ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI SLAYS THE WORLD
H
MEMENTO ARTEM
appy Women’s History Month! March is dedicated to the amazing women who’ve shaped the world. One area in which women have contributed their talents is art.
Throughout history, women have pushed against cultural and societal norms to be creative and express themselves. One woman in particular has been coming back up in conversations concerning her genius and impact on art history–Artemisia Gentileschi. Daughter of the Italian painter Orazio Gentileschi, Artemisia Gentileschi was one of the major followers of Caravaggio in the Baroque period of the 17th century. She
showed a lot of talent in painting early in her life. She was her father’s apprentice and worked at his workshop in Rome. He realized his daughter’s talents exceeded his own. So, he asked his contemporary Agostino Tassi to further her education. However, things took a turn when Tassi raped young Gentileschi during these lessons and promised he’d marry her. He never fulfilled his promise. Later, her father took Tassi to trial for rape. This trial garnered public attention and subsequently ruined Artemisia’s reputation. Tassi was convicted, but later released by the judge. During and following the trial, Gentileschi painted what is one of her most famous Continued on page 2.

paintings, “Judith Slaying Holofernes.” The Biblical story was a popular subject in art. Caravaggio, who’d painted the story years earlier, depicted a heroin who was timid and weak with the main character in the art piece, Judith, expressing her fear and disgust as she’s beheading the sleeping Holofernes.

In contrast Gentileschi portrays Judith as having strength in how she grasps the head of Holofernes. Even with the handmaiden, Gentileschi portrays a woman who takes charge and helps her lady by sitting on the thrashing man as he is beheaded.

Gentileschi takes the story and has the women show zero trace of hesitation or disgust as they carry out their duty for their people.

After the trial, Gentileschi married a Florentine painter, moved to Florence and had a child. However, this didn’t stop her work. She worked in the Academy of Design where she received membership—a rare occurrence for women. She was an intelligent businesswoman who travelled and garnered powerful patrons like the Grand Duke Cosimo II of the powerful Medici family and King Charles I of England. No matter the difficulty, Gentileschi pushed against the grain and accomplished numerous progressive feats for her time period. However, she’s not alone; many brilliant women have continued to challenge the status quo in ways that have changed the course of our history forever.

CAPTAIN MARVEL: HIGHER, FURTHER, FASTER
NICFLIX
I
think we can all agree that— TV shows and animated series aside—the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has more human stories, deeper character development, stronger timeline consistency and is just better than DC overall—it’s a scientific fact … Nic-science. On International Women’s Day, they did play a little catch up to DC’s “Wonder Woman” with the release of their first female-led superhero movie, “Captain Marvel!” Captain Marvel is basically the MCU’s “Superman” and at one point in the movie she recognizes she’s been fighting with “one arm tied behind her back” which I saw as a strong parallel to the state women and other minorities have been living in—basically forever—and begs the question: what would happen if they were able to reach their full potential, free of limitations? Imagine the “heroes” we’re keeping down. A lot of people were worried or upset that “Captain Marvel” might be used as a “statement piece” to further a feminist agenda, but does it matter?! Did the movie happen to feature powerful and intelligent women? 100 percent! Is there anything wrong with that? Absolutely not. To put it in perspective, this wasn’t a “FEMALE superhero movie,” it was just a SUPERHERO movie and an incredible addition to the MCU made better by its empowering themes. Set in the ‘90’s as a prequel to the rest of the MCU, “Captain Marvel” nailed it with hilarious and nostalgic ‘90’s references, super sick action sequences and amazing character development. It served as an origin story not just for Carol Danvers but for Nick Fury as

