THE LATEST IN ART, ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN PLASTIC FURNITURE, WOOD TOWERS AND CERAMICS ARE HOT
Clockwise from top: A proposed wooden skyscraper in Tokyo, a Flotsam table by Brodie Neill—and the fragments of plastic it's made from—and a ceramic pitcher by Natalie Herrera.
for what's new and cool in the worlds of art, architecture and design? Below, the latest trends, unearthed: Looking ART
Last year, as fashion types posted pictures on Instagram of their weekends throwing clay, Vogue called the craft “the new yoga." Certainly there is a growing appetite for beautiful homewares and sculpture, made from organic materials and produced by a talented generation of new ceramists. Natalie Herrera is one such rising star. The graphic designer has taken the fundamentals she learned at the Rhode Island School of Design and applied them to a new medium. Her ceramics, wheel-thrown or hand-built, take on an angularity, structuraland graphic quality. “Most of the inspiration for my ceramics comes from architecture,” says Herrera, including Brutalist buildings in Colombia and parallel forms in New York City. Much of her art, created under the brand High Gloss, which she launched in 2013, has a practical use, such as stacking cups without handles that work to conserve cupboard space. More and more, though, she is being commissioned to create ceramic sculptural pieces. “Many of my friends have objects all over their home, a mini-museum of pieces,” she says. ARCHITECTURE
Europe’s Neolithic long house, a timber dwelling built around 6,000 B.C., was a solid home for as many as 30 people. Thousands of years later, the Romans developed timber framing; in China, ancient temples were usually built of wood. Fast-forward to 2018, and architects are bringing back wood for megatowers. Five times lighter than concrete, but with a comparable strength-per-weight ratio, high thermal performance, and qualities that make it pleasant to work with and live with—nontoxic, calming, organic and inherently beautiful—wood is increasingly being used in creative ways for pioneering construction projects. New types of engineered timber enable architects to build bigger and higher. Cross-laminated timber, or CLT, is produced by layering sections at right angles, while hybrid CLT combines the material with steel. Earlier this year, Sumitomo Forestry unveiled plans for a 350-meter, 70-story hybrid skyscraper in Tokyo, which will be the world’s tallest wooden building. DESIGN
Designers are coming up with ingenious solutions to recycle what has already been discarded, particularly plastic. Ocean terrazzo is the invention of furniture designer Brodie Neill, who was inspired to create a new take on traditional marble as a response to the plastic he saw damaging the coastline of his native Tasmania. Fragments of plastic that washed up on beaches are being used to create eye-catching furniture, such as the Flotsam table. And at furniture company Pentatonic, comfortable desk chairs are created using soft Plyfix, a textured felt you would never guess used to be plastic. Even Ikea is at it; its Kungsbacka kitchen doors are made from recycled PET bottles. Clockwise from top: Sumitomo Forestry, Brodie Neill, Natalie Herrera/High Gloss

5 PLACES TO VISIT THAT WILL DELIGHT YOUR SENSES LESSER - KNOWN VACATION SPOTS SPAN FIVE CONTINENTS
T
his looks to be the year for immersive travel. Or so says Eric Grayson, founder and CEO of Discover 7 Travel, a luxury-travel concierge service. “People want to do more than go to Paris and stay at the Ritz,” he says. “Instead, individuals are looking for travel that touches more of their senses.” Read on for five experiential travel spots worth journeying to this year.

WYOMING
While luxury dude ranches have always been popular, Brush Creek Ranch in Wyoming has ramped up the luxe element to the max. Set on a 30,000-acre working cattle ranch in Saratoga, a town perched in the south-central part of the state, the award-winning property features luxury lodge rooms, cabin suites or cabin residences. “This is a great getaway for families,” Grayson says. “You can take the family for horseback rides, whitewater rafting adventures, fly-fishing, hiking, and train adventures of all sorts.”

BOLIVIA
No trip to Bolivia is complete without a visit to Lake Titicaca, famous for its crystal-clear waters that reflect the snowy peaks of the nearby Cordillera Real and the world’s largest salt flat, Salar de Uyuni. “It’s famous for its otherworldly landscapes, with salt as white as snow that looks like you’re walking on clouds,” says Lia Batkin, co-founder of In the Know Experiences, a travel lifestyle company in New York. Bolivia offers the best Amazon wildlife spotting in South America, too. “The pampas tour—a wetland savanna area where the chance of seeing animals is much greater, as they aren’t hidden among trees—is a real highlight of the country’s eco-tourism,” she says. Consider starting your exploration with a tour of La Paz, the nation’s capital. “While you’re in La Paz, the five-star Atix Hotel is a must-stay,” Batkin adds.

ICELAND
No matter the season, Iceland is a big draw. “Iceland boasts incredible experiences and spectacular scenery anytime of year,” says John Spence, president of Scott Dunn Private Journeys, a Londonbased custom travel company. Spence suggests a restful stay at the new Retreat at Blue Lagoon, a resort plus spa that’s built into an 800-year-old volcano and is surrounded by the Blue Lagoon’s mineral-rich geothermal waters. 4

SRI LANKA
Luxury travelers seeking a more quiet and laid-back alternative to India are flocking to Sri Lanka, Grayson says. “The culture is fascinating, the terrain is diverse, and it’s an appealing place to those who have either been to India before or are seeking an additional flavor of the region.” Consider staying at Ceylon Tea Trails, a Relais & Chateaux resort situated amid mountains and lush tea fields. The resort features five restored colonial-era tea-planter bungalows, complete with period furnishings. “Guests can relax, hike and experience a rural part of this incredibly beautiful country,” Grayson says. RWANDA
The recent opening of Wilderness Safaris’ Bisate Lodge, and the imminent arrival of One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, a new lodge from luxury safari specialists, puts Rwanda’s wildlife-rich Volcanoes National Park in the spotlight for 2018 and beyond. “Set within the dramatic Virunga Mountains, the Volcanoes National Park is home to spectacular wildlife, including the endangered mountain gorilla,” says George Morgan-Grenville, founder of Red Savannah, a London-based travel company that creates tailor-made travel experiences worldwide. “It is here that American zoologist Dian Fossey famously studied the species.” While there, guests can visit the research center and her grave, which lies beside that of Digit, her favorite gorilla. Further afield, One&Only recently opened the doors of Nyungwe House in Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest National Park. “Set within a working tea plantation, Nyungwe House offers wild chimpanzee tracking, gastronomic picnics, kayaking, mountain biking, trekking, and invigorating spa treatments,” Morgan-Grenville adds. Each of the 22 rooms has an open fireplace as well as a private deck for watching wildlife and contemplating the forest views.

