Royal Hospital School

Royal Hospital School: Most Outstanding Coeducational Boarding School 2019 - South East England The Royal Hospital School is an HMC independent co-educational boarding and day school for 750 pupils aged 11-18 years, providing an outstanding, full and broad education enriched by a unique naval heritage. As part of our showcase of this year’s Private Education & Development Awards we profile the school to find out more about the unique education experience it provides. Founded in 1712 in Greenwich, London, the Royal Hospital School later moved to its current, spectacular site in 1933. Now set in 200 acres of Suffolk countryside overlooking the River Stour, the school has since continued to develop its spectacular purpose-built site and grow in size and reputation to become one of East Anglia’s leading independent schools. Initially a school open only to naval families, over the years the Royal Hospital School changed its strategic direction to widen access to boarders from a wide range of backgrounds. As well as the traditional buyers of independent education, today this includes recruitment from overseas, among services and expatriate communities and, through a means-tested bursary scheme, looked-after and disadvantaged pupils who could benefit from the strong pastoral system in place. Today the school is at the very cutting-edge of the education sector, offering a range of innovative options which help it combine the historical importance of its setting with support that will drive students to be fit for the modern world. Mobile learning is

now a key element of the teaching and learning environment at the Royal Hospital School and has been for over seven years. Over that time the school has become an Apple Regional Training Centre, sharing good practice, facilitating training opportunities for teachers and helping to develop digital learning throughout the region. As part of this technological evolution all pupils in Years 7 to 11 are now provided with a leased iPad, which is designed to be an educational tool. They have access to an agreed suite of educational apps for use in the classroom and are supported by a secure network, wellresourced Information Systems department and on a peer to peer level though the school’s Digital Leaders. Whilst technology plays a vital part in the school’s work, it also recognises that access to the digital world can come with some risks. As such, the Royal Hospital School firmly believes that it is the school’s responsibility to ensure that its pupils, parents and staff are provided with support and advice on good practice and on-line safety technologies. Recently, as part of the school’s ongoing commitment to digital

safety, assessors from the South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL) reviewed its online safety provision by interviewing staff, parents and pupils and conducting a review of the curriculum, systems, policies and support in the context of digital learning. As a result, the school received the 360-degree safe Online Safety Mark and named a national ‘Beacon of Good Practice’. The prime benefit of applying for the Online Safety Mark is that it does not focus on the individual aspects of online safety such as technological solutions, but instead it integrates online safety into school policy and the curriculum, challenging teachers and leaders in the school to think about their provision and its continual evolution. Preparing its pupils so they can use technology safely, productively and responsibly is a strength of the Royal Hospital School and to achieve this National Accreditation is a reassuring endorsement of all the efforts and processes that the school has implemented. Achieving this in the context of a boarding school where pupils are using technology for both work and recreation is particularly impressive given the additional challenges this poses.

Royal Hospital School

Thanks to its unique approach to education, forwarding-thinking management team, enriching heritage and quality teaching, pupil numbers at the Royal Hospital School have grown by 25% over the past 10 years. Reputably, the region’s leading co-educational boarding school, it provides an outstanding education for its young people no matter what their choices, abilities and interests, inspiring them to have the courage and commitment to be ambitious for their futures.

Drawing on her vast industry experience, Claire Wyatt is a voiceover artist working from her own broadcast quality studio. She explores her service offering in more detail and highlights how her adaptability is central to her success.

“I provide voiceover services for commercials, drama, TV continuity and corporate voiceover, but e-learning is a huge part of my offering. My voice is highly versatile and adaptable, and I am able to change it to meet my clients’ briefs. From empowering and educating staff to providing technical tutorials in the medical and construction sectors or teaching children to read and write through phonics, my broad experience ensures I deliver every time.”

Specifically, for the education sector, Claire offers a diverse range of skills, experience in the market and a wealth of corporate knowledge and understanding, which she discusses in more detail.