well, intertwining their stories together and capitalizing on their strong and fun dynamic, on and off camera. The witty banter and friendship that formed between the two characters was entertaining and refreshing, especially since there was no romantic subplot at ALL—something extremely rare in any genre lately.
I wouldn’t put “Captain Marvel” up there with “Black Panther” or “Avengers: Infinity War,” but it was still a great movie that tied into the MCU timeline better than “Spiderman: Homecoming” and “Black Panther” did as stand-alones. I thought Brie Larson brought a lot to the character and while her performance was stronger in the more playful moments than the extremely dramatic ones, she still KILLED it and I’m excited to see her growth as a character in the future of the MCU (unless they kill her off in “Endgame.”) -Your Friendly Neighborhood Movie Guy P.S. The mid-credit scene is DOPE— you won’t want to miss it—and the end-credit scene is funny, but you don’t NEED to stay for it. WINTER, KALE AND BANGS HEY HANNAH
H
ey Hannah,
Gross winter weather takes a toll on my mood. What can I do to cheer myself up? —Frostbite
Hey Frostbite, Get out of your room! Go out with friends and catch up over some food and try to relax. Find some time to get a workout in. Exercise is great for upping your mood and energy. Hey Hannah, Should I go on a 16 hour road trip with someone I just met on Tinder? —At a crossroads No, definitely don’t do that. Hey Hannah, How do I stay motivated to eat healthy instead of binging crappy food? —Kale-n me What’s up Kale-n me, Take it day by day, and remember it’s okay to enjoy yourself sometimes. What helps me is to find time to exercise, clean my room and find something that relaxes me. If I have a set schedule for the week, I’m more likely to eat healthier foods than if I’m all over the place. If you get off track, don’t beat yourself up over it. Just try your best, don’t let it *beet* you! Hey Hannah, How do I get to bed on time? —Buried in books Hello Buried in books, I like to try to get my homework done before it gets too late, but that isn’t always the easiest thing to do if you have a busy schedule. I try to stay on top of everything so that if I do have a night where

I can go to bed earlier, I can take advantage of that. This gets even harder because, you know, Netflix. But listen to your body, if you’re exhausted then be nice to yourself and try to find time to sleep. Hey Hannah, What do I do if I think my teacher is giving me bad grades because I’m a girl? —Fed up Hey Fed up, Talk to them about it because there could be other reasons or a miscommunication. If you feel like you aren’t being treated fairly, then you should definitely advocate for yourself and get this resolved. Try not to assume the worst until you’re given a reason to do so. Hey Hannah, Should I get bangs? —Rockin’ Style Girl, yes. Rock those bangs! Hannah Armstrong is a junior studying health and human performance.

LET OFF THE GAS PEDAL T
his might sound crazy to some, but I love driving. Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been fascinated with anything that can move: tractors, four wheelers, skidsteers, trucks, bikes, fast cars, you name it.
I think a lot of times, the journey is not only about the destination, but also about how we get there. This applies not just to road trips, but to life as well. Yes, the goal right now might be to graduate as soon as possible and start a life of our own, but although that’s the destination, the journey along the way counts as well.
The faster it moves, the better! Surprisingly, I’ve never had a speeding ticket, but I do have lots of great memories with my car. And even though it’s a 16 hour drive to my home in North Carolina, I still like driving. Sometimes, when I’m bored or just need time to myself, I’ll go for drives down random roads. It’s adventurous and exciting to me. I never know what I’ll find or where it’ll take me.
The people we meet, the places we visit and the opportunities we are presented with all play important roles in our lives. Instead of always rushing through life, try slowing down and enjoying the ride. It can be hard to put all our worries and thoughts of the future behind us, but by doing this, we may open up more opportunities. By enjoying each moment, whether it be with friends and family, the stranger in the cafeteria or even our time in class, life will be much more meaningful and enjoyable.
I also love road trips. Growing up, my family practically lived in our camper. We would often visit one of our favorite camping spots nearby, but other times we’d go for long trips across the country. On more than one occasion, my dad drove us all the way to the Pacific coast. Yes, I suppose we could’ve just flown, but that wouldn’t have made the trips nearly as memorable. The diverse scenery, stops at gas stations for restrooms and candy, books, music, and, of course, arguing with my siblings were some of the best parts.
As far as road trips go, I definitely recommend you go on one. Blast some great music and eat your favorite snacks. You can go with friends, family or on your own. Either way, enjoy the ride as much as you do the destination. Seek new opportunities, talk to new people and enjoy the moments. And let off the gas pedal!