translucent brown, and the pudding-like yolk is a greenish-black. It's Benu's take on the thousand-year-old egg—for millions of people across Asia, a classic comfort food. “For any food that comes from a particular culture, so much of what determines if it’s comforting or not is your experience and reference point for that dish,” says Corey Lee, Benu’s chef. Even people who are familiar with the egg’s intense smell of ammonia—which Lee’s Benu cookbook promises gives way to a “deep savoriness” when eaten— are given a new experience by the fact that it’s made from a quail egg. Our collective sense of comfort food has quickly evolved in recent years. “At no other point in history has our sense of comfort been more global than it is today,” says Lee, whose restaurant has the highest possible Michelin ranking—3 stars. Comfort foods are redefining fine dining, a departure from the more traditional model that relies on the chef ’s purchasing power and ability to gather the most luxurious ingredients, Lee suggests. “It’s being able to enjoy something you’ve had before but in a new context, and that makes you feel appreciation for your own culture’s cuisine or the flavors you grew up with,” he says. “There’s a lot of value in that.” RICE AND VEGETABLE DISHES
Opposite page, top: Eric Wolfinger; Below: Benu
Lee, 40, who grew up with Korean food, finds comfort in rice and intensely flavored preserved vegetables. “That’s the basis of Korean cuisine,” he says. “You spend a lot of time making a batch of kimchi, or fermenting vegetables. At mealtime, you serve a big bowl of rice, and then you have a huge spread of different dishes.” The chef says that he appreciates all the different ways of enjoying rice, including Chinese-style fried rice, congee (a type of rice porridge popular in East Asian countries), and Italian-style risotto. SIMPLE SEAFOOD
Guests at Benu have said the marinated mussels stuffed with noodles are quite comforting. Served without the shells, the mussels make for a visually striking presentation, with stripes made from egg whites, carrots, cucumbers, and braised kombu seaweed. “You’re experiencing something you’ve had a thousand times, in the simplest, most humble way, but in a way that you don’t associate with a gastronomic experience,” Lee says.

INSIDE BERLIN’S MITTE AND CHARLOTTENBURG TWO OF THE GERMAN CAPITAL'S TONIEST AREAS DAZZLE BUYERS
W
hen Klaus Wowereit, a former mayor of Berlin, described his city as “poor, but sexy” in 2003, he was commenting on its growing appeal in the years following the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification. At that time, young, creative types were flocking to the city, lured by its history, edgy urban vibe, affordable rents and empty spaces. Since then, the city has transformed itself into a world hub for contemporary art, dining, fashion, design and tech startups—and it is still a work in progress. As a result, there has been an increase in the number of international buyers investing in the German capital’s property market, particularly in central neighborhoods such as Mitte and Charlottenburg. Mitte, the once-neglected historic core of the city, which comprises the former East and West districts, includes some of the city’s most iconic attractions, such as Museum Island, Brandenburg Gate, and the Reichstag. Among its many new developments is Potsdamer Platz, a former Cold War wasteland rebuilt as a public square with futuristic buildings that house shops and offices. West of Mitte is Charlottenburg, Berlin’s most elegant and traditional neighborhood, characterized by wide streets and refined parks and residential buildings. It is home to the 17th-century baroque Charlottenburg Palace and Kurfürstendamm, a leafy boulevard seen as Berlin’s version of the Champs-Élysées, lined with hotels, cafes, and designer boutiques. HOUSING STOCK
Mitte is mostly made up of apartments in deluxe new-build developments, says Monica Baier of Berlin Sotheby’s International Realty. Her office is selling a 4,843-square-foot, five-bedroom duplex penthouse apartment in Mitte for €12 million euros. It has an indoor pool and a rooftop outdoor pool, which is surrounded by a decked terrace with sweeping views of Berlin.
15
A loft apartment in Charlottenburg.
Meanwhile, in Charlottenburg, apartment buildings mostly date from the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries and are built in Wilhelminian style, with high ceilings, large rooms, and attractive stucco facades. Berlin Sotheby’s International Realty is marketing a 1,948-square-foot renovated one-bedroom apartment in a 1910s building for €3.7 million. It has floorto-ceiling windows and an open-plan living room, with a designer kitchen and wooden flooring throughout. WHO LIVES THERE
Mitte and Charlottenburg attract similar types of buyers: They include investors, Berliners relocating within the city, and German and overseas second-home owners. While Mitte and Charlottenburg are high-value areas, household types are diverse. Residents are a mix of single professionals, retirees, and families. Top restaurants in Mitte include Borchardt, a Berlin institution since 1895 that serves French and German dishes; Grill Royal, an upmarket eatery serving oysters, steaks and seafood; and La Blanca at Hotel de Rome, which has a Mediterranean-inspired menu. Most restaurants in Charlottenburg offer traditional and high-end international dining. Highlights include Grosz, which has the look of a Jazz Age cafe; Neni at the 25hours Hotel; and Restaurant Tim Raue, an eatery by the two-Michelin-starred Berlin chef of the same name. Charlottenburg’s Kurfürstendamm and its charming side streets offer luxury retail labels, such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent, as well as independent shops and boutiques. Mitte, meanwhile, has Friedrichstrasse, which provides designer brands such as Hugo Boss, Gucci, and Breitling. The three best international schools in the area are in Mitte: Berlin Metropolitan School, which carries kindergarten through 12th grade; Berlin Cosmopolitan School, which offers an education for preschool to secondary students; and Phorms Campus Berlin Mitte, a bilingual German-English private nursery, primary, and secondary school.

olt, Renfrew & Co., popularly known as Holt Renfrew or just Holt’s, isn’t merely a chain of upscale department stores: It’s a rich part of Canadian history. Holt 's was founded in 1837 as W.S. Henderson & Co., a modest hat shop in Quebec City, by Irish merchant William S. Henderson. Soon after, it was adding more merchandise to its inventory and expanding. By the late 19th century, the shop had changed hands and owners more than once and was known as G.R. Renfrew & Co. It was named “furriers in ordinary” to Her Majesty Queen Victoria. By 1901, the company had become Holt, Renfrew & Co. and went on to be furriers to Queen Alexandra, King Edward VII, King George V and Edward VIII. Holt’s had also begun expanding into Toronto and other Canadian locations, and in the 1930s established exclusive accounts with leading European designers. In 1947, it hosted Christian Dior, the world’s most famous designer at the time, when he was launching his “New Look” collection in his bid to reinstate French luxury fashion and femininity in the wake of World War II. Today, Holt Renfrew is controlled by the Selfridges Group, which has W. Galen Weston as chairman and also owns Selfridges in London. And over the years, the stores have become the No. 1 destination in Canada for luxury goods. Locations in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver cater to buyers, offering high-end retail, including a number of exclusive brands, in a bright, spacious atmosphere. INSIDE THE STORES
Among the brands exclusively offered at Holt Renfrew you’ll find womenswear and footwear brands Alani, Ba&sh, Juun. J and Dorateymur; menswear brands Sunspel and Title of Work; and beauty brands Grown Alchemist, Frederic Malle, Nannette de Gaspe and Erno Laszlo, among others. These are available alongside wellknown luxury names like Gucci, Prada, Hermès and Burberry. Meanwhile, Holt’s announced in 2017 that the on-site Holts Cafés in five locations would be transformed into Colette Grand Cafés, an upscale sit-down French-inspired restaurant operated by Toronto’s Chase Hospitality Group, and renowned for culinary excellence and creating beautifully designed spaces. Finally, ethically minded shoppers will be pleased to know that Holt’s requires its vendors to adhere to strict trading standards that include no child or forced labor. In recent years, American brands Saks and Nordstrom have made moves into Canada, but it’s Holt’s that remains steeped in illustrious Canadian history and in Canadian hearts. Holt Renfrew

