Sweet Rivers (choral)

SATBB (after the hymn by William Moore & John Adam Granade)

DANIEL GILLIAM

Fictive Music

Sweet Rivers Performance Notes: Sweet Rivers uses solfège through out. The opening 20 measures are meant to mimic shape-note singing and the common practice of singing a hymn once on solfège, before adding words. Alto II may join Tenors from mm. 1-20 to reinforce the melody. The glissandi starting in m. 22 are light and subtle. Only gliss where indicated. For passages with little place for breathing, stagger within section. Individual singers should begin and repeat the final phrase, starting in m. 52, freely staggering entrances and creating a free canon. The phrase should be sung 2-4 times and get softer at each repetition, fading to nothing. The conductor may guide the diminuendo, but shouldn’t end the piece with a cut off. Duration (depending on number of singers) ca. 3 minutes Sweet rivers of redeeming love, Lie just before mine eyes. Had I the pinions of a dove, I’d to those rivers rise; I’d rise superior to my pain, With joy outstrip the wind, And cross bold Jordan’s stormy main, And leave the world behind. John Adam Granade (1803)