“Having a varied work history has given me a unique set of skills and experiences, which all make me the perfect voiceover for the education sector. Fundamentally, I know that I am more than a voice speaking the words you write; I am a key part of the change and learning process.” Operating within the ever-evolving voiceover market, Claire has to adapt to continue to meet her

clients’ needs, something she is deeply passionate about.

“Today, the world of voiceover and education is always changing. New trends, new technology, new approaches. I make sure I never rest on my laurels; I attend a lot of industry events and training opportunities to keep abreast of what’s new and make sure I’m prepared and adapting. I want to make sure I’m always able to offer people the best and future-proof my service. Whether that is the technical equipment and sound-engineering skills I use or new vocal styles I need to learn.” As Claire looks towards the future she is optimistic that she will continue to flourish and drive Claire Wyatt Voiceover to become an even more recognised and respected name in the voiceover community.

Woodbury Autism Education and Research

Autism Education Facilitators of the Year 2019 - New South Wales Based in New South Wales, Australia, Woodbury Autism Education and Research is an independent school for children in years K-6 with a primary diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. We invited Clinical Director Lauren Chapman to tell us more. Woodbury is an Autism specific education provider and the only school in Australia with qualified behaviour analysts and speech and language pathologists on site and in classrooms to support the implementation of curriculum and oversee the progression of learning. This unique skillset and experience, combined with a specific focus on providing students with tailored support is what sets the school apart from others and marks it out as the best possible option for parents of Autistic children, as Lauren highlights in her opening comments.

“At Woodbury, we utilise the research-based principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis to provide individualised educational programs to each and every one of our children. All of our children are different; different ages ranges from early intervention at 4 years of age to primary school education up to 12 years of age, different abilities, different learning styles and different needs. “Our success as a school comes from capitalising on these differences. Each child is treated as an individual and a specific educational program focusing on their current needs is designed, written and implemented by our teaching and clinical team. While each individual program is different our ethos and long-term aim remains the same; each of our children are working towards achieving the skills needed to successfully participate in the broader community. We aim to bridge the gap between intensive early intervention and school-based learning by providing systematic support in the areas of group learning and participation.” Such personalised support would be very much impossible to provide without dedicated, expert staff who have a diverse range of skills

and experience. Lauren is proud of her team and the work they undertake and as such is eager to discuss how she supports them and cultivates an internal culture of continuous learning for her team.

“Employing a broad range of staff with varying experiences has been a huge advantage to us. I truly believe in a multidisciplinary approach and that there is no one size fits all solution. Having a diverse range of expertise and a variety of experiences allows us to work together and collaborate as a team in our aim to provide a truly holistic approach to our students support and education. Our highly trained teaching and learning team provide expertise in the areas of behaviour support, communication, social interaction, independence, group participation and academic progression. This dedicated team of behaviour analysts, speech pathologists, occupational therapists and special educators are on-site and in our classrooms daily providing students the individualised supports they need for success. “To support these staff and ensure that they perform to the best of their abilities at all times, we provide intensive induction training including 6 months of theoretical training and hands on in class support. We place a large emphasis on up-skilling our staff and ensuring they have the necessary skills to confidently support within the classroom. We complete annual competency assessments looking at our staff’s ability to implement theory into practise and we provide monthly in class coaching and mentorship focusing on specific goals outlined within the competency assessment. We also provide monthly after school training sessions and professional development days four times per year giving additional training and support in recent topics from both in-house trainers and external

experts. Ensuring my staff are confident and supported is key to ensuring my students are confident and supported, and as such it is one of my core focuses as Clinical Director.” As part of the school’s ongoing commitment to supporting pupils it recently integrated a new service into its offering which Lauren is keen to showcase.