LESS IS MORE MINIMALIST HOMES FOCUS OUR ATTENTION ON WHAT REALLY MATTERS By Iyna Bort Caruso
M
inimalism is design through simplicity—of form, colour, volume and detail—yet this aesthetic isn't simple to achieve. Go too far in one direction, and the result is cold, even sterile; cross the line the other way, and messiness begins. Hitting the sweet spot involves an architectural and decorative language of unity and repetition and the clever manipulation of space—not as an element to be filled, but as one to be celebrated—as well as light. “Good minimalism recognises that light is integral to design,” says Trish Bragg of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty in Denver. “There has always been a passionate base of people who gravitate toward this style of home,” she notes. “Buyers feel they will live more simply, with less stress, in a minimalist home: less clutter, more room to breathe.” A property that Bragg represents uses minimalism to great effect. A 13,000-square-foot residence built on private wooded acreage in the middle of the city, the Denver Art House, as it is known, is modern, symmetrical and conceived to maximize the beautiful Colorado sunlight. The home’s architect, Jim Olson, founding partner of Olson Kundig in Seattle, notes that “minimalist architecture frames what is important,” in this case, an impressive art collection, nature and light. “People want happy, inviting spaces that inspire them to live better lives,” says Bragg. “Minimalist architecture is a step in that direction.”
New York-based writer Iyna Bort Caruso has contributed to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsday and others.

OSMAN YOUSEFZADA DRESSES THE STRONG WOMAN 24
Osman Yousefzada
THE LONDON - BASED DESIGNER'S CULT FOLLOWING INCLUDES WELL- KNOWN ACTRESSES
sman Yousefzada has reason to celebrate. Last year the British-born designer sold a majority stake in his nameO sake brand to private equity firm Luxcite, which helps fund
niche luxury companies. And this summer, the brand will open its first shop—a five-story “gallery cum bookshop cum retail space—and an event space, too,” says Yousefzada—in London. No wonder he turned his fall-collection runway show earlier this year into a house party, where models, dancers, and the press mingled, toasted, and boogied midafternoon. Founded in 2008, the on-the-rise Osman label boasts a cult following that includes Anne Hathaway, Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma Watson, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé, who wore a sculptural black-and-white Osman jumpsuit to the 2013 Grammy Awards. We spoke with the designer recently about his past, future, and why he’s “never froufrou.”
Your parents are Afghan immigrants and, like many immigrant parents—like many parents, frankly—they hoped their children would follow a more conventional career path. But…fashion designer?
They came [to Britain] as economic migrants, and tried to get a better life for themselves, worked really hard, and thought their children would do something in a noncreative field. And most of my siblings have. In a way I’ve always been the odd one. I came to London and didn’t look back. [He laughs.] How tough was that?
Not being this conventional boy was difficult. In my family, the women did women things, men did men things. My mother had a dressmaking business in a room of our house. All the ladies would come round—she’d measure them up, make their clothes. I was entranced by these women who’d wear the clothes, paint their nails, and transform themselves. It seemed magical. Your designs are architectural, spare. You once said, “I’m never froufrou…never frilly.”
I can do froufrou, but it’s not my default setting. I’ve done tulle dresses recently, but they’re not super-girly. I’m attracted to women who are strong, who stand for something. I want the clothes to allow them to shine through, like the old saying about whether you’re wearing the clothes or the clothes are wearing you. I like crazy and over-the-top, but a garment should make you feel better about yourself. Osman Yousefzada creates fashions that are "never froufrou." The designer, left.
We hear a lot about the #MeToo movement these days. How do you think it will impact what women wear?
Fashion is always a sign of the times. But there are still women who want to wear a sexy dress and show off their body. It’s as if she’s saying, “I’m wearing something sexy and revealing. but I’m wearing it for myself rather than wearing it for you.” You can look but don’t touch. That’s maybe what’s becoming more topical, more de rigueur. Is that true on both sides of the Atlantic?
It’s the same woman I dress, in London, Germany, or New York. She’s no-nonsense—a strong, confident woman with an arty bent. And she knows what she wants—a daytime wardrobe that can switch up so she can have some fun. You find those women all over?
Definitely.

CITY CONFIDENTIAL 6 MUST-VISIT SPOTS FOR EATING AND DRINKING IN HONG KONG
27
U
ntil recently, Hong Kong equated formality with status and sophistication. In recent years, however, the city’s drinking and dining scene has flourished, led by innovative establishments that have regional authenticity and a sense of cultural identity at their core. 1
POTATO HEAD
Indonesian import Potato Head brings a relaxed Balinese vibe to Hong Kong’s hip Sai Ying Pun neighborhood. Conceived as a multiconcept space, the achingly stylish space combines a retail store, a restaurant serving dishes from its native archipelago, and a bar where classic cocktails are given an aromatic twist, as in its Indo Bloody Mary, spiced with sambal, tamarind, and fresh red chili. However, time is best spent in the music room, a “secret” space dedicated to acoustic integrity, where audiophiles will appreciate the extensive vinyl library, and aesthetes the Wes Anderson– inspired midcentury interiors. 2
THE OLD MAN
Ernest Hemingway serves as the inspiration for The Old Man (a play on the writer’s The Old Man and the Sea), a compact cocktail bar from a trifecta of industry veterans: Roman Ghale, Agung Prabowo, and James Tamang. An abstract mosaic in the novelist’s form watches over the bar, where masterful hands mix exceptional drinks, each of which is named for a Hemingway tale. Those lucky enough to get front-row seats should ask the bartenders to mix up some off-menu Hemingway favorites. Top: Happy Paradise rocks neon lighting. Right: Yardbird is effortlessly cool—and hard to get into.

