ANCON Medical: Most Innovative Disease Screening Technology Developers 2019 & Best Cancer Detection Technology: Nanoparticle Biomarker Tagging ANCON Medical’s long-term mission is to deliver an innovative, non-invasive technology that can detect a wide range of diseases in their earliest stages. Breath analysis is the “Holy Grail” of medical diagnosis technology, providing a simple, inexpensive way to identify minute traces of molecular biomarkers within a point of care situation, as the firm explores in this unique article. Why diagnose early? The first thing to consider is perhaps why early diagnosis is so important? For many this question may seem blindingly obvious, there are myriad stories and accounts of patients who have been told it’s ‘too late’ by doctors upon receiving their diagnosis. What is not immediately obvious is the non-discreet stages of “too late” that exist when dealing with serious, life-changing illnesses. In between catching a disease at the earliest possible stage and it eventually reaching incurable status, each step affects the treatment options available and the efficacy of these treatments. The earlier a disease such as lung cancer or bowel cancer is diagnosed, the more treatment options are available to doctors, surgeons and healthcare professionals. For advanced stage cancers, surgery is often not a viable treatment option, especially if the disease has spread to other parts of the body.
For instance, lung cancer – which is our main focus at this moment – has a net survival rate of just 15.3% according to statistics released recently by the Office of National Statistics. However, when diagnosed at Stage 1 this figure almost quadruples to 56%. This could mean that of the 47,000 or so cases each year almost 20,000 (26,000 vs 7,000) more people could potentially survive the disease if all cases were caught at Stage 1. This may seem far-fetched, but this is the potential that diagnosis technology has to change the face of the medical industry. Why isn’t this already happening? Current methods rely heavily on patients’ judgement, accuracy of symptom description and the decisions that GPs and consultants make. And once through this first stage, on expensive and relatively inaccurate technologies such as X-rays, CT scans and MRIs. Every day, many thousands of people ignore symptoms for a wide variety of reasons, from busy work and family lives, to a fear of what the diagnosis might be. Research conducted by ANCON in the UK found that over half of respondents have not visited a doctor in over five years, while over 5 million people have previously ignored serious symptoms due to a lack of time to visit a doctor. This is not a problem that is limited to the UK either, across the world putting off the visit to the doctor’s surgery undoubtedly costs thousands of lives.

Once an individual has seen a doctor and a serious disease is suspected it comes to the actual diagnosis which can often be expensive, time consuming and, worst of all, inaccurate. Coming back to lung cancer once again as a prime example; it is a notoriously difficult disease to diagnose accurately. When using a CT scan the rate of false positive diagnosis is 36%. Over a third of diagnoses turn out to not to be cancer at all. While when using X-rays early detection is not always possible due to a lack of sensitivity. While MRIs are far more sensitive, this comes with a huge price tag, both in terms of equipment and staffing costs. For these reasons, effective screening, faster diagnosis and non-invasive options are of paramount importance. How can this be achieved? An effective screening strategy could help alleviate some of the anxiety around diagnosis and fast results could free up resources for doctors and allow more people to fit a consultation into busy work schedules. ANCON Medical’s revolutionary Nanoparticle Biomarker Tagging (NBT) technology potentially offers just that. The NBT device analyses a patient’s breath to provide a fast, point of care and non-invasive diagnosis methods for the world’s most serious diseases.

Neither is it just lung diseases that have this give-away: each disease releases their individual biomarkers into the bloodstream of each person which through normal blood flow and blood oxygenation in the lungs is transferred to our breath. Opening up the scope of diagnosis to almost every kind of disease, malady or abnormality that you can think of.
The device operates at a level of accuracy far higher than anything currently on the market or in development, by detecting and analysing individual particles contained in an individual’s breath, known as biomarkers. Biomarkers are characteristic chemicals, volatile organic compounds or particles produced by the human body and all the individual organisms within it. Each bodily function, process or microorganism produces these biomarkers through everyday activities and survival. This also applies to the functions of deadly diseases, tumours and bacteria. A lung cancer tumour produces a profile of novel biomarkers that can be detected, leading to an effective way of diagnosis. This characteristic biomarker profile is exhaled through the lungs and into the outside world in each one of our breaths each and every day.
The NBT device is able to analyse a breath sample from just one minute of normal breathing and, through the use of AI, give a diagnosis within 10 minutes at the point of care. This eliminates not only a huge amount of anxiety around results but gives the most possible time to begin treatments. What is the scope of the technology? Due to the accuracy and sensitivity of the device, diseases can be detected at a stage even before symptoms develop. A crucial point not only for cancer but perhaps more so for infectious and epidemic illnesses such as Ebola. In fighting Ebola, researchers have found that early screening is the key to preventing the spread of the disease, but it’s a hard disease to diagnose based on the symptoms, which can be common to other diseases like malaria, typhoid fever and meningitis. This screening is made more difficult by the logistics of transporting a laboratory setting to rural communities where outbreaks often occur.
Once someone has the symptoms of Ebola, it’s already too late and that person can spread the disease. It’s crucial to find diseases like Ebola at its earliest point of infection, before they are showing the signs. However, once the body is infected, it will begin giving off the chemical ‘fingerprints’ of the disease, and an NBT device can find these chemical signals, even at their faintest concentrations. The incubation period for Ebola in humans is between two and 21 days, which is the time elapsed from infection until when symptoms begin to show. Ebola can’t be spread until symptoms are shown, so discovering it early is vital for prevention efforts. Other early detection methods for Ebola require a blood sample, which takes specialised medical training, a laboratory environment and can expose health care workers to some risks. A portable NBT device can give public health officials an easy-to-use screening device that can be brought into a wide range of places, including airports, train stations, rural clinics and other vital locations where it is crucial to find potentially infected individuals before they can spread the disease.