PREPARING TO PACK UP YOUR DORM ROOM A
s we begin the second half of the semester, thoughts of summer start to creep in. And with those thoughts come questions about how to pack up a dorm room. For those returning to the dorms in the fall, there may not be many items that need to be sorted through and gotten rid of, but for those graduating and moving away, the task of sorting through all the possessions and papers can be a bit more daunting. Taking the time now to start sorting through your clothes and other items you’ve accumulated throughout the semester can save you from excess stress when the time comes to start moving out. Making a list of items you’ll no longer need outside of a dorm setting and deciding whether or not you need to keep all of the free T-shirts you’ve gathered, can help make the transition easier and lessen the load you’ll need to bring back home or put in a storage unit.
Once you’ve gathered all the clothes and items you no longer need, if you live in the girls dorm you can put them in the green donation bins in the dorm laundry rooms for someone else to use. You could also sell useful items on uGroups. Along with these places on campus, there are several other options for donating and selling your extra belongings in the Lincoln area. Goodwill Donating your used clothes and other items you no longer need to Goodwill is an easy way to declutter your dorm room before the semester ends. They accept a wide variety of donations at one drop-off site, which makes it a convenient option to dispose of your goods. There are several sites here in Lincoln where you can drop off your donations, these can be found at Goodwill.org. Plato’s Closet Plato’s Closet is pickier than Goodwill about the items they accept, but they also offer money in exchange for the donated clothes. They ask that any clothes and accessories donated be clean and in good condition. They also prefer styles that have been relevant in the last six months. For more information on what they’re looking for, you can visit their website at Platoscloset.com. Facebook Marketplace Facebook Marketplace is a great avenue to get rid of any items you no longer need. While it may take more work compared to dropping items off at a donation center, you have a chance at getting more cash in return.

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED W
e’re back from spring break, which unfortunately means there’s no more breaks this semester. This long of a stretch can be difficult, and trying to stay focused may not be the easiest task. Here are six tips to stay motivated and finish off the semester strong: Stay organized Saying motived can be hard when you’re not organized. Using a planner or writing things down on a calendar can help keep everything in order. Staying on task ensures that everything gets done so your college life can run smoothly. Get ahead Getting ahead is my key tip to maintaining good grades and keeping the stress levels down. Whenever I have free time during my day, I get started on homework that will be due in the near future. I’ve found that doing this helps make my life less stressful for the weeks ahead. Take a break While getting ahead is important, so is taking a break. It’s useful to escape studying just for a while to do something you enjoy. This can be anything such as taking a quick trip to Target, treating yourself to some frozen yogurt or ordering pizza and having a movie night with some friends.
Keep a positive attitude Having the right mindset will go a long way. When you believe you can accomplish your goals, you’re more likely to achieve them. Staying positive will help you embrace the challenges and get back on your feet more determined than before. Surround yourself with supportive people Having people around who support you can help you relax when school gets overwhelming. I’ve learned over the course of my college career that it’s okay to ask for help and advice. We all need people to lean on, and having people who are willing to be there for you makes a difference. Remember the big picture You’re here, attending college, and that’s saying something. If you fail a test or homework seems like too much, remember why you chose to come to college in the first place. When you focus on the end goal, you’re one step closer to getting that degree and taking your life in the direction you want it to go. I hope you use these few tips to help stay motivated for the rest of semester. I wish you the best of luck remember, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to! MISTER BIG CHECKS YOU HEARD IT HERE LAST