DR. FERN’S GIN PARLOUR
Don’t be put off by its shopping mall location. Dr. Fern’s Gin Parlour is one of the city’s best hidden bars. Behind an unassuming door marked “Consulting Room,” staff in white lab coats wait to ensure that you receive proper treatment for whatever ails you in the form of a libation—gin-based, of course. With over 250 bottles to choose from, there is one for every palate, as well as impeccably executed versions of the classics. 4
YARDBIRD
After outgrowing its original (and cramped) Sheung Wan site, Hong Kong’s original hipster hangout recently upsized. Thankfully, it lost none of its effortless cool in the process. Unfortunately—despite being able to accommodate significantly more diners—the wait times are just as long, which should be seen as testament to the quality of Yardbird’s yakitori offerings rather than reason to complain. Prized for its chicken skewers, the additional floor space is reflected in an expanded menu, which boasts delicately flavored seasonal dishes, all best washed down with the restaurant’s excellent selection of sake. 5

HAPPY PARADISE
From May Chow, Asia’s Best Female Chef of 2017, a plaudit awarded by Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, Happy Paradise is also her most audacious endeavor. Mini mosaic tiles, terrazzo surfaces and unapologetic neon lighting assert this bold eatery’s proud Hong Kong identity from the outset, and the contemporary interiors are complemented by Chow’s inventive neo-Cantonese cuisine. At once nostalgic and entirely unique, dishes range from the simple—like char siu (barbecue pork) egg rice—to the adventurous, such as pig’s brain served with burnt pear vinaigrette—with plenty of elevated, reinterpreted classics in between. 6
NEW PUNJAB CLUB
Colonial-chic interiors and gloriously campy service make New Punjab Club, the passion project of local group Black Sheep Restaurants, utterly charming. Serving cuisine purely from the Punjabi region of northern India and Pakistan, vibrant tandoori, fragrant chaat and silky smooth makhani are big draws, with each dish taking its heritage seriously. The restaurant is nothing if not playful, however, and a roving gin trolley ensures that a good time is had by all. Previous pages: Potato Head Hong Kong. pting for vertical living has long involved tradeoffs: services versus square footage, turnkey versus autonomy, convenience versus community. But with highly equipped, low-density condominium towers, buyers no longer have to compromise: Distinctive architecture, oversize residences and ultra-luxe services are turning high-rise structures into high-networth communities, with amenities fostering social interaction and a sense of place among affluent neighbors. In the U.S. alone, the landmark 58-story Woolworth Building in downtown Manhattan recently underwent a multiyear conversion, as French-born architect Thierry W Despont transformed the top 30 floors into 33 loft-like condominiums called the Woolworth Tower Residences. In Miami, the Zaha Hadid-designed One Thousand Museum, overlooking Museum Park, will offer 83 units over 62 stories later this year, an area of nearly one million square feet. “We could have maxed out the
density and had up to 500 smaller units,” says co-developer Louis Birdman. Instead, residences range from 4,600 to more than 10,000 square feet, with 30,000 square feet of amenity space that include a private dining hall, sky lounge, aquatic center, spa and rooftop helipad. Also in Miami, the 54-story Turnberry Ocean Club in Sunny Isles Beach, due in late 2019, will feature 154 residences and six stories of amenities, notably a stock-trading lounge and sky theater. Mayi de la Vega of One Sotheby’s International Realty calls these buildings “among the most innovative developments in South Florida.” Birdman concurs: “Buyers don’t mind paying more as long as they’re getting more. Someone who goes in to buy a Rolls Royce is typically not asking what kind of gas mileage it gets.” New York-based writer Iyna Bort Caruso has contributed to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsday and other publications.

THE WONDERS OF WALLPAPER 40
BREAK THE RULES
“People are scared of wallpaper, but the truth is there are no rules—you can add a modern wallpaper to a traditional home or add traditional wallpaper to a modern home, and either way you’ll have something you love. Embrace what you’ve got. Paper a dark room in a dark wallpaper to play up the space’s intimacy. And a small room can handle a bold pattern—it adds drama.” FULLY COMMIT
“Ditch the accent wall—when wallpapering, it’s best to fully commit. Go big or go home. A varsity move is to paper the ceiling. A wallpapered ceiling turns a small space into a jewel box.” MIX AND MATCH CAREFULLY
“When it comes to mixing patterns, let one of them be the star. If you’re going for a bold, large-scale pattern on the walls, the rest of the patterns in the space should be smaller in scale.” THINK ABOUT ADJACENT SPACES
DESIGN OPTIONS SPAN FROM BASIC TO BOLD AND NEUTRAL TO COLORFUL
I
Jonathan Adler
n the design world, wallpaper is the great change artist. It has the power to transform the look and feel of a room in a blink—adding glamour, creating whimsy, lending refinement. Few decor modifications are as instantaneous or as drastic. “Wallpaper can take a boring, cookie-cutter white box and make it sparkle with color and pattern,” says Jonathan Adler, the famed designer, author and potter. “By adding something textured, like grass cloth, it can make a room feel architecturally more interesting.” Wallpaper designs are as intricate as they are basic, as colorful as they are neutral, and as bold as they are minimalist. There are motifs and styles that appeal to every whim and design sensibility. Today’s iterations of papers aren’t, in fact, limited to paper. From a practical standpoint, there are vinyl varieties prized for durability in high-traffic zones. Glamorous metallics, which can be stamped, printed or even layered with motifs, create reflective depth in a room. Flocked wallpaper features a velvetlike texture and can be found in ornate damask patterns, geometric prints and florals for added drama. Textural types include grass cloth, which is made from woven grass and has an organic vibe, and beadboard, which has the look and feel of wood. (Martha Stewart's beadboard iteration mimics the effect of wainscoting.) Then there are faux snakeskin, leather and crocodile skins. And for the ultimate luxury, there are hand-painted chinoiserie and sumptuous silk-dyed walls from couture companies like de Gournay. Whether you’re dressing the small confines of a powder room or the expanses of a great room, options are infinite, and knowing what to choose can often be a daunting task. To help whittle the wallpaper world, we asked Adler for his top tips on bringing your walls to life.
“Like with music, transitions are key. You want each space to flow into another without too much of a jarring mix. If a space leads directly into another, use complementary colors.” CONSIDER THE PRINTING PROCESS
“The trend nowadays is for digitally printed paper, but I much prefer the oldfashioned way: screen-printed. When shopping for wallpaper, look for one that is screen-printed (like all of ours!) rather than digitally printed—it’s much more labor-intensive, but it’s worth it. The color is more saturated and the pattern is crisper. When it comes to wallpaper, you get what you pay for.”

