Views The existing views from nearby building blocks to the site are blocked by vegetation and fences. Noises The railway corridor and the two streets bounded the site are the main noise sources, which affect nearby buildings blocks. Limited Pedestrian Access The only pedestrian access to the train station is on the eastern of the station and accesses from Queens Street. The transportation modes of the site is shared roads that there has some conflicts between pedestrian flow and vehicle movement.

WHY THIS SITE NEED TO BE UPGRADED?

TAP3

The NSW Government is committed to facilitating and encouraging use of public transport. For example, improve trains by upgrading stations to be more accessible, and improving interchanges around stations with other modes of transport such as buses, bicycles and cars.

Transportation Transit Systems

To be continued...

T1 North Shore, Northern & Western Line, North Strathfield Train Station

Meet The Demands Of Growing Population The Transport Access Program is an initiative to provide a better experience for public transport customers by delivering accessible, modern, secure and integrated transport infrastructure.

VISIONS, DESIGN PRINCIPLES, OBJECTIVES

Design Principles

1. Neighbourhood Transport Exchange Centre

2. Walkable

Upgrade North Strathfield Station to a neighbourhood transport exchange centre as NSW Transport Access Program third stage required.

Improve the pedestrian environment fo r b o t h t ra n s p o r t e d a n d l e i s u r e d walking of North Strathfield Station’s nearby neighbourhood and construct the neighbourhood to a walkable neighbourhood to encourage the social interactions between neighbours.

3. Multi – functional Space

Reconstruct the leftover space to a linear semi-enclosed park as a streetscape with a series of multiple functional spaces for nearby neighbours.

LAND 2413 Graduation Studio Assessment 3 Gruaduating Project Yuyue Liang z5083700 16

Highlight the transportation role of North Strathfield Station in this neighbourhood, and also improve this station as a transportation exchange centre as TAP required.

Enlarge the size of bike paring on the southern of the site and build a new bike parking on the northern of the station. Increase car parking spaces along Queens Street rather than build separated park and ride spaces.

Total 69000 people/h The existing transportation mode of the site is single for car – orientated, transform the car -orientated mode neighbourhood to multi -transportation modes by increasing separated cycles on both sides of the Queens Street, and separate the cycle ways from car parking spaces by plant strips.

LAND 2413 Graduation Studio Assessment 3 Gruaduating Project Yuyue Liang z5083700 17

VISIONS, DESIGN PRINCIPLES, OBJECTIVES Objectives

2. Walkable

Movement Put signals or safety signs on the intersection points and plant strips as separation for safety concerns, provide pedestrian circulation for both transported walking and leisured walking.

Build a walkable environment from improving pedestrian environment, circulation connectivity and access of the site.

Connection Provide pedestrian routes for residents from nearby residential blocks accessing to the train stations directly and create entries on the northern and southern of the site. Rather than physical connections, use vegetation buffer or landscaped furniture on the entries as a lead for visual connections and highlight the station as the neighbourhood landmark.

Environment Provide a comfort and wide enough footpath with shade canopy for both easy walk and transported walk. LAND 2413 Graduation Studio Assessment 3 Gruaduating Project Yuyue Liang z5083700 18

VISIONS, DESIGN PRINCIPLES, OBJECTIVES

Heritage Preserve the existing heritage items and highlight their culture values, for example, the heritage train station building and platform, the local heritage trees. Planting

Plant a vegetation sound buffer along the railway corridor, two plant strips on both sides of streets to separate pedestrians and cycles from vehicles for safety concerns, and local deciduous canopy trees for shading.

Place Create a series of functional programs along with the pedestrian circulations in an opened linear park form.

Objectives

3. Multi – functional Space Transform the vacant and leftover space along the railway corridor of the North Strathfield Train station to multiple functional spaces for nearby residents, working people, college students, school kids and their parents.

Activity Provide the places for a variety of activities, such as meeting and gathering spaces for nearby residents, seating area for waiting the trains and eating or drinking from the retails, play programs for school kids and semi – enclosed outdoor study room for the college students.

Social Provide social spaces along Queens Street for nearby neighbourhood residents to social interactions. LAND 2413 Graduation Studio Assessment 3 Gruaduating Project Yuyue Liang z5083700 19

Outdoor Study Space

This outdoor study space is mainly served for the students from the McDonald College, so the study area is located near the northern entry of the site for less walking distances. The study area needs to be quiete that the vegetation sound buffer would be wider than other activities zone. Also, the sunken space make the area semi -enclosed from the leisured path. Shrubs along the edge of each small study zone are planted for a more private sense.

Outdoor Meeting Place

The outdoor waiting area is dominantly constructed for nearby residents to meet and contact casually. This place is opened to the transport path and separate from the leisured path by a terrace. All the seatings of this area are face to the focal vegetation ponds which formed a pentagon shape.

Small Sunken Plaza In Front Of The Station

The small sunken plaza is in front of the North Strathfield Station, people can access to here by downstairs from the leisure path. There is a series of small amphitheatres down from the edge of the leisure path. The site is separated into two parts by the main access to the station. The one is used for gathering and has water screen for people to watch on the lawn. The another one has a cafĂŠ kiosk to sell snacks mainly for working people.

Outdoor Gym

The outdoor gym is separated from the transport path by the retained heritage tree groups. People can access to the outdoor gym from the transport path under the tree canopy, or upstairs from the leisured path. As the size of this outdoor gym would be small, the fitness equipment would mainly be portable, like wooden racks, jumping box, tyre, cable and battling rope.

Children's Playground

The children playground is sunken to separate this zone from the leisured path for parents to easier take care of their kids. This playground is mainly served for nearby kids from Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School. This playground use topography and grass to form a set of climbers with trampolines for children engaging into natural elements.