Screening for Ebola would be possible with the correct VOC Biomarkers in place, and coupled with the ability to carry out this screening in the field, which is one of the aims of our technology, Ebola could be tackled in a much more effective way. Mobility is crucial. When might this technology be available? ANCON Medical is currently developing this technology for human trials in two sites; the facility in Minnesota (USA) is part of the state’s Medical Alley medical device manufacturing community, and the same facilities in Kent (UK) operate within the Innovation Centre located within the grounds of the University of Kent at Canterbury. The collaboration between the two sites will allow human trials to take place both in the US and UK in the coming months. The company is currently in the process of raising investment for these trials before a further raise to fund clinical trials later in the year. The technology could be on the market as early as 2021 or 2022 which would truly revolutionise what is a sometimes oldfashioned facet of medicine. Treatments for cancer are advancing at an ever-increasing rate, with innovation coming in the forms of new drugs, surgical equipment and techniques of radio and chemotherapy. But treatment is just one side of the coin when it comes to making cancer survivable in the long term with diagnosis at the earliest stage being the other.
NBT technology and the natural world As with the vast majority of medical advances, ANCON Medical’s NBT technology has taken inspiration from the natural world and hopes to bring the ability to quite literally ‘sniff out’ diseases to the clinical arena, to the benefit of thousands. Sniffer dogs have been used for years to detect drugs, explosives and blood in a variety of situations. The dogs are trained to respond to the compounds given off by whatever the target substance is, whether that be in suitcases, on the street or in homes. A dog’s sense of smell is around 40 times more sensitive than that of a human’s which gives them this ability to detect smells – or volatile organic compounds as they often are – so much more effectively. It is not just dogs that can smell certain medical conditions, a common symptom of hyperglycaemia is the smell of acetone on the breath of a person, caused by ketoacidosis, an acute complication of diabetes. This telltale smell – the chemical used in nail polish – is an extreme example to show the power of illness to affect our breath. Recently, dogs have been used to indicate the presence of certain types of cancer from the compounds emitted by a person’s skin, blood and in some cases breath. And in one case a woman in the UK named Joy Milne was able to smell Parkinson’s disease on a person’s clothes and detected successfully each case of Parkinson’s.

It is from this basis that the NBT technology has developed to its current state. The technology is in its current state over 1000 times more sensitive than the most effective sniffer dogs. Creating an even more accurate way to diagnose through ‘smell’ at a far lower cost than that of training and handling dogs. Ultimately, ANCON Medical presents unique solutions for the healthcare industry, providing a pathway to early detection capabilities that can be critical for treating deadly illnesses like lung cancer, tuberculosis and others. In future the firm’s creative technology could be used to detect, diagnose and keep track of over 400 serious diseases and illnesses. Used with a filter-free face mask, a ten-billion times reduction in viable influenza viral particles is achieved at normal breathing rates. Unlike other practices we saw that incentivised staff to sell, the management team here incentivised exceptional customer service. Staff wellness is at the

Looking ahead, Shawlands Dental Care has exciting plans for expansion within the dental clinic which will be music to the ears of residents who wish to register and referring dentists. They also hope to make another charity mission with UNICEF either later this year so it can pay its success forward.

CBD Becomes A Hot Topic In UK Alternative Medicine Market Whilst CBD products have been popular in America for many years, they have been slower to catch on in the UK. However, a new wave of companies is now moving into the provision of CBD products which could reshape the country’s alternative medicine industry, as Staff Writer Hannah Stevenson highlights. CBD, a cannabinoid derived from cannabis, has long been a healing product around the world, with healers from China, America and Mexico, among others, all reported to use it to treat a variety of conditions. Today, there are many brands that incorporate CBD oil into everyday products such as coffee, biscuits and energy bars. Around the world CBD oil is becoming increasingly prevalent, and with many US states legalising cannabis itself, the oil is now used more prevalently across the country. In the UK, cannabis is still illegal, however CBD oil is allowed as long as it does not contain THC, the actual substance in cannabis that makes the substance illegal. The country’s drug laws are complicated and whilst police can issue a warning or an on-the-spot fine of £90 if a person is found with cannabis, any oils such as CBD which do not contain THC are legal. As the Drug Licensing Factsheet-Cannabis, CBD and other cannabinoids states:
“CBD as an isolated substance, in its pure form, would not be controlled under the MDA 1971 / MDR 2001.”
The report also elaborates on the concentration needed to be rendered legal:
“There needs to be a defined commercial end use and the Home Office only issues licences for cultivation of plants from approved seed types with a THC content not exceeding 0.2%. The ‘0.2%’ reference is used solely to identify varieties which may potentially be cultivated, within the scope of this policy, and to differentiate between the fee level is applicable under the Misuse of Drugs (Fees) Regulations 2010.