Lauren Bush Lauren, it’s all in the bag. Or the coffee cup. Or party of six squeezed into a college dorm room. ForaThese are all ways FEED, the company Lauren launched in 2007,

raises funds to fight hunger. Today, the mission remains the same: Create good products that are also a conduit for getting consumers to engage in the issue of hunger, especially childhood hunger. “We turned 10 last year and reached a big milestone of giving: 100 million meals,” says Lauren, 34. Those meals have been served in 63 countries, including the U.S., where FEED recently started working to provide breakfasts for students who already qualify for free lunches. The company sells fun and functional totes, stylish leather saddle bags, and jewelry and other accessories. A FEED cafe opened in Brooklyn in 2017, and the company helps coordinate suppers where friends can meet over a meal and raise money to feed others at the same time. Hunger is a daily reality for more than 800 million people around the world, according to FEED statistics. “That disparity, even in our own country, is staggering,” says Lauren, who saw the enormousness of the problem firsthand while traveling to Central America and Africa with the U.N. World Food Programme when she was a student at Princeton University. Lauren, a niece of former President George W. Bush and granddaughter of former President George H. W. Bush, is no stranger to fashion. As a model in her early 20s, she was on the cover of Vogue, and she interned with designer Zac Posen. Her husband, David Lauren, is the son of Ralph Lauren and works in the family business. Bringing two passions together, Lauren launched the company with the FEED 1 bag ($98), a reversible tote inspired by the bags of food rations she saw handed out during her travels. The sale of a bag provides one year of school meals for a child. There are also more upscale styles, like the mini Simone saddle bag ($185), the sale of which provides 75 school meals. Proceeds from the company’s sales go to the FEED Foundation, which then allocates funds to partners like the U.N. World Food Programme and Children’s Fund and the Food Bank for New York City.
For International Women’s Day, poet Cleo Wade and journalist Arianna Huffington, among others, designed totes for FEED’s Women on a Mission campaign. Each bag sold ($38) provides school meals, as well as a $1 donation to another, women-empowering charity. And in May, FEED launched its first travel collection, which includes the Weekender duffel ($168, 75 meals) and a Dopp kit ($48, 15 meals). The company is also working with designers on accessories to complete the collection. FEED products are sold on its website, as well as at the FEED Shop & Cafe. “People can’t buy a bag every day,” Lauren says. “But it’s likely they will get a coffee or a tea every day. And every coffee or pastry or oatmeal they buy gives a meal.” FEED also helps people organize events at home with its FEED Suppers, which can help turn a party into a fund-raiser. Invitations and donations can be handled through FEED’s website, with 100% of the money raised supporting Chicago-based nonprofit Feeding America. Suppers have been hosted by the likes of Reese Witherspoon, and the company celebrated its 10-year anniversary in October with a buzzy supper of its own. But Lauren prefers dialed-down events. “Anyone, anywhere can do it. They can turn a birthday or a party in a dorm room into a FEED supper,” she says. “For me, it’s really cool that everyday people, including myself, can host an event, and part of that can be raising awareness about hunger.”

STROKE OF GENIUS:DENVER'S S*PARK BUILDS A COMMUNITY RARE OASIS OF URBAN COMMUNITY AND FARMING IN THE HEART OF A BUSTLING DOWNTOWN AREA 44
Sothebysrealty.com
hile urban farmers are being pushed out of Denver’s white-hot real estate market, one residential developW ment aims to save them. Sandwiched between the River North
Arts District (RiNo) and historic Curtis Park rests S*Park, aptly named for its heritage as Sustainability Park. The enclave challenges the status quo, celebrating the spirit of urban community and farming, while delivering amenities you won’t find anywhere else—like a 15,000-square-foot park and urban greenhouse in the heart of downtown. At S*Park, “living your best life” is more than just a hashtag. It’s for real—and the solar-powered energy systems and highly efficient building envelope are only the beginning. Residents enjoy upscale amenities such as a dog run, bird houses, underground secured parking, a concierge, yoga studios, a juice bar and James Beard award-winning Uchi Sushi
right outside their front door. “Community” has become the ethos, guiding both the developer, Curtis Park Group, and the full-service architecture firm, Tres Birds Workshop, in every aspect of the design. They’ve also managed to do the impossible—offer housing at attainable prices in a city facing housing shortages and all-time-high prices. “This is all about community,” says Jonathan Alpert, project manager at Curtis Park Group. “We have intentionally and thoughtfully designed this community for interaction—with the sun, with nature, with our neighbors. This isn’t just a building or a project. This community encompasses an entire city block within seven buildings centered around a private central park, urban greenhouse and farm.” The result is a lifestyle unrivaled in Denver, where a lushly landscaped park, balconies and front porches make city living breathable again. The location doesn’t hurt either, situated just one block from Larimer Street and the burgeoning RiNo district. Once an industrial hub, RiNo has transformed into a thriving epicenter for the creative arts, with factories repurposed into restaurants, bars and breweries, art galleries, markets and offices. It’s a community tailor-made for first-time home buyers, young families and empty nesters alike. A place where sun-filled yoga sessions and starlit movie nights coexist with community dog-wash days and local whiskey tastings. S*Park takes it a step further, cultivating a strong sense of community with a vertical greenhouse and urban farm, managed by Altius Farms. What does that mean for residents? It means an exclusive veggie-subscription program, greenhouse tours and classes, and community dinners with Denver’s celebrity chefs, not to mention local produce in your soup and fresh herbs in your cocktails. Exclusive listing brokers Deviree Vallejo and Liz Richards of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty say the project is unlike anything they’ve ever seen. “The team at Tres Birds Workshop and Curtis Park Group partnered to create a rare housing opportunity in a thriving downtown core where for-sale options are hard to find,” Vallejo says. “You won’t find many homes here in this price range, let alone sustainable ones.” Modern townhomes and one-, twoand three-bedroom condos start under $300,000 and range from 500 to 2,500 square feet. To learn more about the S*Park lifestyle and current offerings, visit liveatspark.com or call 303-931-0097.

SPORTS LEGENDS THESE FOUR ICONIC WATCHES HAVE STOOD THE TEST OF TIME
Left to right: the Omega Speedmaster, Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak, and Rolex's Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller.
s vintage watch sales surge, watch designers are scouring the archives to channel the retro vibe in new models. Among A the trendy revivals, a handful of midcentury sport watches—
Breitling’s Navitimer, Omega’s Speedmaster, Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller and Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak—have cultivated enduring legacies that endow them with icon status. The 1950s was a golden era for sport watches as technical advances allowed for more rugged and reliable movements with enhanced shock-resistance, water-resistance, and antimagnetic properties. Designed to perform practical functions for pilots, divers, and drivers, “tool watches” became essential gear for go-getters and fashionable accessories for armchair sportsmen. Breitling debuted its Navitimer in 1952, featuring technical functions—most notably a circular slide rule that pilots used for mathematical conversions and other calculations before calculators. This year, Breitling expanded that legacy with the Navitimer 8 collection, which draws inspiration from cockpit instruments made by the brand’s Eight Aviation Department in the 1930s. The new collection, which offers watches from $3,850 to $8,350, is less technical and more modern, with five models: the B01 chronograph, powered by the in-house automatic Caliber Breitling 01; the Navitimer 8 Chronograph, with a workhorse Valjoux 7750 movement; the Navitimer 8 Unitime world time model, a Day&Date; and an entry-level three-hand Automatic. In 1957, Omega launched the Speedmaster, the first chronograph wristwatch fitted within a tachymeter scale on the bezel for calculating speed, a feature designed with race-car drivers in mind. The model earned the moniker “Moon Watch” when Buzz Aldrin wore his during the first manned lunar landing in 1969. Last year’s Speedmaster Automatic ($8,450) channeled the original’s motor-sport spirit with a distinctive minute track on a matte black dial with orange accents, and a perforated rubber strap. Last year, Rolex marked the 50th anniversary of its premier dive watch, the Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller ($11,350). The latest incarnation was enlarged to 43 millimeters and equipped with the new caliber 3235 movement, endowed with cutting-edge technology and the brand’s Superlative Chronometer certification, ensuring precision. Rolex also fitted the new Sea-Dweller with its trademark Cyclops lens over the date for the first time and printed the name in red on the dial, a nod to the original. When Audemars Piguet tapped renowned watch designer Gerald Genta to design a groundbreaking sport watch in 1972, Swiss mechanical watchmaking faced an existential crisis with the advent of quartz technology. Genta’s Royal Oak ($34,800) defied convention by combining a brawny steel sport watch with a finely finished automatic movement. Dubbed “Jumbo,” the Royal Oak was instantly recognizable. This year, the brand unveiled a 39-mm Jumbo Extra-Thin with a titanium case, combined with a polished platinum bezel and connecting bracelet links. Once regarded as an iconoclast, Royal Oak's staying power and popularity transformed it into an icon.

