Daniel Behan The Cradle of Civilization Daniel Behan teaches American and World history classes at Elijah Parish Lovejoy Middle School in Rochester, New York, and says that he always tries to make his classes fun.

He teaches three American History classes and three World History classes each semester. "The American History class is pretty straightforward, for the most part," he says. "I teach the birth and development of that landmass we know today at the United States, with a special emphasis on its geography, economy, government, military, and foreign affairs."

Daniel Behan Books In the Home Daniel Behan has been teaching history at the middle school level for nearly twenty years, and at the college level for about ten. Even when he isn't in the classroom at Elijah Parish Lovejoy Middle School in Rochester, New York, where he works full time, Daniel Behan is apt to be teaching somewhere. He teaches history at a local community college two nights a week during the summer. But more important, he says, he volunteers many hours of his time every year with Turn the Page, a childhood literacy program.

Childhood literacy is an important issue, says Daniel Behan. "Introducing book in the home is the single most important factor in influencing a child's early educational success. I always urge parents to expose their kids to book: to the classics, like Goodnight Moon, even though it doesn't have any text. And to Dr. Seuss. And so much more. It can make all the difference."

Daniel Behan No Short Cuts Daniel Behan has many passions in life. One of his passions is teaching: he holds a Masters degree in Childhood Education from the University of Rochester, and is a history teacher at Elijah Parish Lovejoy Middle School in Rochester, New York.

Another of his great passions in playing golf. As a teacher in a public school system he gets his summers off. He teaches part-time at a local community college, but spends as much time as he can on the golf course at Oak Hill Country Club, where he has been a member for many years. "It takes a lot of practice at golf to really get good," says Daniel Behan. "And it helps if your patience level is really high." He says that mental discipline is just as important to golf as is the physical discipline, and advises all golf novices to take some advice from more experienced players. If they do, chances are they will improve their games more quickly than if they did not.

Daniel Behan Point of View Daniel Behan is a veteran teacher who lives and works in Rochester, New York. He teaches American and World history at the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Middle School, and during the summer months teaches those same courses a couple of nights a week at a local community college. World History, he says, is a very fascinating subject. But he says that he tries to avoid teaching it from a Eurocentric point of view. "Most of the student body is white, and I could stick with standard European history if I wanted to," Daniel Behan says.

"But I think that would be doing these kids a real disservice.“Most people want to know where they came from, he says, and his uses his World History course as an opportunity to explain the movements of the world's population and the development of its economy in the most neutral way that he can.