himself. The Steelers fired back, saying Brown had failed to be a team player for a long time, and accused him of being late to meetings and not showing up to practices.
From the Broncos agreeing to trade for (the elite) Joe Flacco to journeyman quarterback Nick Foles getting $22 million a year after spending the majority of his career as a backup, this year’s Free Agency window has been absolute pandemonium.
Brown then requested a trade, and his request was granted. Moreover, he got to choose his destination—and the terms on which he was dealt. Initially, the Steelers had a deal in place to send Brown to Buffalo.
The biggest story might be the Pittsburgh Steelers trading their best player for a couple of draft picks (third and fifth rounders) that may never end up even seeing the field (though Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns is perhaps just as crazy). Last year, Antonio Brown made it clear he wanted out when he didn’t show up for the Steelers’ crucial season finale. Brown then went on to verbally attack Steelers’ ownership, coaching and most negatively, his quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, saying Roethlisberger was often critical of everyone but
When his agent informed him of this trade, Brown made it clear he wouldn’t show up in Buffalo, so they backed out, despite the Steelers’ comments about Brown not getting to have a say in where he would be traded. Ultimately, the Steelers worked out a deal with the Raiders. Brown immediately posted his approval in the form of a photoshopped picture of himself in silver and black. Brown also got to rework his contract with the Raiders and went from about $38 million to about $50 million over the next three years. More importantly, it increased his guaranteed money from $0 (yes, you read that right) to about $30 million over the same timespan. This trade represents a paradigm shift in the NFL. In the past, only quarterbacks have had this kind of leverage. I’d bet NFL owners are petrified about what their star players might request next year, now that a precedent has been set for players on how to handle unfavorable contracts. Overall though, I think this is actually a good thing. It means players will likely be able to demand more favorable contracts and teams will no longer be able to take advantage of players on deals with little money guaranteed.

WOMEN’S ORDINATION: THE VOTE HARDLY WORTHY
M
y dear brothers and sisters: I speak to you and ask you to read this article with an open mind.
In 2015, the General Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists concluded with a vote of 1381 to 977, that each division within the world church could decide to ordain women within their respective division. This idea of allowing divisions, e.g. North American division (NAD) or Southern Asia division, to reach their own decision was also offered up as a solution to allow the culture of each division to be respected. But, it was decided by the World Church in session to be completely unified in this matter–so instead of deciding by division, we’re choosing to decide as a general union. Why is this stirring up such a commotion now? Less than 1 percent of women within the NAD and other divisions, have been ordained against the General Conference’s policy. Therefore, in order to keep our church unified in our decision to not ordain women, a compliance committee has been formed to ensure, well, compliance. Whatever decision is made, if it’s of God, who are we to stop it? No matter the decision, someone is going to oppose it. The question isn’t “why is this happening?” The real question is “how are we going to handle that decision?” The decisions our human leaders are making are impacted by culture, ethics and personal beliefs; nothing can change that. But through our unity, we’re able to work together to show companionship, through difference of opinion. We’re humans who make human decisions. Each of our leaders is seeking God to guide every decision, and as humans we’re prone to make mistakes which provides room to learn, grow and mature. Ultimately, what’s He called us to do? Minister for Him in the best way we can. Yes, there may be roadblocks to go around and mountains

to climb, but who said following God’s leading was always easy? When Jesus was here on Earth, the church was divided, yet he never wavered. He never down talked his Father, or encouraged people to reduce their support. We have to encourage one another, we are ultimately a community that loves Christ. As the world advances so will our church. What’s decided today may not be the decision of tomorrow. I encourage each of you to fervently pray for guidance for our leaders to come to a decision that will be right for our church to grow in the coming years. I pray that the frustration and anger that maybe felt right now will be overtaken by the recognition that it’s not something your eternal life should rest on. We were put on this planet to love God and show His love through us.