“Recently Woodbury opened an early intervention service to supplement our school program. Ruben’s place is an intensive group based early intervention for children aged between 3.5-5 years of age in the 12 months before they start school. This part time placement works cohesively with the child’s current in-home support to provide valuable experience and support in the areas of group participation to get the students ready for

g

school. Providing this service at such a young age ensures we are giving the necessary supports early and will hopefully decrease the need for support in later life.” Looking to the future, Woodbury will continue to adapt and enhance their service offering for the benefit of its pupils, as Lauren is proud to conclude.

“As part of our ongoing focus on improving our service offering, Woodbury’s Board is continually analysing the service we provide. Specifically in relation to its quality and effectiveness of current services, with a view to expanding, amending or adapting what we do to ensure we are continually striving to reach our full potential. There are many options in the pipeline and I am excited to continue to work with the board in our future ventures.” CONTACT DETAILS: Company: Woodbury Autism Education and Research Name: Lauren Chapman Address: Building 11, Balcombe Heights Estate, 92 Seven Hills Road, Baulkham Hills, NSW, 2153, Australia Telephone Number: +61405961528 Web Address: www.woodbury.org.au

Wildchild Adventure

Best School Residential Adventure Trip Provider 2019 - Southern England Dedicated to helping children to explore the wonders of the great outdoors, Wildchild Adventure offers residential school trips and outdoor adventure days for primary and secondary schools, as well as youth groups based across the UK. Celebrating the firm’s success in this year’s Private Education & Development Awards we profile the firm and discuss the unique services it offers. Since its inception in 2007 Wildchild Adventure has been providing an extensive range of Outdoor Adventure, Bushcraft and Team-building activities which are designed to immerse children in the wonderful world of the great outdoors. Seeking to offer an innovative service, Wildchild Adventure creates unique school trips designed to provide invaluable enrichment experiences to support and enhance traditional classroom teaching. They also give children a balance of academic learning, real-life experiences and new perspectives. These outdoor adventure programmes are delivered in natural woodland areas, helping children learn about, appreciate and connect with the natural world they live in. Across the education sector, and particularly in private education, children enjoy huge academic advantages and opportunities, which also bring more pressure and responsibility than ever before, not just for students, but also for teaching staff and school leaders. Teachers have the challenging task of teaching a comprehensive and constantly expanding curriculum, while incorporating ever advancing new technology to support and advance its learning.

The team at Wildchild Adventure see it as their role to provide meaningful and authentic outdoor experiences to balance the cerebral and intensive classroom learning. The company’s trips are an opportunity for children to apply their learning in the physical world, to learn more about the natural world they live in, and to enjoy the exploration, den building, fire lighting and outdoor fun time that is so important for children of all ages to experience. Many of the Wildchild’s competitors focus entirely on the outdoor adventure aspect of their trip, offering back to back adrenalin fuelled activities that take children from harness to harness, competing for who climbed highest, and who reached furthest. While the Wildchild Adventure team acknowledge the importance of these outdoor adventure activities, they feature in their adventure programmes as part of a balanced itinerary with teamwork and bushcraft activities, evening games and hot chocolate around the campfire - giving children a more well-rounded experience of the great outdoors that appeals to everyone. Wildchild Adventure focuses on selfachievement, perseverance and teamwork, and it is these attributes that are encouraged and celebrated on every trip the firm undertakes. It’s likely this innovative approach is what’s attracted the growing number of private education providers choosing Wildchild over the larger residential providers, bringing pupils as young as 6/7 for their annual dose of the ‘real’ outdoors! As testimony to the success of this approach, over recent years Wildchild Adventure has welcomed a growing number of private education providers, who are choosing its unique brand of bushcraft adventure programmes

as a way of connecting children with nature and immersing them in the great outdoors to balance intensive school programmes. Thanks to this constantly evolving and growing market, Wildchild Adventure is adapting its business to meet the very needs of the children it supports. Opened in 1889, the Institut auf dem Rosenberg draws on its rich history of excellence in teaching to offer students a truly exceptional programme of activities beyond the core curriculum, designed to prepare them for a future world, where digitalisation and globalisation will irrevocably alter the world as we know it today. Rosenberg prides itself on providing a truly holistic education beyond the classroom preparing the students for roles of leadership in the 21st Century. Rosenberg has been in the Gademann family for four generations, and speaking with that experience, Headmaster Bernhard Gademann takes an unorthodox stance to education commenting: “Schools kill creativity instead of enabling it; they also tend to fear individuality whereas we focus on educating forming personalities. In a world in which artificial intelligence has an increasingly prominent role, the last human bastion are our ingenious minds and our unique ability to collaborate.

