[thesis : tower to the moon] - 07

thesis tower to the moon the shortest distance at a certain time between the earth and the moon Architecture is beyond the concerns of cost-effective economics, efficient engineering, and legal liability. Architecture’s autonomy as a distinct pursuit is protected by architecture’s inherent absurdity—the tumultuous relationship between need and want that characterizes design. When the absurdity of architecture is ultimately answerable to transcendent truth about human experience, it is valuable to us. But, take away or relativize this truth, and architecture is either consumed by the mechanisms of pure engineering, economics, and liability or it exhausts itself in a self-destructive proliferation of nonsensical proposals and projects. A tower to the moon is here proposed as one possible outcome of such architectural proliferation. The tower to the moon is an incremental accumulation of seemingly infinite architectural projects covering the earth, stacked layer upon layer, that eventually collides with the moon, rendering the project complete. The tower to the moon allows architecture the opportunity to express itself expansively by discretely addressing every human problem and circumstance—past, present, and future, real or imagined—equally until its mission is coincidentally accomplished. The nine tower to the moon projects represented here exhibit the architectural tension between the valuably absurd architecture and the unrecognizable nonsense of the unconstrained proliferation of architecture. recognition: pella thesis prize - top four finalist
