

52

2013

The creation of public space and regeneration of key areas in this small city, Rio Tinto, has been in debate between the council and the local community. For consecutive years, the river Rio Tinto and its requalification was not part of the political agenda. The most important water course of the city has been intubated in some sections of its route, conducting to unpleasant scenarios and putting in risk the health and safety of the local habitants. This proposal aims to regenerate the water course and its adjacent spaces improving water quality through some sustainable and integrative natural approaches and also creating new public green spaces.

53

DANIEL OLIVEIRA landscape architect

The regeneration of this water course and its adjacent spaces is seen by the majority of the population as one of the most important interventions in the city, which will increase the life quality of local people and visitors and attenuate environmental issues that the city faces nowadays.

As part of an associated shopping area, and in a city with a rich industrial heritage and a unique topography the project aims to complement the shopping experience by providing a strong leisure destination. A broad range of spaces are provided leading the visitors through a journey that combines modernity and history through a series of paths along a dramatic landscape.

Project type Retail Park development Year

2016

57

A strong linear bridge connects the shopping mall with the central terrace. This central terrace provides a meeting place for visitors, offering panoramic views over the park and is animated with water features and planters.

58

The existing mound is a topographic feature that will be kept. The creation of an elliptical path around it will provide accessibility for a proposed top terrace.

The amphitheatre is strategically located taking advantage of the existing topography and sun exposure. This place will accommodate major events and can be turned into an ice rink on the winter.

09

Aveiro Green Infrastructure Location

Given its urban-rural transitional character, with the presence of many expectant and agricultural areas, Aveiro has the potential to create a more integrated Green Infrastructure which will better serve and improve the life of local people.

Aveiro, Portugal

Project type Green Infrastructure Year

Aveiro is a city that suffers from a dispersed and non-cohesive urban growth, which has been contributing significantly to the current unba anced distribution of public spaces and the lack of connection between them.

This proposal aims to study this potential by applying methodologies and interventions in key spaces that can requalificate the existing urban environment.

Alto Douro Wine Region Location

Alto Douro, Portugal

Project type Cultural Landscape Year

2012

The landscape of the “Alto Douro Wine Region is a classified area, famous for its viticulture tradition and considered, since 2001, World Heritage Site by UNESCO. With a unique topography Alto Douro is the oldest regulated and demarcated wine region in the world and is an important historical landscape that clearly reflects the way it has been shaped by man-made interventions over time. However, many of these changes had some less positive impacts on the landscape and ecological character of the region. By interpreting the influence of some planning policies adopted in the past, this proposal shows new alternative models of managing and maintain this distinctive territory, protecting its special character within an integrative perspective.

65

Using GIS (Geographic Information System), a series of natural and anthropic factors were analyzed, combined and manipulated in order to give us a better understanding of the actual conditions.