CUISINE
JAMBA JUICE BRINGS JOY DANICA DISHES
H
ave you ever traveled someplace new and been just as excited about trying the local cuisine as you were about seeing the sights? If you’re anything like me, your answer would have, of course, been yes. To be entirely honest, sometimes I’m more excited about a destination’s dining options than I am about the destination itself. During spring break, I took my first ever trip to California. And obviously, I made sure to eat avocado toast, Chinese food and I went to see what the hype about In-N-Out is all about. I stopped at multiple coffee shops and paid a pretty penny for a number of lattes and cold brews. I even made a stop at Van Leeuwen’s ice cream truck in Venice Beach and got myself a $6 cone of vegan pistachio. I’d 10/10 recommend that one, by the way. And while this was all absolutely worthwhile, what I spent the most of my time (and money) indulging in wasn’t even a California exclusive. Enter: Jamba Juice. If you’ve never heard of or been to Jamba Juice, you’re missing out. While I have nothing against any of the smoothie places in Lincoln (I’ll always love ya, nuVibe,) Jamba Juice, in my opinion, is the champion of its kind. I’m sure to stop every time I’m within an even relatively local proximity. Without a Jamba Juice location anywhere in Nebraska, and the nearest Jamba being hours away, I made sure hitting this smoothie spot was at the top of my list for this trip. During the seven day time-span of my vacation, I may or may not have made six purchases off the Jamba Juice menu. I even went as far as diverting the maps to add an additional stop when a Jamba was nearby, but not necessarily on the way to a destination.
PC: Maegan Luckiesh
With the inclusion of menu items such as oatmeal, baked good, coffee blends, breakfast wraps and sandwiches, as well as a variety of other snacks, Jamba Juice isn’t just a smoothie shop. It’s a great place for meals, a pre or postworkout stop, a study zone and an overall cheerful environment. My personal favorites are the Pomegranate Paradise and Peach Perfection smoothies and the Nutty Almond Butter Bowl. Next time you’re in an area with a Jamba, even if it’s just an airport kiosk, try something. It’ll be just the refreshing boost you need to get you through your day.

FLOODING CAUSES A STATE OF EMERGENCY
H
istoric flooding is currently affecting South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and parts of Minnesota. The flooding is largely due to the rapid snow melt from the snow storms which hit the upper midwest throughout the end of Feb. The snow storms, which some news outlets have labeled the “bomb cyclone,” coupled with heavy rainfall has caused four deaths in Nebraska and Iowa over the past week and has caused one of the most disasterous floodings in Nebraska’s history. U.S. Senators Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse, as well as Representatives Jeff Fortenberry, Don Bacon, and Adrian Smith wrote in a letter to President Donald Trump, “We write in strong support of Governor Pete Rickett’s request for an expedited presidential disaster declaration for what the governor has called ‘the most widespread disaster we’ve had in our state’s history.’” The letter goes on to explain the devastation, “The catastrophic weather events that swept Nebraska required 65 of 93 counties to declare an emergency ... The Nebraska Department of Agriculture expects this to result in a $400 million loss to the state.”
Nebraska currently has 75 cities that have issued emergency declarations, with Lincoln under a flood warning and a level 2 mandatory water restriction. Lincoln’s water supply comes from wellfields along the Platte River near Ashland. The water is pulled from an aquifer under the Platte River and is treated in Ashland. The water Lincoln is currently receiving is quality, however, there’s an issue with quantity. Most of the city wells are still inaccessible because of the flooding, which is making the repairs difficult according to Mayor Chris Beutler who has contacted the Governor’s Office and requested a disaster declaration for the City of Lincoln. Businesses are being asked to reduce their water usage by 25 percent while residential properties are being asked to reduce by 50 percent. Mayor Beutler congratulated Lincolnites on the amount of water saved. Since the mandatory water restriction went into effect more than 3 million gallons of water have been saved. The mandatory water restrictions are still in effect and will continue until further notice. Maegan Luckiesh is a senior studying graphic design.