A NEW WAY TO BUY & SELL ANTIQUES: SOTHEBY’S VIYET SOTHEBY’S PURCHASE OF VIYET EXPANDS FURNISHING OPTIONS
O
nline shopping has revolutionized the way we buy everything from clothing to everyday basics. Now, we can add fine antiques, rare vintage pieces and designer furniture to the list. Whether you’re looking for a pristine Art Deco accent chair by Jacques Adnet or an 18th-century French farmhouse table, you can start your search at Viyet.com, the online vintage, antique and designer furniture marketplace that was acquired by Sotheby’s in February 2018. Viyet.com made its debut in April 2013 as an e-commerce platform for New York City design aficionados to buy and consign preowned high-end furniture, antiques, and accessories. As of 2018, Viyet has grown to 13 markets across the country, from Atlanta to Los Angeles. In addition to preowned pieces from designers and private collectors, you can also often find new items from showrooms. As a result, Viyet lists hundreds of arrivals weekly, with the selection refreshed on a daily basis. This level of access to great design, combined with Viyet’s exceptional e-commerce platform that makes buying and selling items simple for even budding collectors, creates a truly exciting addition to Sotheby’s. “The challenge of a start-up is rising above the noise and catching people’s attention, so to immediately align with a historic, well-known brand like Sotheby’s gives us an added layer of trust and allows us to reach a global network of clients that would have taken many years to build,” said Viyet CEO Elizabeth Brown, in an interview earlier this year on Sothebys.com. “We are also excited to begin serving Sotheby’s clients as we introduce a fixed-price format, to be considered alongside Sotheby’s traditional and online auction model.”
BUYING ANTIQUES ONLINE WITH CONFIDENCE
Sothebysrealty.com
Online marketplace options include antiques and designer furniture.
Vintage and antique items range from rare investment-quality pieces (such as a Chinese wedding cabinet with crown, offered for $9,520) to fanciful vintage accessories (such as two 1930s bronzed pirate bookends, offered for $150). Every piece has been vetted by Viyet’s curators who assess condition and authenticity in addition to verifying features, colors, measurements, and more. During an in-person appointment, curators take photos of every detail and extensive notes inform the descriptions that appear on each product listing. Potential consignors outside of Viyet’s 13 markets can also schedule a virtual curator appointment, where they can “meet” with a curator via a video-conferencing app. During the appointment, the curator provides direction and coaching on measuring and photographing their items to be listed for sale at Viyet. The curator then uploads the photographs to Viyet’s platform. “I’m quite confident in specialists’ ability to relay condition

virtually, whether at auction or via the Viyet marketplace,” says Alex Gilbert, Viyet's VP of sales and merchandising for 20th-century and contemporary design. “You can always feel free to request additional detail photos.” Potential buyers can speak to Viyet’s client-services team via live chat, phone, or email. Detailed photos of items show the state or condition of the piece. “When dealing with antique furniture and deco -rative arts, signs of age and use (within reason) can add to the charm of a piece,” says David Walker, antiques specialist for Sotheby’s. “In addition, values have reached a point where, in the vast majority of cases, antique furniture can be used and enjoyed without the fear of too much value diminishing," he says. “Of course, structural changes to period furniture and condition points are always noted by the experienced Viyet team prior to listing, and buyers can shop with even more confidence now that Viyet is a part of Sotheby’s.” FINDING THAT PERFECT PIECE
For those who don’t have a specific designer or item in mind, Viyet’s search functions can help narrow down hundreds of antique and vintage options. (You can focus any category by style, color, material, and more.) This

New collectors should consider starting with accessories. “Small [items] are a great way to start a collection,” Gilbert says. Categories that recently have caught her eye include Modernist silver tableware, Fornasetti paperweights, miniature bud vases and Native American baskets. Walker suggests browsing with a budget in mind. “Some very old objects can actually be purchased for surprisingly little,” he says. “Less than $1,000
could buy you a 15th-century Persian vase or a small piece of Roman glass— not the best examples, of course, but things that carry such age that they are sure to spark the imagination. On the more functional side, the same amount could buy you a stylish Thonet chair or an 18th-century brass pricket stick. Possibilities are almost endless.” When it comes time to purchase, Viyet offers two options: “Buy Now” and “Make An Offer.” The “Make an Offer” feature lets you name a price to the seller, who can either accept or counteroffer. BUILDING A COLLECTION
More experienced collectors shopping
with an eye toward value might have noticed that competition for certain categories—such as all things Mid-Century—remains fierce. However, there are gems to be found in periods, categories and styles that are just now being appreciated by collectors. “Some great buys can still be had for original handmade 19th- and 20th-century furniture,” Gilbert says. She observes that Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts are poised to gain attention again. “For me, the key thing is to not let yourself be constrained by a particular look or feel you think you might want, and to stay open to the idea of mixing things.”