Yet, schools do not adapt quickly enough, with teaching styles and content remaining almost unchanged for the past 120 years. We challenge this stereotype and refuse to run an educational establishment like a factory line. Our unique Talent & Enrichment Programme offers a completely new perspective, preparing the first truly enlightened generation for leadership in an exciting new world.” The ‘Talent & Enrichment Programme’ offers over 40 courses in a diverse array of fields including product design, biotechnology, hotel management, digital art, international law and artificial intelligence to name a few, along with a rich sports programme of 30 activities. Rosenberg is also continuously investing in state-of-the-art technology such as the latest generation of smart boards as well as their own school app, designed to augment a student’s learning experience and a secure platform for dialogue with teachers. The schools Creative Lab is a unique experimental facility, allowing student to explore their creativity and be introduced to the latest advances in technology, collaborating with large corporations as well as start-up companies. Bernhard Gademann summarises the current status quo in education and Rosenberg’s forward-thinking alternative approach: “The disconnect between skills taught in traditional schools and the requirements to succeed in the professional world has never been this extensive. With change taking an exponential trajectory, this gap will only grow bigger. Rosenberg bridges this gap by merging the academic world with the learning requirements of the 21st Century.” CONTACT DETAILS: Company: Institut auf dem Rosenberg Name: Manuel Bernardo Address: Höhenweg 60, 9000 St. Gallen, Switzerland Telephone Number: +41 71 277 77 77 Email: info@instrosenberg.ch

, Center For Educational Research and Development

Most Pioneering in Educational Resilience Skills Training & Development 2019 - USA The Center for Educational Research and Development (CERD) is an internationally recognized non-profit focused on organizational development by applying resilience as a skill set to enhance functioning and meet desired outcomes. We profile the organisation to find out more about the solutions it has to offer. Corporate Vision’s impartial five-member professional panel determined that the Center for Educational Research + Development (CERD) has proven to be a dynamic force in its innovative work with an array of organizations and institutions. CERD’s focus on building long-lasting resilience capacity “will underpin the success of its client organizations and their individual employees well into the future,” the panel concluded. Dr. Joel H. Brown, the founder and executive director of CERD and lead author of “Resilience Education,” says, “The traditional view of resilience focuses on overcoming problems or adversity. Yet resilience is an intrinsic capability nearly everyone possesses – not a personality trait or the province of a lucky few who can overcome adversity. CERD is among the first to reconceptualize professional development by coaching clients to focus on each person’s resilience as a workplace skill that can be intentionally brought forward to meet desired outcomes.” From Europe to Canada and across the U.S., Corporate Vision found CERD to be a “pioneer” in this field. It provides three standalone or combined services to a wide range of businesses, non-governmental organizations, government agencies and educational institutions: • Needs assessment/strategic planning. • Resilience Development Awareness Coaching. • Evaluation. In needs assessment/strategic planning, as the culture of an organization grows further toward development promotion, the CERD team considers specific dimensions and full

agency operations in total. This constructive, collaborative, strengths-based assessment provides the basis for a focused strategic plan.

On the first day of coaching, clients can begin applying newly identified resiliency skills, signifying service-delivery efficiency.

