kyrie, with dust and light for mixed SATB chorus, violoncello, and percussion
1) Born in the dark, bearing the dark, a soul by the side of the road Heard in the dark, cry of a heart , voice by the side of the road, Kyrie, shout kyrie. Cry in the dust by the road Kyrie, shout kyrie. Song in the dust by the road. 2) Quiet the shout, clutch closed the throat of the man by the side of the road. Keep back the cry from the darkened heart, voice by the side of the road. Kyrie, shout kyrie. Cry in the dust by the road. Kyrie, shout kyrie. Song in the dust by the road. 3) Call of the light, throw down your cloak. "Come, I am here in the road." Son of the light, cries out: "Take heart. I am here in the dust of the road." Kyrie, sing Kyrie. Show me the dust and the road. Kyrie, sing Kyrie. Show me the dust and the road. 4) Blessed now with sight, bearing the light, full voice giving thanks in the road. Follow the way, eyes opened wide to the sun on the dust and the road. Kyrie, sing Kyrie. Bright song of the dust and the road. Kyrie, sing Kyrie. Bright song of the dust and the road. -David Wright
COMPOSER’S NOTE: David Wright based his poem on a passage from the Gospel of Mark (10:46-52), in which Jesus allegedly restores the sight of a blind beggar named Bartimaeus. My musical setting of the poem music depicts its metamorphosis from “dark” to “light” imagery primarily through textural devices: the entire work could be described as a simple harmonic or textural crescendo from one note (a limited visible spectrum) to many notes, sounding simultaneously (a full, complex visible spectrum). Duration: approximately 7’30”
PERFORMANCE NOTES: General Senza misura passages are indicated with an “X time signature. Timings for these sections are given in seconds:
A circle preceding a crescendo or following a decrescendo indicates dal niente and al niente respectively:
Glissando is notated with a straight line. All glissandi refer to sempre glissandi:
Different lengths of fermata are notated:
Voices Gradual change between two vowels is notated with an arrow:
Freely repeated text is notated with repeat barlines and a solid line. Repeat the text on the given pitch within the indicated duration. Individual singers should not synchronize with other members of the section.
Whistling is notated with diamond-shaped noteheads. Sound is an octave higher than notated.
Violoncello Gradual change between bow position is notated with an arrow: pSP= poco sul ponticello
SP= sul ponticello
mSP= molto sul ponticello