INS AND OUTS OF DISPLAYING MODERN ART DON'T BE AFRAID TO MIX UP STYLES OR PERIODS, THE EXPERTS SAY 56
odern art can be many things: Towering sculptures, floorto-ceiling paintings, object installations—all of these M types of works have their rightful places when they live in a museum. But displaying them in the confines of your living room, kitchen or dining room can be an art in itself. We asked two experts in the worlds of design and framing for their best advice. DON’T BE AFRAID TO MIX IT UP
“For me, juxtaposition is everything,” says Rome-based architect and designer Achille Salvagni. “The only…factor that should determine what is kept in and what is kept out is the quality.” If everything in the room is of the same high quality, it’s fine to mix things up, he says. “Mixing periods and styles is important to create a dynamic, but you must be careful to give each piece its own space and allow the room to breathe.” One or two accent colors in a space can help tie different works together and create harmony. Or you might use shapes, materials, symmetry and lighting to find cohesion, Salvagni adds. PROPORTION IS IMPORTANT
A Rome home designed by Achille Salvagni, left. A wall of frames mixes sizes and styles, inset.
No single piece should be too overwhelming in a space, Salvagni says. “The size of the artwork should be in relation to the room itself, to complement the setting," he says. Dara Segal, founder and CEO of SimplyFramed.com, Maumee, Ohio, doesn’t have a hard and fast rule about proportion. “If you truly love a work of art, a few inches here or there shouldn't prevent you from enjoying it. We've seen gallery walls go from floor to ceiling and look amazing. You can also have one small work own a fairly large space—that minimalist effect can work well, too,” she says. “Instead of thinking about the scale of the artwork in relation to the room, think about breaking up your room into smaller vignettes and then scaling your art to that vignette,” Segal says. “So, for example, the space between two windows can be one vignette. Above and around a sofa is another. Over a console or entry table would be another.”
Achille Salvagni, SimplyFramed
FOCUS ON FRAMING
Segal recommends framing each piece in the way that best complements the art inside—not in response to other frames in your collection or the decor of a room. “This approach usually makes for a much more interesting display and ensures that if you choose to hang your piece somewhere else later on, it will still look phenomenal,” she says. And according to Segal, there are a few general rules of thumb for hanging artwork. You'll want at least six to 12 inches of space between any low piece of furniture and your art. Three to six inches is a general guideline for spacing between individual artworks, and 57 inches is a good standard measurement to use from the floor to the center of a large piece of art so it hangs at eye level. “Of course, rules are meant to be broken, and we’ve seen some really fun exceptions to these,” she says.

HOW TO TRANSLATE INSTA- DECOR TRENDS IN REAL LIFE
nstagram is flooded with images of some seriously dreamy decor, and translating those trends into your home is a task Iworth tackling. For advice on how to do that, we asked 34-year-old designer and former Bravo TV host Taylor Spellman.
'MILLENNIAL PINK'
Maybe you didn’t know it by name, but this bubble-gummeets-powdery-pink hue has been not-so-quietly pervading popular culture. You’ve seen it everywhere in packaging, home goods, fashion, and, of course, decor. But we’d argue that moderation is the key in bringing the Instagram (and beyond!) trend toward pink into reality. Spellman’s Take: “Everyone is looking for inspiration in the form of bright, light, and uplifting,” she says. For a client who wanted a pink nursery, Spellman felt pink would be better expressed in accents rather than throughout the whole room. And dimensions can be added using various gradients of the color, such as a fuchsia accent wall and patterned curtains balanced with softer-pink bedding and ottomans. She says this keeps the space “fun but not overpowering.” SOUTHWESTERN 'SCAPE
Woven dream catchers, ceramic bull heads, animal-skin rugs, patterned textiles, cacti—you’ve likely come across various iterations of a Southwestern look with one thing in common:
all the aforementioned items coexisting in the same room. The effect is interesting and eclectic. Spellman’s Take: “It promotes a laid-back and welcoming aesthetic, which you can never go wrong with,” she says. “But it can easily be hokey and tacky if not done properly.” When it comes to trends, she adds, “I always err on the side of ‘less is more.’ I like the Southwestern aesthetic as an inspiration.” For a client’s New York City penthouse, Spellman pared down the look. She incorporated hints of a Southwestern ranch-like feel with earthy hues including camel, green and brown. Her animal-shaped rug doesn’t scream “animal,” thanks to modern black cowhide. As for wall accessories, Spellman achieved a textural look in a streamlined way by using rustic repurposed metal-framed mirrors and modern metal antlers. “The juxtaposition of being in New York while seeming like you are in Santa Fe was a real showstopper that resulted in very happy clients,” she says.
Southwestern decor and "millennial pink" work on Instagram and beyond.
PLANT PROFUSION
According to Instagram, everyone has a green thumb—or rather, as photo evidence might suggest, a green hand. Images fill our feeds with verdant living walls and terracotta pots aplenty. Spellman’s Take: For an urban homeowner who didn’t have a green thumb, Spellman “brought in a large fiddle leaf tree, various succulents for the shelves, and a green couch to give the room an earthy and warm feel,” she says.

LOUVRE ABU DHABI OPENS AND ‘TELLS STORY OF MANKIND’ THE MUSEUM COMES FROM A FRANCE- U.A.E. PARTNERSHIP he first thing visitors might notice as they approach the Louvre Abu Dhabi, on Saadiyat Island, is its massive T domed roof. Its intricate latticework reflects the intercul-
tural collaboration that brought the Jean Nouvel–designed museum, which opened to the public in November 2017, to life. From within, a visitor is treated to the dazzling display of engineering in the dome, but it also features delicate cupolas that are a hallmark of Arabic architecture. Over 10 years of planning, the 17 French cultural institutions that comprise the Agence France-Muséums provided support in bringing the museum to life. Now, it’s a national museum with a world-renowned name and affiliation that lends it a certain gravitas. “When you want to start something incredible, why start from scratch when we could gain the knowledge and expertise of the best and most popular museum in the world,” says Majed Al Hashly, head of the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s communications unit.
Mohamed Somji
INSIDE THE MUSEUM
Dappled sunlight filters down through the dome, illuminating a map of the United Arab Emirates coastline on the floor, which is surrounded by the names of the cities from which the museum’s artworks originate. One of the first displays one encounters is of three fertility masks from different eras and nations. The Louvre Abu Dhabi’s theme is universality, which means its exhibitions are arranged not by region but by time, progressing in chronological order and revealing the common artistic threads that unite all humanity. As visitors move through the 55 detached, minimalist structures that make up the museum's galleries, they take a journey from the prehistoric era to the contemporary, with works from a cross-section of cultures. In the religion-themed Gallery 4, for instance, one encounters a leaf from the Koran, a statue of Shiva, and a Gothic Bible. “The universal narrative is one of the things that makes us distinct from global museums,” Al Hashly says. “With fascinating artifacts from antiquity to present day, we are telling the story of mankind.”