CERD also offers clients its ‘resilient development awareness coaching’ (RDAC) program. “The RDAC program includes increasingly sophisticated exercises in which we coach individuals to look inward, identify and emotionally connect with their available strengths and use them to mobilize key resilience skills to meet both personal and professional goals,” Brown says. “We base our approach on substantial neurobiological research supporting a linkage between emotions and learning. When individuals can intentionally tap their capacity for resilience and hone that as a focused skill, they deal more effectively with adversity and – just as important – have the greatest potential to thrive. They form closer connections with colleagues, communicate more effectively, are more engaged in their work and are better equipped to meet their professional and personal goals.”

Additionally, because skills are internalized and fundamental to human interaction, when there are changes in agency needs or the workplace environment, clients have the flexibility to respond effectively.

“CERD’s focus on building long-lasting resilience capacity will underpin the success of its client organizations and their individual employees well into the future,” the panel concluded.

CERD’s program/policy evaluation takes traditional efforts a step further. In addition to determining if services are working in client organizations’ best interests, CERD incorporates strengths-based dimensions known to produce long-lasting, positive outcomes. Based on these services and their extensive review, Corporate Vision concludes: “CERD (web: www.cerd.org) enjoys a stellar reputation, being held in high regard by the institutions with which they have partnered.” CONTACT DETAILS:

, The Brighton School

Leading Dyslexic Education Provider for Grades 1-12 - USA: The Brighton School The Brighton School is an innovative establishment dedicated to teaching dyslectic students and providing them with the skills they need to succeed in the modern world. We profile the school to learn more. Working closely with parents, caregivers and students, the Brighton School seeks to provide the most effective, evidencebased learning environment in Louisiana for students with dyslexia and related learning differences. Over recent years the school has flourished thanks to the efforts of a committed and dedicated team of administrators and teachers. Just under three years ago, the school had a mere ninety-four students. While financially sound, the school had drifted from its mission. A new executive director was hired in 2016, and since that time, the school has transformed into a better and brighter version of itself. Today, the Brighton School has 145 students in grades first through twelfth while projecting an August 2019 opening enrolment in the neighbourhood of 150-155 mission appropriate students. Since 2016, the school has

added three reading therapy programs, has established a group of well-trained teachers, and has added a vibrancy to its small school that continues to be dedicated to driving change in the teaching of children with learning difficulties. This past May, Brighton graduated a dozen seniors. Nine will be moving on to college in fields such as education, engineering, and psychology, two have established their own businesses and the last student has entered the welding workforce.

and team of teachers is aware that students with learning differences also come with under-developed executive functioning skills. As such, educators provide instruction and support to develop executive function skills, which include task initiation, planning and organization, impulse control and goal setting. Attention to these important skills lays a foundation whereby students can access designed curriculum at their highest potential.

Based on each student’s psychoeducational evaluation, the school’s population possesses a very diverse set of needs. To meet the needs of its unique student body, The Brighton School employs an eclectic array of programs, approaches and strategies. The school’s innovative curriculum embeds multi-sensory (auditory, visual, kinesthetic and tactile) strategies in all content areas, while simultaneously developing and reinforcing executive functioning skills and social/ emotional development. This approach continues beyond the regular classrooms into art, technology and physical education classes as well.

Ultimately, the Brighton School promotes the intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth of students with dyslexia and related learning differences and supports each child in achieving their highest potential through the implementation of evidencebased instructional techniques. The school’s mission is to fully equip its students to become successful adults and lifelong learners. This will remain its focus as it looks towards a bright and exciting future.

“Take content off the page, and put it into the hands of the kids.” is a mantra heard throughout the school. Done well, learning is translated in a way students can understand. Brighton’s students need to touch learning, build learning, and create learning through all their senses. The school’s students require multiple experiences with content to solidify learning. Teaching students the way they learn is a way of life at The Brighton School. On average, a dyslexic student needs up to 1500 exposures before learning is firmly placed into long-term memory. In the age of more content at a quicker pace, The Brighton School aims to facilitate learning as much as possible, working with students to understand their needs. The school’s administration
