INTERESTS

An implementation studio with a demanding set of deliverables including design schematic, model, and site furnishing. Prompt: to take a standard, lower income 1800 sqft home, trim 200 sqft off footprint to leave money aside for a climatically responsive landscape in the city of Long Beach, CA. I took on the challenge of designing a corner lot home. This project is published as a case Journal of Green Building––”The Price of Comfort: How Landscape and Architectural Design Can Reduce Human Dependence on Climate Control” written by professor Christy O’Hara. 2

MADONNA PLAzA COURTYARD San Luis Obispo, CA Activate the existing cold, hard corridor into a hidden destination for local shoppers. The courtyard is activated with elevated decking that spans the narrow 17 foot wide “valley” formed from Staples and Bed Bath & Beyond buildings. The vegetated “valley floor” is open and ntavigable to anyone who wishes to explore and reach new vantage points as a person would naturally do in a real canyon. 10

Introduction Rock View Winery on the Spanish Springs Ranch meshes high-end, contemporary built form, with a rural landscape adjacent to healthy central coast California communities. The location offers spectacular views of the ocean, rolling vineyards, and old growth oak trees. Santa Margarita Lake

Los Osos

Goals and Objectives 1 Optimize the economic potential of the ranch by developing vineyards on suitable lands. a Locate vineyards to be visible from Price Canyon Rd, the proposed arterial route, and from the winery. b Consolidate vines on large masses of open land with appropriate soil types. 2 Create a high profile but context sensitive identity for the winery and tasting room. a Locate signage into the hillside and avoid development on 30% slopes to minimize visual obstruction of natural environment. b Take advantage of ocean views from the tasting room, patio, and picnic area by placing these elements on the south-west corner of building. 3 Showcase the ranch as a sustainable and cutting edge development. a Provide contemporary architecture with all amenities and function consolidated into one building. b Promote visitor interaction and education on entire grounds of property, including crush pad and barrel room by providing path ways and deck lookouts.

San Luis Obispo

Lopez Lake

Location Explanation The winery is built around a 15’ diameter bolder sitting on a saddle on the Spanish Springs property. All by itself, this rock’s location captures a dramatic panorama that can make any wine taste better.

An installation underneath the bleachers of Spanos Stadium on Cal Poly’s campus. Concept was based off the theme of bigotry towards body types–big and small. The physical creation is to represent a human artery that is bursting from a cholesterol build-up. The orange implies the walls of the artery while the yellow represents the cholesterol. Derogatory terms are written on the “plexiglass” sheets for emotional effect. Model is 7.5’ long.

“San Luis Obispo, CA” A residential landscape that speaks to the modern aesthetic. Modernism is met with geometric shapes in built form that intervene and contrast significantly from the natural shapes in the land and plant forms. Clients are the “DINKS” - Double Income No Kids. The yard is about entertainment and should accommodate for large social gatherings.

80-acre site owned by the NPS. Competition was to design a sustainable marine research lab with a list of facilities and requirements to be met. My approach involved historical documentation of the bay and being true to the natural shoreline by establishing a thorough waste water treatment system, and power conductivity investment for the entire island of St. Croix. Outside of the competition, I delved further into the project by creating a set of construction documents for the parking lot.

PERSONAL PROJECTS

KESSLER RESIDENCE Fontana, CA Worked in conjunction with Jonescape Construction to design an entry path to front door with seating for clients to watch grandchildren play on front lawn. I sketched out wall layout and form to mimic the “ascension of San Gabriel mountains in the background.

POOL EQUIPMENT WALL Claremont, CA I worked solo to build a slump stone wall encasing the pool equipment at my parents home. Some challenges included floating the foundation over the channel of pipes leading to the pool; trimming the wall caps to allow for the control box to open.

Small shady side yard off the dining room door of my Aunt and Uncle’s home. This is DB Designs first solo design build project and construction is to be completed in spring 2014. Asian theme. Fence is surfaced 1x6 cedar. Some challenges include high water table in the sandy beach soil which required alternative materials in the fence post construction.