France's Burgundy area produces wines that offer “once-in-alifetime experiences.
62
THE ALLURE OF BURGUNDIES THESE WINES ARE RARE, EVER CHANGING —AND PRICEY
urgundy collectors are chasing an elusive high, and it has nothing to do with the wine’s alcohol content. B“It’s never the same wine twice,” says Chicago-based master
sommelier Alpana Singh, who is the proprietor of three wineforward restaurants in Illinois. “Fickle,” is how she describes the celebrated wine from Burgundy, France, in the east-central region of the country. “It’s always changing in the bottle,” Singh, 41, says, so tastings can truly be once-in-a-lifetime experiences. WHY IT’S SPECIAL
Red burgundies are made with Pinot Noir grapes, while white burgundies use Chardonnay grapes. They can be very hard to get, and older bottles are rare and expensive. Production has always been limited, Singh explains, and market pressure has made supply tighter. All that adds to the wine’s legendary status. There are four tiers of Burgundy wine: grands crus, premiers crus, village appellations, and regional appellations (appellations indicate the area where the grapes were grown). Grand cru is the most rare, thus the most coveted and expensive, with some bottles priced in the tens of thousands of dollars. “It’s the ultimate collector’s wine,” says Singh, who became the youngest female master sommelier when she achieved the title at 26. HOW MUCH IT COSTS
Prices for burgundies skyrocket as bottles become harder to find. Singh says when she started out buying burgundies as a sommelier at Chicago’s acclaimed Everest Restaurant in 2000, she had several $140 to $150 bottles on the list. While buying for her three restaurants—the Boarding House and Seven Lions in Chicago and Terra & Vine in Evanston, Ill.—some of those vintages could be $350 or $500 a bottle, she says. HOW TO SERVE IT
The older the vintage, the more fragile it is, Singh explains. And one way to protect an investment in a bottle is to do nothing. Decanting the wine “accelerates the opening process and could kill the perfume…It’s very delicate,” she says. Instead of decanting, Singh recommends serving Burgundies in globe glasses, which just slightly opens them up. SUGGESTED PAIRINGS
Alpana Singh is a master sommelier.
“If it grows together, it goes together,” she says. Morel and other mushrooms, cream sauces and certain cheeses from the Burgundy region, which tends to have rich cuisine, are good pairings, as are gamey meats like duck and lamb, and even seafood. “Oysters are brilliant with Burgundy,” Singh says.

FOR MOON JUICE FOUNDER, WELLNESS STARTS IN THE KITCHEN
Moon Juice
THE ENTREPRENEUR AND AUTHOR MAKES THE PRACTICAL PRETTY
manda Chantal Bacon, founder of juice and supplement company Moon Juice, puts wellness at the center of everyA thing. And that, not surprisingly, starts in the kitchen.
“The kitchen is such a centerpiece to my world,” the 35-year-old entrepreneur says. “The kitchen in my current house really spoke to me,” says the Los Angeles–based Bacon, who launched Moon Juice in 2011 after years of researching medicinal foods to treat her own chronic illness. “It was big and open with windows looking out to nature. And it had a huge butcher-block counter, which was my functional dream come true.” There, she can feed, entertain, and talk to people while she does her thing. That could be concocting recipes for her second cookbook, due out in the summer of 2019 (her first, The Moon Juice Cookbook: Cook Cosmically for Body, Beauty, and Consciousness, came out in 2016), or whipping up a batch of turmeric-, cinnamon- and cardamom-infused almond milk. “Positioning is really important,” she says. She has a hot-water dispenser next to the sink, which “has made me drink so much more tea and hot-water tonics than I ever did before,” she says. And she stores staples for her tonics— like cayenne pepper and turmeric—in pretty containers. “I want to make beautiful the things I’m going to use and make room for them, instead of putting them away because they are ugly.” She keeps that principle in mind when designing labels for her own products, a line of dusts, powders, and pantry staples promising to “optimize” beauty, brain, and spirit, among other things. Celebrities are fans, and Gwyneth Paltrow once invited Bacon to make Sex Bark (which contains Bacon’s own Sex Dust, “an aphrodisiac warming potion,” along with cacao nibs and the antioxidant ashwagandha) and Spirit Truffles (with hemp seeds, cacao and Spirit Dust) for Goop, Paltrow’s own wellness platform. This summer, Moon Juice is launching a skin-care line. Bacon isn’t a huge fan of gadgets, saying her experience in fine dining—she trained at the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont and worked in restaurants—taught her the value of simplicity. Knife skills, a hot cast-iron skillet, and good salt are fundamental. She eschews microwaves, but has a few gadgets that she wouldn’t want to part with. “I’m in love with my waffle maker,” she says. “I’m in love with my ice-cream maker. And obviously I’m in love with my Vitamix.”

TAYARI JONES’ FAVORITE SUMMER READS WRITER OF AN AMERICAN MARRIAGE LIKES STORIES WITH ‘TEETH’
lthough An American Marriage is Tayari Jones’ fourth book, the author wasn’t prepared for its reception. The story, in A which the relationship of the protagonists, Roy and Celestial,
is torn apart by a wrongful conviction and incarceration, is certainly dramatic. And the book, which came out earlier this year, was described in The New York Times as “beautifully written,” full of “the everyday poetry of the African-American community that begs to be heard.” Then came Oprah Winfrey’s selection of An American Marriage for her book club. “I would have anticipated that it would be all jumping up and down, but it’s a significant responsibility,” Jones tells Reside. "It is an honor, but I’m aware that I’m not just representing myself.” Jones, 47, said the reception to An American Marriage is taking place on a much larger and deeper scale than her previous novels, which she sees as an indication that the events of the story are resonating in a deeply personal way with many readers. “I hope this provides comfort and engages people for whom this experience I’m writing about is significant,” Jones says, “and awakening others to have empathy.” As a reader, Jones says, with the warm weather approaching, she seeks out books that are a bit breezy, but still “have some teeth in them.” Below, her recommendations for summer reads: DOWN CITY: A DAUGHTER’S STORY OF LOVE, MEMORY, AND MURDER, BY LEAH CARROLL
Of this memoir of growing up in Rhode Island, in a family entangled with the mob, Jones says, “I wanted to eat it! I was going on an Oprah cruise and was mad at myself for having read the whole book on the plane. I’m a Southerner, so [Rhode Island] felt like such an exotic place. This will blow your mind—I couldn’t put it down.” CIRCE, BY MADELINE MILLER
“It’s a re-envisioning of the goddess Circe, who detains Odysseus on his way back home. I was impressed by how contemporary it was, despite being set in 400 B.C. It turns out that goddesses have work-life balance issues like the rest of us. I devoured it—I am not a goddess, but me and Circe have a lot of the same problems. That’s what made the writing such a miracle. Then there are cameos: Daedalus rows through at one point, and I thought, ‘You’ve gotta be careful with those wings!’ I read it in a day and a half.” BIG MACHINE, BY VICTOR LAVALLE
“I read this book every summer. I first read it when I was in Paris. I stayed in the cafe, reading and drinking Champagne—it was my travel friend. It’s about a young man working in a Greyhound station, cleaning, who gets a mysterious note that says, ‘I know what you did, and now you have to pay for it.’ He goes on an adventure and ends up living in a compound with people paying off sins they committed, a federation of people seeking truths that everyday people don’t believe are possible. Reading it, I felt like I was a kid reading A Wrinkle in Time, believing I could have an encounter with magic. It’s weird and quirky; I’m very interested in African-American writers working in avant-garde genres. I just loved it. Every time I run into the author, I tell him, ‘Big Machine, that’s my jam!’ ”
